Chapter 3

Waking up beside Terry was the best. I was no longer confused about the things I was feeling towards him, and I couldn't imagine myself falling in love with any other person. What surprised me the most was how I had accepted the fact that I was gay so easily. While I didn't know that many people who were gay, I had heard a few stories about people coming out to loved ones or friends. Not many of those stories turned out so well. I never could have guessed that coming out to Terry would have resulted in him and I becoming boyfriends.

Sitting up and looking over at Terry as he continued to sleep, I began to think of how my parent's would react to the news that I was gay. My Uncle Tim was gay, and I knew that my parents didn't have any problems with his being gay. In fact, we attended his wedding a few years back. Despite all that, however, I knew that it would be an entirely different matter for them to learn that their only son was gay as well. Also, I thought about how far apart Terry and I lived from each other. Neither of us had our drivers licenses, which would make things very difficult for the both of us.

Terry began to stir, his eyes opening slowly. Gazing up at me, a smile beginning to form on his face.

"Good morning my love," I said softly to him, leaning down and giving him a brief kiss.

"Good morning, babe."

"You want to know something dude?" I asked.

"Sure."

"You have morning breath," I said, grinning widely.

"You do too," he said, both of us beginning to laugh lightly.

"I don't care though," I told him. "I love you, and everything about you."

"I love you too Simon." With that, he reached up and pulled me towards him, and gave me an even bigger, more loving kiss.

"We need to get up dude, I have to go to the bathroom bad!" I said, still being held in place by Terry.

"Me too. I just don't want to let you go. It's the last day we have to spend together for a while."

"I know. I don't want to think about that though, I want to enjoy today with you as much as I can," I said.

"So do I. Come on," he said, letting me stand up. "Lets get to the bathroom."

"I'm all for that," I laughed. "My bladder's so full it feels like it's going to burst!"

"Ooh, we can't have that," he said, getting to his feet. Terry and I both put our shoes on, and I opened the door to the tent, leading the way outside.

"Good morning sleepy heads," my father said as I Terry and I left our tent.

"Morning Dad," I sad, shielding my eyes from the morning sun.

"You two up for some breakfast?" he asked.

"Oh yeah!" both of us said at the same time.

"But first we need to visit the little boy's room," I told him.

My father laughed. "I bet you do. You two get going, and I'll get the fire started."

Leaving the campsite, Terry and I walked down the path leading to the bathrooms. Once we were out of my father's sight, I reached over took his hand in mine. If it wasn't for the fact that we both had to go to the bathroom so badly, we would have taken the time to enjoy the walk. Instead, we walked as fast as we could before either of us had an accident.

The bathroom appeared to be empty, which suited us just fine. Heading over to the urinals, we laughed and joked amongst ourselves as we let our bladders release their contents. I couldn't help but glance over at Terry, looking down and seeing him for the first time. While I had always discretely checked out the guys at the pool and in the locker room at school, noticing their bulging swimsuits and toned bodies in the showers, with Terry, I didn't have to hide my interest. I noticed also that I wasn't the only one letting my eyes wander. Looking up at Terry I saw that his attention was focused on me, his eyes taking in as much of me as they could.

"You're beautiful," I said, causing him to look up at me, blushing.

"Thanks, so are you."

"I love you Terry," I told him, leaning over to give him a kiss.

"I love you too Simon," he said, our lips meeting for a brief kiss. At that moment, the door to one of the stalls opened, and a man walked out, his face filled with disgust as he looked at Terry and me.

"God damn fagots!" the man yelled, storming out of the bathroom.

Terry and I finished, then went to the sinks to wash our hands. What that man said hurt me in ways I never knew possible. The more I thought about it, the more upset I became until I started to cry. Terry saw this, and put his arm around me.

"It's okay my love. He was just a hateful man who can't accept anything or anyone different than himself," Terry consoled me.

"I know babe," I said, sniffing and trying to wipe away my tears. "but what he said still hurt. I love you so much and I never want to lose you."

"You won't babe," he said, pulling me into a tight hug. "You'll never lose me. I'm going to love you forever." We stood there for a couple minutes, Terry allowing me the time to calm down. "Now let's get out of here before your dad thinks that we got lost or something," he said, once more showing me the cute smile of his.

We left the bathroom, Terry taking a hold of my hand. Together we walked back to the campsite and to our parents who were probably already eating breakfast by now. Nearing the campsite, Terry let go of my hand and I reluctantly dropped it to my side.

"Well there you two are!" my father exclaimed, serving some eggs and bacon onto David's plate, seeing us walking towards him. My mother, Kathy and Emily were already sitting at the picnic table, eating. "We were wondering what was taking you two so long."

"Just some rude guy in the bathroom we had to deal with is all," I told my father, trying to dismiss the whole incident as unimportant.

"Some guy in the bathroom was giving you problems? Was he your age or older?"

"Um, well, older," I said.

"Ok, what happened?" David demanded to know.

"Um well, Simon and I were going to the bathroom and we were joking around with each other and this guy comes out of one of the stalls and starts yelling at us then stormed out of the bathroom. He upset us quite a bit." Terry said.

"Oh honey," my mother said, rushing up to hug me.

"Mom!" I protested, trying to avoid being embarrassed in front of Terry. Of course I failed miserably, ending up wrapped in her arms. "I'm okay, really," I said.

"Son, I want you to be honest with me. Did it have anything to do with the fact that you and Terry are gay and are boyfriends?" my father asked me, making me gasp in shock.

"How... how did you know? I mean, Terry and I..." I stammered, suddenly afraid. All I could do was look at Terry, who had an identical look on his face.

"Simon, please don't be afraid," my dad said, approaching me. "Your mother and I have had this feeling about you for a while now. It doesn't change a thing about how we feel about you. We love you Simon. We always will. If being with Terry makes you happy, then that's all that's important to your mother and me," he said. With tears running down my face, I grabbed my father into a hug and cried lightly on his shoulder. His arms wrapped around me, and I could feel the warmth and love he had for me as he returned the hug.

"Terry, your mother and I have been worried about you for a while now. You used to spend so much time playing with your friends, but now you hardly spend any time with them. We have a pretty good idea now why that is. We just wished you could have come to us about this son," David told Terry.

"I was afraid Dad," Terry said, tears running down his face as well. "I didn't know how you or Mom could every accept the fact that I like guys."

"Then thats our fault Son," Kathy said, walking up to Terry. "We didn't do a good enough job to show you that no matter what, we will always love you, that we want you to be happy. Seeing you with Simon, and how happy you are with him is all your father and I could have hoped for."

"Thank you Mom," Terry said, putting his arms around her and hugging his mother close to him.

"Does that mean you and Simon are boyfriends and are like dating and stuff?" Emily asked, making everyone look at her.

"Yes it does, little sis," Terry told her, letting go of his mother.

"Way cool! Just wait till Jessica hears about this!"

"Emily!" Kathy admonished the girl. "I don't want you even thinking about telling anyone about Terry and Simon being boyfriends."

"But Mom," Emily tried.

"No buts, lady. Being gay and loving another guy is not something that everyone can understand, and they have to be careful about who they tell," Kathy said.

"But why Mom? If they love each other, why shouldn't people know?"

"Because some people think that it's wrong for two guys to love each other, or even two girls for that matter."

"Well that's stupid. They should be able to love whoever they want to," Emily said.

"I know sweetie," Kathy said, her voice softening a bit. "But that's just how it is, even here in Canada."

"Okay, now boys, what did the man yell out at you two?" my father asked.

"Well, he said 'God damn fagots' Dad." I told him.

"What did he look like?"

"I didn't get much of a good look at him as he was behind us when he yelled at us, but I know he had short blond hair, was taller than the both of us, and he looked a little over-weight."

"He almost looked like he was in the military," Terry said. "He was wearing a brown jacket and pants, and his hair was like really short, just like they are in the movies,"

"Oh, you mean like that man over there with the park ranger?" Emily asked, pointing towards the path where Terry and I had come from. Walking towards us beside a park ranger was the man that Terry and I encountered in the bathroom. I walked over to Terry and held onto his hand.

"That's the man Dad," I told my father. "He's the one that yelled at us in the bathroom."

"Don't worry Simon, we'll take care of this," he said, looking at David who nodded his head.

It didn't take long for the man and the park ranger to approach my father and David.

"Sir, this is Mr. Powell, and he has lodged a complaint against your sons."

"And what is it your are alleging our sons were supposed to have done?" my father demanded.

"They were performing an obscene act in the bathroom."

"Define obscene Mr. Powell," David demanded.

"They were having sex," Mr. Powell said.

"Sir, while we do not monitor or care what goes on in your tents in private so long as it's legal, these bathrooms are public areas and we cannot allow lewd behavior to disrupt the enjoyment of the park by other campers," the park ranger said.

"I don't care what this man has been telling you," David said shortly. "My son was not having sex with anyone."

"Shows what you know," Mr. Powell sneered. "I caught them in the middle of having sex. It was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen in my life. I pray for your son's souls sir. They were in the middle of a homosexual act which in the eyes of the lord is an abomination!"

"Don't you dare quote bible verses with me mister," my father yelled at the man. "My family has had enough of that kind of religious crap, and I will not stand here and allow you to accuse my son of being an abomination."

"Just who the hell do you think you are?" David demanded.

"I know what I saw, and if you condone what those two boys were doing then it's no wonder they became gay," Mr. Powell replied smugly pointing at Terry and I.

"We were not!" I yelled at him.

"Okay, I've had just about enough of this bull," my father said heatedly.

"Please, lets all calm down here," the park ranger said. "Now a complaint has been made and I am required to investigate it. I need to ask your sons some questions since the complaint is directed at them."

"What?!" Mr. Powell thundered. "You're going to listen to some fagot kids? What are you all, a bunch of fagot lovers? I demand that you remove them from the park immediately!"

"Sir if you don't shut the hell up right now, it will be you who is going to be leaving the park, do I make myself understood?" the park ranger shouted back. "In fact, I'm not even going to pursue this complaint any farther. I've got a fair idea of what this is all about, and I don't like it one bit. So I suggest you either return to your campsite and stay away from these people, or pack up your things and leave the park."

"Fine! This place is turning into a queer resort anyways." Mr Powell fumed, storming out of the campsite.

"I want to apologize on behalf of the park, but I do have to impress upon you the seriousness of the accusation. Sexual activities of any kind in public places isn't permitted."

"I can understand that officer," my father told the park ranger.

"Please, call me Darryl."

"Sir, we weren't having sex in the bathroom," I said, directing everyone's attention to me and Terry.

"What were you two doing then?" Darryl asked.

"We were just going to the bathroom." I said.

"Boys, if you're gay, it doesn't matter to me, but I need to know what happened in that bathroom."

"We kissed." Terry said, looking right at Darryl.

"You kissed. That's all?"

"Yes sir," I answered.

"I don't understand some people these days," Darryl said, shaking his head. "Look, what you did in there wasn't wrong. Never let anyone tell you that loving each other is wrong. But in a public place like this, you have to be careful about showing your affection for each other in public."

"It's not fair though," Terry said. "We love each other. People who aren't gay can do that in public, so why can't we?"

"You're right, it's not son," David said. "People fear what is different, what they don't understand. Unfortunately, it's human nature."

"Alright, I'm not going to hold you people up any longer," Darryl said. "Just remember what I said to you boys."

"We will sir," I said. My father and David shook Darryl's hand, and then he left our camp.

"Okay, now that that is over with, I think I'd better do something about getting you boys something to eat," my father said, picking up the frying pan that he had put off to the side when we were interrupted.

"Yeah, I'm starving!" Terry said.

"You're always starving babe," I joked. Just then my stomach decided to announce it's presence.

"And you're not?" Terry laughed.

"That's my boy," my father said. "The human vacuum."

"Dad!" I exclaimed in protest.

Breakfast went pretty smoothly from that point on. My father had to restart the fire as it had almost gone out. Terry, my father, and I managed to eat our breakfast while my mother, Kathy, Emily, and David started to get things packed up. Seeing them pack only helped remind me that this was the last day I would get to be with Terry for a while. Neither of us knew when we'd be able to see each other again. Shaking that thought out of my head, I focused instead on deciding what Terry and I could do while we were still together. And then it hit me.

"Hey dude!" I called to Terry, who after finishing breakfast, started to help his father pack up some of their gear. "You think you'd like to join me for a bit of swimming?" I asked him.

"Sure! I'd love to. I haven't had a chance all weekend yet," Terry said. Then he turned to his father. "Can I go with Simon, dad?" he asked.

"Yes you can son, just help me get this last bag packed and I'll take you and Simon to the beach."

"Oh, but dad, we can get to the beach by ourselves," Terry said.

"No son. Not when there's still a chance that you could run into that man on the way. I'd rather not risk it. He seemed a bit too eager for a confrontation, and I'd rather not risk you being caught alone."

"Okay Dad," Terry said reluctantly.

"Why don't we all go then?" my father suggested. "We can all get the rest of this packed up and into the cars, then we can all go to the beach for the rest of our time here."

"Hey, I'm all up for that," my mother said. "What do you think Kathy?"

"Sounds good to me," Kathy replied.

"Yay!" Emily shouted. "Swimming!"

"I take it swimming is Emily's favorite activity," my father laughed.

"Don't you know it! She's the best swimmer on the girls swim team at her school," David replied proudly.

"Simon's pretty good himself," my father said.

"Dad, I just like to swim is all," I said, blushing.

"You're still pretty good at it. In fact, I wasn't going to tell you this at all until after the weekend when we got back."

"What?" I asked, my interest suddenly shifting from swimming with Terry to what my father had to say.

"Remember a while back you sent in that application for a lifeguarding position at Nelson Park?"

"Yeah, I remember. But that was so long ago," I replied.

"Not too long ago, it has only been a couple months. Well anyways, before we left, we received a letter from Nelson. Looks like you've been accepted as their chief lifeguard for the rest of the summer."

"Oh my god, really!" I exclaimed. "That's so awesome!" There was a smile on my face that was a mile wide. This is the one thing that I've looked forward too most of all for the last couple years.

"That's great babe," Terry said. He was smiling, but I could tell something was bothering him."

"What's wrong, babe?" I asked. "Oh no! That means we won't have much of a chance to be together." I said, suddenly realizing what taking this position would mean.

Never before had I been so conflicted. On the one hand, I wanted this job, and on the other, I loved Terry so much that it hurt just to think of being without him. Looking into his face, I could tell that it was hurting him too.

"I'm sorry babe," I said to him. Noticing the single tear that ran down the side of his face, I gathered him into a hug, holding him as close to me as I could. Seeing him like this hurt very much, and knowing what I had to do, I made a decision. "I want this job very much babe," I said, stepping away from him slightly and looking into his tear streaked face. "But it means nothing to me if it means I can't be with you," I told him.

"No, I don't want you giving up something that you want to do babe."

"Hush, you're more important to me right now. I love you, and I can't even think of spending the rest of the summer without being able to see you," I said.

"Well, maybe you can do both," my father told me.

"What do you mean, Dad?" I asked.

"Your mother and I have invited Terry's family to spend next weekend with us. Terry's parents are thinking of moving to Burlington since it's where David will be working from soon. So he wants to look at some homes around our area. They've already sold their home in Kitchener.

"What?! You didn't tell me you guys were moving, babe!" I said.

"Yeah, we are," Terry said smiling. "Until now though, I didn't know where we would be moving to. It's going to be awesome to be near you, babe."

"You better believe it! But a whole week of not being able to see you! I'm going to miss you terribly."

"i know love, I'm going to miss you too."

"Well, we can't have that!" my mother said.

"What?" I asked, puzzled.

"Kathy, do you think it would be possible for Terry to stay with us until you're ready to move?" my mother asked.

"I don't see why not," Kathy said. "Most of our stuff is packed, including Terry's, so there's not much we need to do before the move."

"You know what," David said. "Why doesn't Terry drive home with you three. He can take his clothes with him so at least he'll have something to wear until we can bring down some of his things. However, we'll need him to help us when it's moving day."

"Awesome! Hey, if I'm not working at the pool that day, I can help you guys with the move," I said enthusiastically.

"Good idea son," my father said. "I think it's all set. Now, why don't we all get our things into the cars so we can do some swimming before we leave.

It took us another twenty minutes to take the tents down, and get them back into their bags. The rest of our gear was already piled up near where my parents had their tent. With seven of us all picking up as much as we could carry, we managed to take everything with us in one trip. When we got to the cars, which surprisingly enough were almost side by side, the seven of us removed our bathing suits and towels from our backpacks. Once everyone had everything they needed, we loaded the cars up, Terry putting his backpack as well as his sleeping bag in with our stuff. When we came up here, the car was packed as it was, but now with the addition of Terry's stuff, it took Terry, and me, as well as my father to cram it all in.

We took a more direct path to go to the beach than when Kathy, Emily, and my mother went swimming. This path avoided most of the campsites, some of which were already in the process of being taken down like we had. Thankfully, the path to the beach was mostly shaded by the trees, otherwise we would all have ended up with a sunburn before we even got to the water.

The beach itself was packed. By the time we had everything packed and loaded in the cars, it was already afternoon, and the temperature had risen to a scorching thirty five degrees Celsius. Since it was getting late, we didn't spend too much time in the water. Even in that short time however, Terry and I managed to enjoy ourselves a great deal. With David and my father staying close to us, we managed to swim and play around for a good hour and a half before our parents decided it was time to get going.

Getting changed back into our clothes in the change rooms, Terry and I made sure not to make eye contact with each other, although I did managed to get a few discrete peeks at him as he was getting his underwear back on.

Walking out of the change room, we joined the rest of our families and together made our way back to the cars. Since it was the last day here, and since we were already leaving, I took Terry's hand in mine and we walked all the way back to the cars in front of the others.

"You know something Craig?" I overheard David asking my father.

"No what's that David?"

"I think we're going to have a problem getting those two to let go of each other."

My father laughed. "Kind of reminds you what it was like to first fall in love doesn't it?"

"It does indeed," David replied.

Terry and I did get a few stares from people as we passed them, but no one said anything about us holding hands. I did notice this one man looking at us and winking as we passed each other.

Once we arrived at the parking lot, my father unlocked the doors to our car. Terry and I hugged his family goodbye before walking back to our car, then climbed inside. Since there was no shade in the parking lot, the interior was hotter than hell, or so it seemed to us. We both immediately rolled down our windows all the way, trying to catch as much of a breeze from outside as we could.

"Dad, it's hot in here!" I complained.

"I know son, but don't worry, once we get on the road it'll cool down," my father said, climbing into the driver's seat. My mother was walking back from saying goodbye to Terry's family. Starting the car, my father waited for my mother to get in the car, then backed it out of the parking spot, and drove towards the lot entrance. Terry's father was behind the wheel of their car, driving right behind us. Soon, we were on the highway, and heading for home. Terry was sitting beside me, holding my hand, and resting his head on my shoulder.

"I love you babe," I told him.

He lifted his head to look at me. "I love you too babe," he said, bringing his lips to mine, and giving me a very gentle, loving kiss. Then he lowered his head back down onto his shoulder.

For the next half hour, we drove in relative silence. Occasionally my mother would look back at us and smile. Before long she started to nod off as she usually did when we were making a long trip somewhere, and was soon sleeping soundly in the front seat. I could feel myself getting sleepy as well, and seeing that Terry was sleeping soundly, I allowed myself to surrender to slumber's gentle embrace, falling asleep with my beautiful boyfriend beside me.
