That must have taken his last bit of strength as he released me and slumped back to the bed and all of the alarms on all of the monitors started going off. I backed out of the room to let the oncoming rush of doctors and nurses get into the room. A code blue call went out over the intercom. I didn't leave until I saw them pull the covers up over Larrys head. I suddenly felt hands grab me. "You did this to my boy! I'll see you rot in hell Sawyer!" The police officer who was there pulled Mr Brown off of me. "You want to press charges Mr Sawyer?" "No, it's understandable. Mr Brown, Mrs Brown, I am sorry." "Like hell you are Sawyer! He told us how you've been all over his case making false accusations and harrassing him! You ain't getting away with this shit!" I wanted to put Mr Brown in his place but I just didn't have it in me to do it, not right now at least. I was sure the truth would be found out anyway. I turned to Karl and we walked away from the whole scene. It was a quiet trip back to campus after that. Gordon and Aiden were waiting when Karl and I got back to my room. "Well?" "He threatened me just before he died." "What?!?!?!?" "He told me he wasn't done with me yet. I wonder how many digital time bombs he left ticking, and for that matter where?" "Call your lawyers love. They need to know what's going on so they can protect you. I wouldn't put it past the Browns to try for some kind of wrongful death crap, not after that tirade." "As twisted as Larry got his dad to believe neither would I." I looked at my watch and saw that it was still before 5 and pulled out my cell and called the lawyers and filled them in. Mr Jacobs said I didn't have a thing to worry about but appreciated the heads up. "So now what love? Ready to go get supper?" "I'm not very hungry Karl, but you guys go ahead. I think I just want to be alone for a while." "That ain't happening lover. I'll sit here and be quiet, or hold you until the cows come home, but there's no way in hell I'm leaving you alone." "I appreciate it love but there's no need. You have just as much to get done as I do. So go and take care of things. I'll be fine." "Ok lover have it your way. I don't like it but I guess I'll get over it. I'll see you in the morning." "Good night love." Karl took off,but Pete was still there as were Aiden and Gordon. "Really guys I'm fine." "If you say so Den. We'll see you in the morning too." Aiden and Gordon left at that point and I turned to Pete. "Hey first off I ain't saying a word and secondly I live here and third I've got no place else to go." "I wouldn't dream of asking you to leave Pete and if push came to shove and I really wanted to be alone I could go over to the frat, if I thought I could really be alone over there." "I suppose you could, but you're staying here right?" "Yeah I'm staying here. Now I don't know about you but I've got some studying to do." I opened my book and got to work. A couple of hours later I grabbed something out of the fridge to munch on and kept on reading. Before I knew it my phone buzzed with a text message. It was 11 already. The usual text message came in from Karl and I sent mine back to him and was soon after asleep. Next morning we were out for our jogging and Aiden made his one lap around and wasn't quite so winded today. Classes were gotten through on this hump day and after class I went out to my car to wait for the insurance adjustor. Right on time a car started to work its way through the parking lot looking for my car, I had to assume. Shortly the car pulled up and stopped and a rather good looking man got out. "Mr Sawyer I presume. Alex Caine. Well let's take a look see shall we?" The guy opened up a laptop and started punching stuff into it as he took stock of the damage. He crawled under the car and took a look at things there as well. "Well the frame is bent, the gas tank is dented but not ruptured. Both taillight assemblies, trunk lid, rear deck panel, rear bumper and gravel pan, both rear quarter panels and a few other odds and ends. Give me a few minutes and I'll let you know the results Mr Sawyer." I waited while he worked his information on the computer. While he was doing his figureing, I was doing a bit of research for myself. Given the make year and milage on the car I got the range of prices from a couple of different sources for what the car should be worth. I had a feeling they were going to call the car a total loss and lowball me on the payout. "Well, I'm sorry to say Mr Sawyer that the cost of the repairs exceeds our standards for repairing your car. I'm therefore authorized to pay you $4125. You do have the option to foot the bill for the repairs yourself." "And what do you estimate the repairs to cost?" "By the information I have available to me at this point the repairs are in excess of $3500." "Thank you for your time. I'll have it repaired at my own expense thank you." "As you wish sir. If you'll just let me fill out this waiver and if you will sign it, we'll be done." Was it likely to cost me through the nose? Yeah probably, but it was my mothers car. Granted I still didn't remember her but it was one of the few thing that I had which had been hers. I wasn't about to let it go. Plus by all estimates it would have cost me well over $ 15,000 to replace the car. A little over $4000 just wasn't going to cut it. I signed the waiver and the guy was gone. I used my phone to see if there was a local Mercedes dealer and there was . I called them to come pick the car up and that I needed to have it no later than the day before Thanksgiving. Could I have ridden home with Karl? Sure, but his car was like mine at home, a two seater. We would never have gotten Pete home and I sure as hell wasn't going to leave him here for the holiday. They dispatched their tow truck right away and they were there in less than a half hour. I gave them my contact information and watched as they took the Benz away. Pete and Karl and the others were there by this time. "That is going to coast you lover." "Yeah I know, but I've kinda gotten use to driving it and what they were going to give me for it was less than a quarter of what would cost me to replace it. Having said that, there's no way in hell I'm getting rid of the TR either." "I'd be surprised as hell if you did after all of the time you spent rebuilding it." "I suppose if I remembered that it would make a difference, but it's just fun to drive. Life goes on. What are we doing for supper?" "You know what? I'm in the mood for Tonys. Who is with me?" "Sounds like a plan to me Karl." "Me three if you don't mind." "Guess we'll have to walk over in that case." "Ain't nobody walking anywhere as long as I've got my car." We all piled into Aidens car and were at Tonys in short order. We all had our food and headed back to campus and just ate out in front fo the dorm. After we had finished eating Karl and I went for a walk and got involved in a bit of Frisbee. Later we found a place for our good night kiss and I was back to my room to get a little work done. The usual messages were passed back and forth at 11. Thursday morning rolled around and we woke to cloudy skies. We all got our jogging in and it was off to classes and then a mandatory workout for gymnastics. Friday went much the same way. Saturday morning I was out to do my jogging and Gordon seemed to be a little off. I didn't say anything about it but when we went to take our showers I noticed some suspicous scratches on Gordons hips, scratches that I knew damn well how he had gotten even without asking him. He must have noticed me taking note and his turning red had little to do with the temperature of the water. Hey it wasn't really any of my business so I didn't ask and he didn't tell. The rest of the weekend went by pretty much without incident as did Monday and Tuesday. Wenesday I got an email from Aaron. Seemed Larry's services were going to be held of Friday. He just thought I deserved a heads up. Thursday was uneventful as well. Friday I did get a call that the Benz was ready to be picked up. Karl and I made a trip to the bank on Saturday morning to get the money to pay for the car and we were soon at the dealership. It had cost me a goodly amount, but the car was in pristine condition. We were soon enough back on campus with just the weekend and Monday and Tuesday to get through before we headed home for Thanksgiving. Monday in and of itself was pretty ordinary but Tuesday you could feel it that everybody was antcy to get the day over with. Karl, Pete and I had pretty much decided to wait until Wenesday morning to head home. The campus was pretty well deserted by the time classes were done for the day. We ended up hitting Rons for supper that night and we were all in early so that we could hit the road early as well. It was decided that we might just as well all head home together,so the plans was to bright and early pile into the Benz and make the trip home. Karl and I were up at our usual 5:45,but getting Pete out of bed was difficult to say the best. We finally hit the road at about 6:30. We figured we would be home a little after 1. We ended up dropping Pete of at about 2:30 after we had fought traffic all of the way home. 20 minutes later we pulled into my garage. Mrs Ohanlons car was of course still there. We walked into the house and the air was heavy with the scent of apples, cinnamon and nutmeg. I thought to myself, moms making her apple crisp. In that one moment a life time of memories seemed to flood into my head. The sheer overload must have caused me to stumble or something. The next thing I knew clearly, I was staring up into Karl's and Mrs Ohanlons faces. I could feel the tears running down my face. I looked at Karl. "I remember."
