Spook

Chapter 21
Ghost's Kiss

"THEY didn't file a complaint, and I knew they wouldn't," Spook continued. "I mean, they wouldn't really want everybody to find out about their perversity."

"Yeah," Charlie answered. "But they had planned something worse."

Spook nodded. "I guess George always knew there was something more between us than just friendship."

"And he started researching our backgrounds," Charlie sighed.

"He found out about my family," Spook continued. "About my dad being in the military... About everything..."

"And he figured out that Rosie was just a cover for us," Charlie added.

Spook smiled sadly. "He told my dad. He sent my parents an anonymous letter with photographs of the two of us. We didn't really do anything intimate in public, but I guess the look and smiles we gave each other in those photographs were dead giveaways."

"He told my parents, too, but they didn't believe it because they knew I had Rosie," Charlie said. "And then, he told Rosie."

"She didn't wanna believe it at first," Charlie continued. "But I guess I had broken quite a few dates with her to 'hang out' with you... and the fact that I didn't really wanna get intimate with her in any way... She became very suspicious."

"She started scrutinizing our every move... every smile... every look. And then, when she had convinced herself that there might have been truth to George's claims, she confronted me."

"I denied it at first. I even laughed at her," Charlie continued as he recalled strange memories of a time before his mother was born. "But it only infuriated her."

"She told me to ask the dorm manager to be reassigned to another room. I said that would be impossible since it was already the middle of the semester and all the rooms were already occupied. She told me to do it for the next semester. I told her it was ridiculous. I told her I wasn't gonna change rooms just because she was suspicious of my roommate."

"And then she challenged me. She told me that if it really wasn't true, I should prove it. So I slept with her."

"But that didn't satisfy her, did it?" Spook said sadly.

"No, it didn't," Charlie answered. "She wanted you out of our lives. And I just couldn't let you go... so I refused. And it drove her crazy."

"I knew you were sleeping with her," Spook said. "And I was deeply hurt. Why didn't you tell me it was to protect what we had?"

"You didn't tell me about the heat you were getting from your father," Charlie answered. "But I also knew about it. And it hurt me that you were keeping it from me. It hurt me more when I found out that you were already transferring schools for the next semester and you weren't telling me about it."

"I didn't wanna transfer," Spook said pleadingly. "But my father said he would disown me... and he already made arrangements for me to transfer at a local college back home."

"I wasn't planning to go," continued Spook. "I never wanted to leave you."

"Well, I thought you were leaving me eventually," said Charlie. "You never assured me you weren't."

"I thought you'd be leaving me sooner rather than later," Spook replied. "After all, you were spending a lot of your time with Rosie. I barely saw you anymore. You wouldn't even cuddle anymore. You wouldn't even sleep beside me anymore."

"I had to spend more time with her to get her off our case," said Charlie defensively. "But the more I did it, the more I felt guilty about you. I knew it would hurt you so much if you found out the truth. I didn't wanna hurt you. The last thing I wanted to do was to hurt you..."

Darkness began to consume Spook's eyes. "God... George made a mess of everything!" he said angrily.

"No..." Charlie countered, looking at Spook intently. "We made a mess of everything..."

"We could've just been honest, you know," he continued. "We had too much fear in us. But we could've just said 'to hell with it all!' and be happy together. That was exactly what I thought when Rosie told me that she wanted to elope and that she would make sure that my father, my whole family and all our friends would know about me and you if I didn't go with her.

"I didn't wanna be with her. I wanted to be with you. But she gave me an ultimatum. She wanted me to marry her. I didn't want to... but she was very adamant. It wouldn't have made any difference, though... I would've still left her to be with you... if only you said you loved me, too."

"I was ready to give everything up to be with you, you know," Charlie said as fresh tears began pouring down his cheeks. Then he looked at Spook. "But I wasn't sure if you felt the same way. I didn't know if you were ready to leave everything... to give up everything you have to be with me.

"So when I came into our room that night, I felt like I had no choice. I thought you were gonna leave me anyway. So I started packing my clothes to meet with Rosie... to leave you first."

"I got in just when you were shoving the last of your belongings in your bags," said Spook.

Charlie began to see the scene again. And he felt the excruciating pain in his heart as he saw Carlos' teary face as he packs his things in his bags. Then, the door opened and Jay entered, his face was full of pain and bewilderment.

"What's going on?" Jay said. "Where are you going?"

"I'm leaving," Carlos said without looking at Jay. "They told Rosie."

"Who told Rosie what? asked Jay.

"George. The Group," replied Carlos. "They told Rosie about us," he sighed as he tried to hold back the tears. "Now she wants me to elope with her or she would tell everyone."

"What?" Jay said. "You can't... I mean, uh... wh-why would you do that? I.. I thought we were..."

"You thought we were what?" Carlos snapped. Then, his face softened when he saw Jay's pained expression. He shook his head gently as he turned his gaze away from Jay. "I can't do this anymore," he said sadly.

Jay just looked at Carlos as tears began to fall from his eyes. "D-do what?" said Jay.

"Pretend we're just friends," replied Carlos.

"B-but... we're... uh..." Jay stuttered.

Carlos sighed. "I'm in love with you, Jay. I've been in love with you since the day you saved my life. And it just keeps on growing every single day. And I can't stand it anymore. I can't be in the same room with you and pretend that we're just best friends when I know in my heart that I wanna be with you."

Charlie gasped as he recognized the words that Carlos had said... almost the very same words he said to Danny. He continued to watch the scene unfolding before him.

Jay stayed silent as Carlos' tears continued to pour.

"D-do you love me?" Carlos asked.

"Huh? I uh..." Spook was struggling with himself.

"Please tell me you love me," Carlos pleaded.

But Spook stayed silent, just looking at Carlos with sorrow.

Carlos breathed deeply and sucked up the tears. His face hardened as he said, "Don't come after me. Don't look for me. Forget that I ever existed. Because that's what I'll do. From now on, you don't exist to me anymore."

Carlos started to walk past Jay and to the door. Charlie gasped as he felt Carlos passing through him and he found himself crying his eyes out, feeling the pain that Carlos felt that time.

"I'm so sorry," he heard Spook say. "I should've told you how I felt about you."

"If only you said you loved me, I never would've left," Charlie said as he tried to choke up his tears.

"I was a wreck after you had left," said Spook after a while. "All I did was cry my eyes out in this room. I didn't eat; I didn't sleep. All I could think about was you... all the fond memories of us together... the times we made love... the first time we kissed. I couldn't stop thinking about your smile... and I couldn't stop thinking about the way you looked at me when you said you loved me and I couldn't tell you how I felt about you.

"I replayed all those scenes in my mind over and over and over... until they were all I have... they were the only truths that I knew.

"You're right... we've made a mess of everything," Spook continued. "Because of fear. Mostly, my fear. I was afraid of losing everything that I held dear in my life. And because of that, I had lost the most important thing in my life. I had lost you."

They fell silent for a while. Then Spook broke the silence.

"I didn't know how long it was before I finally reached the end of my rope. Johnny tried to cheer me up. He came here every single day to bring me food and to keep me company... to console me... but I was inconsolable.

"Then, one day, I heard two guys outside the door talking about the news that Rosie was already pregnant... and it destroyed whatever hope was left in me. I told Johnny that I was going home that day. He said it might do me good to be with family. But I didn't go home.

"That night, I wept my eyes out as I looked at your photograph... And I knew I couldn't live anymore. So I got in your empty closet and slashed my wrist. As my blood poured from my wrist, I put some in my fingers and wrote a message on the wall for you... A message that I knew only you would be able to read. And you have."

"When I woke up, I saw you sleeping in your bed... and I did what I thought I should do... I began making love to you. After that, I began to see you everywhere. And all I see was you. I made love to you all the time in your sleep. But you never saw me... and you never talked to me. Years passed and I was still trying to make you notice me even though I had long forgotten why I was doing it in the first place. But you never did... until a few months ago, when I found the real you. And everything made perfect sense. Everything began to get clearer. And I began to remember why I was doing what I was doing for so long."

"It was all about you," Spook continued. "I have always been looking for you because I wanted to tell you now what I couldn't tell you then...

"I love you so much," Spook said as he looked into Charlie's eyes. "I need to be with you. You're the only thing that makes sense to me in this world. You are the only thing that keeps me here."

Charlie shook his head, finally regaining control from Carlos' memories. Then he looked at Spook and said, "That was a lifetime ago, Jay. I'm living a different life now. And I have Danny."

"You don't love him," Spook said angrily as dark flames began to consume his eyes again. "What you have with him would never match what we had together."

"That's the thing, Jay," Charlie replied. "I do love him. And he gives me more love than you could ever imagine. He gave me what you couldn't give me... he gave me hope and assurance that this could work out... that we could be together forever."

"But I could give you that now, too," Spook countered as he rushed towards Charlie. "I could give you forever... we could be together in eternity. All I ask is that you give me one more chance."

Spook cupped Charlie's face and looked into his eyes. "All I need is one kiss and I will make everything right for us again... I promise..." he said. "Just one kiss from you and I will take you wherever you wanna go... and then we could be together..."

"Jay..." Charlie began to speak but he felt Spook's soft, cold lips pressed against his lips.

Charlie began to feel weak... his knees buckled and he felt as if life was literally being sucked out of him. He tried to stop Spook from kissing him, but he had no strength left in him.

He started to feel like he was being lifted up and rocked in a peaceful sleep. But as he began to lose all conscious thought, he thought of Danny... his beautiful smile... his soft laugh... and his sweet kisses.

As his last breath was being sucked out of him, he whispered, "I love you, Danny..."
