That he wanted me there to meet the guy was a new wrinkle. I texted back. Will give it my best shot It was beginning to look like I would be spending the night at the frat tomorrow. Something I'm sure wouldn't go over well with Karl. I called to let Karl know I was on my way home. When I got there supper was almost ready. "Love of my life......" "Now what?" "Looks like I might have to spend the night at the frat tomorrow night. Kurt has asked me to be there to meet the national rep when he arrives." "I was kind of expecting that after you told me that Kurt wanted the guy to hear about last year." "And then Saturday is the all day." "I know lover and I'm used to it. Now sit down and eat while it's hot." We soon finished supper, got things cleaned up and hit the books until it was time to crash. Friday morning it was the usual routine and then on to classes, which seemed to drag on forever today. Finally done I headed over to the frat as there hadn't been a definative time set for the reps arrival. It looked like every one of the brothers were there and it made for a packed house. Packed, but surprisingly quiet. Everyone was painfully aware of what the outcome might be. Kurt had gone a little overboard and set up a small buffet type reception for the guy. Along about 6 the doorbell rang and Kurt went to answer it. When the door opened I saw a face I hadn't seen in years. It was Doug Ambliss, the man who was most responsible for getting me into gymnastics. He had been Olympics bound until his accident, but I had seen him in exhibition. Dad had gotten the tickets after I had mentioned that I was thinking about it. He also managed to get us a one on one with Doug after the show. Doug took us out onto the floor and hoisted me up onto my first pommel horse. We worked for a solid half hour until I could "scissors" with the best of them. That had been almost 10 years ago and I doubted like hell that he was going to recognize me. Then it dawned on me that he was gay. I certainly hadn't known it at the time, nor that I was. That realization didn't hit for a few years after. Kurt was making the rounds with the guy and they finally got to me. "Mr Ambliss, this is Dennis Sawyer. I want you to particularly hear his story from last year." "Mr Sawyer.........Dennis Sawyer.......why does that sound familiar?" "It was almost ten years ago sir. You set me to my first pommel horse." "I do remember! How did that turn out for you?" "I took the Silver in the all around at the all states this year." "Outstanding! Since the accident I haven't taken much of an interest in the sport." "Understandable. Still, we have an all day practice tomorrow and I'm sure the coach would let you in to watch if you wanted." "So that means there is a meet in the near future?" "A week from tomorrow and it will be here." "I might just take you up on that Mr Sawyer. Could be interesting to see how that simple lesson turned into. A bit later for that story Mr Houser is so eager for me to hear?" "Yes sir. I happen to be in the room next to yours so whenever you are ready as long as it isn't too late." Kurt moved along to some more of the brothers. I grabbed something to eat and then headed upstairs to my room, door closed. It was about 9 when there was a knock at my door. I opened it and Doug was standing there. "Do come in sir." "Thank you Dennis, please leave the door open. Now I have a few questions first. Your being gay, doesn't have anything to do with me being gay does it?" "I actually didn't know until the front door opened this evening. It was a few years after our lesson that I realized I was gay." "I see. So you obviously have done well with gymnastics. How about the rest of your life?" I proceeded to give him the high points including the accident and the fact that I was married. "Well I think I would like to meet the young man who captured your heart. Now what about this story from last year?" I recounted the whole thing about the redneck squad. Kyle and that whole mess was another thing altogether and didn't bear repeating at this time. "So what do you think of the whole situation Dennis?" "I'm going with the pervailing opinion that somebody finally grew a brian and this is just a change of tactics. I was told last year that there is evidence to suggest that it is a difference in brain structure that determines if you are gay or not. There's no convincing, no decision, either you are or you aren't. Given that, even if we were inclined to try and make conversions, what good would it do?" "I've heard of that study and happen to think it valid. Well I'm glad to have heard the story Dennis. I should let you get to sleep if you have an all day tomorrow, and I would very much like to see it if permissable." "We start at ten in the rec center. I'll talk to coach as soon as I get there." "Very good Dennis. Sleep well." Once he was gone I called Karl. "You will never in a million years guess who the national committe rep is." "So tell me already." "Doug Ambliss." "The same Doug Ambliss who got you into gymnastics?" "The same. You could have knocked me over with a feather." "I bet. So he obviously knows you're gay. Did he try and hit on you?" "Nope, matter of fact he insisted on the door being open the whole time he was here interviewing me. By the way, he wants to meet you." "I'm sure he will get the chance at some point lover. Do we have him to the apartment?" "I'm thinking not. Just from the way he wanted the door open anything like that I think will have to be more public." "Yeah I suppose there are images and proprieties to be observed. Maybe after the meet if it doesn't happen sooner." "I'll see you after practice lover. Sleep well I'm going to crash now." "You as well lover and have a safe practice." So I crashed out and morning got there is due course. I went over to Ingram Hall and grabbed breakfast and then just walked a bit until it was time to head over to the rec center. I got changed up and went to find coach. "Coach I have a special request for today." "Spit out Dennis." "Does the name Doug Ambliss mean anything to you?" "Of course it does." "He is on campus and has expressed a desire to see the practice. He is the man respopnsible for really getting my into gymnastics." "I've got no problem Dennis,as long as what happens in practice stays in practice." "I'm sure I can get him to agree to that." There was still a few minutes before practice was due to start, so I went out front to wait for Doug. He showed up just a couple of minutes before 10. "Coach doesn't have a problem with you watching practice as long as what happens in there stays in there." "I understand and not a problem. Coach isn't going to make a big deal of me being here is he?" "He didn't say anything about it and usually not his style.....though..... He might say something just to create the tension. He's thinking about starting the alternates this meet so might want to see how they react to the pressure." "Is your opponent so weak that the coach is confident enough to start the alternates?" "Not so much them being weak as our squad is strong across the board and coach hasn't really decided who the alternates are going to be. He's giving the two freshman team members a shot to see if they stand up." "Every coach should have such problems. Well I suppose we had better get in there before they start without you." We made our way into the apparatus room and from the looks of things more than one of the guys recognized Doug. Coach noticed. "Alright you guys. Some of you have recognized our guest. Mr Ambliss is merely here to watch. Keep your minds on what we're here for. Stretch out and then we'll run it team format." So we stretched out and then it was to the pommel horse. I did my full routine and then moved off to the side. I did check and there was a bit of a smile on Dougs face. I don't know if he was remembering that first time with me on the horse or not. It was on to the vault and I landed my triple fairly solidly, and on through the rest of the pieces. I landed each of my triples and by the time we were ready for our break Doug had a hugh smile plastered across his face. We broke for lunch and Doug was right there. "I'm really impressed Dennis. You've come a hell of a long way since that simple scissors excercise we did 10 years ago. Are you going to carry on after school and pick up where I left off?" "I don't think so. I've got a business that I now own and I can't in all good conscience leave it in the hands of someone else. I plan on finishing my year here and getting my certification and then test for my license and go to work for the company." "And you're just going to give up gymnastics entirely?" "That I haven't decided yet. My husband thinks I should stay in it somehow, even if I only end up judging. He's got another year to go here so at the very least I'll be supporting the team." "Listen to your husband Dennis. I pretty much didn't have a choice. You do. Hell even if you only volunteer at the local gym do something to stay connected." "I'll give it serious consideration." We had gotten to the student union by this time and went in and grabbed a quick meal and then headed back to the rec center. *************************************************************** Made it home from Florida in time noit to disappoint you guys.
