The next morning we went down to the continental breakfast and sat ourselves down with Lukas and Daniel. "We were thinking......there's a couple of hours until check out......" "Tempting as that sounds, I don't think either one of us is up to that this morning." "I'd be damned surprised if you were. You guys just don't know how to be quiet do you?" "We've never had to be that I can think of, then again my memory only goes back, well less than a year at this point." "That's really got to suck." "Yeah it does. I've re-established some friendships...and some rivalries as well. Maybe someday I'll be able to tell which I'm facing when I meet somebody from my past." "From what I've heard around the hospital, if it hasn't come back by this time, your memory might never." "And I researched a few cases when I had nothing but time on my hands, and it has taken as long as several years. I still have hope." "Well we wish you the best of luck Dennis." "Thanks, now I don't know about you guys, but we have about a three hour drive ahead of us and I still have to prepare for classes tomorrow. So we had better get going." Just for the hell of it we exchanged phone numbers. Karl and I got back to the room and packed and I gave the room the once over before we went to the office and turned in our keys. The ride back to the campus was uneventful until we were almost there. Traffic had come to a standstill. I reached out and turned on the radio and found one of the local stations. ".....To recap. State campus is currently on lockdown for a bomb threat. Only the police are allowed either in or out at this time. We have no other details at this time. It is requested that if you have someone on campus that you do not try and contacted them by any wireless means as that might possibly trigger any device on campus. All of those on campus have been asked to stay right where they are. As of yet no claims of responsibility have been made, nor have any demands. We will report to you futher developments and details as they are made available to us. Again..." "Shit I hope everybody is alright." "Hell Den I hope it is all a hoax." "That would make things better, but not a hell of a lot I think. If it is a hoax I'd sure as hell hate to be the one perpurtrating it. They ever catch whoever is responsible they'll lock him up forever and a day. We'd better try and get to the other side of town and call your parents. They must be going off the deep end about now." "What about Pete's mom?" "Unless we run into him we have no way of knowing." I was able to take a side road and get us away from campus just to be on the safe side. Karl called home and let them know we were off campus and had only just found out what was going on, and that we would keep them posted. We happened to be in the vicinity of Rons so we stopped to have supper. When we walked in Pete and Susan were sitting there. "Thank the stars you guys are ok. You have called your mother haven't you Pete?" "Yeah a couple of hours ago. She was frantic." "I can imagine. Any idea if Gordon and Aiden made it off campus?" "Sorry, no idea." "Well let's all just think good thoughts." I don't even remember what we had for our supper, but Gladys took care of us as always. Along about 10pm word came down that the campus was clear and once again open, but only to students and faculty. Karl and I headed back but traffic was still a mess with parents having descended on the campus en masse. We didn't finally get back onto campus until after 11. I simply kissed Karl wherever we were once we were out of the car and he headed across to his dorm and I went up to my room. Pete showed up about 20 minutes later. Aiden and Gordon stopped by before I had the chance to sack out. "Been a hell of a day. Seeing as it is so late, think we can do without the jogging in the morning?" "Yeah Gordon I think we can skip one day and sleep in for a bit, if anybody gets any sleep tonight at all. I'm betting if a car backfires there's going to be a panic." "I wouldn't doubt that in the least. Well see you in the morning for class if not before." Soon enough I was in bed,but it took me a while to fall asleep. I had reset my alarm for 7 and when it went off I reluctantly rolled out of bed, grabbed my stuff and headed for the shower. Then it was down to breakfast where I joined up with Gordon and Aiden. We were soon enough off to our classes and another Monday was underway. It seemed that all anybody could talk about was the bomb threat and it got tired pretty quickly. Classes went by as expected and I headed for the gym for a bit of a workout before heading back to my room. There were several police cars out front of the dorm when I got there and when I went upstairs there were officers waiting at my door. "Mr Dennis Sawyer?" "Yes sir." "Do you own a cell phone number 879 555 9734?" Now that was the number of my original cell phone and alarm bells went off right away. "I do still own that phone, but I haven't been using it for at least a month or so. Why?" "We've traced the bomb threat to your phone and you'll be coming with us for further questioning." "Fine. Pete, call my lawyers and tell them I'm being detained and to get here soonest." "You have lawyers on retainer?" "They oversaw my parents legal needs and yes I've retained them. Where will this questioning take place?" "15th precinct." "We also have a warrant to search your rooms for that phone." "I'll save you the trouble. It should be in the center drawer of the desk." "Jacobs and Benson are hopping the company plane and should be here in an hour Den." "Thanks Pete. Tell Karl what's going on and to keep his cool." "Done." The officers came out of my room with my old phone in an evidence bag and I was cuffed and hauled downstairs. By this time Dean Evans was on the scene. "Just a moment officers. Mr Sawyer have you been read your rights?" "No sir as a matter of fact I haven't." There in front of everyone the officers proceeded to read me my rights. "My lawyers are already on their way Dean Evans." "Very well Mr Sawyer. I would recommend that you keep silent until they arrive." "I had planned to sir." I was driven off campus and to the local precinct and processed and put in a cell. Everyone knew that my lawyers were on their way so I wasn't questioned at all. Along about 6 pm Mr Jacobs an Mr Benson showed up and we were all taken into an interview room. "Mr Sawyer tell us what you know of the bomb threat this last weekend." "I know nothing about it except what has been reported." "And what about your phone?" "That phone has been compromised officer." Mr Jacobs pulled out of his briefcase all of the correspondence I had sent him from when Larry Brown had been tracking me. He also informed the detectives of the pending federal case and the local charges that Mr Brown was facing. "You honestly think he could arrange something of this sort from federal prison?" "From what my friends tell me sir, I wouldn't put it past him. The brake line situation took place after he was in custody after all." "Very well Mr Sawyer. Let us check things out and in the meantime don't leave town." "I'm free to go?" "Yes sir. Pick up your things at the front desk. This officer will escort you." When we got to the lobby Karl and Pete were both there. Once I was released I went to Karl and gave him a hug, and Pete got one too. "Mr Sawyer, you know the routine. Don't say anything without me or Mr Benson present,at least by phone if not in person. And for the love of god try and stay out of trouble." "I'll sure as hell try Mr Jacobs. Thanks for coming up." Once we were out of the precinct and in Karls car he looked at me. "What the hell Den?" "They think I'm responsible for the bomb threat. They backtracked the call to my old cell." "Larry?" "Larry and you thought I was nuts to keep on checking the cars." "Damn it! Is he every going to be out of our lives?" "With our luck? Probably not. I need something to eat and then I'm calling it a day. Too damn much drama for me." "It's been no picnic for the rest of us Den." "Yeah I know Pete. Sorry to get you involved." "Hey, what are roomies for?" We made it to campus and after giving Karl his goodnight kiss, I grabbed a sandwich from the cafeteria and headed for my room. I of course ran into Gordon and Aiden in the hall. "What the hell Den? The police have been in and out of your room all afternoon?" "They think I'm responsible for the bomb threat." "No fucking way!" "True enough but the call was traced to my phone,my OLD phone." "Damn you think that guy is still on your case, even from federal prison?" "He may be." At that point my phone rang. "Dennis, Mr Jacobs. We just learned that Larry Brown has been released on bail. He's been out for several days. You had better be damned sure to watch your back."
