This is my first time to post on Nifty, although I have written stories back when I was in high school. Trust me that's been a few years. Okay I'm only 26, but still.... I just haven't had much motivation to write until now. Thanks to Oliver, author of "American in Canada" in the college section for the inspiration. I'm not sure how long this will be. We'll just see how it goes. I don't plan on putting much sex in here so if that's what you're hoping for you probably won't like this story too much. Yep I'm a sap for love stories. Let me know what you think Evan D panprince83@gmail.com The Richest Things in Life Chapter 1 Alex Tigard came from a well renowned family in southern California. His father Sam, was the senior partner of a major law firm and kept more criminals out of jail than Johnnie Cochran himself. His mother Ginger, was the heiress of a statewide banking institution that was among the wealthiest in the country. The family home if you can call it that sat in the mountains north of Malibu hidden from plain view. The compound was so large that if you walked around it three times you'd have walked a mile. He was the youngest of three kids. His brother Mark was a Harvard graduate and was a partner in his fathers firm. At 35, he had already divorced three times and had six kids between five different women. At least he could afford child support. His sister Courtney was just starting up her practice as a dermatologist and was already getting celebrity clientele based on her father's notoriety. To top it all off one of Alex's ancestors helped found a town southwest of Portland, Oregon that was later named after him. Many would say this family had it made and was living the American dream. Alex didn't think so. He absolutely hated it. His biggest goal was to come from underneath his father's shadow and become something more meaningful than just a rich snob. He almost considered his good looks a curse. He stood about 5' 11" and was roughly 190 pounds. His skin was golden brown and he kept his jet black hair spiked about two inches from his head. His eyes were sky blue which were quite a contrast to his much darker hair. His body was naturally defined and he seldom had to work to keep it in shape. In high school nearly every girl swooned over him nearly getting into cat fights daily for his attention. After he graduated he could have easily landed the perfect trophy wife to show off at his family's many social gatherings. But that wasn't what Alex had in mind. After two years of college at Stanford Alex gave up on the idea of following his family's dreams and expectations of him and dropped out. During those two years Alex had made an important discovery about himself. He realized why he never cared about the girls' attention in school. He was never attracted to women at all. Sure the signs of him being gay were present growing up but he would push away any thoughts or feelings about other guys due to his family's conservative views and it would be devastating for their reputation if it were to ever be known that he was attracted to other men. But this was the point where he wasn't caring what his family thought anymore. He used the trust funds his grandparents left him to purchase a beach house in Malibu and donated quite a bit of the money to charity. He would even be seen walking the halls of hospitals visiting sick children and on the streets feeding the homeless. Alex had a deep caring for people and believed in doing what was right. At 23 he had been running a non profit organization for helping needy families in Southern California and donated thousands of dollars a year to cancer patients and their families. Sam never objected to this because it gave his family a feel good look. This wasn't Alex's objective at all and made this known to everyone he worked with. At this point Alex had slept with several guys and had a few casual dating relationships. He never kept these relationships a secret while in public except to his family. Surprisingly he wasn't being followed by Paparazzi so all of this went unnoticed. But things would soon change. One day in late August, Alex woke up from tanning on one of the public beaches he frequently visited when he looked up to the most angelic face he had ever seen. The guy looked to be about 22 with auburn brown locks combed back past his ears. His skin was bronzed slightly and his his eyes were a deep jade. His body was smooth and hairless and seemed to glow in the sun. "Oh I'm sorry to wake you ," he said. "You just look familiar to me. Oh wait! You're Alexander Tigard aren't you?" "Yes that would be me," Alex said blushing slightly. He never liked recognition unlike the rest of the Tigard clan. The boy smiled which caused Alex to melt like putty. "It's great to actually meet you. I've always wanted to thank you for helping save my mother's life. If you hadn't donated fifty grand for her chemotherapy and radiation she would have never survived. I could hardly afford the roof over our heads let alone her medical treatments. I'm Garrett, Garrett Wheeler." He reached out his hand and as Alex took it it was like slow motion. His skin was soft but he had a firm grip and Alex could tell he was sincere. "It's nice to meet you Garrett. It's quite humbling to actually be face to face with someone I've been able to help." Garrett smiled again causing Alex to get weak in the knees. Why was he feeling this way? No one had been able to do this to him before. There was something to this kid. "Well I must admit, that if it wasn't for what you did I would totally despise your family." Alex was taken aback but yet not surprised, his first thought was 'What did dad or Mark do to harm them?' "I'm sorry to hear that, as you may have been able to tell I try to distance myself from the Tigard legacy." "Yeah it's almost like you're not one of them." "So may I ask what the other wonderful members of my family did to you to cause you so much disdain?" Alex asked trying to lighten the mood a bit. "Well I'm sure you're aware of your father's excellent defending ability." Alex nodded. "Two years ago he defended a man named Nicholas Simms..." Alex nodded again vaguely remembering the case, then it dawned on him. "You mean the guy that was accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his business partner then raping him and leaving him hanging from a flag pole?" Alex shuddered at his recollection. Garrett nodded with tears in eyes. "Yes, his business partner was my father, Jason Wheeler." Alex had the sudden urge to hug Garrett, but thought maybe it wasn't his place to do so. "Not only did your father get his charges dropped, but he attacked my fathers character and disgraced my entirely family's existence." Alex remembered how wrong he thought that was when it happened. It was blatantly obvious that Simms was guilty, but somehow his father convinced the judge to drop the case. It was after that case that he had really started to despise what his family stood for and started his service work. "I know I can by no way apologize for my father's actions but wow I'm glad you realize I'm not like him. I am glad I was able to help your family's pain even if it was just a little." "More than that Alex. My mother absolutely adores you and would be so jealous that I got to meet you." "Well, don't let her be. I would love to meet her, and Garrett, not only do I remember that case, that case was also the reason I turned to helping the less fortunate. Just seeing the innocent suffer like your family has is just devastating. There's got to be more I can do about this." Garrett looked at him almost shocked. "You mean you would do that? Go against your father like that?" "In a heartbeat, though I haven't quite figured it out though just yet. So let's go see your mom. How did you get here?" "That scooter over there I rode out here from Oxnard." "You came that far on a scooter as windy as it is?" Garrett nodded with a sheepish grin. "Well lets throw it in the back of my MDX." "Alex you really don't have to do this you know, just cause you feel sorry for something your father did." Alex didn't hesitate in replying. "Garrett you're wrong. I do feel sorry for what he did. However, I don't think our paths crossing today was by chance. I'm doing this because I feel it's the right thing to do." Garrett smiled again almost causing Alex to stumble this time. "Well let's get going then." With that they threw the scooter in the back of the SUV and drove off heading west to Oxnard. Hope you liked.
