Carters arrived and the final round of introductions were made. John made

jumped at the offer and soon were laughing and chatting together as they
put the different types of meat which had been bought for the BBQ on to
cook.

As different things were said or done Derwent and Susan would look at each
other and raise their eyebrows but they did not say anything. Bradley
picked up on this and he turned to John suggesting, "John, I think the meat
would taste a lot better if we marinated it with some beer. Okay if I get
one?" As he finished his question Bradley gave an impish grin which told
John exactly what was intended with the beer.

"Brad, you must think I was born yesterday. The meat has already had
whatever marinating and seasoning it needed." John replied smiling.

Bradley turned and looked at John for a few moments, "Nope, couldn't
possible have been born yesterday with those grey hairs."

Rose chuckled before John replied, "Grey hairs? What grey hairs? Or do you
mean the ones my son's friends give me."

Rose's chuckle developed into a full laugh and Colin looked at Bradley and
said, "You're going to have to get out of bed a lot earlier to get one over
John, son." And then laughed with Rose.

Susan looked shocked and actually grew a little pale; but still kept
quiet. Derwent likewise was a little shocked at this bit of conversation;
he also kept quiet but couldn't hide a grin from everyone as he turned away
from Susan to hide it from her.  Once everyone had finished eating Rose
suggested that the boys might like to go for a walk or something because
she wanted to get them away to allow the parents to have more of an
opportunity to talk without having to be careful about what they said.

"We could go to the park for a bit." Dominic suggested, "But we'll clean
everything up first. I don't want to have to do it later on.

Again, Susan and Derwent looked at each other. This time in surprise; they
would never have expected the teens to willingly offer to clean up. They
might have felt this was a bit beyond their capabilities as when the boys
were collecting up the dirty dishes Susan warned David to be careful and
not to carry too much at once or he might drop something. Alexander saw
David tense up and begin to blush and quickly moved over next to David. But
Rose got in quickly, "Oh don't let that worry you Susan. If something gets
dropped we can just pick it up and clean up any mess. I'm sure David is
quite capable."

With the six boys all working at the cleaning up they got the job done
quickly and Callum offered to refresh the parents' drinks before they
left. They had not even got out of the driveway before David was venting

"Don't worry about it Dave. We know you're better than they seem to think
you are." Alexander tried to comfort him.

"But they made me look like a baby in front of all of your parents." David
complained.

"No. Our parents know you're not a baby. Remember you've been round ours
when your parents haven't been there and they've seen how good you are."
Callum said. "It's your parents that they'll be thinking the worse of, not
you."

"And they won't be there tonight for the sleepover either." Dominic added.

Being out at the park meant that the boys did not hear any of the
conversation the adults had and so, on their return, were not aware that
David's parents had expressed surprise at the way the other parents allowed
their children to speak to them. They later learned that John had countered
this with what he put out as fact that their freer relationship with their
sons meant that their sons talked to them about everything and there were
no secrets between them which allowed the parents to trust their boys
more. Bradley's father, Colin, quickly agreed with John and cited the
sleepover in the tent as a good example of how the boys had done everything
they had been asked to do. No one ended up in the Accident and Emergency
and no property got damaged. Also no neighbours complained either. Finally
Rose said, "Also we don't have to continually harangue our boys to get
their chores done. Did you notice we didn't even have to ask them to help
clean up? They just went ahead and did it because they knew it was a part
of the BBQ that needed to be done and they wanted to get it done sooner
rather than later."

"What surprised me most," Mary Carter said, "was that our boys just pitched
in and helped without having to be told to do so. They really are all good
friends and know what's expected of them."

The subject of the conversation changed when the parents heard the boys
returning. The boys took folding chairs and moved over to where the tent
had been erected for their sleepover and sat in a circle to continue the
conversation they had been having as they walked back from the park.  Both
groups talked in low voices so while the other group could hear sound they
could not discern what was being said unless someone raised their voice a
bit. Unfortunately, this was the undoing of the party when suddenly David
blurted out in a loud voice, "You both agreed not to do anal; why?"

Susan's mouth flew open in shock and then turning to face the group of
boys, ordered, "David McAllister, you come here this instant!"

"You haven't answered my questions and you know how much worse it will be

they were spoken to." Susan demanded.

"I can't tell you their names. All I can tell you is that they have agreed

"Are you telling me that some of your friends are homosexuals?" Susan asked
sternly.

"Maybe." David said and looked over at the boys, who all sat in stunned
silence, and mouthed sorry to them.

Bradley stood up and walked over to the adult group. "Yes, Mrs. McAllister,
I am gay and I'm not ashamed to admit it. And I'm the one who has said I
will not do anal with my boyfriend. We're keeping that until we get
married."

Alexander stood up but Callum stood and grabbed him preventing him from
walking over to join Bradley. Ben and Dominic also stood up and the four of
them looked on not knowing quite what to do.

"Married! I've never heard such disgusting talk in my life. Do you know
this about your son?" Susan glared at Angela and Colin.

Colin stood up and moved over to stand beside Bradley. Putting his arm
around Bradley's shoulders he said, "Yes we know. Bradley is a good son and
tells us the truth because he knows he will receive our love and support. I
am very proud of him and we love his boyfriend too."

"And I suppose one of you perverted lot down there is the boyfriend." Susan
spat out with drops of spittle flying from her mouth. Then she turned to
her husband and said, "Come on Derwent, we can't stay here a moment
longer. David go and get your things, there is no way we can let you stay
with these tools of Satan."

"But mum, there's nothing wrong with these guys. They're all good guys who
won't hurt me." David said.

"Nothing wrong! Nothing wrong! No there's everything wrong with them and
their families for accepting it. Now go and get your stuff immediately."
Susan said.

"Now just hold on a moment." John said. "You may be entitled to have your
own opinion about homosexuality, but you have no grounds for labelling
others with your opinion. Yes, our children are gay, but they are well
behaved and honest children. They are polite and willing to take on
responsibilities that most teenagers run away from. Look at how surprising
it was that without being asked they all set about cleaning up after the
BBQ. How many other teenage boys would do that? I think you owe them an
apology for what you said to them."

"Apologise? For what? For speaking the truth? Never!" Susan said
emphasising the last word.

"Homosexuality is legal in this country of ours. Therefore to label it as
perverted cannot be the truth and to suggest that because one of the group
has admitted to being gay makes all of them perverts is utterly wrong and
defamatory. Or maybe you would like to explain your reasoning to a judge?"
Colin said, backing up John's words.

Derwent McAllister put his hand on Susan's arm and said, "Susan, I think
you need to calm down a bit." Then turning to the others he continued, "I'm
sorry for this but I think we had better go." He used the hand that was
holding his wife's arm to guide her to turn and then he began to lead her
back into the house to get to the front door.

As soon as she had her back to the group of boys Alexander broke from his
brother's arms and went running up to throw his arms around Bradley and hug
him. Bradley lowered his head and whispered, "Go and help David."

Reluctantly Alexander moved into the house and found David sitting on his
sleeping bag in the lounge in floods of tears. Alexander put his arms
around David and hugged him. "It's okay Davey, it's not your fault."

"I ... I'm ... I'm so sorry ..." David sobbed.

"Don't worry, we'll talk about it later when things have got quieter."
Alexander said.

"Get your filthy hands off my son you child of the devil!" Susan shouted
and began marching up toward the two boys.

Derwent grabbed Susan's arms to stop her just as John stepped between her
and the pair comforting each other.

"One more accusation like that and you will be hearing from our
solicitors. I'm sorry you feel so strongly about this but it still does not
give you the right to speak to our sons in that way." John turned towards
David and Alexander and continued, "David, I'm sorry things have turned out
like this, but believe me when I tell you that we don't hold anything
against you at all. You will always be welcome in our home. Now I think I
had better help carry your things out as I don't know if I can trust your
mother not to hurt Alexander if she gets close enough to him."

David passed John his bag and picked up his sleeping bag. Then John put a
comforting hand on David's shoulder and gently guided him towards the
door. Rose opened the door and with tears in her eyes she bent down and
whispered in David's ear, "If you need help call us." Then she stood up
straight again and looking at both Derwent and Susan said, "I'm sorry you
feel like this, but please don't punish David for something he hasn't
done."

"I don't think you have any right to suggest to us how we deal with our
son. You don't seem to have been too successful with your brood of vipers."
Susan spat out.

"At least our brood of vipers know they are loved and are able to talk to
us about anything without fear of being punished for something that is not
their fault." Rose responded.

John, standing behind Derwent and Susan, quickly raised a finger to his
lips to ask Rose to keep quiet. Then he ushered the three McAllisters out
the door and followed behind with David's bag as they walked to their car.

John and Rose went back outside to the rest of the party and apologised for
the upset. They were assured by both the other two sets of parents they
were not to blame and that they all supported them.

"I have to admit that it has come as a bit of a shock to learn that both my
boys might be gay but they have our love and support just as you have given
your boys your love and support. We were having a good time before that
outburst and it would be a shame to let that spoil the whole evening. Boys
I'd appreciate it if you could all go back to your chatting over there as I
want to spend some time talking with your parents to see what we can do to
help support you and each other." George Carter said.

Bradley grabbed Alexander's hand and led the boys back to their chairs
while the parents all sat down except for John who offered to refresh
drinks first. He also called out to the boys suggesting they might want to
get some more drinks.

"I don't know how you feel about it, but I think after what they have just
gone through maybe something stronger than coke could be a help for the
boys. I am happy for Bradley to have a beer if you don't mind." Colin said.

John looked at George and Mary and got a nod of the head from both of them,
"If you guys would like to have a beer each we don't mind this time. But
only one each, okay." He called out to the boys. Callum and Dominic got up
a few moments later and moved over to the drinks table to collect and carry
back a beer for each of them.

"I hope you don't think this is prying, but how do you feel about your sons
being gay?" George asked.

"Bradley has made us very proud of him for a long time. We were sorry to
learn that we might never have any grandchildren, but we're not sorry he's
gay. And we're definitely not sorry he has chosen a very lovely boy to fall
in love with. Our love for him and Alexander has grown and keeps on growing
the more we have to do with them. Nothing will change that. Seeing Bradley
come forward and stand up to that vile woman made me so proud I just wanted
to jump up and hug him, while I spat in her face." Angela said.

"We have two wonderful children who have both turned out to be gay, or at
least bi. Before Callum was born we had talked about if any of our children
should turn out gay how would we react and we both were in agreement then
as we are now. We cannot change the love we have for them. They are as much
a part of us as we are of them and their behaviour compared with many teens
today is exemplary. Like Mary and Colin we're very proud of them and also
the friends they have chosen. We love your sons too and if they are gay,
straight or bi, it makes no difference to us. They are welcome in our home
and welcome to associate with our children." Rose said.

Mary then spoke up, "We couldn't help but notice the freedom your children
have to talk to you. I really liked the banter that they had which was at
times mischievous but never rude or cheeky. I would like us to have that
sort of relationship with Dominic and Ben. Can you tell us how to develop
it because I guess it will have to start with us?"

"Yes, watching that today was very eye opening, and then hearing how
because of it you have an open and honest relationship with your children,
which allowed you to know about their sexual preferences made me realise we
are probably missing out on so much with our two."

"I can't speak for Colin and Angela, but we did it by always taking time to
talk openly and honestly with our boys. They knew that they could come and
talk to us about anything and also that they would only get punished for
things they had knowingly done wrong. Yet, even so they were still
harbouring secrets about their sexuality from us and from each other. I
think though that this was because of seeing reactions like we witnessed
tonight." John added.

"I don't think we have achieved as much as Rose and John have with their
two, but we are working towards that as well with much the same
thing. Bradley knows he has our support and our love. He also knows that we
will listen to him and explain why we are taking the stance in a given
situation that we are. Since we began developing that openness and honesty
with him we have got to know him so much better and our love and our
respect for him has grown. He's got quite a mature head on his shoulders
and that bit about waiting till they are married is a part of that. Saving
something that you can only give once for the one you are going to spend
the rest of your life with is evidence of that."

"I would suggest that you get your two boys and sit down with them and tell
them this is what you want and while it will be difficult at first if all
four of you work at it then you can achieve it. I'm sure your boys will be
delighted. They've seen how we are and I know Dominic has mentioned he'd
like it." John told them.

"Thank you. You know, if you don't mind, I would like to make a little
start with that and ask the boys to join us and share in our conversations
now." George suggested.

"I have no problem with that." John agreed instantly. Rose smiled and gave
her consent and both Wrights also agreed that it would be a good thing.

George stood up and said, "I'd like to be the one to invite them." Without
waiting for the others assent he walked over to the five boys.  "Guys, Mary
and I have been very impressed with the relationship you other three have
with your parents and would very much like to have that same relationship
with our two young men. It's going to take some adjusting for all of us and
to help begin that we adults would all be honoured if you would please come
and join us for the rest of the evening and share with us and we with you."

Dominic looked at his dad with an expression that spelt disbelief. "No Dom,
honestly. Your mother and I are actually a bit jealous of the relationship
Al and Cal have with their parents and Brad has with his. If we had that we
would not have been as surprised as we were tonight. And don't worry, we
love both you boys more than we can tell and it will not bother us if you
are also gay. And maybe if we can work at it we will also find out what
happened to make the change in the way you and Ben are towards each
other. Please would you guys help an old man out and come and join with
us." George said.

"You see, out of the ashes the phoenix will rise." Bradley said looking at
Dom. "Come on guys, let's go and make an old man happy."

"Thank you Brad. And if you can help these two in any way to overcome their
misgivings about their parents we would be very grateful." George said.

The five boys stood up and picking up their chairs moved to join in with
the adults. As they were getting the chairs re-arranged to fit everybody
in, the doorbell rang and John went to answer it. Opening the door he was
confronted by two police officers.
