David's Story By b-boy1 Chapter 11 I left Mr.Welsh's wake with a lot to think about. I didn't see Brad or Aaron for a few days afterward. Dad had come back to town, and we spent time together. I didn't realise how much I missed him, till I met him at the airport. My dad was surprised that I reacted the way I did. I ran up to him as soon as he got off the plane. I hugged him and held on tight. I was so relieved that he got home ok. I guess after all the events with Aaron, I was a little on edge about him. I was just so happy that he was home safe. We spent a few days just hanging out together. I called Brad sunday night to talk to him. Brad: "Hello" Me: "Brad?" "Nice to know you're still alive" he said sarcastically "I'm sorry I didn't call. I needed to spend some time with dad." "And that gave you the right to ingnore me. I thought we meant more to each other than that" "That's pretty low Brad. After what happened, I figured you would understand." "I do understand. I understand that you ditched me for the weekend without calling me to let me know why." "I'm sorry I didn't call, but I'm not going to argue with you over the phone. If you want to talk, come over and do it face to face." "Are you sure you'll have time for me." "It's pretty obvious you don't wat to be an adult about this. When you decide to talk, I'm right here. I love you." "Now that is playing dirty Dave. You had to go and play the love card." "Good night Brad. I'm going to do some laps then go to bed. If you want to finish this, I'm going to be out back." "But....." "Bye Brad." I hung up and got changed into my speedo. I got maybe 10 laps before I heard the gate open. I just kept up my workout. I got out of the pool to have a towell handed to me. I dried off and saw Brad standing there. He looked kind of shepish standing there. He let out a nervous smile, and sat down in a lounge chair next to me. We just kind of stared at each other for a few minutes. Neither of us wanting to speak first. Brad finally broke the silence. He said, "I did the same thing you know." I said, "What's that?" "I spent the entire weekend with my dad. When we got home from the wake, I wouldn't let him out of my sight. I fell asleep curled up next to him on the couch in front of the TV. He tried to get up in the middle of the night and go to bed. I just held on for dear life. I didn't want him to leave me alone." "Brad...." "No. Let me finish. I started to cry when he got up to go to bed. I thought if he went to bed, I wouldn't see him again. He sat back down, and held me till I stopped crying. We talked, I mean really talked, for the first time in a long time. I hadn't realised how much we missed of our lives. It was just the little stuff like what we thought about life, and what it means to us from day to day. I never thought my dad was so deep. I just thought of him as a person who gets on my back when I forget to take out the trash. When Aaron's dad died, It changed things for me. I realised just how much I still needed him." "Would you be surprised if I told you we did the exact same thing. When dad's plane finally landed, I ran up to him and hugged him. I cried like a baby because I was so glad he was home and safe. We spent the weekend just hanging out. We even found some time to talk." "Did you tell him?" "No. I wanted to, but it was so perfect, I didn't want to spoil it. I think he knows though." "Oh" "I'm sorry. I'm just not ready yet. I have an awful lot to lose if it goes badly." "I'm not rushing you. He's all you have left. I'd be scared too." I looked at him and sighed. We spent the weekend doing the exact same thing. I still didn't understand why he was upset. I said, "You still haven't told me why you were upset when I didn't call." "I don't know. I guess I forgot to call too. I'm sorry I was a jerk. I missed you, and I really needed my boyfriend." "So, are we ok?" "Yeah." "I'm sorry I hung up on you. I just don't like arguing with anyone over the phone. It's too easy to say things that hurt the other." "I'm glad you did though. It gives me a chance to do this.." Brad caressed my cheek then kissed me. It was soft and gentle. I pulled him close and hugged him. We just sat there holding each other, enjoying the moment. Brad took my hand and said, "We should probably go to your room. I don't want for you to have to get caught." I said, "I guess you're right." When we got upstairs, we stopped in the middle of my room. We kissed right there. We slowly undressed each other, taking time to enjoy the sensation of the physical contact. When we were all finished undressing, we got into bed. We laid on our sides facing each other. We spent the rest of the night talking like we did the first time we made love. Brad and I fell asleep holding each other. We woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I nudged Brad to wake him up. Brad rubbed my back and said "Good morning beautiful. Can I wake up like this every morning?" I said, "Only if I can too." We kissed and then got up to get dressed. Dad was still there so we had to shower seperately. I would have liked to though. I seroiusly doubt we would have mad it to school if we did. We went down to breakfast, and dad seemed surprised to see Brad. He said, "Brad, I didn't know you stayed over. What time did you get here?" Brad was really smooth in his answer. "I came over to work out with Dave. I got really tired, so I figuredI'd just stay the night so I could wake up on time. I have a habit of sleeping in after night workouts." Dad said, "Oh. I guess it makes sense. Uh..do you think Aaron is going to school today?" I said, I'm not sure, Why?" "I was thinking about taking him out to lunch or something today. I was thinking it might help." "If he goes to school today, I'll call you. You can just pick him up there." "I lost my father when I was his age. I thought taht maybe he could benefit from what I learned. I cried a lot, but I learned a few things as well." "I think that would be a good thing for him." I gave dad a hug and left for school. Brad and I parted at the front entrance and on to our homerooms. I didn't see Aaron, but I figured as much. I certainly wouldn't be able to come back this soon. School was pretty boring today. I had my first swim tryout today. Brad was there too. It was pretty hard not to stare in the locker room. I just kept looking at the floor. I got out to the pool, and the coach wanted to run it like a time trial. The best times got on the team. The swim coach said a few words then we started racing. The best time over 10 laps got in. Just before my turn, the coach stopped me. He said, "If you are as good as they say you are, I want you to make them all look terrible. I'm comming into this, holding you to a much higer standard. Do well, and you might just find yourself on the JV team." I gave him a nod, and took my mark. I looked around to find most of them looking nervously at the pool. The kid I was supposed to swim against didn't know how to dive from the starting point. He said, "How the heck am I supposed to dive form there? I'll split my head open" The coach was about to just dismiss him, but I stopped him before he could say anything. I looked at the kid. He was about 110, soaking wet. I said, "I'll tell ya what kid. Get in the pool however you want and I'll join you when you get half a length. Sound fair to you?" He nodded and got into the pool. I smiled at the coach and Brad, who was laughing his ass off. I let the kid ge half way before I took my mark. I dove in and swam under water for the first lap, and half of the next. I looked to my side to see myself pass him twice. I suraced and took long powerful strokes. I didn't stop or look for him till I finished all 10 laps. I got out of the pool and walked over to my towell and water bottle. I wiped my face and took a drink. It was kind of quiet when I got out. I looked back to the benches to see why. They were all looking at the clock. The only thing I heard was the sound of a swimmer in the water. I walked over to where Brad was sitting and sat down. He turned to look at me and back to the clock. I looked at he clock and couldn't believe what I saw. I made close to olympic trial time. I looked over at the coach. He was staring at me. I kind of blushed at the attention. I looked over at Brad again. I said, "I hope I make it onto the team. I was kind of having an off day. I think my time could have been better." He sat there looking at me like I was nuts. I just smiled and got up to go back over to my water bottle. I sat down and closed my eyes for a while relaxing till about half way through the trials. I heard a yell, and saw someone in the pool going down. It looked like he cramped up. I dropped my water, and dove in after him. I reached him as he was going to the bottom. I pulled him back up and swam back to the side of the pool. The coach was running toward us. I pulled him up out of the pool and started cpr when I saw he wasn't breathing. The coach took over the breathing while I did compressions. I looked around to see why nobody had helped sooner. It looked like most of the guys went back to shower and change. Coach said, "I just went in to take a leak, He was doing just fine." On my third round of compressions, he started coughing up the water in his lungs. We turned him onto his side and let him get the rest out. Chad, one of the kids trying out said, "There is an ambulance on the way it should be here soon." I sat down beside of him rubbing his back while he coughed up the rest of the water. I sat there with him and coach while we waited for ambulance. When the EMT's got there, I told them what happened, and how long he was out. I got up and walked back to the locker room. I felf really nausious. I ran into the bathroom just in time to throw up. I threw up till I was empty then some more. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and looked up to see Brad. I got up and hugged him tightly. We broke the hug when we heard the coach calling me. I rinsed my mouth out at the sink and walked out to meet him at the door. Brad gave me a look of concern, and I told him I was fine. The coach needed me in order to fill out the accident report for the school. Brad said, "I'll wait for you. I want to be the first to buy you a cold one. Soda, that is." Noticing the coach glaring at him. Coach said, "We're going to be about an hour. You can go around and pick up towells and put them over by the laundry. Members of the team take turns doing the laundry." Brad said, "That's a Varsity job. Why do I....... You mean I got it." Coach said, "You had the second best time. The torpedo here got the best time, and broke a record doing it." I said, "What record is that?" He said, Oh nothing really. Just the state time trial record." "I wasn't trying to break any records during the tryout. I was just trying to make my personal best. How much did I break it by?" He said, "Just by 5 seconds." He glanced over at me before cracking a smile. "Come on. Lets get this paperwork filled out so you can get home to your folks." Coach told me to shower and change first. When I finished dressing, I went to his office. I sat down and started filling my part of the report. We talked for a while about what happened, and what I can expect as far as further questions. I had to go meet with the principal in the morning, then on to the dean of students. Coach kept on telling me what a good job I had done. I told him I just did what I was trained to do. I told him about all the water safety training, and first aid I took. He looked at me funny, and I showed him the cards I kept in my wallet. He told me they might make an announcement about it. The principal, I guess, likes to recognise people for good deeds. I told him not to hold his breath for it. I explained my last meeting with him. He chuckled and told me to still expect it. Coach said, "You might have chastised one of his teachers, but you are definitely on his good side now. You saved that kids life out there today." I said, "Does that entitle me to a favor then?" He said, "It depends on what you ask. If I can do it, I will. The only thing I won't do is fix a grade. You're here on your own merits" I said, "No. It's nothing like that at all. I wouldn't ever even think to be like that. If I can't be here honestly, I don't want to be here at all. I was wondering if you would considder trying out another person for the team. He's a strong swimmer, but he couldn't be here today." Coach said, "If he wanted to be on the team, why didn't he show up. To me, it sounds like he might not be interested." I said, "He had a pretty rough family problem recently. His dad passed on, and it hit him pretty hard. I think it would be good for him to work through his grief with a goal. It'll help him with the anger that's soon to come too." Caoch said, "That's not a favor. I would have made the exception for any student with that kind of problem. Considder it done. I also called your dad while you were in the shower. He's comming to pick you up. I just told him you had a rough tryout. I want to tell him everything else in person. He's going to meet us at the main entrance." We met up with Brad and walked up to the front of the school. Brad kept looking at me with that same concerned look. It was the same look on his face, that night at the hospital. I reached over and gave him a sideways hug to reassure him. When we got up front, dad was waiting for us. He ran up to me and hugged me. I kept telling him I was ok. I told him I was really stressed out from the day. Dad finally let me go long enough to go talk to the coach. Brad and I sat in the back seat waiting for him. Brad took my hand and squeezed it tightly. Dad looked over at me a few times while they spoke. He was talking to the coach like they knew each other. They came over to the car when they finished talking. It turned out that My dad was in the Air Force with him, and went through the academy together. Dad came over and gave me a hug. He said, "I'm proud of you son, and you did a good job getting on the team too. I argued when you wanted to take all those classes, but I see that it paid off for you. Bob here, says you were like a machine. You just dove into the water, and pulled the kid out, and went to work on him before he could even get there" I said, "Dad, I just did what had to be done. I wish everyone would stop making a big deal out of it. Please. I know you are proud of me and all, but I just did what anyone else would have done. I was unlucky enough to be the one to do it. I was scared shitless and puked afterwards. That's the plain and simple truth." My dad looked at me for a minute and said, "I'm still proud of you. I'm proud because you did do what had to be done. Some people would have just ran to get help. You saw there wasn't time to get help. That's why." We talked for a few more minutes then drove home. Dad kept grinning at me through the mirror. When we got home, I sat down on the couch. I remember talking with Brad, and the next thing I knew, he was waking me up in my room. It was morning. I must have fallen asleep, and got carried up to bed. Brad said, "Good morning beautiful." Brad gave me a kiss and stroked my morning woodie. I kissed him right back, and pulled him into bed with me. We laid there for a few minutes while I woke up a little. Brad said, "I went home last night so you could get some sleep. You looked beat. You fell asleep about five minutes after you sat down. Your dad and I carried you up before I went home." I said, Thanks, but you guys could have let me sleep down there. I doubt I would have noticed." Brad said, "I know you didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but I told Aaron last night. I went over to see him after I left here. He really got a kick out of it. I also told him that you got him another tryout when he comes back to school. I hope you don't mind that I told him about the tryout. He was just really down that he missed it." I said, "That's ok. If that cheered him up, then it served it's purpose. On another note, I have to get to the bathroom before I have a bit of a problem. I stopped wetting the bed when I was three. I'm not about to start up again." Brad said, Can I hold it for you?" while following me into the bathroom. I laughed, and closed the door behind us. He certainly tried, but it wasn't going to happen with him stroking me at the same time. I finally managed to go, with my bladder winning over the feeling of a really great handjob. Brad shook it for me and pulled back my foreskin to make sure it was clean. He turned me around and kneeled infont of me as he turned the shower on. Brad took me into his mouth and sucked me right ther in the bathroom. He fishe his out and stroke it in time with his sucking. The feeling was incredible. I held on to the cabinet for support as he sucked me. When I finally came, I nearly passed out. I pulled Brad up and licked the excess cum off his chin before I kissed him. I knelt infront of him and did the same for him. When we finished up, I got in the shower and cleaned up. I got dressed, and we headed off to school. We talked along the way. We dropped by to see if Aaron was going to go. He decided to atleast try to make it through the day. Mrs.Welsh deciced to drive us because Aaron had a late start in the morning. Aaron seemed to be doing a lot better than I thought. He seemed to be getting the bounce back in his step. I was glad to see at least that had come back to him. On the drive to school, I had to retell the whole thing over Mrs.Welsh, because of the superman like telling by Brad. She immediately took their side saying I was a hero for doing it. I just kept downplaying it. When we got to the school, we talked out fron for a few minutes before I went to my meeting with the principal, and the dean of students. The principal looked surprised to see me. He said, "You're the one who pulled Todd out of the pool?" I said, "You sound surprised to find that I did something nice for someone. I may disagree with your choice in the hiring of a particular teacher, but that is where our problem stops. He needed help, and I was ther to give it." He said, "I didn't mean it like that, I..... Ok yeah, I thought you were going to be a problem student, but your grades are excelent so far, and your teachers all have good things to say about you. As far as Todd is concerned, I couldn't be more proud to have you as a student here. That was a very brave thing you did. Most people your age wouldn't have known what to do. Coach Daniels told me you performed cpr, and stayed by his side till the paramedics came." I said, "I took a bunch of water safety courses, last year. I have everythin I need to get my lifeguard certificate, but i have to wait another month till I'm 16. How is he doing anyway?" "I spoke to his parents last night. He was released from the hospital around eight. Luckily he wasn't under water too long. It's a good thing you were there. Coach says he only knew something was wrong when he saw you dive into the pool from the side with a floater." "I'm glad he's ok. Did they find out what caused him to go down like that?" "It seems that he went out to lunch with friends, and had a big lunch. It aparently gave him some pretty bad muscle cramps." "When is he going to be able to come back. He's in my spanish class, and he helps this gringo out." "He's here today. He said he was feeling well enough to come in." "Good. I'm glad he's feeling well enough to come back so quickly. He has good form. I hope he tries out again." "Speaking of which. I understand coach Daniels wants to put you on the varsity team. I was going to oppose it till i saw your times. This school hasn't made the sectionals in five years. You, and a few others might just make that change this year. As far as the record you broke, we're going to give you a plaque, and add your name to the others at next months assembly." "If you don't mind, I don't want to be put on the spot to say anything when you give it to me. I have trouble with large groups of people. I'm still not ready to deal with something like that" "Of course. I understand fully. I'll just introduce you, and hand it to you. All you have to do is take it and maybe wave. That's it." "I can deal with that." "Good. Now moving along to the seroius business, I have some forms we need you to sign for the accident report. I just sumarises what happened and what you did to help. We need it for the board of education. They saddle us with paperwork every time a student is injured. They want to make sure everything was done the right way." I looked over the documents, and signed off on the reports. I felt kind of grown up about it. I was surprised that they would need my input to help settle the matter. I just pulled one of my classmates out of the pool. I finished my meeting with the principal, and went on to the dean. We had a talk about what happened, and talked about me. I was kind of uncomfortable about the whole thing. I really don't like talking about myself to adults. He picked up on it and let me off the hook. I was able to make it back to class by second period. I kept getting wierd looks frome people in the halls. I got a few pats on the back. I made it to class and sat down. The teacher greeted me by name and then greeted the rest of the class. I could tell this was going to be a long day. I was lucky enough to make it till lunch without hearing anything else. I Met up with Brad and Aaron, and we ate together outside. I just didn't want to deal with anyone. I told them about the wierd looks and the pats on the back. Aaron said, "They probably heard about it from Mark. He's Todd's brother, and a senoir. I'm surprised he hasn't tracked you down yet. He's really overprotective when it comes to him. I'm sure he's going to want to at least talk to you." I said, "Do you guys know him?" Brad said, "We went to Jr. High with Todd. He's kind of nerdy, but an ok guy. He helped me pass algebra last year. We used to play football with his brother. It was kind of cool that he took the time to hang out with us." Aaron said, "I know them because my...my dad used to play golf with hid dad." Aaron sighed and kind of looked away for a minute. I put my hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me and managed a smile. He said, "I'm ok. I'm trying to think about our happy times together. I just have to get used to the idea of using past tense terms with him. I'm getting better. It's rough sometimes, but I've got you guys to lean on." Brad said, "You know we're always here for you buddy." We finished up our lunch and headed back in to make it to our lockers. I got my books for the afternoon classes, and headed to class. I was looking forward to my next class, because it was spanish. I reaaly want to learn the language. Living here, it's almost required. I almost regret taking french in Jr. High. I waled into class and said hi to the teacher, and nearly got tackled be Todd. He ran up to me and hugged me. I thought he was going to squeeze the life out of me. I returned his hug, and did my best to calm him down. When he finally let me go, he had tears in his eyes. Ms.Vasquez our teacher was trying to figure out what was going on. I said, "Todd, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" He said, "I had it all worked out what I was going to say to you, but now I can't even think of it. Just thanks man. I owe you everything. You saved my life. I don't know how I'm going to make it up to you, but I'm going to." He hugged me again a little less tightly this time. Everybody waslooking at us. They were stunned in silence. I said, "Todd if you want to make it up to me, just do your best to be a good person. The fact that you're standing here is reward enough for me. If that's not enough, try out for the team again. Jus don't eat a big lunch again." We had a little laugh and went to our seats. Everybody was still standing ther looking at us in silence. Ms.Vasquez broke the silence, which was kind of eerie. She said, "I guess I'll be the one to say it. We heard there was a water rescue yesterday. It was the topic of conversation in the teachers lounge. The only thing I heard about it was that a student dove in to pull an unconcious person out of the water and performed cpr ofr a few minutes to revive them. I had no idea it was you David. You're always so quiet. I never figured you for the type of person to do something like that." There was a round of agreement. Todd was siting there with tears on his cheeks. I noticed and handed him a kleenex out of my bag. I said, "Nobody told you what we had to do did they?" Todd said, "All they said is that I went under, and you pulled me out. I didn't know I was that close to dying. I guess they didn't tell me because it does sound pretty greusome. It must have been pretty rough on you." I said, "Actually, I was pretty scared. I just reacted to what I was trained to do. I took water safety courses last year to get lifeguard certification. When the EMT's got there I went to the bathroom and threw up. I don't think I'm readt to do that again, but I probably would if I had to. I must be nuts to even want to go though that again." "You're a kind, caring person. I think it's really sweet." said Kara, a girl in my class. She came over and kissed me on the cheek. I blushed, and everybody laughed. Kara gave me a sideways hug, and whispered in my ear, "I just wanted to see you blush, and it doesn't hurt that you're cute." I wached her walk back to her seat and sit down. She was kind of cute, for a girl. We finally got class started, we spent the time working on verbs. I was finding that it wasn't too far from french. It was just pronounced a little differently. I actually made it through this class without asking for help. I was beginning to get the hang of it. When class was over, I went on to my next class, thankfully, the last one of the day. It was history, kind of an easy class for me. I like it as much as any other class. We were doing some review for a test on thursday. I got bored about halfway through and decided to write in my journal for a the rest of the class. The teacher either didn't notice, or didn't care. When class was over, I got the books I needed for homework, and headed for my usual meeting place with Brad, and Aaron. Just as I made it around the corner, I bumped into what I thought was a wall. I looked up to see one of the largest, most intimidating looking people I've ever seen. I said, "Um..sorry, I didn't see you there. I was just in a hurry to get home." He said, "Nah... I'm just here waiting for someone. Hey, wouldn't happen to know Dave O'leary would you?" I said, "I've seen him around. Why you lookin' tobeat him up or something?" He said, "No nothing like that. He save my little bro from drowning yesterday." I put my hand out and said, "I'm Dave. You're kind of a big guy. I just wanted to make sure you were cool." He loked down at me, and chuckled. He said, "I get that a lot. I only look mean. I just wanted to meet you. We're really close since our parents got divorced. I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't saved him." He looked like he was about to cry. He picked me up in a bear hug. He was holding me so tight I couldn't breath. He finally put me back down and said, "You have any problems, you let me know, and I'll take care of it for you. My family owes you for big time for this" I said, "You don't owe me anything Mark. I just did what anybody else would have done. I'm just happy knowing he's ok." Mark thanked me again, and I went off to find Brad. They were waiting for me when I got there. I told them about my runin with him. They laughed and agreed with me that he was a big guy. We decided to walk home, and get a soda along the way. We walked home and did our homework at Aaron's house. We hung out and talked till around five, when dad called and wanted me to come home. Well, I'm going to leave it there. I'll post another chapter soon. I have to get a few more thing done at home before I can get back to writing full time. I'm hoping to wrap this story up over the next few months. I am going to finish it though. I'm just trying to put off the bad stuff that I have to write about. I've taken a lot of time talking about other people in this story. I do that because it's hard dealing with my own demons. I'm just scared that you might lose interest when I get to the bad stuff. Sorry, but it's the way I feel. Comments: dbriggs10@juno.com
