Gerald had to admit that he was as much in the dark as J was and Jean also claimed to know nothing about the subject matter as well. While J had already learned what two of his surprises on return from camp were this third one was eating a hole in his patience as he had nothing to go on to try and surmise what it might be about. Chapter 170. The three boys had started to watch television and were looking at some sports magazine program when Jean came in and asked if they would be willing to help her get supper ready. "Of course mum." J responded immediately. "What do you want us to do?" "I'm right behind J too Jean. Just give the orders and your under-chefs will do your bidding." Gerald offered. "I want to help too." Andy said. "And you can. I will find some jobs you can do and if we all work together we will get enough food cooked on time for our guests." Jean answered. J was quick to pick up on what Jean had said and asked, "Guests? I thought it was only Jeff coming." "J, are you still jet-lagged. I know he is your boyfriend and we will look on him as one of the family, but Gerald does not live here and so is a guest. But Jeff is also bringing someone else with him." Jean chided J. "Oh, who?" J asked. "I'm not sure if Jeff gave us a name, or even a gender of the person. But there will be seven of us for dinner tonight and talking here will not get it ready. Now off to the kitchen." Jean ordered. Once they were in the kitchen, Jean set about giving them each a job to do including Andy whose first job was to count the potatoes which were to be peeled and prepared for roasting. Then Jean had him help her to shell peas. Although the Brackleys did use frozen foods from time to time, Jean preferred to use fresh foods as much as possible. So she would go along to the market and buy a pocket of peas in their shell and sit and shell them as she watched TV in an evening. Gerald got the job of peeling and had potatoes, parsnips and carrots to peel. J was given the honour of preparing the roast. Being a beef roast he set about stabbing holes into it with a sharp knife and stuffing a mixture of freshly chopped green herbs and crushed garlic into the holes. Smearing a pan with olive oil J dusted the roast with flour and then placed the joint into the pan and dribbled some more olive oil over the meat itself. Before covering it with tin foil and putting it into the oven to cook on a fairly low heat for a couple of hours. J was a little relieved to have the distraction of helping to prepare the meal as his curiosity was in overdrive while his mind came up with various scenarios, that were just as quickly dismissed, for the purpose of Jeff's visit and now with the added mystery of who the other person he was bringing with him was. Once the meat was in the oven and the vegetables were prepared and waiting for the right time to start cooking them, they went back into the lounge to continue watching the programme. Jean joined them and J asked if she had met Jeff already. "Yes. Jeff phoned us after you gave him your number and said he had something to discuss with us. We invited him to come and have a meal, but the only night he could come was my WI night and so immediately after dinner, I went off to the Institute meeting and dad and Jeff had a discussion, which Jeff asked dad to keep confidential and so I do not know what was discussed as your father has been very good at keeping it under wraps. They talked for a bit more and every so often J would get up to go and check on the roast; then at the right time, Jean took Andy to "help" her to get the other veggies cooking, adding the potatoes and parsnips to the roasting pan with the beef. During the times when Jean took Andy out of sight, J and Gerald would give each other a more intimate cuddle and kiss with a surreptitious fondle or two if they thought it was safe for them to do so. Whether Jean was purposely taking Andy out of the way to give the two of them this freedom will never be known because she would never let on to them that she had aided and abetted them in their love making. That Jean was accepting of their leaning was enough. Just on five o' clock, Jean sent Andy up to have his bath and get ready. She told him he could put his pyjamas on as even though they were having people for dinner it would be okay for him. Andy made no objections and happily went off to do what he had been asked to do. Just as he was leaving the lounge, Jean reminded him to take his clean stuff into the bathroom with him so that he could leave all his dirty clothes in the laundry basket which was in the bathroom. Once she was sure that Andy had gone upstairs, she turned to Gerald and J and said, "Jeff is supposed to be here at about seven, so I would suggest you two get in your showers as soon as Andy has finished to make sure the bathroom is free for dad when he gets home as I am sure he will want to wash the city off of him before the guests arrive." "Sure thing mum. Will you keep an eye on the food while we are showering and getting ready, please?" J confirmed and asked. "Of course. But I would appreciate it if you get ready quite quickly so that I can then go and get ready myself while you watch the food." she answered. "We will be as fast as we can, Jean." Gerald assured her. "No hanky-panky in the shower then J." And he blushed scarlet as he realised how his words might be taken. Jean couldn't suppress a smile as saw Gerald's discomfort. Especially when J caught on to what he had just said and burst into raucous laughter. "That's one that will go down in the books." He managed to get out between his chortles. "Perhaps you better go and share Andy's bath. At least we can trust you with him." J continued adding insult to injury and Gerald just shrank in embarrassment, but also laughed as he could see the funny side of it all as well. The two teens lived up to their promise and by the time John got home, they were ready and watching the food while Jean got ready and so John went on up to join her saying he would have his cup of tea after he had got ready for the evening. And through that they were all ready and the food was at the right stage to be left for a little bit when Jeff arrived. As the doorbell rang, John said, "J would you go and let Jeff in please." John had a bit of twinkle in his eye and a sly grin because he knew that bit more than anyone else in the room. J stood up straight away and headed to the front door without evening really acknowledging John's request. The thing is he was so eager to learn who the mystery guest was, wild horses would not have kept him from going to the door. Because of that he did not notice John's gesture to Gerald to stay where he was. J opened the door and said "Hi." Then he gave a shout and said, "Rod! Man it is good to see you too." He stepped forward and gave Jeff a hug, and then turned to Rod who pulled him into a hug as well. "J, do you think we could go inside so that I can greet your parents and boyfriend as well." Jeff teased J broke away from the hug he was giving Rod apologising. "Sorry, sure, please come in." J gestured for them to go ahead of him and once they had slipped off their shoes they headed down the passage. "First door on the right, guys." He called out as Jeff neared the door to the lounge. J followed the two closely into the lounge and then began introductions. "Jeff, I think you have met everybody here except this great guy, Gerald. Gerald this is the Jeff I have told you about. And Rod, this is my mum, Jean, and dad, John. Mum and dad, this is Rod who was on the first camp with me and Gerald. And this little man here is Andy, my brother." J said as he bent down and picked Andy up. "Andy this is Jeff," he told him as he pointed to Jeff, "and this guy's name is Rod." J concluded the introductions. "Well, supper is ready so I suggest we get straight in with drinks and supper together and you guys can all catch up with each other while we eat so that Jeff can talk about whatever has to be so secret that even I could not be told over coffee after dinner." Jean suggested. "Yes I think that is a good plan. J would you mind sorting out drinks for everyone and if you guys want, I will even agree to share some of my beers with you." John said. "Ok dad. Tell me what you want and I will get them ready and bring them to the dining room." J said obediently. Then turning to Jean, "Mum, as the only lady present you get to order your drink first." "Thank you J. I think I will have a glass of red wine please." Jean said and went off to the kitchen to begin serving the food. J got all the drinks ready including a beer each for Rod, Gerald and himself and soda stream with a bit of froth on top for Andy so that his drink would look a bit like the beers the older boys were having. The glow of joy on Andy's face told J that he had made a right decision as far as that went. Fortunately the long walk and all the work he had to do helping to prepare the dinner, had left Andy tired out and so it did not take a lot of persuading to get him off to bed shortly after dinner. Jean took on the responsibility of getting him settled and was only gone about fifteen minutes. When she returned, she told them that his eyes were closing almost as soon as his head touched the pillow and that she was fairly certain that he was he asleep before she had left the room. By the time she had got back from settling Andy down for the night, J and Gerald had got the coffees ready and so all was set for Jeff to reveal.
