He looked over to the two story brick and glass building he was about to enter. Teen boys and girls streamed into all of the various doors looking as if they knew exactly where they needed to go, which Tanner was sure they did. He hefted his dark green pack pack onto his right shoulder, and with a sigh, began the trek to his new high school. Having just moved into town three days prior, Tanner did not know anyone. Last year, when he entered 9th grade, he had every expectation of graduating from that same school. It was amazing how much difference 12 months could make. Ten minutes later, Tanner found himself at his new locker memorizing the com. He had reported into the office and received his locker and class schedule. School had started the previous Thurs, but his mom and he hadn't arrived until Friday afternoon. After a couple of tries, Tanner popped open his locker and started to hang his backpack and stack his school supplies on the the top shelf. Unlike his old school, he didn't need to share the locker with anyone. Suddenly a voice boomed from down the hall, "Hey, Keith, what do we have here? Looks like we got ourselves a pudgy little piggy... Oink, oink, little piggy." The taunt was followed by a couple of raucous laughs. Tanner was short for a tenth grader, and not exactly thin. Barrel chested would be more accurate. He felt his face heat up at the insults, but decided to try and ignore the quips. Tanner hoped the guys would lose interest and walk on. Not unexpectedly, they didn't. The next thing Tanner knew, two tall blonde haired guys wearing t-shirts that looked like they were purposely a size too small to show off their arms and chest, stood on either side of his locker. Tanner felt himself about to tear up. *Fucking A*, he thought, *that's the last thing I need to do right now.* He thought of his dad and the advice he always gave Tanner. He could almost hear his Dad whispering to him now, "Be yourself, don't give a shit what others think, and give back like they give you." Taking a deep breathe, Tanner fought back the tears and turned around, like he had nothing better to do. With a smile, he said, "Hey guys, I'm flattered, but you're not my type, I prefer girls." And then walked away. Unfortunately, the result was closer to waving a red flag before bull than music to soothe the savage beast. Tanner hadn't taken two steps, when he felt a hand grab his arm and spin him around. "What did you say, little piggy? Did you just call me a fag?" Tanner started to get a little scared at the look of anger in jock boy's eyes. His new found confidence scattered like a snuffed out candle. Much to his chagrin, Tanner felt his eyes water up this time, and he didn't think he'd be able to stop it? At that moment, another voice called out, "KEITH! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" Jock boy, or Keith, as he appeared to be named, tore his gaze from Tanner to the direction of the voice, which started again. "Why don't you leave the poor kid alone, he new here. Is that how we welcome someone? I see you do this shit again, and I'll have coach bench your ass for the season. I don't care who's coming to scout you out." Keith let go of Tanner, giving him a slight push for the effort and walked off with jock boy #2. Tanner barely noticed. The voice was one that was familiar. It couldn't be... could it? He turned towards the voice as well and couldn't stop the grin that lit up his face. It was... Three months earlier.... Tanner smiled contentedly as the evening sun warmed his body. It was late enough in the day, that he shouldn't have to worry about burning. He could hear the rhythmic crash of the waves upon the shore. He was sitting on the top of a picnic table, using the bench as a footrest. He was wearing a loose fitting superman t-shirt with a pair of red board shorts. At that moment, the world faded away as Tanner lost himself in The Flash comic book he was reading. He'd been there for a while, having brought several issues of the comic book with him. A sudden thump next to him, brought Tanner back to reality. He turned his head and started a bit at the presences of another boy suddenly sitting next to him. The boy looked to be about his age. He had dark brown hair and light brown eyes. He sat a little taller than Tanner and sported a pair of running shorts and nothing else. Tanner's first thought was how he'd love to have a nice tight body like this stranger. His arms were showed some bulk, but not too much and his chest and abs were slightly chiseled. "Is that The Flash?" He asked with a winning smile. He peered over Tanner's arm. "Looks like it's from back in the 80s or 90s," he continued. The boy's question snapped Tanner out of his thoughts, which manly was wondering why this boy had suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and stuttered, "umm, yeah. These were my dad's. He recently gave me his collection." "Really? I'm a big superhero geek. I love The Flash and Green Lantern, not to mention JLA and Superman. I'm Bart, by the way, Bart Allen." Tanner laughed...hard. "Yeah, right... and I'm Hal Jordan." Tanner continued to laugh. It wasn't really that funny, but he hadn't laughed in quite a while and it seemed like a dam had burst and he could stop himself. The other boy got a quizzical look on his face. "What are you talking about?" Finally, Tanner got himself under control. "Oh come on.. You just told me you were a fan of the Flash. Bart Allen ... Impulse... Barry Allen's great, great, great nephew or something like that from the 26th century." Tanner could keep from giggling. The other boy -- Bart apparently -- broke into a grin and gave Tanner a playful slug on the shoulder. "Never made that connection before. It's bad enough how I got my name. My parents were big fans of the Simpsons." "No shit," Tanner quipped. "Does that mean you came about during one the episodes?" he continued with a sly grin. "Ooh, gross. That's my parents you're talking about. I like to pretend that they don't do that.... So, Hal, mind if I look at some of these comic books?" "Tanner, actually... Tanner Brennan. That's Irish, by the way, in case you haven't guessed by the hair and eyes. Here, you should start with this one." Tanner handed Bart the oldest on, and the two boys both got lost in another universe about the adventures of the fastest man alive. Present day .... He turned towards the voice as well and couldn't stop the grin that lit up his face. It was... Bart. *Damn*, Tanner thought, of all the towns for them to move to, it was the one where Bart lived. Over the summer, they had never talked about where they lived, at least not by name, or even state. They had both had secrets they hadn't wanted to dwell on. "Well if it ain't Moses, in the flesh," Bart said, walking up to him with a smile. Tanner felt his face grow red, thinking about why Bart had given him that name. "Welcome to Green River, hos. Shit, it good to see you." Bart continued moving towards Tanner and embraced him in a hug. It wasn't simply a "bro hug", but one of the deep friendship they had formed over the summer. A tension Tanner hadn't realized he had melted away. His mom's favorite movie was Grease, and he'd watched it enough to know summer friendships didn't always survive school cliques. "Bart, you going to introduce us?" Bart had been walking down the hall with two other guys; one a bit taller them him and thin as a bean stalk with sandy blonde hair and freckles, the other shorter hispanic who sporting shoulder length hair and a stud earring in one ear. "Sure, Tim and Kevin, this here is Tanner, the guy I hung with this summer at my uncle's. Tanner, this is Tim," he pointed to the hispanic boy, "and Kevin," the beanpole. The three boys exchanged greetings and fist bumps before Tim asked, "Why's he calling you Moses? You religious or something? " Tanner felt himself blush some, not sure how to answer. There was no way he'd tell the true reason, and he sure as hell hoped Bart wasn't going to. Bart raised his hand to his mouth, like he was about to share a secret to Tim and Kevin. In a slightly lowered voice, but one obviously meant for Tanner to also hear, he quipped, "Not sure if you've noticed, but Tanner boy here is slightly bigger than your average teen." Once, Tanner would have been bothered by someone saying that, but Bart had helped him overcome some of his low confidence. Instead, he smirked a bit and waited to hear what Bart would come up with. "Well," he continued," this one time we went swimming in one of the pools. Tanner here tries to do some type of impressive dive, which he completely botches. He comes off the diving board and ends up doing this 10 point, perfect .... belly flop. It sounded like a shot gun went off.. Anyway, I swear, the water split right down the middle as two waves moved towards the pool sides. Just like Moses crossing the Red Sea." "Holy Fuck! No way!" exclaimed the guys appreciatively. Tanner just grinned. It was a nice story, but definitely not the reason for his nick name. That, Tanner was glad, would remain their secret... hopefully for ever. Just then the bell rang. Tanner had been holding his schedule in his left hand, which Bart quickly grabbed and perused. "Sweet," he said, "we have first lunch together. We sit at a table in the quad. Find me, if I don't find you. Damn, Tanner, you showing up here just made my whole year." Bart and Tim retreated to head off to home room. Kevin remained behind. "I saw we have homeroom together. Let me show you the way. It's over here." Kevin started walking in the opposite direction of Bart, and Tanner quickly followed. More to come.... Comments welcome at michcherry94@gmail.com
