In And Out Chapter One I sat there hoping the day would end, letting the summer begin. I sat there, starring at the clock in absolute hatred as each minute passed like an endless hourglass. The school year was ending today, although slow and pointless, I waited for that bell to ring to release me out of Skybrook High School to start my summer adventures, or so I called them. I sat next to Annie, my best friend since fourth grade, who I hoped would be my companion until I move away to college, or in unlikely thought-until I died. She gave me a look of torture and misery as she too had been watching the clock with anticipation. I droned out the sound of our teacher, Mr. Wagner, as he gave a final speech about what a great class we were, and how he would miss us, although the summer was only a three month period, I would be seeing him next year. My name is Gabriel, Gabriel Newsome, but all my friends and relatives called me Gabe, with the annoying acceptance of my grandmother. I am fifteen years old, and live in southeaster Pennsylvania with my family. I had two sisters, a mother, and a father who was no longer living with us. My mom and dad had not been divorced yet, but they were separated as long as my mother could earn enough money to pay for a decent divorce lawyer. I was about 5'10, light brown hair with blonde patches, my hair always turned to blonde during the summer, one of my curses. I had dark brown eyes, like tree bark, and an Irish tan, which I like to prefer as very white, and always likely to get sun burnt. I was about 160 pound, and a lot of muscle, but I was no body builder. I wasn't much of anything. I considered myself handsome in some aspects, and I was always told that I had a sort of baby face. I was not the most popular kid in school; I didn't even run with a popular crowd. My three best friends in the world were Annie, Laura, and Megan. I know what you're thinking, what about guy friends, but it is commonly said that most guys who hang with mostly girls are homosexual, in my case, it was true. I've had many friends over the years who were males, but I never actually got close enough to them to believe I could love them, like I do with Annie, Laura, and Megan. Only Annie knew that I was gay, and that was enough for right now. The bell rang loud and roughly through the rooms and halls as everyone in each class spilled into the hallway in different directions to their lockers. I had already collected all my belongings the day before, my locker was empty, I exited that school as fast as my feet could go. I reached outside and looked around for Annie, but she was no where to be seen. I figured that she was still inside the school getting her things, so I waited. That was when I saw Laura come out the doors as she approached me with a stubborn smile, the kind of smile that she had when you knew that nothing could upset her. Laura was attractive, in a friendly kind of way; I knew that I had not been personally attracted to her or any of my other girl friends, or any other girl in school. Not many boys there were so great looking, but a lot of times I would look past looks to see if a friend was hidden inside someone. Laura had wavy thing blonde hair a tall skinny form. When she finally got through the crowd, I found myself face to face with her. "Gabe, do you want to come over and we can chill for a bit?" She asked in a way so joyfully, that I couldn't reject her offer. "Okay, I've got nothing better to do." I said as I started walking off. "Oh but wait, I was going to see Annie wanted to walk home with me." I said as started turning around. But she lightly grabbed my shoulder in objection. "I heard her say she was going to get a ride with Megan, besides, three's a crowd, you've got me, that's all you need." She said as she removed her hand from my shoulder and grasped my hand. I knew that Laura always had a crush on me, but I never found a real way of letting her know that I wasn't interested, without hurting her feelings or exposing that I was gay. So I always kind of made myself act like it was normal, and never let things get further than a hug or holding hands. Laura had always had a reputation for being wild. We got to her house as she walked inside as turned to go into the kitchen. Her dog had been barking for almost five minutes when she turned to the large drown golden retriever and kicked Orion in his throat, very hard. Orion was his name, and Orion squealed in agony as he walked away simply. "That'll teach you to shut the fuck up!" she screamed after him as the dog disappeared into the back room. I looked at her in surprise as she noticed my glances. "What!?" "You shouldn't treat your dog like that, it's wrong, and one of these days he's going to snap on you and end up biting you leg off." I warned in an over exaggeration as she rolled her eyes and got up from the couch and walked over to the refrigerator. Laura rolling her eyes was her way of ending a conversation. She reached into the fridge and pulled out a full bottle of Smirnoff's Vodka unopened. "My mom's birthday present she said as she took the bottle and put it on the table and she pulled out two lemons from the fruit drawer and snatched up two shot glasses. "You interested?" she asked motioning to the bottle. "Looks like I don't have a choice." I said with a devilish smile as I popped the cap and took a long swig to show my wild sense of humor. The liquor burnt my throat as it went down, but I knew that I would be feeling good later on. She handed me a shot glass that said Sex on the Beach, and her shot glass said Sex Is Always Easier When Your Easy and Your Drunk! "You know my family and I are going down to the shore next weekend, you want to come?" she said playfully as she kept looking at my shot glass. I ignored this statement as I had taken eleven shots of Vodka, and about twenty minutes later, I was trashed and so was she. She cuddled up next to me with that smile on her face again, and I tried to pull away. I smelled her hangover breath, and I knew she was going to try something. She tried to climb on top of me and I shooed her away again, beginning to feel uncomfortable. When she tried to kiss me, and I got up, she looked up at me still smiling. "Stop Laura, I don't want to do this!" I yelled at her with a little sympathy in my voice for I knew about her drunken condition, and mine. "Oh come on, I know you want me, everyone wants me!" she said vainly still smiling as she reached for my crotch. "Not me! Never me Laura, never me!" I shot back not even aware of what I was saying. "I don't like you, I don't like Annie, I don't like Megan, I don't like any of you girls!" I said with truth on my tongue but regret in my soul. "What are you gay?" she asked kind of accusing as she gave me an awkward look still grinning. "Yes Laura, I'm gay, and I'm sorry!" I said with tears forming in my eyes. He smile suddenly disappeared, and a look of fury took over her. "You fucking faggot! Get out of my house! Get out!" she screamed at me, and I tripped over the carpet and fell to the floor by how shocked I was. "Laura I--" she cut me off. "Just leave, I don't even want to look at you! You've been leading me on for years, and I hate you, I HATE YOU!!!!!" she screamed in uncontrollable rage as she pushed me out the door and slammed it shut with a lock What had I done? I asked myself in horror as I left her front lawn. The next day, I realized exactly how stupid I was for telling her.
