Chapter 1 A wave crashed over Jamie's head as he gave in to the rip tide pulling him into the ocean. He grasped for air and eventually didn't even care. The water rushing to claim him as it's own was relentless in it's efforts. Jamie just relaxed and slowly swam slowly parallel to the beach. The grip of the ocean slowly gave way as he got further and further from where he'd first gotten into the water. When the ocean had given up its fight for him Jamie slowly started swimming to shore. As his feet touched sand and his body rose higher and higher out of the water Jamie began to relax more and was able to finally start catching his breath. As soon as he made it onto dry land he heaved in and out, sun warmly striking his wet body as he lay in the hot sand. Jamie suddenly came back from his serenity and inner- mind as he heard a shriek. Slowly the voice of a girl became fairly audible. "Jamie! Jaaaaamie!" screeched the voice. Jamie squinted to look at the figure running toward him with sand flying behind it as it's feet dug into the white sand and kicked it high into the air as it ran quickly. "Jamie are you alright?" asked the girl as she peered down on him. "Yeah. Yeah...I'm fine.." Jamie exhaled loudly. "I'm fine now. Just breathless." The girl crossed her arms and rolled her eyes at him "Well damn if I the water can do it to you but I can't." Jamie laughed at her insult. "Shut your mouth and help me up here, Ericca." Jamie said. The girl giggled and reached down to help him to his feet. "Well if you didn't dye your hair so damn black people wouldn't have to think you had dandruff with all that sand in there." She said as she swiped large amounts of sand out of his hair. "That was one hell of a rip tide, man." Jamie stated , still breathing loudly. "That's why we don't go in the water when they put up the red flags, dummy." the girl stated grumpily. "They've only drilled that into our heads since we were three years old." "How the fuck did I know it would be that damn bad." he retorted "The damn red flag, fool!" she snapped. Jamie rolled his eyes but he knew all about the 5 different colors of flags, with Red being the second worst. "Well, it's over now, thank god." he said. "Now...I'm going home. I gotta get some sleep. I feel like shit now." He swatted sand off of his ass as he began to walk back up the beach. Ciely walked close to his side harping on how dangerous it was and how he needed to stop with all of his bone-headed "guy stunts". When he finally got to the back door of his house he walked in and turned to her. "Now, goodbye Ci-Ci." he waved at her and shut the door in her face. "Asshole" was all he heard as he walked away from the door. After his shower he tried to sleep but no matter how much his eyes burned and his body yearned for sleep he simply couldn't sleep. Of course this was normal for many 17 year olds. Sleep was not always top priority when there were other things to do in the world and he could thing of so many things he wanted to move around and do. Jamie stood from his bed and turned off his air conditioner, looking around his room for a pair of pajama bottoms. He found his favorite pair and slipped them on. He picked up his cell phone and called his best friend, Kamron, who answered groggily. "Good lord, is everyone asleep at 3 in the afternoon?" Jamie asked as he rolled his eyes. "Shut up, Simms." Kamron said on the other end of the phone. "Some of us haven't even been asleep 4 hours, thankyou." "Ah. Another all nighter I see." Jamie said with a know-it-all tone. "Yes, thankyou. Some of us actually go out and have fun during the summer. You just stay at the damn beach." Kamron said, defensively. "Chill kid. What are you guys doing tonight?" he asked. "Well, Ciely, Evan, Dillon and I are going to Club Azul tonight...why?" "Oh I just wondered." now Jamie was getting defensive. "Not like you'd come anyway." Kamron shot. "Well...i'm gonna go now. Things to do." Jamie said, trying to end the snappy conversation. "Whatever, dude. Talk later." Kamron's end of the line suddenly died and Jamie looked down at his cell phone, then slammed it shut. He rolled his eyes. He couldn't help his current social anxiety. These things don't just go away after your mother is raped. He shuddered at the remembrance of the event that occured more than a year ago. His mother had somehow managed to throw herself back into work and her social life, whilst Jamie still had a hard time being part of the human race. His mother had tried, his friends had tried. For some reason, the world just terrified him these days. It really was becoming a tired excuse in his mind but for some reason he couldn't move past it. Slowly, he made his way to the kitchen and grabbed a water from the refrigerator. He looked out the window of the back door and saw people playing on the beach, laughing and throwing sand on one another. Some were laying out, some walking along the beaches, some just slowly making their way into the water, which still had a cold sensation due to the early summer months. May never brought very warm water. It usually didn't get warm til around June or July. He looked at the calendar his mother had pinned on the wall and realized that it was already June 15. His summer was wasting away and all he'd done was lie on the beach, play on the internet, and watch soap operas. He sighed and walked out the back door. He realized he didn't resent the people relaxing on the beach as much as he'd found himself doing last summer. In fact, he was back to admiring the bodies of the locals, and the visible bodies of the tourists, who usually were much fairer skinned. He stepped off of his deck only to be overrun by someone. "What the fuck?!" Jamie jumped up from the sand, ready to attack. A dark, brown-haired boy stood and looked him over, blinking against the sunlight, and drawing back from the harsh words Jamie looked ready to spill out. "Sorry! I'm so so sorry! I didn't mean to run over you like that. I was just..." "Being a tourist..." Jamie butted in the boys apollogy. "Well, actually I live here...well, just moved here from Mississippi." the boy said. "Hmm. Well. You don't have an accent." Jamie said with interest. "Hah. That gets you murdered in the school I just moved from. Hey maybe we'll go to school together here. I'm a senior this year. You?" the boy grunted. "Oh dare I dream? I'm a senior too." Jamie retorted with high sarcasm. "Anyway, i mean... i'm just used to people moving here from that area. They don't call us the 'redneck riviera' for nothing." Jamie said, referring to his town on the Florida panhandle. "But most people come with such thick accents." "What an interesting turn from 'what the fuck?!'. Now we're discussing my lack of an accent." the boy smiled at Jamie. "Well i am not usually that bitchy. Bad day, i guess." Jamie looked him over. "Sorry, again. I was looking at the water and some people out there getting yanked by the rip tides and looked forward just in time for you to step off of the back step, there." "Yeah. I was looking at them too. Oh well. My bad. People know not to be in the water when the red flags are up." Jamie stated, forgetting his earlier transgressions. He pointed to the flag posted next to his deck. "Dude, that flag's black." the boy said. Jamie turned to look at it with wide-eyed disbelief. "What the hell. We're not even supposed to be in the water, then. Wonder what's up." "I don't know. I just saw them changing them a little while ago." "Gah. I usually keep up with weather well. Wonder if we've got something going on.." Jamie said, baffled. "I don't do weather, so no clue." the boy said. Jamie rolled his eyes. He picked up his cell phone out of the sand and text messaged a number that sent back a weather report. "Well, my cell phone says it's supposed to be sunny today and tomorrow. Guess there was just a storm off shore or something." "Must be." the boy said. "Well, I better go..." "Oh yeah. Watch your step, man." Jamie laughed. The boy held out his hand to shake Jamie's. "Well...there's the Mississippi in you." Jamie taunted. "I'm Brecken Vance. Friends call me Breck. Retarded I know, but it works." Jamie took his hand and shook it. His hands were very soft, Jamie had to admit. He raised his eyebrow. "Yeah. I'm Jamie Simms. Friends call me Jamie." Brecken looked at him as he laughed. "Sorry. I'm a smart-ass." "I gathered." Brecken said with a straight face. "Well...maybe I'll bump into ya later." "Oh ha ha. I bet." Jamie said. Brecken turned and walked off as Jamie rolled his eyes again. He turned grudgingly around and walked up to his house and went inside. He sat flipping through channels as his cell phone rang. "Hello?" he answered. "Hey J. It's mom." stated his mother's perky voice. "Oh hi mom." he said. "What's up?" "Nothing. It's just super boring at work. Thought I'd call and see if you had any plans for the night." "No mom. I'm not going out tonight." he said through gritted teeth. "Oh ok. Well, if you make any plans, just tell me and you can have some money. What are you doing?" she said, not skipping a beat of perkyness. "Just watching tv. You know they put up the black flags on the beach." "Wow. I wonder why." she said, feigning interest. "No clue." he said blandly, catching her fake tone. "Well, guess I'll talk to you later. A customer is walking in." she said. "Ok. Talk to you later." he shut his cell phone and sighed. His mom always called and he hated being checked on every 5 minutes. He was just glad she wasn't in one of her chatty moods. That bugged him even more. Not ten minutes later his cell phone began to blast out its ring tone again. He looked at the caller ID, which said "Mom". He rolled his eyes. "Hello again." he answered. "Jamie, turn it on the weather channel and watch it please. Someone said it looks like bad weather is on the way." Jamie flipped to the weather channel and traded the small pleasantries with his mother, then they ended their call. He watched as the anchor spat out warnings for 4 counties on the florida panhandle. Jamie looked as his county lit up with the red warning. "The four counties we placed under this warning are, as of now, where it seems the hurricane will make landfall in the next three days. The same area just devastated by a hurricane, is most likely going to be called to evacuate. No official order has been made but the Governor is asking residents to get prepared and tourists are asked to return home." the anchor stated, intensely. Jamie immediately sent his mother a text with the info. Jamie looked up at the ceiling of his living room which had just been replaced from a hurricane that had occurred months earlier, and had devastated the area. He knew it was going to be time to start boarding up soon. He just didn't know how he'd missed this hurricane news. They usually covered it so well. It was then that he realized how much he'd cut himself off from the world. An overwhelming sadness took over him at this realization. Jamie had just gotten off the phone with his panic-striken grandmother who'd called from her rural virginia home when his mother walked through the door. It was about 7:30 and she was visibly tired. "Who were you on the phone with?" she asked as she lay her purse on the kitchen table. "Well aren't we nosy?" Jamie joked. "It was gandma. She was trippin' about the hurricane, as usual." "Well, hun, it is a big deal, need I remind you that our house still has structural-" "damage and blah blah" jamie cut his mother off. She looked at his with exasperation. "I hate to have to go back up into Alabama but I guess we should go up to your dad's." she sighed at the thought. "Um. No. I'm not staying with Bob." he stated sternly. "Honey, we don't really have a choice." "I'm not staying with him." he said matter-of-factly. "We'll worry about that later. I'm going to bed. We've gotta be up early to start boarding windows." "Yay. The fun. I get so tired of this drill." "I know but it's part of it. We'll worry about leaving if they issue an evacuation order." she said as she disappeared down the hall and the light to her bedroom flicked on and, 5 minutes later, off. Jamie made his way to his bedroom where he started answering constant txt messages from friends. He eventually fell asleep and slept heavily. Jamie blinked his eyes open and heard commotion in every direction. He got out of bed and put his shirt over his head as he walked out the door. His house was abuzz with his mother's fellow co- workers and everyone was boarding up windows. He could hear car horns on the road outside his house. "What's going on?" he asked, still groggy. "They issued an evac. order an hour or so ago. Said people on the barrier islands needed to get out of their homes soon." said Jenna. Jamie looked at the normally preppy, up-beat co-worker of his mothers. The 24 year old was usually pretty level headed but she looked pretty disheveled at the moment. This was her first hurricane since she'd just moved down a few months prior. She threw her highlighted, brown locks into a ponytail and continued breathlessly, "Your mother said when you got out of bed that you needed to go to the beach and help Ciely with ushering the last few tourists off the island." Jamie sighed. He never did understand why tourists acted so retarded during these situations. There were always a few that lingered behind to take in time at the beach, not realizing that they were clotting the main bridge to get the residents to safety. He went to his room and slipped on some trunks then headed out the back door to the beach. There were more people than usual still sitting around. Not as many as usual, though. Maybe 20 people. He went over to a group of college aged kids and started calmly telling them about the situation and, like a trained pro, helped them gather their things and talked them into leaving town if they're just visiting. Jamie loathed this responsibility, but it was one his mother always sent him to do. He bumped into Ciely a small piece down the beach and she looked worn out. "Hey." she said. "I thought it'd take me four weeks to get this group of old tourists off the beach!" "What were they doing?" he asked, kinda shocked. Most people ran when they heard evacuation. Tourists didn't usually know how to act in an evacuation so they ran amock. "They were all about 50 or 60 and they were very stubborn. They were going on about how many of these things they'd been through. I told them after hours of debating that it was a Cat. 4 and they almost ran off the beach. If they'd let me talk for more than five seconds, they wouldn't have left all of their stuff behind." she laughed. "Damn tourists." he said coldly. She looked at him crossly. "Your mom is a tourist center manager. You wouldn't have as much money as you do, rich boy, if we didn't have them." "Shut up." he flipped her off. "Anyway...i don't see anyone left. Even the pier is desserted." "Wow. Wierd. I hate it. It's so eerie when we don't have a thousand people crawling around out here." "Yeah. It's like the place loses it's life. Wait, though...did you say it's category 4?" "Yeah. That was a couple hours ago. They said it could strengthen before it gets here." she looked at him nervously. "I don't know how much more we can take around here." "Damn. Well I better go make one more look around and then get back to my house and see if they need help." "ok. Bye then." she said. She looked at him one more time then ran off to look for more people. After another sweep of the beach Jamie went back to his house to find it pretty desolate. All the windows were boarded up and everyone was gone. It was creepy to Jamie but he went in to find a letter where his mother had told him she'd gone to get hurricane supplies. He hated when she got them. She always got enough bottled water and batteries for years. They still had batteries from the last hurricane. He went and got on his computer and typed up his day's events in his LiveJournal then went into the living room to put the television back onto the weather channel. It was showing the current path of the hurricane and it's land-fall area had not changed. Walton, Escambia, and Santa Rosa counties were lit up bright red on the screen. He didn't even realize he'd fallen asleep in front of the set when he head a gasp. "Oh my god!" He looked up at his mother. "What?" he asked. She was looking at the tv screen. He turned and looked at the screen which had an anchor who repeated that the storm was now a category five and was expected to make landfall in the same area as the previous hurricane. His eyes bugged out of his head. He looked at his cell phone where he had 14 text messages. He looked at them and all of them said either "Cat 5!" or "Oh my god!!" He turned off his phone and went to his bedroom as he heard his mother frantically moving around in the house. He unplugged his computer and got his laptop out of his closet. He went through the rest of the day going through his clothes and packing things. He went into the living room to find his mother asleep on the couch. He then looked at a clock on the wall and realized how late it was. He went into his bedroom and sat on the bed. Within minutes he'd drifted into another sleep. A deep one. He'd realize when he woke up that everything was about to be different. Very different.
