Blind Love

by Sam Lakes

I froze. I could feel my face burning with embarrassment.

"Father, why are you mad?" Alex asked.

"I think you should direct that question to the actor sitting next to you."

"Hawk, what's going on?"

I sat there. A few minutes ago I was so happy I had a friend now that was gone. My insides were churning like a tornado was going on. This was the end. How could I have been so stupid, so uncaring?

"Hawken? Father? Will someone please tell me what's going on."

"I lied! I'm not blind. I tried to tell your dad but he wouldn't listen to me He-he said you needed a friend. I wanted to tell you but you were so excited and happy I didn't want to loose that. I-I'm sorry." I got up left for first class and header to the lavatory almost running.

I sat in the lavatory for ten minutes. The one chance I had at making a friend my age and I fucked up. I washed my face and returned to my seat.

Mom looked like the cat that ate the mouse.

"You don't need to have a cripple as a friend," she said.

What she said made me so angry. I sat there fuming and she knew it. I had had it. "You know Jocelyn when you aren't so drugged with cocaine or whatever it was you took last night you might be a pleasant person. I don't know where your getting you're money to buy the stuff, maybe my lawyer can find that out."

She really caught me off guard as her hand slapped my face hard. "You little fagot's bastard, don't you ever threaten me."

My face really stung but I managed to keep my composure. From the look on the flight attendants face she had seen the whole thing. I stood up opened the storage compartment, removed my carry on and walked up to the flight attendant.

"Are you all right?" she asked.

"Could I sit somewhere else?" I asked.

"All of first class is full."

"If I found someone in coach who is willing to trade could I trade seats?"

"Yes."

I walked back to coach. I saw Mr. Ambrose who gave me a dirty threatening scowl. I ignored him and looked at Alex. He looked sad almost like he'd been crying. My heart felt like it was breaking. I looked behind them. There was a sort of heavy man sitting behind Mr. Ambrose and an empty seat.

"Sir, " I asked the heavy man behind Mr. Ambrose, "Would you like to sit in first class for the rest of the trip?"

"Sure." He nodded towards Alex and gave me a thumb-up sign, a smile, then stood up and let me have his seat leaving happily left for first class.

"Alex," I said quietly he didn't respond. "I'm sorry. The situation got out of hand. I wasn't doing it to hurt you. I make a stupid mistake. I got caught up in the excitement of making a new friend. You see I don't have a lot of friends. I've never been allowed to have friends."

"I am sorry for not being honest but I was scared if I told you the truth you'd hate me and think that I was just playing a game. At first when I got on the plane I was just acting. But when I saw you and saw you were my age and thought maybe we could be friends. I'm really sorry."

"Are you really an actor?" he asked softly.

"Yes. Well, I'm a model. I've been in TV commercials and an extra in movies and I do voiceovers for a cartoon."

"Excuse me?" asked a lady standing in the aisle.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Are you Hawk, Hawk Sugarstone?"

"Yes ma'am."

"I thought so. My daughter and I saw you at Universal Studios. You were fantastic! My daughter now has the biggest crush on you! She's twelve and was really disappointed we couldn't get to say hello."

"Thanks," I said shyly.

"Could I ask a big favor of you?"

"What's that?"

"Could I video tape you saying hello to her and maybe do one of those cute voices?"

"I would love to but I'll have to use my own voice because I don't own the character voices that I do -- the studio owns them."

I guess I was trying to impress Alex and his dad so I let scamper out, "go get your camera! Camera! Camera!"

She went off excitedly to get her camera.

"Hawk. Do you still want me to be your friend?"

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" I answered in Scamper's. "Me too, because he likes cats," Purrball answered.

"Alex likes dogs too! So he's my friend! And I am his best, best, best, friend! Cuz I'm a dog!" argued Scamper.

"Alex, tell him I am your best friend ever cuz he's only a K4.5!" said Purrball.

"A K4.5?" Alex laughed. His laugh was so sweet, so beautiful to my ears.

"Yeah," I answered in my own voice, "He's only half a dog. You know K9." I giggled. He laughed and although most would think the conversation we just had was crazy. He was talking to me and wanted to be my friend. That was all that mattered.

I guess Mr. Ambrose forgave me too because he stood up, smiled at me and said, "You know it would be much easier to talk if you two were sitting together." We swapped places.

They lady returned with her video camera. She told me her daughter's name was Sharon. Then she started recording.

"Hi Sharon! I'm Hawken Sugarstone, but you know that because you saw me at Universal. Well, I hope you liked the show and I am really sorry I didn't get to talk to you after the show so I hope this makes up for it."

I put the seat arm up separating Alex and I, grabbed him around the shoulder and pulled him up tight against me so he was in camera.

"And this is my best friend Alex Ambrose!" Alex turned a deep red, "Say `hi' Alex."

Alex shyly said `Hi.' And waved. I swear it took everything in me not to kiss him right then. He is so cute.

The lady was happy and left.

"I knew you were sighted. I should have said something but I didn't," he said quietly.

"You knew? How?" I asked looking at him.

"We were talking and I asked you favorite color and you said blue, light blue like your eyes."

I giggled, "I did say that, didn't I?"

"Yeah, you did." We both started giggling and laughing. I don't know why we were laughing but we were and it felt good.

"Hawk, I want to apologize, I was wrong for assuming that you were just playing some kind of mean trick," said Mr. Ambrose.

"It's okay Mr. Ambrose everything is fine now," I smiled.

Alex and I spent the rest of the flight just talking and enjoying each other's company. They announced our arrival at Heathrow in fifteen minutes. I thought I'd be happy but I wasn't and I guess it showed in my voice.

"Hawken? What's wrong?"

"Nothing. We're just landing soon."

"Yeah. We'll be going our way and you and your Mom your way - I don't want it to end," he muttered.

Neither did I. I felt comfortable with Alex we had lots of things in common. I don't know if I was falling in love with him or not I just wanted to spend more time with him to be his friend and for him to be my friend.

"Alex? Maybe I could come and visit you in Lingfield. Do they have a hotel there?"

"Don't know but you could stay with us," he said and turned around in his to address his father, "Father could Hawken stay with us when he comes to visit?"

"Of course, Alex. When does he plan to visit?"

I turned around to talk to him, "Possibly, next week, sir."

"Well, that would be fine. Just give us a call when you have your plans finalized."

"Thank you, sir."

I was so happy and I could see that Alex was happy too.

"I can't wait, Hawken. I am sure we shall become the best of friends," Alex said.

"What we aren't already?" I said rather disappointedly.

"Well, I feel like we are, but I didn't know how you felt," he said with a coy smile.

"I really like you Alex. It's like -- well you're my best friend. I only have a few friends and no one close to my age except Teri and she lives in Australia and is my cousin."

"But you're a model and actor and singer you should have millions of friends."

"I'm not famous. It's all work, Alex -- just work except for the other day. I did make friends, Peter is thirty-four. Trent, he's thirty-four, too. Jane, she's Trent's wife and Jill are in their twenties."

"Well, then I guess we are best friends because I don't have a lot of friends either and I like the idea of being your best friend. I thought you were just goofing off when you said I was your best friend to that lady -- you weren't, were you?"

"Nope. You are my best friend."

As we were coming in on final approach it really hit me that after we land Alex and his dad would be going their own way and I would be going my way. It was like I missed him already and I reached over and took his hand. I loved the softness of his hand.

I felt like crying but I held it back. "I'm going to miss you," said straining not to get emotional. I never felt this way about anyone I'd ever met. I could feel the tears running down my cheeks. I tried to hide it from Alex. I didn't want him to feel as bad as I felt.

I started to remove my hand but he held on to it saying, "Me too."

After we landed we said very little. I think we were both hurting. I was I know especially as I saw him walk with his dad away from me.

I met Mom outside Customs & Immigration. We caught a cab to the hotel and didn't really speak to each other.
