Chapter 4 Evan lied in his bed later that night staring absent-mindedly at the ceiling playing catch with himself with a baseball that he had from when he was younger, his phone went off and he reached over to answer it. Christy was on the line. "Hey baby? What's up?" He asked, as if nothing was wrong. "Don't you even dare! Don't baby me!" She said very pissed off. "What is your problem?" Evan asked catching an attitude of his own. "You know what my problem is. What is today?" Christy asked finally calming herself down. "It's Friday, and..." Evan began to realize. "Oh damn. Christy I am so sorry. I totally forgot about our date earlier." "What's been going on? You've been coming really distant from me lately and I feel like I might lose you soon. You're my best friend and my boyfriend, I love you far too much to let this go by unnoticed. Now please baby just tell me what's going on." She asked, he could hear her resolve breaking over the phone, his own heart beginning to sink. On one hand he wanted to tell her that he's changing that he is falling out of love with her, but on the other hand another side of him wants to make this work until the very end he could learn to fall back in love with the life he was living before Max came into his life. "Nothing. Baby, you know I love you, I will always love. You will never ever lose me I promise. Let me make it up to you, with dinner tomorrow night." Evan asked her practically pleading. Christy didn't have to think twice before forgiving him and accepting his proposal. "Awesome I love you baby. Good night." He hung up the phone and stared at the ceiling, knowing full well that he had partially lied to her. Once again Evan had willed himself to turn things back to normal. The next day was normal except that Evan had gone out to the jewelers and the flower shop before his date with Christy. At about 6 he arrived in a maroon dress shirt and black pants. He rang the doorbell and Christy mother answered. "Christy, Evan is here." She called letting him inside. "Hello Evan, how are you dear?" She said shutting the door and moving past him. "I'm doing well Mrs. Berkeley." Evan responded. Christy came down the stairs right after he had said that and she made her way to the door. "Good to know dear. Be sure to have her home in before 2 AM" Mrs. Berkeley said giggling. Christy rolled her eyes, definitely not pleased with her mothers musings.. As they got to Evan's car he raced in front of her to open the car door and let her in. A few short minutes later they were on the road and Evan could feel the negativity. "So baby, how'd you spend your day?" Evan said gripping her hand. "Ugh, the same old boring stuff." She said neutrally. "Well you are gonna have a really good night. I promise." He said finally giving her hand a tender kiss she looked over at him and smiled. They drove for another half hour to a very nice and fancy place that Christy loved but they didn't go to very often. When they were about 5 minutes away he told her to close her eyes. He pulled into the parking lot and pulled the bouquet of roses from the backseat. He opened her door and lead her out, reminding her to keep her eyes closed. They walked up to the building and into the fancy lobby. "Okay open your eyes." Evan said beaming. Christy opened her eyes to view the beautiful gilded room with flawless marble floors. "Oh baby, La Maison de Perle. Thank you" She said giving him a big kiss. He put his arm around her and then walked up to the concierge. "Hi. I have a reservation for two for Lonzo." Evan said to the MaŚtre D. "Ah yes." The man said, "Very lucky for you to have gotten a reservation today." He said almost snappishly. "Follow me." The couple followed the MaŚtre D to the back of the restaurant where it was quiet. "The waiter will be by shortly to take your orders" The MaŚtre D said and walked away to deal with other patrons. "So I figure we could take tonight to just talk." Evan said. "Anything in particular?" Christy asked fearing the worst. "No, well yea kind of." Evan stated unsurely. "The thing I've been thinking about was that I'm just not sure about things any more, you know? Like where I am going after this, I'm not even sure what I want to do with my life yet. I'm thinking I might just apply for Yale. My dad went there, my cousin went there. I think I'd be the only one not going to Yale." The waiter come over and poured them water, and took their order. "I mean he wants me to be a lawyer, I don't know if I want to do that." "Honor thy father and mother, my love. I think you'd be a great lawyer." Christy said taking a sip of her water. "Yea I guess it wouldn't be that bad." Evan said leaning over the table to kiss her. The waiter came back with their drinks and took their food order. "There was something else I wanted to tell you. Christy, I don't think I will ever find anyone else quite like you. You are my life and I don't know what I would do if I lost you, so I bought you this." He pulled the small velvet case from his jacket and presented it to her. "This is my promise to you. To be there when you need me, to love no one else but you the way I do now." "Oh sweetheart, I love you too." Christy said they shared a passionate kiss and began to talk about more general things until the food came. After about an hour and a half the bill was paid and the walked out to the car. Neither of them ready to go home. He drove to a lookout spot also known as Lovers Point. Evan parked and got out of his car and opened the door for Christy, the two sat on the hood and stared up into the sky. "Baby, tonight was excellent thank you." She leaned over and kissed him passionately, with every second the kissing got more intense until they were going at it full on. Evan unzipped her dress and caressed her breasts subtly and his shirt was off and pushed back. They kissed more and with more intensity. They switched places and Christy ended up on top of him, kissing him fiercely she undid he belt and opened his pants. "Wait. Wait. Christy." Evan said knowing what was coming, but his objections fell on deaf ears. "Christy! Stop!" He said finally pushing her off of him. "We've been through this before, I'm not ready to do anything else. So please just give me some time." Christy annoyed pulled back on her dress and zipped it up. "Take me home." She said emotionless. "Okay." Evan said just as annoyed, she was becoming a bitch because he didn't want to have sex. Great. He thought to himself. He wasn't going to get into this tonight. The ride home was eerily quiet and neither of them wanted to say anything to the other. He pulled up to her house and he looked to give her a kiss goodnight, but with no words she got out of the car and walked up to her porch and went inside. Evan threw his head back and sighed and headed home. It was close to midnight and he drove with a lot on his mind. He pulled onto his street and in to his driveway, when he saw a dark silhouette of someone leaning on the brick post of his fence. "Excuse me, but this is private property." He walked cautiously to the figure not knowing what he was dealing with. "Oh sorry." The voice said his body slender with a little bit of muscle. Evan recognized that voice. "Max?" He asked genuinely surprised. "Evan? Hi what are you doing out here?" Max asked being equally surprised. Evan chuckled. "I live here. I can ask you the same question. What are you doing out so late? It's almost midnight." Evan asked. "I just doing a little bit of jogging, you know just to clear my head." Max said. Evan could still see his brown eyes shining in the dark. "Would you like some company? I could sure use time to clear my head." Evan said. Max simply nodded and smiled. "Awesome, let me go change." Evan smiled and bolted inside to get changed and Max stood outside quietly. A few minutes later Max and Evan began jogging down the street just chatting away. About a mile later they came to a park and decided it was a good time for a break. "So Christy was absolutely pissed last night." Evan said nonchalantly taking a seat on the bench, the moon was high in the night sky. "Oh? Why?" Max asked slightly more concentrated on his running than the current conversation. "I forgot last night was date night and she saw us driving away." "Shit. I'm sorry." Max said apologetically. "Nah, it isn't your fault. I don't know what's going on with her all of sudden she always moody and pissed off at me for no apparent reason. Maybe it's just her being a chick." Evan said sighing. "Or she could be pregnant." Max said seriously. "That's likely, I won't have sex with her. I mean it's not that I don't want to but I've always been known to wait until I was ready and until I was sure she was the right one. A year ago I would have gone for it but I wasn't ready, but now I'm not so certain she's the right one. Here I was thinking guys were pushy but boy was I wrong." Max just stayed quiet but let out a soft chuckle. "What about you? Have you ever, you know?" "Me? N-no?" Max said completely caught off guard and let out a nervous laugh. "Really? I'd think you'd have girls practically throwing themselves at you. Perfect smile, deep brown eyes, and your build is amazing you're skinny but you've got some muscle to you. Not to mention you're really down to earth and easy to talk to." Evan found himself entranced by Max, who was blushing like crazy. Evan caught himself before he would say something he would regret. "I mean, not that I'm gay or anything." Max's smile wavered a little bit. "Look, Evan." Max said, his mind was made up and now was the right time to tell Evan what he needed to know. Evan had this comfort in his eyes that made Max feel safe. "I need to tell you something." He took a deep breath and revealed his secret before he had any second thoughts. "I'm gay and now that you know that I would understand if you didn't want to be friends anymore. You wouldn't be the first one." Max said jumping off the bench and began to run away. It took a second for Evan to realize what just happened and he bolted off the bench after the boy. "Max wait up!" Evan called to him, and put his football practice to good use and took off in a sprint after him. He finally caught up with him and grabbed his arm. "Max...please...stop." Evan said catching his breath. "What?" Max asked harshly his defenses was up fearing what Evan wanted to do to him. Evan was still catching his breath. "Look I know what you were going to say so just save us both the trouble." Evan finally stood straight up. "What was I going to say? Huh?" Evan said. "You took off before I could even say anything. Look Max." Evan said gripping the smaller boys shoulders. "I don't care. You can gay, straight, or whatever I pick my friends no one else. I'm sorry that in the past you've dealt with jerk-offs who leave you high and dry, but I won't do that." Evan said. Tears began strolling down Max's face touched by Evan's compassion. "I've been taught better." Evan said softly. He pulled the boy in for a hug and they stood there in an embrace for a few moments before pulling apart. They began to walk back. "Damn you're a fast runner." "Sometimes you have to be when your gay." Max responded. "Well, you can put that more practical use, no one will ever mess with you not while I'm around. I meant that before and I sure as hell mean it now." Evan said trying to be serio-comical. "Thanks." Was the only word Max said.
