Are you sure that you're up for this?" "I'm feeling fine coach." "Ok, but take it easy out there today, and I'm reserving the right to pull you if I'm not happy with your warm up on Saturday." "Understood." I went and got changed and stretched out. We once again ran it team format. I went and did every one of my routines and landed every one of my triples without any problems. Coach didn't have any notes for me so I went and hit the pool for a few laps and then the whirlpool. Dana was there when I got there. "Everybodies heard what happened over the weekend Dennis. You sure you're okay for the meet?" "Like I told the coach, I'm feeling fine. Did you see something the coach didn't today?" "No you were right on as far as I could see. Just take it easy for the next couple of days." "Nothing strenuous I promise." I went and hit the pool and the whirlpool and made my call to Karl. "How did it go today Den?" "Everything went fine. Coach heard about what happened and was a little concerned. He's reserving the right to pull me if he isn't happy with my warm up on Saturday." "You don't suppose that was the intent all along?" "To see me pulled from the meet? I suppose it is possible, but our whole squad is strong. Having me out would hardly guarantee a win for Kilbride." "I guess not. Well supper's almost ready." We ate and then hit the books and crashed fairly early tonight. Hump day and the whole routine started once again. Nothing out of the ordinary happened today and I was home before Karl and had supper just about ready when he pulled in. We again made an early night of it and before we were really ready for it Thursday was on us. We followed our normal routine, but instead of going over for a workout today I just swam a few laps. I did take the time to make sure I had everything packed that I would need for the meet and still got home ahead of Karl. Friday morning and we were up and out once again. I did make sure to give Karl a kiss before we parted for our classes as I wouldn't see him before bus time. The day wore on and classes were finally over and I beat feet over to get to the bus. Thr trip to Kilbride was uneventful. Things started to go downhill once we got there. We first had to wait for our guides to show up. Then it was another wait while they had to get the room keys and whatnot. The rooms themselves were a bit rundown. I was once again roomed with Dana. "Just me or are they trying to aggrevate us?" "Not just you Den. Things were a lot different the last time we were here." "Then best you have a quiet word with everybody and let them know it's a head game. I'm betting if we don't react it will piss the Kilbride guys off no end." "You're probably right Den. Let me take care of that now." Dana was quickly around to the rest of the guys before we headed over for supper at their cafeteria. When we got over there the place was practically empty. Once we got our food it was pretty obvious why. The meats were burnt, the vegetables were underdone and the milk was surely approaching if not past its use by date. Coach was right there with us and I'm sure he noticed as well. When we got back to the dorm rooms he got us all together, "Don't let it get to you guys. They haven't done anything we can really call them on yet. Just keep your cool no matter what they throw at us." Most of us returned to our rooms to try and settle down for the night. It wasn't going to be easy as there seemed there was a party going on the floor below us. If there rules here were like those at our school, things would quiet down by 11, at least inside of the dorms. Things did quiet down shortly after 11. But not 20 minutes later there was some kind of altercation out in the parking lot which got the dorm empting out and the campus police called over. Naturally our rooms were all on the parking lot side of the building. By the time that was taken care of it was close to 1 am. We all tried to get back to sleep until 5 am when we had to get up and grab our showers before breakfast. As you might have guessed there was damn little hot water to be had. None of us were looking forward to breakfast. Once again the cafeteria was just about empty when we got there. The food was about what I had expected. The scrambled eggs were runny, the toast burnt...you get the idea. I don't know how he managed it but when we got back to our rooms to grab our equipment, coach was there passing out protien bars to everyone. "Listen up guys. These guys are desperate for a win today. Watch your backs. Don't touch a piece of equipment before we have a chance to check it out. If anything feels the least bit off during the warm up bring it to our attention. I see you all still have the locks on your bags. Be sure to use them today. Now let's get this thing won." We made our way over to the venue and waited while coachs Warren and Connors checked every single piece of equipment. Several were loose or setup incorrectly. By the time everything was corrected we had about 20 minutes to warm up. It looked like Kilbride was going to get their full warm up time, but apparently somebody had been paying attention. Those who were officiating the meet limited them to the same 20 minutes that we had taken. We heard about this while we were in the locker room. I noted the announcement but was off in a corner getting my head into the game. While we were waiting a messenger came into the locker room. Coach walked over and handed me the message. "What the hell? Buses not allowed on campus. People are walking in from about a mile away." I showed it to coach Warren. "So I wouldn't expect the crowd to be in the best of moods. Here text him what's going on." "Complete harrassment campaign going on. Pass the word not to let anything that happens get to them. We don't need to be disqualified for causing a scene." "Assholes." "Agreed." It was eventually time for us to take to the floor and by now the vast majority of the bus people had made it to the venue. We were paired up and moved to our starting stations. For me today that was the vault. Home team was up first. The guy made his vault and landed it solidly. When the guy came back to take his seat while I did my vault, I noticed he was sweating profuesly;far more than was warranted for a single vault. With all of the other bullshit that had been going on since we got here, I asked one of the officials to please check the apparatus and my reason for asking. He looked at the guy and then walked the runup area, the springboard and vault platform. He went to the sidelines and got a towel and went back to the platform and wiped it down. All of which didn't go unnoticed by other officials, or the coaches for either team. When given the go ahead, I went and did my first vault and landed it just fine. The other guy went and did his second vault and did a fair job of it. The official was right behind him to check the apparatus again. I was given the go ahead and after checking with coach and getting the negative, did my second vault. It was on the the high bar and the other guy again went first. His routine was well executed but he didn't have a triple. Given what had already happened today I made it a point to chalk up really well. I went through my routine and landed the triple solidly. On to the parrallel bars and after the Kilbride guy did his routine, the official went and dusted the bars with chalk just to be sure that any moisture left behind was taken care of. Again, none of it escaping anyones attention. I went and did my routine and had a little wobble on my landing. It was on to the pommel horse from here. Once gain after the Kilbride guy had done his routine the official checked the apparatus. As usual I was only paying attention to what was going on in front of me. I later found out that all of the officials were giving each and every participant the same attention. The day wore on and when I got to the rings I did look to coach and he nodded no without even consulting the board. I did my routine with only the double dismount. Finally on to the floor excercise and having already shown that I had the triple here I didn't bother looking to coach. I went and did my routine and landed the triple at the end solidly. I was done for the meet now and could look to the scoreboard. It was pretty obvious to me that we had taken the meet. Everybody was done but there wasn't an announcement being made. Both teams were dismissed to the locker rooms. Coach came back to us within a few minutes. "Kilbride is lodging a protest that we intentionally interupted the flow of the meet which threw off their timing. The officails want to know if we want to file a counter protest for harrassment? Seems this isn't the first time what has been done to us has occured." "Hell yes we should lodge the counter protest!" "Jack, we already won the meet. There's no way they can take that away from us unless the protest is upheld. I don't know about any of you, but I only asked the official to intervene at that first station. Every other time they did it on their own. I doubt like hell the officials will uphold the protest. Coach?" "Dennis has hit the nail on the head guys. We could very well counter and likely get Kilbride sactioned from the rest of the year and the all state, which I don't see them making it to this year anyway. If we counter protest it make us look like sore winners and complainers. I'm thinking we let it go and show people we are the better sportsmen." There was a silence while everybody considered.
