Heliodoro donned his clerical attire, and gazed at the youth sprawled across his bed. Mornings like these made him reminisce these ten years far from home. Rafael was like a blank slate, left unable to recall any memories. Ten years have passed since he met that small boy begging for money, it seemed his desire to protect and care for him grew with each passing day. He walked over to the bed and gently tucked the blanket around the limp form. With a gentle smile, he kissed the soft cheek and brewed coffee before attending to his appointments. He had two confessions, and the patrons insisted on meeting immediately. Sipping his coffee and gathering his texts, Heliodoro left the room in a brisk pace. He entered the confession booth just in time for his first patron to arrive. Heliodoro was shocked to see Carlos, who owned a bakery not far from the cathedral. He was a man in his mid-twenties. A looker with his trimmed black beard and light brown eyes. His arms were built from lifting flour and were dusted with black hair, he had a guilty look as he approached. Carlos clasped his hands "Hello Father Villavicencio." "Hello Carlos, what brings you here today?" "Bless me father for I have sinned, it has been two months since my last confession. I have had feelings for someone father." "There is nothing wrong with falling in love Carlos." Heliodoro heard a sigh. "That is why I have sinned father." Carlos said nervously. "Can you explain Carlos?" "The other day a young man came into the shop, I fell in love instantly father. He looked foreign, his eyes were blue and hazel and he had an angelic smile. I have lust for him father." Heliodoro felt a strange feeling in his chest. "Carlos, you should know that our scripture does not permit such action." "You're from Portugal right father?" "Yes." "I heard that in your country that they have gay marriage, yet the people are Catholic." Carlos argued "Father, I want your personal opinion." "It is true that I was raised in a liberal society, where religion did not play a role as much as egalitarianism. I must admit that I believe that people should be free to love one another. " Helidoro had that strange feeling in his heart again. "Thank you father." Carlos then said the act of contrition and departed with his head held high. The next confessional went in a similar fashion, almost the same exact discussion. Heliodoro was oddly exhausted and slumped against the wall. He had a gnawed feeling at his heart with every mention of Rafael. Was it Jealousy? Or perhaps his heart had already claimed Rafael? He gave a look at his scripture and knew to a degree that Carlos spoke true. Portugal, Spain, even France known for their Catholic societies are legalizing things that the old men wag their fingers at. A sound alerted him several moments later, familiar foot falls entered the booth and Heliodoro leaned down further. It seemed Rafael did not know he was in there. Rafael spoke softly almost in a whisper "Bless me Father who art in heaven, I wish to speak to you again. I do not have the courage to tell the fathe rmy feelings for him. I ask of you Lord to please grant me the strength to tell him how much I love him. I also ask for you to help the father, he is light in this dark life I live. I know that it is wrong to fall in love with a man almost twice your age, even more so your priest. I ask of you to please let my love go unpunished. I love him so much Lord and I am faithful. Amen." Heliodoro's heart beat rapidly, his face blushing at the angel's plea. His erection grew and he looked down at his bulging robes in shock. These feelings were foreign yet his heart welcomed them with open arms; silence fell in the adjascent booth. With absolute silence, he scampered out of the booth and proceeded to go to his next appointment. _____________________________ Rafael clasped his hands and heaved a sigh of relief, he had finally been able to muster enough courage to eventually tell the father his feelings. He had fear that when he tells him that his heart would be broken, he had prayed countless times and confided in the Lord of his intention. The father would not be back for several hours and Rafael felt excited yet fearful to confess his love. There was no one inside the cathedral, and Rafael heard his footsteps bounce off the walls. Light entered through the stained glass windows on either side, creating a veil of color. Rafael decided to explore the town and hopefully make it back in time for the father's return. The plaza was filled with people, women on their lunch breaks, and men having coffee in close knit circles. The fresh smell of baked bread wafted into Rafael's nostrils. He entered the bakery and a beaming Mr.Domingo greeted him, his arms and face covered with flour. Churros sat on a napkin and various pastries lined glass displays. Mr. Domingo's eyes seemed to follow Rafael about the room. Rafael grabbed a basket and filled it with the father's favorite pastries, it was cheap in price so the money he managed to scramble would do. He approached the counter and gazed at the churros. "I just made them if you would like some." Mr.Domingo smiled. "I do not have enough sir." Rafael replied sheepishly. "That's fine you can have them." Mr.Domingo placed the churros with the pastries."Along with the pastries." "No sir, I have to give you something." Rafael saw a glint in the brown eyes. "How about a name?" "Rafael sir." He felt strangely nervous. Mr.Domingo smiled bigger "Like the archangel, a name as beautiful as your face." Rafael felt a hand on his cheek. Rafael felt the hand run down his cheek "Thank you for the pastries sir." He said quickly and began to back off. "You're very welcome." Mr. Domingo winked. Rafael smiled shyly and quickly departed, he sat upon a bench and began eating the churros. They were warm with a sweetness from powder sugar and a kick from the cinnamon. A hand tapped his shoulder and he looked up to see Luis standing over him. A smile played on Luis' lips and the pearly white teeth shimmered in the light. "You're not going to eat all those desserts by yourself are you?" "No, Mr. Navarro. I bought these for the- uhm someone else." Rafael stopped himself. "Are you doing alright?" Luis sat. "Yes sir." "Try to have fun before he comes home." Luis said sadly "Yes sir." "I have to go now but I hope you have a nice evening." Luis gently kissed the soft cheek. "Thank you Mr. Navarro." Luis stood and waved farewell and walked in the direction of the slums. Rafael checked his watch and saw that an hour had passed. He quickly returned to the cathedral just in time for the father to arrive. The father strangely had a nervousness to him. The father inhaled and looked at the bag of pastries in Rafael's hand. "What do you have there Rafael?" "Oh uhm I bought you pastries father." Rafael held out the bag. "You're too kind to me." The father took the bag and embraced Rafael lovingly. "Uhm father?" Rafael decided now was the time. "What is it Rafael?" "I have a confession." He replied. The father took a moment to respond "Meet me in the confession booth. I will be there shortly." Rafael did as he was told and awaited the father in the confides of the booth. For some reason he always felt uncomfortable in tight places and a nervousness would come to him. He heard the father enter the adjascent booth and Rafael was too shy to look directly at him. Rafael stood his chin down and clasped his hands "Bless me father for-" "You don't have to do that Rafael, just tell me." 'Father... I spent much of my life with you. Almost 11 years now that I have seen your smile... Father I have had feelings for you since I was 14. I love you very much father..." "Rafael you know that it is sin to love another man." The father's tone was calm. He felt his heart crack and he felt his body slump "Yes father." There was no response only silence, but suddenly Rafael saw the curtain being drawn back. The father's face had a gentle smile and he held out his hand. Rafael accepted it tearfully, his body shook with fear, his heart cracking down the middle. The father wiped his tear with his hand and worry came to his handsome face. "Why are you crying Rafael?" "My heart hurts father." "Why?" "I spent so much time trying to get the courage to tell you. But, I guess it was not worth it." The father's face still had a grin "You did not let me finish, I wanted to talk with you directly." The father leaned down "Rafael, I have had my suspicions that you had feelings for me. How you blushed and even remember my favorite pastries and sermons. You have tempted me on numerous occasions. Now, I can say that I will gladly indulge in sin if it means caring and protecting you." The father kissed him then, his breath tasted of pastries with a slight hint of coffee. Rafael felt his face being held and they changed to an open mouth kiss. It was a sloppy first kiss, yet Rafael felt weak in the knees as he tasted the father's lips. It was far more nostalgic than what he had expected it to be. He would read the Song of Solomon and fantasize for this very moment. Where his lips collided in sheer passion with the man he loved without judgement. The father took his breath away as they parted, they panted in short breaths with the realization of what was sinking in. Rafael was lifted off his feet and carried up the stairs to the father's room. As the door closed behind them, the father's lips claimed his again. This time a tongue intertwined with his, a tango with the father leading the way. They broke again and looked into each other's eyes. The father's arms wrapped tighted around his smaller form. "I cannot believe I would be doing this today." "I'm sorry Heliodoro." Rafael replied. "Do not be, I am glad I have done this for you." Heliodoro replied. The phone rang suddenly and Heliodoro dropped Rafael gently on a recliner. Rafael watched him sigh and quickly answer the phone. Heliodoro's face became dark and upon placing the phone in the receiver turned to Rafael. "I'm sorry for being so busy but I have to go do a blessing. Would you like to come?" "Yes." __________ They arrived at a modest home, it was not far from the memorial Rafael had stumbled across earlier. A woman was waiting outside biting her nails. She saw Heliodoro and Rafael approach and quickly scrambled to meet them, she nearly tripped on the way down the steps. Her face was familiar and Rafael recongnized her as the memorial's caretaker. "Thank you for coming Father, and it is good to see you Rafael." The woman smiled. Heliodoro gave a confused expression "You know each other?" The woman smiled broadly "Rafael was kind enough to pray with me at the memorial father." "How is Mrs. Duarte?" Heliodoro asked. "She is ill but it will be good for her to see both of you. Come on inside." The house seemed so familiar as Rafael and Heliodoro followed the woman. The woman led them to a bedroom and walked off to give them privacy. An old woman laid in bed, cheeks hollowed and her gray hair pulled back into a loose bun. Her brown eyes stared blankly at the celling, her lips were tightened in a bitter grimace. As Heliodoro approached she turned in his direction and her eyes glittered. She pulled herself up with much effort and clasped her hands to her mouth. Her eyes were wide as if in absolute horror. Her finger shakingly pointed at Rafael and he felt his head throb. She placed her hands over her mouth and began to sob. "Oh my god, it's you! It's me abuelita!" Mrs. Duarte's eyes were like rivers. Rafael felt a sharp pain pierce his head, he grasped at his temples to make it stop. The room began to swirl and blur as he struggled to maintain balance. He leaned against the doorway and saw Heliodoro watching him with shock. Heliodoro's mouth open in a yell, yet Rafael heard no sound. His knees gave and he fell onto the floor, he felt strong hands hold his head. He struggled to keep his eyes open, Heliodoro was shouting at him with worry. The room dissapeared as his eyelids shut. _________________ End of Chapter 4 I am sorry for taking so long, I been having sex with my chiropractor. Just kidding.
