"So what the hell are you going to do about it?" "I'm waiting on Stan to email something so I have it to show to Dean Evans. I expect he will be at it for quite sometime tonight." "So I expect you'll be really late tomorrow?" "Only if I can get in to see Dean Evans tomorrow afternoon." "Take a deep breath lover, this too shall work itself out." "I hope to hell so." Karl wrapped his arms around me at that point. "It will Den. With all of the shit you've had to deal with in the last couple of years, this should be a walk in the park to handle." "And I'm thinking that short of Andros, this is going to be the fight of my life. He's an instructor and I'm just a student bitching about him. How do you think Dean Evans is going to see that?" "With everything that has gone on? I'm thinking he's going to be taking you pretty damn seriously. Have you ever gone to him over something that you didn't really need to? The answer is no. I know you Den. Did you ask around about the guy? What did you find?" "Just that he has a reputation for being a hardass and that is like second hand knowledge." "So go get some firsthand knowledge. Hell Andy has been here long enough and as much as I hate to say it, go talk to McEmbers." "Do you really think he'd bad mouth another instructor?" "If the guy is a lousy instructor he might, hell if he is just a lousy human being." "I'll talk to him after class tomorrow if he has the time." "You've got nothing going for supper so let's hit Rons." I followed Karl down to his car and we were on the road. Gladys could see there was something bothering me as soon as we walked in. "Ok, you guys have been here often enough for me to know something is bothering you Dennis." "Nothing you can do anything about Gladys. Strictly a school problem." "One of the instructors being a pain?" "Something like." "Who? I pretty much know them all." "Mr Adams." Though she didn't say anything a scowl passed across her face. "So, from that reaction he is somebody you know?" "Know of, at least by reputation." "Which I have to assume is not the best?" "Let me just say that those business students who come in here don't have anything good to say about him." "Maybe he's already on the Deans radar Den." "Always a possibility I suppose." "So the usual for you guys tonight?" "Sounds fine to me, Den?" "Yeah me too." Gladys was off and we soon had our food. We didn't dally over our supper and were soon on our way back to the apartment. Book work took up the rest of the evening and we crashed. Another hump day and we were up and out for our jogging with the guys. There was no fooling them either, so I had to account for my foul mood. "I've heard some of the guys in my classes complain about him Dennis. I think you have a hell of a fight on your hands." "Pretty much what I was afraid of Gordon. I just hope to hell it is one I can win." "Anything we can do to help Den, you let us know." "Nope not this time. You guys get involved in this and end up having him at some later point and you're screwed. This one is on me." "Bullshit Dennis! Just because we help you doesn't mean we have to show our hands." "I said no Aiden. There aren't any real secrets around here and word would get out eventually. Hell you guys may already be guilty by association. Just let me handle this." We had finished out laps and Karl and I headed back to the apartment. While Karl was showering I checked my email. There was a PDF there from Stan. I didn't even take time to read it just now and just started the printer. The thing chugged away for a good few minutes. Karl came out of the bedroom at that point and I went and jumped in the shower. I was quick about it this morning as I wanted to get onto campus and try and get to Mr McEmbers before class. When I came out, Karl was reading the stuff. "Den, it's amazing that this guy isn't doing time, if I'm reading some of this stuff right." "I'll read it later between classes. I want to get on campus and corner McEmbers." I grabbed a quick something to eat and was out the door. I was shortly on campus, and I knew where Mr McEmbers office was. I checked to see if he was in yet and he wasn't. I parked myself right there and waited. About 20 minutes later he showed up. "What the hell Dennis?" I laid it out for him and I could see from his expression that he wasn't happy about any of it. "And you say you gave him your word of honor and that wasn't good enough for him?" "It was not. I figured anything I got from the company he would figure was coerced." "You're probably right there. So what is it you want from me?" "Advice. Should I go to Dean Evans, take my chances and try talking sense to Mr Adams or what?" "First off, make a full copy of your transaction files and notes. Somebody impartial will have to review them if you lodge any kind of complaint. Do you have anything documenting the past actions?" "My general manager emailed me this package this morning. I haven't had time to really look at it yet." "From the thickness of it we don't have the time now. We both need to get to our first class. I'll cut our class short and we can go over this then. Now get." I headed into Investments and paid as much attention as I could. Then I headed over to the tax class. Mr McEmbers came in and put his breifcase on the table. "Alright folks I have a bit of a surprise for you today. We are pretty much finished with the course so you all have the next hour off." For the rest of the hour, we went over the package that Stan had sent. "How this guy ever escaped serving time is beyond me Dennis. You take this to Dean Evans and there is going to be hell to pay for somebody. I doubt he can sumarily dismiss Adams as he has tenure." "So do I make things better or worse for myself if I go to the Dean?" "You need to get your case in front of him Dennis. There's less than a month to the end of term." "Then I best get my ass over to his offce and get an appointment for later." I headed over and Mrs Humboldt got me an appointment for 5. I still had a bit of time before my last class, so I went over to the library and used one of their printers to print out my practicum notes and portfolio. Risk/Rewards was eventually gotten through and then it was waiting to see Dean Evans. It was going to be an hour so I hung out at the student union instead of haunting the Deans office. Gordon and Aiden came by. "What are you doing here at this time of day Den?" "Waiting to see Dean Evans. Didn't want to seem ... desperate I guess, killing the time at his office." "So how are things looking at this point? I'm sure you've talked to others by now." "I have Aiden, and the one person I talked to thinks Adams should be serving time, but the Dean can't summarily dismiss him because he has tenure. This is going to be a drawn out fight that may well go beyond the end of the term." "And if it does?" "I might well have to wait until next year to take the brokers exam. At the very least I'll probably have to repeat the practicum, if not the whole damn program." "At least you'd get to hang with us for two more years." "Much as I like you guys, I don't think so. That would have Karl hanging around here an extra year for no reason other than to be with me." "That would be enough reason for me. Hell aren't you doing the same thing for him?" "To some extent yeah, but I have that branch office of my company here to work at. Karl wouldn't have that oppurtunity, unless he went to work for somebody else for the year." "If you do have to stay are you going to do the gymnastics?" "That's a hell of a question Gordy. Hell if I have to stay, yeah I probably would, unless I was academically ineligible." By now it was time for me to head over to the Deans office. "Have a seat Mr Sawyer. It's going to be a few minutes. Something unexpected came up." So I sat there waiting. The inner office door opened. "Thanks for taking the time to see me uncle Jack." It was a voice that I well knew. I thought I was having some kind of hallucination, but when the person came out of the officeI could plainly see that it was Gladys from Rons.
