I never really did like beer that much, but I couldn't drink anything stronger considering I would get carried away. Jared told me that whatever I wanted to do I could. But what I couldn't do was bring it to his house. I told him that I actually wanted to slow down and stop some things. He was quite happy with that answer. It's Tuesday night and I am so bored. Maybe I could go to Jared's house and hang out with him for a little while, but then again maybe I shouldn't. Since we had gotten back together last week we had mended many fences. I told him about the bathroom situation at school and about how it completely restarted everything. I also told him about everything that happened with Mark. He was devastated to put it simply. It felt like I had to tell him everything that happened in the past month. He told me that everything was okay now and that he forgave me for everything that's happened. Being forgiven for breaking up with him and the things with Mark was the biggest relief. "Want a hit?" someone asked me. "Um, no, but thank you." I replied uneasily. The guy looked at me weirdly then walked away. He walked to a group of guys who then gave me the same weird look the one had given me. I shrugged it off and walked to a different part of the house. The people in the house were different than usual. Usually, they'd be drunk and strung out by now, but everyone seemed normal. This struck me as odd considering I was feeling effects from just one beer. When everyone started to stare at me I decided to just leave the house, as if I needed anymore problems in my life. I decided I should head home. And by home I mean the small spot in the deepest part of the park. When Jared had asked me where I was staying I lied to him and said that I was staying with a friend. He immediately began questioning who the friend was, but I reassured him that this friend was straight and he's had the same girlfriend for the past three years. Of course I felt bad for lying to him, but it's not like I'm going to tell him I've been living in the park for the past couple weeks. The night was cool and clear. I love nights like these and it always put me in a good mood. However, right now I'm not in the best of moods. That's when I decided I should call Jared; he actually paid for my late bill. This touched me deeply and I promised him I would repay him in time. "Hey," I said. "Kevin, what's up?" Jared responded. "Not much, I just wanted to hear your voice right now." "Aww, you are so adorable. I was thinking the same thing, but I'm actually kind of busy right now." "You're busy at eleven-thirty at night?" "Um, yeah, I'm trying to understand my math homework." "Ah, well, I won't keep you then." "Thanks, I love you." "I...love you, too." I still haven't gotten used to saying I love you yet. Sure, I'd say it daily before we broke up, but that was before I betrayed him on one of the deepest levels. When I got about halfway to the park a car pulled up next to me and stopped. I could only imagine who it was. Our town's curfew for minors is eleven. I can only imagine how conspicuous I must look. "Kevin," I stopped, but didn't turn around. "Yeah?" "It's Lieutenant Scavo, uh, first name is Rick. Mind if we have a chat?" he asked. I turned around and looked at him oddly. "Um, I guess so." "Don't worry, you're not in trouble. I just want to chat." Rick said nicely. "Go ahead and hop in." I got in the cruiser and buckled up. I've never ridden in a cop car so this was actually kind of cool. But I am so tired that this talk doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore. He drove us to a small diner across town. We went inside; he ordered a coffee and said I could get whatever I wanted. Since I haven't eaten in about two days I was starving. I ordered the largest burger with an extra side of fries and a milkshake. "Sorry," I said shyly. "I'll pay you back as soon as I get some money." "Don't worry about it." he said happily. The wait for my food was extremely quiet. I'm not sure if he was waiting for a certain moment or what, but I was beginning to get very uncomfortable. Finally, my food was brought out and I started eating before the waitress even set the plates down. "Wow, you sure can eat." "Yeah, I haven't really eaten in a while." I said with a mouth full of food. "So, your parents put you up for adoption?" Rick started. I took another bite of food and said, "Yeah." "What're your parents' names?" "John and Nancy Ismay," I said. "Why? Do you know them?" "Your mother," he said disdainfully. "She wasn't ever much of a good person." "How long have you known her?" "Eighteen years," "Wow, you knew her a year before I was born." My burger was gone and now I was just finishing up my fries. "Nine months actually," "But who's counting?" I said comically. "You full?" "No, not really." "Then go ahead and order something else. I really don't mind and it looks like you need something good to eat." "Are you sure?" He nodded. "Okay then, thanks a lot." I ordered a chicken strip combo with another extra side of fries along with another milkshake. "Do they treat you all right?" "They used to treat me okay, but that all changed when I told them I was gay. That's when they started to..." I trailed off remembering that I am talking to a cop. "Started to what?" "Uh, discipline me." "I see," he said. "Isn't it weird how we have the same last name?" I was finishing my last bit of my milkshake when my other food came. I nodded my head and started eating again. "Yeah, it is kind of weird." "You have my eyes," I suddenly stopped eating my food. I looked up at him from my food and gave him a blank expression. Am I hearing this right? Is he actually implying that...he's my father? "Excuse me?" "I'm your dad, Kevin." he said calmly. I looked like a deer caught in headlights. This can't be right. Food suddenly sounded like a disaster. My stomach got extremely full and felt as if I was going to throw it all up. What do I say? I mean, how do I even know this isn't some kind of sick joke? "But...that can't be right. My dad is at his house..." "Your mom and I had a thing a long time ago before I even became a cop. We had a one night stand and that was the beginning of you. I didn't leave her; instead I stayed with her until your birth. I had planned on marrying her if it wasn't for that son of a bitch John. He came into the picture and fucked, sorry, messed us all up. She left me for him and fought for custody of you. She won, obviously, by claiming I was an unfit dad and that I was no where near suitable enough to raise a child. The judge ruled in favor of her probably only because she's the mom and that John had used his money most likely." Rick explained to me. This was still too much to digest right now. After just regaining a little bit of stability in my life this gets throw in. "I, uh, have to go. Thanks for the dinner." "Kevin," Rick said quickly, "wait!" But it was too late. I ran out of the diner and down the street. The park was only about a couple miles from where I was so it shouldn't take that long assuming I don't stop running. Suddenly, I heard a siren. I slowed down to look behind me and I saw red and blue lights coming from the distance. I jumped off the sidewalk and into the park then dashed in the woods. Still, I was only about half a mile away. My legs were aching and I couldn't breathe, but if I stop now he could easily find me. Twenty minutes later I figured he'd stop looking for me. I also figured something else out; I'm lost. Perfect, just what I need. The ground seemed like it was calling for me to just collapse and never get up. I had to sit for a little while. What Rick told me was going through my head and hadn't stopped since I left the diner. Was he seriously my dad? This couldn't be possible. I've lived with John since...well, forever. Sure, he never treated me that well just like my mom, but it would have never occurred to me that he's not my real dad. Whatever. I can't think about this shit right now. I need some sleep, maybe that'll clear my head at least for the time being. The area of the park seemed very unfamiliar to me, but who cares. I laid down on the ground trying to get comfortable. Once an hour had past of me just lying there and thinking about everything from Jared and mines relationship to the fact that Rick is apparently my dad, I figured I wasn't getting to sleep anytime soon. That party house seemed like a great idea all of a sudden. Maybe getting wasted will clear my head better than sleep would. But instead of going to the new spot I decided to go back to the Miller place. By the time I got to the house the place was already wild. Perfect. I immediately walked in and found bottles of the hardest liquor I could find. Five minutes into being there I downed half a bottle of Green Apple Schnapps. That shit burnt on the way down. Tonight I intended to drown my problems out, and that is exactly what I did. One thing I noticed while I was relieving my stress was that that one guy who offered me a hit earlier tonight was here this time with the same friends who were again staring at me. One of the guys actually walked over to me and started talking. We talked for about thirty minutes before he went back to his friends. Our talk was normal; there wasn't any anger or awkwardness at all. It was actually quite nice. My cell phone suddenly vibrated. I looked at who was calling and it was Jared. I really didn't feel like talking right now. If I did talk to him I'd start crying and that is the one thing I'm trying really hard not to do. A few hours later I decided that I didn't want anymore alcohol and began to leave. Going through the house to the front door I realized that this isn't where I belong. I belong with Jared, in his arms. I shook my head trying to clear my thoughts. That is something I'll think about tomorrow. As I was walking out someone forcefully grabbed me and pulled me behind the house. Elsewhere... Jared was sitting in his room going through one of my smaller boxes that he had picked up from where I used to live. The only thing that was really in this box was pictures that we took together before we first broke up. There were some of us holding hands, and kissing, and even laying down with each other. Most of them were taken by his parents, but some were by us. He continued to dig through the contents, but suddenly stopped due to one single picture. It was a picture that we had taken together at the beach one afternoon. His parents took us there for a weekend getaway. It was our most romantic night out I think. There may have not been any sexual acts, considering we just started doing that stuff at his aunt's Christmas party, but there was still a lot of fun. It also was my first time going to the beach. We stood hand-in-hand looking at Angela who was taking the picture. The beach was in the background with a line of waves crashing down. The sun was setting behind us which made us look kind of like we were glowing. Our faces beamed with giant smiles before a bright flash lit us up and then quickly faded away. The picture was one that we'd be keeping forever. As he continued rummaging through my stuff his cell phone rang. The caller didn't seem familiar, but he answered anyways. "Hello?" he asked casually. "I need a Jared Mayer." the other voice said. "Speaking," "Do you know Kevin Scavo?" Illnesses can take on many forms. Those of the body are easy to treat. Much more difficult are the hidden maladies that fester in our hearts, the secret addictions that consume our souls, and the diseases we deny which affect our judgment. To survive we need to find that special someone who can heal us. But we can never predict who will have the cure for what ails us... "Yes, he's my boyfriend." ...or when they'll show up. * * * * * * * * I hope you enjoyed this chapter. The end is coming closer to the story.
