Keith's Choir College Experience Chapter 2 By Tenor LK If you have ever visited the Choir College, the first thing you notice is that it takes you about 5 minutes to walk from one end of campus to the other...literally. First year students are required to stay on campus, and most of us are housed in Seabrook Hall. Those of us who are lucky enough to not be placed here live in the DIPS. The DIPs are three Dormitories that are connected together by tunnels that run under the buildings. The DIPS sit the farthest back on the property, while Seabrook was right across the drive from the Commons. So it was no big deal that Steve and I broke off from the others when they continued on the path to the DIPS, while we both headed to Seabrook Hall. It was the first time Steve and I were in each others presence without other people around...So I decide to pick his brain a little. "So what's you major?" I quickly blurted out, trying to create conversation. "Music Ed. I'm a little nervous...kids and I don't mesh well." "Well, why Music Ed then? I mean, it's a great major...I'm the same...but you should do something you are proud of" "Well, I originally auditioned for Voice Performance and I didn't make it, so I auditioned again and got in with Music Ed." "That's cool..." and again, we were engulfed in silence. It wasn't a pressured silence...we had made it up into the building and to the second floor, and to my dorm room before we said anything else to each other. "Well, I guess I'll see you around" Steve said, with a smile. "Sure, I'd like that...feel free to walk in, my door is always open" I responded. And with that, I walked into my room while he started back down the hallway to his. My roommate was in at this point, Gerald was probably the most stereotypical black guy you could find...and I don't mean this in a bad way. He was funny and polite...but he was as thin as a stick and he wore his Sean Jean jeans and triple extra large t-shirt. "How was breakfast?" Gerald said, eyes glued to his computer screen. "Very good...but I ran into a girl on my way into the building this morning." "Keith, you didn't!" "Yeah, I did...I was out in left field and didn't see her walking up from the DIPS" "Well, it's not the best way to meet chicks, but to each one his own..." As Gerald continued to talk, I realized something...I hadn't made any real strive to get to know my roommate...he didn't catch on that I was Gay, like everyone I knew in High School...so, with my past being so positive in people receiving my rainbow pride news...I just went for it... "Well Gerald...you won't have to worry about chicks with me...I prefer to chase after guys..." "What did you say?" "I Said I liked guys, I'm gay Gerald...is that ok?" "Um, I'm not sure...I just thought, you know...you seemed cool...and not swishy like a lot of guys on this campus I have noticed running around here." "Not all of us walk around with permanent limp wrists...some of us like the same things as straight men...I still like to go out and play soccer and basketball like everyone else...but I happen to like date guys...look, are you going to be ok with this?" "Isn't it wrong though...I remember reading about it in the bible..." "Gerald, The bible was written by Man...not God..." "Keith, it really is this simple...don't hit on me...I'm not gay." "Not that I would be interested in you, but fine..." We spent the rest of the morning in silence until it was time for section seatings for choir. Choir College firmly believed that all of its students should be placed into a particular voicing pattern, light high voices to heavy low voices. For example...the tenor section would be divided into 2 groups, Tenor 1's and Tenor 2's. Then, from there the lighter voices would be sat on the beginning of the row, and the heavier voices, at the end of the row. This was done for all four sections of the choir. When it was the tenors turn, we all stood up...there were about 15 of us, and Steve and I stood on opposite ends of the row. We all took our turns singing the seating song for the graduate assistant (the first line of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" in a ridiculously high key...to see who actually had the notes). And he called us by last name, "Atkins, Keith Tenor 1, position 1; McFarlane, Steven, Tenor 1, position 2..." I almost fell over. I was destined to sit next to Steve for the remainder of the year in choir...BRILLIANT!!! I didn't care that I was in position 1, the section leader position...nor that I would have to come to special rehearsals...just sitting next to Steven is what counted. After the entire choir was seated, Dr. Jordan walked into the room...as if he knew it would take exactly 40 minutes and 25 seconds to complete the task. He just sauntered up to the podium, shook hands with the GA, and went into his monologue. " Welcome to Choir College, and your Chapel Choir Experience...you are now placed into one of the best freshman choirs in the nation...and you will soon find out why that is not only a true statement, but a fact that has been true for over the last 30 years. I assume all of you have the first piece in your folders...so let's talk about it." And for the next 15 minutes he talked about Composers and musicianship skills that I won't bore you to death with, and he raised his hands and said, "Now sing" And sing we did. I have yet to date never heard a choir on its first rehearsal create such a beautiful blend to support the melody part. It was evident that this choir was destined to do great things. As we completed the first verse, he stopped us. "It's funny...every choir does exactly what you just did on your first sing with this piece. You looked around at your neighbors and became scared...you sound lacked its initial attack sound...did you notice it? Well, now that you are mentally and musically aware...don't let it happen again...now, sing." And, away we went. We continued on in this fashion for an hour before he let us go. On my way out of the rehearsal hall, Steve stopped me. "Congrats on first chair section leader K, awesome talent you have." "Thanks," I said, blushing to the color of a beet. "You are awesome as well." "Will you have dinner with me...I'd really like to get to know you better." "Um...sure...can we stop by my room first? I'd like to drop my book bag off." "Oh, no problem...I should do the same thing." After he spoke, like it was nothing to him, he hugged me, and took my hand...and we walked to Seabrook hall, not caring who saw us, holding hands. I couldn't believe it...I was able to be with a guy who didn't freak out about my being gay...WAIT! Just as I thought that...I immediately thought about him...he didn't know about me and my sexuality...and I didn't make any effort to tell him...nor him tell me that he was gay...I immediately froze up. "K...you don't look so good...are you ok?" he asked, concern growing present in his voice. "Um, Steve...I'm not sure how to say this..." "Keith, its ok...I think I know what you are about to say. Yes, I am gay...no you aren't...so I'll leave you alone now." And with that he ran off ahead of me to the dorm. What was I to do? All of a sudden, Steve thought that I was disgusted by him, which was so not the case. So I did what any other self respecting man would...I chased after him...eager to give him news he would love.
