The showdown between Shawn, Matt, and Kirk happened earlier. Shawn is at home, and not spending the night in Matt's hospital room because Matt's surgery is scheduled for the following morning. Matt calls Shawn at home to check on him. It's approx. 9:00 p.m.] I hadn't stopped worrying. I thought I'd call Shawn at home and see how he was doing. It was important to me that Shawn be the one to answer the phone. He was. "Hi Shawn! How are ya?" "Well, um," Shawn said tearfully, "We um, I mean I--" "Shawn, what's wrong?" "Kirk ran away. We can't find him!" ______ "Oh, God, no! How do you know he ran away?" "He left a note." Shawn's voice quivered. "Shit. Did you see him leave?" Tears formed in my eyes and I managed not to let on I was crying. "No, I saw the note when I got home." "What did it say?" "It said, 'I'm starting a new life. Don't worry about me.'" "Did you call the police?" "Yeah. Mom did. They said they don't have enough manpower to do a search until he's missing longer. But, because he's 17--" Shawn continued to get more upset. "I've heard that shit. Hang up. I'll call you right back. And don't worry!" I called my dad and told him about Kirk. He was very concerned. He said he would call some friends in the police department who would get a search going. I called Shawn again. "My dad said he'd call some friends who'll get a search going right away." "I wish I could be with you," Shawn said, crying. "Easy baby, it'll be all right. Kirk's smart. He's an honor student. He won't do anything stupid." "Yeah." "Why do you think he did it?" Shawn paused before answering. "I don't know. I think he was mad at me. I'm not sure." "Okay, baby. Just be calm okay?" "Yeah." "Did he take clothes with him?" "I can't tell." "You checked his closet?" "Yeah." "Okay. Then if he did, it wasn't much," I said, my mind swirling. "Why didn't you guys call my parents?" "I don't know." "Shawn--think a minute. Did anything happen at school, at home, or--" "I don't know. I just know I love you!" Shawn's cries deepened. "Shawn--look, we gotta pull ourselves together." "I know." "God, baby! Just be calm. Dad will make sure they find him." Shawn and I talked for about an hour. We were both tired and said our good-byes. I thought about Kirk. I prayed he would be okay, and that whatever the reason, things would work out real quick, so he could go back home and let things get back to normal. I hoped that Kirk didn't do this because of me or Shawn. I wanted it to be for another reason, but I couldn't think of any. Maybe something happened at school, but I knew Kirk wouldn't go around telling the other guys about me and Shawn. I realized that Charlie, the snack cart guy, never came. I was feeling hungry when it hit me that my surgery was in the morning. Then I remembered--about the stomach and bladder being empty. And what would it be like to give a semen sample? I hoped the doctor was right and it would be totally private. Every night, a nurse came around with a sleeping pill, and I always refused it. Tonight I took it. I think it still took me an hour to fall asleep, worrying the whole time. ._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._. I woke up at six a.m. holding my pillow. I was never so groggy in my life. Then I remembered it was time for my surgery and started getting nervous. A nice older guy came in and explained very calmly about the semen sample. "You can go in your bathroom. Just catch as much as you can and put the lid on tight afterward. I'll leave the room and be back in fifteen minutes." "Okay," I said. The guy left. Fifteen minutes? Hell, five minutes would be plenty. But it wasn't. It was one thing to jack off, but way different when someone says you HAVE to do it, and when a hospital person was waiting for your cum. I kept feeling like big brother was watching. I think it took me five minutes, just to get hard. I thought about Shawn and loosening him up real good, and shoving my dick up him as far as I could. I thought about him teasing Matt Junior before we did that, and all the licking he would do to my cock. When I thought about him shooting his hot stuff on my face, I came. My first shot hit the wall, then I bent over and caught most of the rest in the cup thing they gave me. I sealed it good, wiped myself off, and went back to bed. At least you couldn't see through the thing and tell what was inside. I was glad that was over. Strange, all of a sudden I realized I didn't like just sitting in bed, so I took the nearest chair. "Sorry, Matthew," a new nurse said, walking in quickly, "you'll have to stay in bed. They'll be coming for you soon." Shit. It sounded like a death warrant. They were coming for me to put me to sleep, like some animal. Would I wake up? Would something go wrong? The nurse set up an I.V. and I winced as she put the needle in. Damn! This gets scarier and scarier. The nurse went on and on about things. I heard my parents outside the door. I guessed they were told to stay out till the nurse was finished with me. "Don't move your arm more than you have to, and never bend your elbow more than this," the nurse said, demonstrating. "What stuff are you giving me?" "Just the usual things your surgeon ordered--something to prevent vomiting and defecation, a vasal constrictor, a little pthallin hydrochloride, and some Ringer's lactate." Oh, yeah, exactly what I thought they'd give me. "Um, okay, thanks." "Turn around, I have to give you a shot." DAMN! What's with these people?!! Wasn't the IV good enough?" "OW!" "I know, honey, it stings a little. Someone will give you your next shot in thirty minutes. We told your parents not to return until four o'clock because you'll be asleep till then." The nurse left. Another shot? Were they needle-happy around here? No wonder I was gonna be out until four this afternoon. What a way to start a day! My parents came in and we talked, and mom wrung her hands until THEY came to get me. When the guys with the gurney arrived, I swallowed hard. ._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._. I woke up feeling like I'd been shot naked into outer space and fell back to earth. I was disappointed that I remembered nothing about my surgery, except before they started, looking up at the doctors and someone saying that the anesthesia was getting ready to kick in. I put my hand to my face and felt this thing on my chin and jaw. The thing really felt weird, and didn't allow me to open my mouth all the way. It hurt to try. I guess I wouldn't be giving Shawn a blow job any time soon. My mouth was dry as hell, and I felt very groggy. I reached for some water, but I couldn't stretch far enough to get it. It was 2:30 p.m. I felt good that I'd beat the four o'clock deadline by an hour and a half. I forgot about the water. The room seemed a little dim, and I felt sleepy, but I was anxious to stay awake. Looking around as best I could without hurting something, I saw tons of equipment around me. I wondered if that was good or bad. I thought about Shawn. Then I thought about Kirk and what was happening with him. I was anxious to find out how the operation went, and what the doctor thought. Everything just mixed around in my head, which also hurt. I needed to get my mind off my troubles and my pain. Where was the damn pain shot when I wanted it? I usually ignored the newspaper, but they still gave me one every day. I thought reading would help me wake up. Luckily, I could reach it. As I opened it, the headline stood out to me. 17-YEAR-OLD KILLED IN TRAGIC LATE-NIGHT CRASH Honor student had great potential, friends, parents said. I think my heart stopped. My arm let go, and the paper fell to my lap. Oh, please, God, don't let this be true! I finally got the courage to read on. A freak accident last night claimed the life of Nathaniel Dulixxanquer, 17, of Majarna Hills . . . I was already so upset, I cried, thinking it was Kirk. How could I cry, knowing it wasn't him? I really sobbed. Before I knew it, two nurses came rushing in, like it was the end of the world. "Mr. Andikker! Are you all right?" Apparently I was being watched by way of the evil gadgets they had attached to me, and my crying must have set off the alarm. Now I was scared. While the nurses took my vital signs, a doctor came in who looked like he'd slept in his outfit. "Matthew, tell me what happened," the doctor said. "Nothing, really, I just read in the paper about an accident, and I thought it was my friend." The doctor read my chart. The nurses reported my vital signs. "Nurse," the doctor said, "One amp bicarb and 2cc thuriline nitrate, I.V. tube." "He's a 510, first day post-surgery, doctor." "Damn. Call the surgeon and see what he says. I'll be back," the doc said, his beeper going off. The sound hurt my ears. "Page me if you don't hear from him in five minutes. He's stable enough for now," the doc said, talking a million miles an hour. "What's a 510?" I asked, as the doc rushed out the door. "It's just a code for your status--that you had bone-related surgery," the nurse said crisply. "My lucky number, huh?" The nurses laughed. "It's a good number. You did just fine," one of the nurses said. "How did my surgery go?" "Your surgeon, Doctor Smith, will be in later to tell you all about it." 'Bureaucracies, bureaucracies!' I thought. "What if I'm gonna die? Shouldn't you tell me and let me die happy if it went well?" "A real comedian, this one," the one nurse said, smiling. Suddenly the same doctor popped his head in the doorway. "I ran into Dr. Smith in the hall. Go ahead with the thuriline. Skip the bicarb." "Yes doctor." Then one nurse ran out and returned with a bottle and a needle. I winced. I really felt relieved when she shot the stuff into the I.V. thing, and not me. "My lucky day, huh?" "For now, honey." Then they wrote some things down, and left. Damn. I'd forgotten to ask them to hand me the water. Oh, well, at least I was alive. I did my best to stretch to get to the water. "OW!" "I'll get that." I knew that voice, somehow, through the fog. Shawn! It was Shawn! "Hey baby," I said. "OW!" Once again it was painful to move my jaw. I wondered if they made things better or worse. My speech was as blurred as my head. "Any news from Kirk?" "No, nuthin," Shawn said, his mood deflating. "I'm sorry, baby. Are you okay?" "Yeah. It's you I'm worried about," Shawn said, rubbing my leg. "I love that smile, baby." It was very hard to talk. "Here," Shawn said, handing me the water, and kissing my arm. "They let me in early, but no one's supposed to be in here until four." "Some kiss!" I said jokingly, starting to choke on the water. Shawn grabbed the cup I was drinking from. "No, Matt!" The pain from coughing was the worst I could imagine. I felt like I was dying, half-awake and hurting all over. I knew I was scaring Shawn. "Sorry, baby." "Be careful, Matt, okay? I talked to the nurses," Shawn said quietly. "They told me all the things you shouldn't do--like reach out too far, cough, or laugh. You can't get out of bed either." "Sure I can," I said in my slurred speech, "Watch me." I pretended to pull the sheet back. "No! God, no, Matt!" "Just kiddin' baby! Geez! I feel like I'm dying." "You couldn't die if you wanted to, Matt, with all these machines you got here. What IS all this stuff?" Shawn was being light- hearted and I loved him for it. "It's the aliens getting ready to take me to the mother ship." Shawn giggled. "Only if I get to go with you." "Okay. Well, one's an I.V. That thing is probably the monitor for my heart and breathing. I don't know about the other stuff." "You don't look so good," Shawn said, trying to be brave, but his fear showing through. "That's funny, I feel really great." "Yeah, right!" Shawn said, his smile returning. The phone rang. "Go ahead, answer it," I said to Shawn. Shawn stood there with the phone in his hand, and just said, 'great,' 'yes,' 'no,' and 'okay' a few times and hung up. He was really smiling, though. "What was that about?" I said. "It was my mom. It's a secret." Shawn's face looked doubtful for a moment, then he cheered up again. "Come on, Shawn--no secrets, remember?" "It's a surprise!" "So? You won't tell me?" "Well," Shawn said, thinking up something, I supposed, "I can't spoil the surprise for my mom." He had me, there. "Okay. I guess you're off the hook." "Can I hug you?" "Yeah--just be careful you don't press on my jaw." Shawn went to the other side of my face to avoid my jaw and the whole mess. "Mmmm," Shawn said. I could feel his smile on my cheek. "Oh, yeah! Feels great!" Matt junior was agreeing with me. At least whatever they did to me, they didn't mess THAT up. We talked for about ten minutes. After that, Shawn started getting down about Kirk. "He'll be ok, baby." "Yeah." Shawn still looked down. While I was thinking of things to say to cheer up Shawn, we heard talking getting louder outside my door. I recognized my mom's voice. "There he is!" mom said, stating the obvious as usual. I loved both my parents very much. "Here I am." "Hi son." dad said in his usual calmness. I guess I love mom for her unique type of love, and dad for his rock steady approach. Mom was usually calm, too, but not when I was hurt. "Hey," I said, the most that I wanted to say, instead of saying, 'hello mom,' 'hello dad.' I sounded like I was talking through a pillow. Mom and dad both said hello to Shawn. "How'd it go?" mom asked. "I don't know I wasn't there," I said. Everyone laughed. I blushed. "I mean, I was asleep through the whole thing." Shawn nudged me, laughing. "Hey, it's the drugs, what can I say?" "Yes, dear," mom said, "you still have some of the anesthesia in you. I know that from my gall bladder surgery." "Did the doctor come in to see you?" dad asked. "No, not that I know of." "Did you guys hear anything about Kirk?" I asked. Dad spoke up. "Nothing much, son. I've been away from the phone, so I haven't heard the latest." "Okay," I said, noticing Shawn listening and perking up. "Last night they were searching for his car quite intensely." "Okay. Cool." That reminded me of the newspaper headline, which I wanted to forget. "Where's Shawn's parents?" I asked mom. "Oh, well, I'm not sure, Matty. They should be coming. I'm sure they wouldn't miss this, and they ARE concerned about you." I noticed Shawn blushed a little. "Yeah, well that's good." I think mom was the only person on earth that called me Matty. That always embarrassed me when she said it with other people around. Shawn's parents walked in, right on cue. "Hi, Cathy, Tom," mom and dad said. "Hi, mom," Shawn said. "Hello, Mr. Samuels, Mrs. Samuels." Then I heard more footsteps and talking. Two guys were rolling in a gurney, with a nurse leading the way. "Looks like you're getting a roommate," the nurse said, while a gurney entered the room. The guys pushing it were cute. "Just make some room, here," the nurse said to everyone else. 'Oh, no' I thought, 'that's all I need is some old geezer who coughs all night.' "He's out for now," one of the guys pushing the gurney said, "but he'll wake up soon." "They said this was the room he should go to," the nurse said, sounding puzzled, confirming my suspicion that this wasn't someone my age. I was already bummed. I wondered why everyone was looking so intently at my roommate. I prayed that he didn't have some horrible, ugly wound or something. Then I got a good look at him.
