My face however wasn't one of them. Far as I was concerned we had been beaten. Dana noticed I wasn't smiling. "Dennis? What gives?" "We were still beaten fair and square. Something that we all should well keep in mind. It can happen. Am I glad we're going in undefeated, at least techincally? Sure. It gives us a hell of a boost. The fact that we had to do it by decision is going to give every dufus in the state the ammo they need to mouth off that we don't deserve to win." "Dennis has a point gentlemen. So, don't listen to those guys. Yes, technically we did get beaten and it does happen. There isn't an undefeated team in the state this year, so there's nothing to get too upset about. Keep your minds on next weekend, and keep your heads into your studies as well. I need you all for the all state. Now head on out." Which for me meant hitting the pool for a bit and then into the whirlpool. Jack was the only one there today. "You think we're going to have to put up with a lot of shit over this Den?" "I think there are enough turkeys out there that the possibility is pretty good that we will. Hell I'm betting that it will start with Olivette this weekend." "This being their first season, I doubt like hell they'll be talking any shit Den." "Yeah maybe. All we can do is wait and see." We both soaked for a few minutes more and then headed for the showers. I gave Karl his call, checked the car, and then headed back to the apartment. "So anything good happen today lover?" "We got word on the review." I gave him the specifics. "Damn that could have gone either way. Surprised they were so hardnosed about it." "Yeah well, I guess they wanted to make a point. Regardless, I reminded the guys that means that they really did beat us though, and that we might well have to put up with some shit at the allstate for it." "And I'm betting they didn't like hearing that?" "Not really, but coach recognized that it was a definate possibility." "He say anything about getting something organized for the guys for that week between the end of school and the all state?" "Not yet. I imagine it is something coach will have to run by the administration anyway. That alone will end up taking time." "Yeah I suppose." We had our supper and simply laid back for the night and crashed out fairly early. Sunday morning and we were up and out with the guys. I gave them the word on the review. "Well damn Den you guys hit the all state undefeated then." "Technically true Cam, but Dresmire did in fact beat us out seeing as the alternates never got to compete." "Yeah, I guess." "So who do you think is going to be talking shit when you finally do get to the all state?" "Hell if I know Aiden. Anybody or everybody, regardless I'm turning a deaf ear and I already suggested the rest of the team do the same thing. I'm betting we get a bit of practice this weekend." "This is these guys first season right?" "As far as I know yeah." "Then I'd think they would have damn little room to talk any kind of shit." "Doesn't mean they won't though Gordon. Their coach may encourage it to try and give them a shot, he may just as likely tell them not to if they want to get a 'good' reputation. Like I keep telling folks, perception is still a part of the game." We got our laps done and Karl and I were back to the apartment. We just kicked back today until it was time to go down for supper with the Castanzas. That time finally rolled around and we were downstairs to get the table set. "You really expecting Olivette to be talking trash next weekend Denny?" "It's a distinct possibility Cam. This being their first season though I'd hope they were better than that." "Any idea what kind of season they're having?" "I honestly haven't looked Paul. If there were outageously good I'm sure we would have heard about it by now." "True enough I suppose." "So the team, overall, looks good Dennis?" "They do Mr Castanza. I'd put them up against anybody and be confident." "If I were a betting man......" "Dominic!" "I said IF my dear." Supper was pretty much a quiet affair after that. So Karl and I were soon enough back upstairs and just laid back until we crashed. Monday morning and it started all over again Laps were run, breakfast had, and showers taken and we were off to class. The first two classes were finally gotten through and I was over to the student union for my lunch. Pete and Susan stopped by today. "So I hear that review found in favor of our team?" "Yeah, so technically we are undefeated this season, though it was one of the alternates who never got to compete. In other words we really were beaten by Dresmire." "But after all of this they sure as hell aren't going to be at the all state are they?" "Nope their season ended with that decision. Hell I'll be surprised if they even field a team next year and if they do I bet they'll be under a damn watchful eye all season." ." "Yeah, well not your problem Den. We've got to get going." "Later." No it wouldn't be my problem. I still hadn't decided just how the hell I was going to stay connected to the sport. I eventually headed over to Risk/Rewards. We had finally covered the whole book. "Ok folks, we went faster than I had planned. So, here's what we're going to do. Classes from here are strictly voluntary. We will have open discussion until the week before finals. We will then have a review and then your final exam as scheduled. Like I said classes will be voluntary, but I can't say that things diiscussed might not end up on the final. Now get going." So, I headed back to the apartment and got things ready for supper. Karl got home not long after. "Anything interesting today love?" "Only that I don't have to go to my last class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until it's time for review and the final." "How the hell did that happen?" "We got everything covered faster than anticipated." "Going to take the extra time to workout?" "I may do more swimming, but I doubt I'll be hitting the apparatus room every day. I'd sure as hell be worn out by the time we got to the all state." "Yeah you'd sure as hell would be. Supper?" "Up in 5." After supper it was a quick review of my portfolios and then I kicked back until it was bedtime. Tuesday we were up and at it again. There wasn't any real discussion while we ran today and Karl and I were soon enough back to the apartment and ready for the day. I went in when it was time and then had my review. "Any changes Mr Sawyer?" "None sir." "Then off with you and good luck this weekend if we don't speak before it." "Thank you sir." So it was over to the student union and my lunch and bench time. Nobody stopped by today and eventually I headed over to the rec center for our final mandatory practice. Everyone threw every triple thay had today and from what I could see we were in damn fine shape. Coach seemed to think so too. "Alright gentlemen great session. Olivette should be here about 7 on Friday. I expect everyone there to meet them. I also expect all of you to be on your best behaviour no matter what they might have to say. They've had a mediocre season with 4 out of 7 wins. With the exception of one, those wins were all against folks we have beaten. That one exception being Aldean Tech, who we will be meeting at the all state. Aldean, for the record, is 6 and 1 this season, so either Olivette had a hell of a good day or Aldean had a really lousy one or a combination of the two. So, just because it looks good for us to take Olivette, don't think that Aldean is going to be a pushover. Now get on out of here." So I hit the pool for a bit and then the whirlpool. Dana was there when I arrived. "Coach likes the idea of organizing something for the guys and he is pretty sure the administration will be getting behind it as well." "Guess I better have some cash on hand when the time comes." "Actually, coach thinks there might be a little left over in the budget as well as a little from the alumni to cover it if the administration approves." "So much the better. I hope the guys appreciate it and have a good time with it." "I'm pretty sure they will Den. Well, I'm outta here." I soaked for a few minutes more before I hit the showers. I gave Karl his call and checked the car and headed for the apartment. "anything special happen today Den?" "Not a damn thing. Coach did tell us that Ollivette has had a pretty mixed season, but just because of that not to take them lightly." "And where does he stand on the all state?" "He still thiks Aldean are going to be the ones to beat. Really strange that their only loss this season was to Olivette though." "Off day?" "Probably, they do happen." We soon had our supper and got a bit of school work done and crashed early. Wednesday and Thursday went much as you would expect, with a light workout after the practicum for me. Friday classes were gotten through and I did stay on campus to wait for the Olivette team to arrive. Just a few minutes before 7 they rolled on in, and in style to boot. Their bus was one of the newest I had seen in a long time.
