"Hi, Josh. I'm Tim Washington, and I have an offer for you." Curious, Josh settled back into his leather chair as Tim continued, "I've heard good things about your work at the architectural firm from Geoff Jackson, your manager. I must admit, I'm intrigued by your attention to detail and your work ethics. I would like to invite you to my estate near Gettysburg for a meeting with my husband Andrew and myself concerning an offer of employment with us." A slim-built man in his late 30's with brown hair, dressed in a sharp-looking dark burgundy suit came up behind Tim, settling his hands on Tim's shoulders. "This is Andrew, my life-long partner since we were young," Tim continued, looking back at Andrew with a happy smile. "Greetings, Joshua," Andrew said in a deep voice. "We both extend our sympathies on Scott's passing, and as Tim mentioned, we would like to meet with you. Your work ethic is excellent and we both think you are destined for great things. I'm most impressed with the efficiency you displayed in designing that new mall for Gettysburg. It was a most exquisite plan. I particularly liked the central court layout with the use of glass and crystal. You're to be commended." Josh shifted in his seat, blushing and muttered, "Don't lay it on too much buddy." Fumbling with his water bottle and taking a swig, he heard Andrew say, "We'd like to also introduce our son, Joey." Josh looked back at the screen and his jaw dropped. A chunky-built young man with blonde hair had appeared on the screen. Joey had very fair skin with a clear complexion, ice-blue eyes and features that individually looked ordinary, but together were like a model's face. Josh felt himself involuntarily responding to the beauty he saw. Good grief, he thought. This guy is just... beautiful. His heart gave an extra thump and he couldn't peel his eyes off the screen as he received a shock - Joey signed to him! [Hi, Josh. I hope to get a chance to meet you. Feel free to come on out, we'd like to meet you] Joey signed with a grin on his face. A voice-over informed Josh of what Joey was signing. Josh quickly stopped the DVD, backing up to where he could see Joey's face clearly and studied it for a few moments. Getting his wits back, Josh took a deep breath and started the DVD up again. [I really hope you'll come. Talk to you later] Joey finished with the cutest smile Josh had seen since Scott had passed away. As the scene cut back to Timothy and Andrew, Josh fought an irrational desire to back up and watch Joey's face and signing again. "Come on over, Josh," Tim said. "Andrea will be back in the morning to receive your answer. We've arranged a leave of absence from your work whenever you are ready and will provide transportation to and from the estate at your convenience. We'd really like to meet you," Tim finished as Andrew and he smiled. The video changed to scenes from the estate - an arboretum, what looked like a sports facility, and finally the outside of a stately mansion. The clip shifted to a picture of Joey, Tim and Andrew standing together then faded to black. Josh sat back, becoming aware that he'd been unconsciously leaning forward. Manipulating his mouse, he backed the clip up to Joey's face and studied it again for a few minutes. Abruptly leaning back and undoing his pants, he stared at Joey's face and quickly got off. Chuckling at himself, he wiped himself off with some Kleenex and headed for the bathroom. After he showered, he dressed in a pair of running shorts and went to the kitchen, getting himself a glass of juice. Walking to the living room and picking up the envelope, he sat in an easy chair. Flipping on the TV, he opened and read the material during commercial breaks of the baseball game he was watching. "Hmm," Josh said aloud. "A formal invitation to a visit. I guess they felt the need to have this accompany the DVD. I think I'll go." He turned off the TV, got up out of his chair and shut down his computer, hesitating as he did so when hit with a desire to see Joey again. On the heels of that came a sobering realization. Grabbing his diary, he sat down at the desk and made a new entry. *** Diary entry: *** Today's been a real shocker. I went over to Mom and Dad's to get that DVD for Trish before going to the gym, and guess what I found in my bedroom? Dad and Brad. They were kissing and cuddling. I about died. After some talking, Dad admitted that Brad and he had been intimate. They didn't say what they did exactly other than watching each other get off and I don't want to know what else they did. Mom and Dad's marriage is understandably having problems. I really hope they can work pass this and that Brad and Dad can control themselves. Dad is all Brad has, but I don't want Mom to leave Dad because of that. Maybe I'm just being selfish, but I want them to stay together. However, at the same time, I really feel for Brad. Janice is divorcing Brad, and she blames me for Scott's death. How can she accuse me of that? It doesn't make sense. She's became unhinged by the sound of it. I love her, but she's gone bananas. After Mom and Dad's, I went to the gym, and then came home. Right after I got here, two people showed up and we had an interesting conversation. Their names are Andrea and Mark. I'd guess Mark is gay from his eyeballing me. I'm not sure about Andrea, but my gaydar is saying something. Maybe she's a lesbian. Anyways, they left a DVD and a slim package. The DVD had an invitation from Tim Washington and his hubby Andrew to visit their estate near Gettysburg. They're the ones that own the architectural firm. They seem like nice people and have a nice looking place. They apparently have job offer for me. Then something I've not felt since Scott died appeared. Desire and attraction. Tim and Andrew's son Joey appeared for a short time on the screen. One look at his face and I just went nuts. I wound up jacking off. It's just a reaction to someone like that, I guess. He's beautiful. Anyways, it hit me later why Derek and I are having problems. He doesn't attract me. I like him, he's my best friend, but I have no wish to become his lover. I don't know what's keeping me back. This is weird. I'm taking the offer and going. It'll be good to get away from here for a few days. *** end diary *** Josh closed the diary, locked it into his desk, and got into bed, feeling a sense of guilt for jerking off to Joey's image and knowing he was going to have to tell Derek how he felt. Drifting off into a restless sleep, Josh dreamed. On a familiar island, Scott was sitting, looking at the sea, clad only in a pair of shorts. He looked very healthy and tanned. Feeling drawn to Scott, Josh walked towards him, feeling hot sand and a warm breeze. Just as he reached Scott, the sound of a helicopter came from in front of him and he saw the 'copter approaching the island. Scott stood up to watch as the helicopter hovered overhead, and dropped some medium-sized packages, then veered away from the beach, going back towards the sea. Scott trudged towards the packages and picked them up. Josh moved in front of Scott - and woke up in shock as he passed right through him! Sitting up and gasping for breath, Josh looked wildly about him. "What the...?" Shivering and trying to master his emotions, he scrambled out of bed and hurried into the shower, making the water as hot as he could, holding on to the wall. Standing there, he let the water stream down his back and cried, his tears mingling with the water as he tried to calm down. After the water turned to cold, he shut it off and grabbed a towel, getting out and sitting on the toilet wrapped in his towel. When a few minutes had passed, he dried off, got back into bed, and tried to sleep, thoughts of Scott and the island haunting him. The next morning, he jerked awake as the alarm went off. Muttering imprecations at it, he shut it off and groaned, noticing he only had 4 hours of sleep. After going through his normal morning routine, he was startled by a phone call just as he was about to eat. "Hello, this is Josh." "Good morning, buddy," sounded the resonant tones of Geoff, Josh's manager. "No need for you to come into work today. You've been placed on indefinite paid leave by Mr. Washington if you decide to take that trip to Gettysburg to see him." "I didn't expect that. He must have been very sure I'd accept." "Well, are you?" Geoff asked patiently. Josh sighed. "Yeah, I decided last night I was going to take the trip. Nice to know I'll be paid for going," he laughed. "Lucky you! Well, you enjoy yourself and I'll see you when you get back. I'm glad you got that project done yesterday. I hate to lose you even for a few days," Geoff complained. "I will. Thanks for letting me know, Geoff." "Anytime, Josh. Oh, yeah, call Andrea at 555-2311. She's waiting to hear from you," Geoff explained. "I will. Thanks, and have a great day." Grumbling under his breath, Geoff hung up. Josh chuckled and hung up, redialing the number. On the third ring, a woman answered, "Hi, this is Andrea." "Andrea, this is Josh. I'm accepting the offer and going for the visit," Josh answered in polite tones. "Great, what time do you want us to be there? The trip will take about 4 hours, so if we leave by noon, we'll be in time for some conversation and dinner." Josh thought to himself for a moment and fidgeted. "How about 11? I need to do a few things before I leave." Josh could hear the smile in her voice as she replied, "We'll be there at 11, then. See you then - unless you have something else you would like to discuss?" "No, that's fine. See you then. Bye!" "Bye," and Josh heard the receiver hang up. Josh set the handset down and loosened his tie. "Might as well tell Mom and Dad, Derek and visit Scott for a few." After calling his parents and then Derek, Josh finished his breakfast and quickly packed a bag, bringing several changes of clothing and personal necessities. Setting the bag next to the door and starting the dishwasher, he sauntered out the door and made his way to the cemetery. After walking to Scott's grave, he unfolded the blanket he'd brought along and sat down, facing the headstone. "You know, buddy, I've got some major news for you. Last night I went over to my parents' place to get that DVD for Trish and found our dads in our bedroom. They were kissing and cuddling. They've become lovers again, it seems. I about had a heart attack. Your mom has filed for divorce and my parent's marriage is a tad rocky right now. Your mom is blaming me for your death and that is why your parents are splitting. I think she's gone off the deep end. I'm worried about all of this and I don't know what to do." Josh continued as he reached forward to touch the facsimile of Scott's face on the stone, "I got an offer from Mr. Washington. You know, the guy that owns the firm. He wants me to come out to visit for a few days and interview for a job offer. I don't know what kind of job, but I'll listen. Mr. Washington and his hubby have a son about your age, a blond chunky-built guy. He's beautiful. You would have gone nuts over his picture. That picture affected me so much I wound up jacking off. That led me to realize that I have no attraction to Derek. I'll have to find a way to talk to him about stuff the next time I see him." "I had a dream about you last night, baby. You were on the same island I've been dreaming about for the last 2 weeks, and some boxes were being dropped off to you by helicopter. Silly dream. I know you've never been to an island like that. Wonder why I'm dreaming of that place and you?" "Well, I guess that's about all the news. I love you, baby." Josh leaned forward to kiss the stone. "I'll be back in a few days and let you know what happened." Getting to his feet and picking up the blanket, he made his way to his car and drove back to the apartment to wait for Andrea and Mark. Right after he had arrived home and was checking to make sure everything was squared away, they showed up. When the doorbell rang and Josh opened the door, Mark and Andrea greeted him with, "Good mornings!" and inquiries of how he slept. Josh answered politely and after a few moments of the usual small talk that Josh was beginning to expect from these two, the three of them left, with Mark carrying Josh's bag. Josh blinked in surprise when he recognized the limo and the driver standing nearby. Grinning at Josh, Andrea mentioned, "We thought you'd like to have someone you knew driving rather than having Mark drive. Mark's a wild lunatic on the road." Mark glared at Andrea and she started giggling. Mark struggled to hide his smile and failed, breaking out into laughter. "Oh, knock that off. You know what they say about women drivers!" Andrea raised an eyebrow and didn't reply, getting into the rear of the limo as Josh and Alex embraced tightly. Mark looked surprised and wisely said nothing, jumping into the back headfirst, causing Andrea to shout in surprise. Josh kicked the door shut and continued to hold Alex in the hug. "I'm glad it's you driving," Josh smiled. Letting go of Josh, Alex asked, "What's up, buddy? Why are you so glad to see me?" Looking away, Josh mumbled, "Nothing." Alex tolerantly smiled, "Needed a friend's hug?" "I had another dream of Scott," Josh explained. He went on describe what he had seen. "This is getting eerie. That's the 4th dream in the last, what, 2 weeks?" Alex asked. "Yeah, it is. It's always the same setting. I wonder what's going on." "I dunno. It sure sounds strange," Alex muttered. "Maybe you should talk to your therapist when you get back about this?" "Not another session with her," Josh groaned. "I hate therapy. I don't think it's helping anymore. I'm not going to make any more appointments." Alex's face assumed a worried expression, "Are you sure about that, Josh?" "Yes," Josh delivered with a tone of finality. Alex knew when to give in to Josh. Smiling at him, Alex opened the door. "Okay. If you don't want to, you don't want to. I just think you should talk to someone about these dreams. They're odd." After giving Alex another hug, Josh scrambled into the back and they were off on their way to Gettysburg.
