David's Story By b-boy1 Chapter 13 Brad and I had managed to settle things regarding comming out. Things got back to normal between us. The year started to fly by once swinnign season started. We worked really hard keeping our grades up to stay elligible. Brad, Aaron and I spent most of our weekends studying, because practice and meets took up our weeknights. Aaron was good at knowing when to give Brad and me time to be alone. We did really well our first seasonon the team. We almost got to state. I lost twice that season. Brad and Aaron lost to the same boy too. The guy was an animal. He was from one of the schools in Tuscon. He never bragged or anything, but he still got to me. I suppose it was just my competative nature. Dad called me a week before we got out for spring break. He said, "Do you think Brad and Aaron would be able to travel over spring break?' I said, "I'd have to ask. Why?" Dad said, "I was wondering if you guys would like to spend it at the summer house. Don't get their hopes up, but just find out if they can do it first. I don't want them to get dissapointed if they can't." I said, "I'll ask. I never told them about the house there. They might like it there." Dad said, "We have to use the place, or buy something closer. It was great when we only lived 4 hous away, but now, it's a 5 hour flight and an hour by car." I said, "Are you going to be able to make it up ther for break?" Dad said, " I'm here right now. I came to do some cleaning, and stock the pantry again. Thing were getting low after that party we hap up here last summer." I said, "I'll talk to Mrs. Welsh, and Mrs. Fisher. I'm sure they'll go for it." Dad said, "Alright then. I was just about ready to go back to the store for another load of stuff. I'll pick up a few more cases of soda, and finish stocking here. I'll be here for another few days working. I'm going to stay here till then. If you find out, I'll just leave the fridge stocked." I said, "I'll ask tonight, and call you to let you know." Dad said, "OK....Be good. I love you son. I said, "Love you too dad." We hung up, and I went up to my room to finish my homework. After I finished, I walked over to Brad's house. Mrs. Fisher was in the kitchen when I walked in. I looked around real quick to see if brad was around and went in to talk to her. I said, "Mrs. Fisher, Can we talk for a few minutes?" She said, "Sure sweetie. What's on your mind?" I said, "I just got off the phone with my dad, about an hour ago. He made me an offer for spring break. He asked me to talk to you about it." She said, "What kind of offer?" I said, "Dad offered to let me and two of my best friends spend out spring break at out summer home." She said, "Oh..... Have you asked anyone yet?" I said, "I'd really like for Brad and Aaron to come with me. I didn't ask Brad directly, because dad told me to ask you first. He thought it would be best if asked you first" She said, "Where is this summer home?" I said, "It's in upstate New York. The Thousand Islands region. It's a really nice area. She said, "That's all the way across the country. Is your father going to be there?" I said, "He's going to be in and out most of the time. He's going to be working on a few small projects in the reigon. There isn't going to be any alcahol, becauseI can't have it, and dad would never allow it. The sheriff's department dock is 200 feet down fome us. The whole area is really safe." She said, "I'd feel better about it if I could talk to your father about this." I pulled out my cell phone, and dialed his number. "Dad?" "Oh...Hi David...something wrong?" "No, nothing wrong. I was wondering if you had a few minutes to talk to Mrs. Fisher?" "Yeah sure. Let me guess. You couldn't wait, and ran over there after you did your homework?" "You know mw too well dad" "heheheheh....Ok...is she there right now?" "Yeah..hang on a sec..." I handed my phone to Mrs. Fisher and let her talk. She asked a lot of questions, and listened while dad explained his offer to her. She gave my phone back to me. "Dad?" "Mrs. fisher is going to talk to Mrs. Welsh, and if Aaron can go, so can Brad" "YEAH!!!!!!!....OMG you are so awesome dad." "yeah yeah yeah....Just remember that when you have to clean up the grounds, and paint the fence while you're there." "Dad, just getting to have my friends up there with me will be worth it." "Ok then....I'm about to get off the expressway here. I'll call you tomorrow to see what happens" "ok dad Thanks, and I love you" "love you too son" "bye" "bye" When I hung up with dad, I looked at Mrs. Fisher, and smiled. I gave her a big hug and thanked her for being so wonderful. She said, "I think it would be safe to ask them. Brad and Aaron are upstairs working on their homework." I said,"Thanks again. This means a lot to me. Brad and Aaron are my first real friends that dad has allowed me to bring there." I went upstairs and walked into Brads room. Brad looked up and smiled. He said, "Hi baby. You all done with homework?" I said, "Yup. Dad called. He wants me to work on the summer home during spring break" I did my best to look sad. Aaron and Brad looked like I kicked thier puppies. Brad said, "So you're going to be gone all during spring break?" Aaron said, "Dude, I thought your dad was kewl, now, he just sucks." I said, "It's not all that bad." Brad was almost crying "How can you say that? You're just taking off and leaving us here while you hang out god knows where." I said, "I never said I was leaving you guys here." Aaron picked up on it and started to grin I said, "Dad asked me if I wanted to, I could I'nvite two friends along. I was wondering if you guys wanted to come along?" Brad said, "My mom would never go for it." He looed back down toward the bead and started to look sad again. Aaron said, "You've already asked them haven't you?" I said, "I wouldn't have even said anything about it unless I already asked. I would have stayed here and hung with my sweetie and you." Brad said, "You already asked my mom?" I nodded Aaron said, "What did she say?" I said, "She said she still had to talk it over with your mom, and Brad's dad, but she said it shouldn't be hard convincing them. We've all done good in school this year so far. We deserve a break. Besides, I'm going to put you ugly asses to work before you can have any fun. I have a fence to paint, and 2 acres of yard to clean up. I also have to screen the sand on the beach to get rid of the crap that washes up every spring. We just do it so it looks nice. The waters too cold this time of year to really swim in it." Aaron said, You have a private beach?" I said, "It's only a few hundred feet long. It's more for looks than anything. It's a good place to get a tan at least." Brad said, "Dude, you had me going there. I thought I was going to be miserable all during spring break." I said, "If it came down to a choice of going ther alone, or staying here with you guys, I'd stay here. You are my friends, and I would never ditch you to go hang out there, no matter how kewl it is there." We hung out talking, and I told them about the place, and offered to show them the neighborhood where I lived, if we had time to see it. They were both pretty excited about going somwhere over spring break. I told them they might want to pack a few warm things, because it still get cold there this time of year......Well, cold for them. It was 102 that day in Arizona. The temps in that part of N.Y. are still in the 40's and 50's at night, and maybe 65 or 70 if you're luck during the day. Pretty much freezing cold to them. We spent the night at Brad's house that night. Mr. Fisher told us it was ok to go, the next morning when we ate breakfast. We were all so psyched at school that day. it was hard to concentrate on classes. The week flew by before we knew it. I finised up my packing and had to help Brad and Aaron with theirs. They didn't do much traveling, so I helped. Aaron wanted to bering his sega (r). I told him to just bring his game cd's over to my house, and I'd load them into the cd changer. I'd connect and download them so we could play them. We stayed the night at Aarons house, so we could get a ride to the airport when Mrs. Welsh went to work in the morning. Brad and Aaron were both given money so they would have some spending money. Not that they would need it for more than souveneers. Dad stocked the house so we would have more than enough food, and plenty of junk food, and soda for a few weeks of partying. We didn't get much sleep. We stayed up most of the night talking about New York. Niether of them had ever been there. For me, it was going back to a place that held some pretty bad memories. For them, it was an adventure. A chance to be free from parents for a while. I was hoping I would have a chance to introduce Brad and Aaron to Josh. I had thought about Josh one morning about a month ago. It was so wierd. I woke up in the middle of the night and sat straight up in bed. I saw his face so clearly, it was like he was right there in the room with me. I shook it off as a dream, and went back to bed. Josh stopped writing to me not too long after I moved to Arizona. I figured he just got busy with school and found a new boyfriend too. We got up in the morning, and went out to breakfast with the Fishers and Mrs. Welsh before we went to catch our plane. I called dad, when We got to the gat, to let him know we would be there in about 6 hours or so. He said he would be waiting for us when we landed. I hung up with him just as they announced that we could board. Well........ I'm going to leave it there for now. Things are really busy here. School has started back up and homework is piling up. I wanted to take a few lines to say something about some truly brave Americans. The members of the New York Police & Fire Departments. These people are paid little, and often respected even less. Thes men and women willingly gave their lives to save others. They didn't do it because they are paid to. They did it, because they truly cared about the people they swore to protect. I have a small favor to ask of all who read this. The next time you see one of their brother and sister firemen and policemen, give them the respect they deserve. You never know when it will be their turn to protect you from danger. They go to work every day knowing that it might be their last. They do this for us, so we can live our happy little lives. It might be as simple as buying a cup of coffee for the cop standing behind you in line at the coffeehouse, or the drive through. A simple nod also goes a long way to showng you support too. You might not think of it as much, but if even a few people a day acknowledge their hard work, it will go a long way. They might not admit it, but they do like to know they make a difference.
