Chapter 7 Evan hated having to say good bye to Max after dropping him off but as they say all good things come to an end. This is so different for me. I never in a million years figured I'd be so mad over a guy. I was always taught that homosexuality was wrong but how could something that feels so right, be so wrong? Evan thought to himself pulled into his driveway and turned off the car and walked towards the house trying to be as quiet as he could. He opened the front door and tiptoed across the hardwood floor to the stairs. Making it past his parent's bedroom he finally got to his room and undressed for the night. Lying on the bed he felt, something he hadn't felt in a long time. He was content. Monday morning streamed through the window and Evan couldn't have felt better. He got himself ready to go and as everyone was sitting around the table for breakfast, Evan was bolting out the door to his car. A few moments later he pulled up Max's house and honked the horn a couple of times. Max peeked out of the door and gave him a sign that said hold on. After a couple of minutes Max was bouncing down his walkway to the car Evan opened the door letting Max in. The kissed each other good morning as Evan drove off. During the night Evan thought of something he hadn't previously thought about. What will they think at school? Being with Max is fantastic but what about school. The thought crossed Evan mind as they made the trip to school. "Hey Max?" Evan asked not quite sure how to bring his concerns to Max. "What's up?" Max looked over and flashed his perfect smile to Evan. "Everything is great and I don't want you to think is because of you, but can we keep the PDA for just us, I'm not ready to come out yet." Evan said avoiding eye contact. Without saying a word Max reached over and grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly. "Of course." They stopped at a red light and took the chance to steal a kiss that they cherished throughout the day. The day seemed to be normal with the hottest topic recently being Evan and Christy nasty break up. When Evan and Max would see each other in the hallway or at lunch they would always steal a glance. When the bell rang Evan made his way out to his car, having quit football he didn't have any more practices. He was clearing the exit to the building when Christy came up and grabbed his hand. "Hi baby." She whispered in his ear. He whipped around and shook her hand from her. "What do you want?" Evan said nastily. "I want us to be together again. I made a mistake I shouldn't have cheated on you." Christy said siren-like, her words ringed in his ears sounding like the sweetest bell choir. "There isn't any us. I don't care if you made a mistake. I have overlooked too many of your mistakes. Sleeping with Darren was...is something I can't forgive. Besides there is someone else. Good bye Christy. And don't call me baby." Evan said coldly as he turned around and began towards his car again. Christy resolved to win her man back from whatever hussy had him under her spell. When Evan got to his car Max was waiting patiently, sending text messages to friends. "Hey babe," Evan said unlocking the doors and throwing his bag in the back seat. "Hi." Max said, he loved the sound of Evan calling him babe. "So how was your day?" Evan said, he started his car and pulled out of the parking lot. "Good, not much except for the very interesting things I'm hearing about your break up with Christy." Max said. "Speaking of, why were you talking to her?" "Nothing you need to worry about, she's trying to get me back." Evan said, he turned up the heat a little bit and continued to focus on the road. The rest of the ride was quiet which was accompanied by some light chit-chat. Evan pulled up to Max's house and they shared another kiss before Max got out and walked up to his front door where he waved Evan away. Evan waved and then drove off towards his house. Evan pulled into driveway and went into his house, he walked up to his bedroom and started on his homework a couple of hours later Evan heard his name followed by the word dinner. He bounded down the stairs and headed into the dining room where the table was set as if it were a picture of the perfect 1950's family dinner, minus the meat loaf and June Cleaver. He gathered at the table and sat next to his little brother. Soon enough the res t of the family joined. "Evan would you mind saying grace?" His mother asked. "I think Sarah has wanted to say grace." Evan said pushing off the task to his younger sister. She said the prayer and then the family at in an uncomfortable silence. Mrs. Lonzo looked up at her husband who refused to make eye contact with Evan and vice versa, her two other children 14 year old Sarah and 8 year old Dylain. She let out a deep sigh and prayed for some normalcy at dinner. "So Evan. How was school today?" She asked trying desperately to break the horrible tension in the air. "It was okay." He said never looking up. "Sarah? How about you?" Sarah was never one to always have something to say regardless of when it was and whether it was relevant. "It was good. You'd never guess what I heard. I heard from Shauna who knows Rebecca who's older sister is Jenna who is friends with Christy and I heard that Evan and Christy broke up." The moment she said this, the world stopped and Evan choked on his water. "Is this true Evan?" His mother asked, everyone's eyes were now on him. He quietly nodded. "Why didn't you say something to us? That would have answered a lot of questions you're father's and my questions." "Now Janet, that still doesn't redeem him from missing the day of the Lord." Mr. Lonzo said "I couldn't manage to see her. She cheated on me. She slept with someone else behind my back, that's why I left the game the reason, other than I hated the sport, I quit." The table fell silent covered now with an awkward atmosphere. "May I be excused?" Without waiting for an answer Evan got up from the table and took his stuff into the kitchen and went up the back staircase to his bedroom. He picked up his drawing pad and flipped through the pages, stopping on the sketch of Max. He found a new page and began to scribble. After about an hour he heard a faint knock. Suddenly alert he called out. "Who is it?" He quickly stashed his drawing book under an open text book to make it look like he was doing. "It's your mother, I bought cheesecake and I thought I'd bring you a slice." She said in a affectionate voice. He called her in, she walked in taking in the room in all its messy glory, she looked at the walls and for the first noticed his art work. "No matter how many times I have been in this room, I've noticed your art work. It's nice." She put the cheesecake on his desk and walked over to Evan's bed and sat next to him. "Thanks. Listen about dinner-" Evan began. His mother smiled and put her hand on top of his. "Evan it's okay honey. You don't have to explain. You shouldn't let this thing with Christy ruin you. You're smarter than that, and she's not the brightest if she went and destroyed everything she had. She will never find a guy that will love her and treat her like you did." "Mom, she had been cheating on me for a while. I should have seen it coming; I mean what kind of high school boy doesn't want to have sex with the head cheerleader?" Evan asked trying to lighten the mood. "A smart boy, who will know when he wants to give away his virginity, you may be 18 and close to graduating high school but you are still my baby. I will always love you regardless of what decisions you make in the future. You can always tell me anything." Mrs. Lonzo leaned over and gave her son a peck on the forehead. She got up and headed towards the door. "Mom." Evan piped up, at that moment he contemplated telling his mother his secret. "When do you think dad will realize I will make my own choices?" "I don't know hon. You're just gonna have to wait." With that statement she closed the door behind her, leaving Evan alone with his thoughts. The rest of the week proved to be uneventful, nothing but a few unwanted advances from Christy, and each time being as determined as ever. Friday finally rolled around and it was only two weeks from first semester finals and the stress was in the air. Classes were dismissed that afternoon with the usual cheers from students as they exited the building, talking with friends and making plans for the weekend. Evan had received a text from Max that morning saying that he wasn't feeling very well, so Evan had no reason to stick around. In a desperate attempt to flee the watchful eyes of Christy he walked to his car as quickly as he could. "Hey Evs!" He heard a voice call to him. He whipped around and saw Riley running up towards him. "Hey Ry." Evan responded, they turned to walk to the parking lot and Evan looked over his shoulder just in case his jealous ex decided to hunt him down for the 4th time that day. "Where were you bolting off too?" Riley asked looking over his shoulder as well. "I just don't want to deal with Christy, she's been after all week. She apparently didn't get the memo about us being broken up." Evan said, they reached Evan's car and he leaned against it. "I'm still really sorry about that bro. I still wanna smash Darren's face in, but what's the good in both of us not being captain of the team?" Riley attempted a joke which seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. "Hey so listen, a couple of us are taking a break from studying and going bowling tomorrow night. You in?" "I don't know I have plans to hang out." Evan said, carefully choosing his words. "No problem, bring Max along." Riley said without missing a beat. Evan just stood with a look of astonishment on his face. "Dude I don't care who you hang out with just as long as you're not queer." Evan gave him a look that could kill an entire army. "Dude, calm down. It was a joke. Anyway will I see you tomorrow?" Evan had to think about it before he responded. "Yea I guess so." "Sweet!" Riley said giving Evan a high five they parted ways and Evan got into his car and drove to Max's house. A few minutes later he arrived at the small manor and walked up to doorstep. Before knocking he brushed off any concern that he had, because in the past Max had a knack for finding and exploiting them. He knocked a few times and then waited until it was opened. "Hi Linda." Evan said walking in as she held the door open for him. "Evan! What a pleasant surprise! Maxie is upstairs, that is the last time I order from the House of Pe- King Chinese." She said shutting the door behind her. Evan thanked her and then headed up the stairs. He followed the soft melody of music to a shut door. He knocked softly a few times and then hearing no response he turned the knob gently and quietly walked into the dim room, the only light streaming in through the tightly shut curtains. Spotting the sleeping mass he quietly kicked off his shoes and crawled into bed with Max. "Don't you think this is a little forward?" Max said sleepily. "What? I'm not doing anything." Evan said, a smile beginning to creep across his face. "Not yet." Max responded with a chuckle. "You know how I feel about the whole sex thing." Evan said somewhat defensively. Max turned his body over and then cuddled up next to Evan, with his head laying on Evan's chest, feeling the soft rises of heart. After laying there for a few minutes the song changed and a familiar lyric played through the room. Heart beats fast, colors and promises, how to be brave... "I love this song." Max said. "I've been thinking, you should know a little bit of my history." "You aren't a porn star are you?" Evan asked seriously. "What? No! My mom would murder me." Max adjusted himself so he was looking Evan straight in the eyes. "I have been with guys, and they always seem to follow the same pattern. They are great guys who just seem to be good to true, and I wanna make sure that what we have is different." Max put his head down and a few tears began to appear "Of course it is." Evan said picking up Max's chin. He gently wiped the tears from his eyes. "I don't want you to think I'm like those guys. I thought I was living a dream when I was with Christy, but now I understand this is my dream. You are my dream, and there is nothing that can change that." The gazed into each other's eyes and shared a kiss that seemed to fall in line perfectly with one of the chorus', I have died everyday waiting for you, darling don't be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years and I will love you for a thousand more. They fell asleep perfectly cuddled together. Unbeknownst to them Max had opened the door to check on them, and saw Max's head resting on Evan's chest both eyes closed. After about a couple of hours, the boys were woken by a delicious smell that seemed to lure them to the kitchen. They stumbled into the kitchen a little groggy, but very hungry. "Mm. What smells so good?" Evan asked his mouth practically watering. "I know what it is." Max piped up with a smile on his face. "Chicken Parmesan with spaghetti, yum." He quickly walked over to the cabinet and pulled out the plates, and directed Evan to the silverware. They quickly had the table set and had dinner, the time ticked by like nothing and they were finally done with their meal. After about an hour more of talking over some television show, Evan decided it was time to go. Evan and Max walked out to his car. "Do you have to go?" Max said putting on his best pouty face. "Yes. My parents would flip a shit, like you have no idea. Oh! Before I forget do you wanna go bowling tomorrow night?" Evan said pulling Max in close to him. "Mm. Sure. I haven't been in a while. I'm sure my game is gonna suck though." Max said giggling cutely. To say that Evan wasn't being turned on is a huge lie, and an understatement at times. "Ow. Watch where you point that thing." Max said devilishly. "What? Huh?" Evan said, after he realized what Max was referring to, he blushed profusely. Max laughed at Evan's modesty. Before getting into his car, he and Max shared a quick kiss and waited until Max was safely on the sidewalk before driving off. A very satisfied Max walked back up to the house and closed the door behind him. "Maxie, do you want some ice cream?" His mother called from the kitchen. "Sure." He said curling up on the couch in a t-shirt and sweats watching some dumb television show. A few minutes later Linda walked into the living room with two bowls of vanilla ice cream and handed one to Max. They ate in silence, with Max none the wiser about what was going to happen. "So Maxie." Linda asked nonchalantly licking the spoon. "How long have you and Evan been dating?" Max almost choked on his spoon from the sheer bluntness of the question. "Excuse me?" He said managing to breath. "You heard me." She said almost strictly, Max knew better than to even try to dance around it. "I had my suspicion at first, but what really confirmed it was seeing you two asleep in each other's arms. It was so cute." She said letting out a slight chuckle. Max had to mental kick himself and then made a mental reminder to tell Evan to lock the door next time. "Well it hasn't been long, maybe about two weeks or so." Max said, he was relieved that he could tell her. Of course she knew he was gay and she's even met some of his previous boyfriends, and she wasn't usually interested if she didn't have a good feeling about it. "Well you keep this one. I have a good feeling." Linda said smiling at her son. Max smiled back and continued to eat his ice cream. Evan got home and headed straight for his room, he had gotten there a little before curfew. He took a shower, threw on a pair of boxers and lied in bed. Max's words swam through his head, soon enough Evan realized that he loved Max. But could he say the words? Was it too soon? After thinking Evan resolved to not tell Max until he knew he was ready. He soon fell into a peaceful sleep. The next morning came quickly, but thankfully it was a Saturday so Evan could sleep in. He finally got up at about 11ish. Groggily he pulled on some pajama bottoms and a t-shirt and saw Sarah and Dylain, indulging in the childhood pleasures of Saturday morning, Evan thought back to the days when he would get up at 9 pour himself a bowl of cereal and zone out on the couch. "Morning squirts" Evan said lazily, he walked past Dylain and as usual ruffled his hair. He walked into the kitchen and poured himself some cereal after he was satisfied with what he had poured himself he headed back into the living room and found his siblings watching an old episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles. Instinctively he sat next to Dylain. Evan was always close to Dylain, although Dylain wasn't old enough to understand he would listen and ask questions when Evan would watch the news. He was too smart for his own good some times and was becoming somewhat of a smart aleck, this is no doubt the work of Sarah. They sat in silence and suddenly Dylain sprung up. "Teenade Mutat Turtles!" He yelled with glee, next thing Evan and Sarah knew was Dylain had launched upstairs to do God knows what. It was too cute and Evan couldn't help but laugh. "So who's the new girl?" Sarah said out of the blue. "What?" Evan responded not knowing what she was talking about. "I heard from Shauna whose friend is Rebecca who's older sister is Jenna who's friends with Christy that there is another girl in your life. So who is she?" "Look you don't know what you're talking about." Evan said trying to save face, his sister was, as sure as the sun rises, a gossiper. "Or is it a boy?" Sarah said jokingly. Furiously Evan got up. "Look you don't know what you're talking about! So just shut up. So why don't you run back to your hen circle and tell them to check their sources!" Evan said angrily. He stormed into the kitchen and put his bowl carefully into the sink cleaning up whatever mess he or his siblings left around. It didn't feel good to react this way when his sexuality would be questioned, he was okay with it but did he need to save face with his family? It was all so confusing to him and he just didn't understand a lot of it. What he did know for certain was that Max was in his life to stay. "Relax. It was joke Evan" Sarah called from the living room. He rubbed it off and went up to his room. Bowling was at 8:00 so he had time a lot of time to kill before he had to get ready to pick up Max. He began to make a mental list of things that he needed to do, and college applications were a top priority, he went online and did some research on what schools he wanted to UCLA was one, CalArts was another one and University of California followed by a few others. He then took on the horrendous task of looking for scholarships which would be prove be difficult for no reason other than it's a lame task. After that managed to kill some time he decided to take a nap. He closed his eyes and all he could think about Max, his eyes, his feel, his smell and the taste of his lips, a slight orange-strawberry taste. Weird right? Nonetheless those things drove Evan wild and it wasn't long until he felt a stirring in his crotch. Then another idea came to mind. After finishing his business he slipped into a blissful sleep. His alarm went off at around 6ish, and he sprung up and went into the bathroom to begin getting ready. While in the bathroom he spent extra time on his hair. He threw on a hot pink polo and some jeans and topped of the ensemble with a pair of original style Chuck Taylors then tied it all together with the citrusy scent of Polo Ralph Lauren Big Pony #4. It was 7 when he made his way downstairs, he walked into the kitchen and was greeted by his mother. "Hey hon. Wow look at you. Hot date tonight?" She asked taking in the stunning sight of her baby boy. "Not really, just going bowling." He said blushing a little. "Will Christy be there, you two do share the same friends." These words put a melon sized dent in Evan's ego and it deflated almost instantly. "I really hope not." Evan said taking a seat at the counter. "On the off-chance she is, you will make her insanely jealous." His mother said almost sneakily. Evan grinned widely and looked at his watch. "I gotta go." He walked over to his mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks" "Yup, it's my job." She said wiping down the counter she was working on. "Have fun and don't stay out late." Evan walked out his car and followed the familiar sign's to Max's house. He went up to the door and knocked, it opened and as usual Linda was there. "Good Evening, Evan. Max is just upstairs getting ready, he should be down soon. Please have a seat, relax." Linda said leading him into the living room. The silence wasn't awkward but still a little deafening. "So Evan, may I ask what you're intentions are with my son?" Evan instantly turned red, and uncomfortable. "I, uh, I'm sorry. Excuse me?" Evan said, he was having what he could only describe as an "Oh Shit" moment. "I'm not sure I understand." Linda just chuckled to herself. "There is no reason to clam up, just relax." She said. Evan tried his hardest to take her advice and it only helped relieve his tension a little bit. "Now, You make him happy, I haven't seen that look on his face since his first boyfriend." "Well I guess the cat is out of the bag now." Evan said trying to lighten the mood. "I have nothing but the purest intentions. Max makes me feel things that I could only describe from a dream and I'm lucky to have him." Linda just smiled. "How'd you know?" "Well I saw you two cuddled up in his bed yesterday and I saw the way you looked at each other." She said looking at Evan. "No, I meant Max, did he come out to you or did you figure it out." Evan said with a concern. "Ah." Linda said deeply, she got up and sat on the seat next to Evan. "I knew. As a mother you kinda just have your instincts, I knew when he began to walk. But I never pressed for anything, I knew that as long as I was open and displayed such things, that in his own time he would come to me. I take it you haven't told your parents?" Linda asked, already knowing the answer. "No. I can't. This doesn't exist in the world my parents live in. I was raised with the bible shoved down my throat and it just doesn't exist to them. The first time I came over here, it was because my dad said fag and it hurt me so much, I just had to leave." Evan began tearing up. "Evan. Don't worry about that. You aren't responsible for how you turn out and if your parents believe in God as strongly as you are lead to believe they do then they should realize that you are exactly the way He intended you to be. No parent who hates their child for something far beyond their control should be allowed to have children. I want you to know this. Dating Maxie or not, if anything ever happens you can come straight here, and you will have a place for as long as you need." Linda said finally pulling him into a tight hug. They released each other and Evan wiped his tears. "Thanks Linda." He said genuinely. Max came racing down the stairs all abuzz with excitement. "Oh My God! We are gonna be so late I'm so sorry." He said looking into the living room. He was wearing a tight fitting A&F T-shirt and skinny jeans. "Wow. You are very, very irresistible right now." Evan said walking over to Max. Evan took in his boyfriend and hugged him from behind and began kissing his neck. As hot and bothered as it made him Max needed to stop this, not here, not now. "Hey we need to go and besides not in front of my mother." He said. "Don't mind me. I'm just watching Jeopardy." Linda laughed. The boys made their way to the front door, hand in hand. "Have fun!" She called out to them. The boys entered the car and started for their destination. "Okay what was that thing with my mom?" Max asked mocking being offended. "Nothing, I was just asking advice. I was thinking about coming out to them but I just don't know when." Evan said paying attention to the road. "Oh babe." Max said picking up his hand and kissing it gently. "When do you think you'll be ready?" "Could be tomorrow, or a couple of months, I don't know." Evan said calmly. "Well, whenever you choose to. I'll be there for you." Max said, he kissed Evan's hands and released it. The couple drove for maybe another 10 minutes until getting to bowling alley. They walked up to the counter and Evan paid for both of them and heard the unmistakable sound of Christy's obnoxious laugh. "Oh God she's here." Evan whispered. "Don't worry babe just ignore her." Max said, they walked down to the far end of the bowling alley and exchanged salutations with the friends. "Evan, this is Charlie." Christy said obviously trying to make Evan jealous. "Wassup dude?" Charlie said flipping back his long dirty blonde hair and giving Evan and Max a handshake. "Charlie is my new boyfriend." Christy said. Charlie snuck a hand up her chest and grabbed one of her boobs as if he was grabbed a carton of milk. She instantly slapped his hand. "Hey are we all ready to play a game?" Riley asked. Everyone agreed and then divvied themselves into two groups, Riley, Evan, Max, and Lindsey against Charlie, Christy Shauna and her boyfriend Eddie. They played a few games and every now and then Evan and Max would share a look that hopefully went unnoticed by the others and even more often than not Christy said things like "Charlie not in the bowling alley or Charlie, you're so cute." Eventually it became a bit much and Evan stood up. "I'm gonna take a break. Max wanna come outside with me?" Evan began walking up the little set of stairs to the lobby. Max complied and headed out with him, while Riley decided to get two large pizzas. After they were gone Christy promptly got up from Charlie's lap. "Okay, here's the deal you touch my ass again and I will make damn sure you don't have kids." She said sternly with that she made her way to look for Evan. She wanted him back and was going to pull out the final stop she was going to appeal to his basic human instinct, sympathy. "I don't understand her." Evan said, the two walked around one of the corners to the building and Evan leaned against it. "Don't try, she's a woman. I don't even understand her. Besides I doubt she's actually dating that guy. He looks like she picked him up from beach." Max said trying to make him laugh. Evan chuckled and held him close. "Besides does she really think, you'd trade me for her?" "This is true." Evan said. Under the shade of darkness they shared a care-free kiss. The instant their lips locked and their eyes closed Christy had rounded the corner and stopped dead in her tracks but what she saw. Evan Lonzo? Gay? Forget a pity party, I'm going back to revenge. She thought to herself she walked back around the corner and an evil smile appeared across her face. They broke the kiss and Max yawned lightly. "Tired?" "Just a little tired." Max said. "You wanna go? I'm kinda beat even though I took a three hour nap today?" Evan asked. "No it's fun if you wanna just hang out for a little while longer." Max said waving of Evan's concern. "You sure?" Evan asked reassuringly. Max nodded and headed to the front door to the bowling alley followed closely by Evan. They ate pizza and hung out for a while longer until it was time to go. The group walked out together, said their goodbyes and parted ways. Christy walked to her car and pulled out her phone and hit a number in her recent calls. "Hey Darren, it's Christy. You won't believe what I just found out.
