The soft voice startled me out of my deep thought process. I looked around to see one of my classmates. My year group was on a weeklong camp out in the woods somewhere. I still wasnt entirely sure as to where we were. All I knew was that it was a beautiful place. I was currently sitting on the balcony on the third floor of the dormitory building. I thought I was the only one that was awake this early in the morning. We werent due to wake up for another hour or so. I have always been an early riser, as I sat there I looked out over the countryside and it quite simply took my breath away. The other boy seemed to hesitate momentarily before he sat on the wooden boards next to me. We just sat in silence for a few minutes just soaking up the beauty. Finally my companion said once again in his soft, sweet voice. "Its absolutely beautiful isnt it." I nodded slightly, at first I thought it would be better if I didnt speak, just let the landscape do its job, but then I realised I might be considered rude if I did that. So while I kept my eyes out over the balcony I said. "Yeah that it definitely is." Once again there was silence for a few moments, I looked at my companion and realised that he looked like he might even cry. While I didnt know this boy extremely well, he certainly didnt strike me as the kind of guy who might cry over something like this. I decided to try and show a bit of compassion towards the boy and see how he reacted. Dont get me wrong Im not a really bad person. But I have only been at this school for just under a month, I was nearly going to miss this camp for the school's year eight students. I knew most of the kids by name, but I wouldnt really have considered too many to be my friend. I had also learnt the hard way thanks to my old school that you have to be very careful when choosing your friends. Because they can turn against you in a blink of an eye. "How did you sleep." The boy's name was Liam Spencer. He wasnt really one of the mst popular kids in our year but he was liked by most people that I had talked to. He was pretty smart and not really a trouble maker. Liam turned away from the view to look at me for a few moments. "Yeah I slept okay I guess. Its really peaceful here. A good chance to take youre mind off of life if you know what I mean." I knew exactly what he heant. Well I sort of I guess. But I didnt know what it was that he needed to take his mind off of. "I definitely do know what you mean." We both stared at each other for quite a while in complete silence, I think we were trying to figure each other out. Liam seemed like he was going to say something, but then he thought better of it. So I decided to ask the next question instead. "So Liam, how long you been at the Valley." It was quite a pathetic question but I had nothing else that I could could come up with. A bit of a sad look flashed accross his face. But it only lasted for a few moments, before he responded. "Ive been there for just under six months." I was slightly suprised, i thought he had been there for longer. I paused for a moment while considering my next question. Then went with the obvious. "What school did you go to before." Liam again looked sad for a few moments before t vanished to again be replaced by a sweet smile. "I went to Ferguson for seven years." I was slightly confused. Ferguson was in a seperate state, and realistically in a different league to Valley. i became curious as to why he had made such a drastic change. Why'd you move." I decided to be direct. Liam however frowned and loked as though he wasnt going to respond so I decided to throw in. "You dont have to tell me if you dont want to." He grimaced slightly and then finally said so quietly that I could barely eve hear him. "A lot of trouble started there involving me and it was decided that it would be better if I moved." I had a quick flashback of what had happend at my old school and it sounded very similar. But obviously for different reasons. I looked at Liam forthe longest time, before I asked. "What did youre parents say about having to move." A tear formed in his eyes and I realised that maybe I had gone too far. He wiped at his eye inashamedly, as though he didnt care that I saw him crying. "Theyre still out there with my two brothers. They sent me here to live with my uncle." My heart broke. Why would parents do such a thing. Surely no matter what Liam had done wrong it wasnt worth disowning their son for. Suddenly Liam sniffled and I realised that he was fully crying now. I had apparently really hit a soft spot with this boy. I couldnt fight the urge and I wrapped my arm around his slightly trembling shoulder and gave him a hug. At first Liam hesitated to recieve the hug but after a few moments he turned into me and we embraced. "Im sorry to hear that. That wasnt right of them to do that." Liam was silent for a few moments, before he shook his head. "Its what I deserved." I hugged Liam tighter, and stroked him on the back. Even though we were the same age he was slightly shorter then me so this hug just felt comfortable. Liam didnt complain in the slightest. "Surely you didnt deserve that. I mean Ive been a terrible kid but I still live with my parents." Liam shook his head only slightly, but I knew it was a useful argument at least for now. So I just stayed quiet as we sat there looking out accross the countryside. I occasioally looked at Liam to make sure he was okay. The last time that I did it I realised that he was looking at me. "Whats wrong." He realised that I had caught him staring. He tried to look away but it seemed as though he couldnt. He frowned as he finally asked me. "I was just wondering why youre being so nice. I mean we barely even know each other." Now that he had asked the question I actually started to wonder the same thing myself. "I dont know really. I guess I just have a heart buried somewhere in my chest." It was supposed to be a lame attempt at a joke but I knew that I hadnt pulled it off. Liam just continued to look at me. "Well for what its worth Thankyou." Then suddenly without warning he kissed me. Not on the cheek. But lightly on the lips. I was so stunned that I couldnt even move or respond. I tried to think but before I had a chance,. Liam broke the kiss and looked at me horrified. We stared at each other for a few moments before he stood up and started to move away at a frantic pace. Well ladies and gentlemen that is the end of cahpter one I hope that you liked it. Please tell me whether you did or not. deathharris89@yahoo.com.au Until next time.
