Chapter Two

Keith looked over the new circuit designs.

“Well, what do you think?”

“Do you want the truth, or will my usual BS do?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you’re too far ahead of me…of everyone. I’m sure they can duplicate this, and produce the chips, but anyone that did so, would do it, with a total lack of understanding.”

Colt looked extremely frustrated, as he had tried to explain his theories several times, to Keith. This time was harder, because parts of it, he just knew would work.

“I can’t explain it, any better than I have! I-I don’t know how to tell you! Mother did some of it. I wrote a program to analyze her performance, and to figure out how to improve her performance. After looking at the results, I had an idea, and I wrote a sim-simulation to prove it and it works! I don’t know why! It just does! I’ve tried to give you my theories as to why and-and you just-just-”

“Why is it so important to you that I really understand?”

“Because, nobody understands me! I feel so alone!” Colt burst into tears, and turned away.

Keith walked over to the boy and held him close. “Hey, this is not the real problem, is it? Arbor said you’ve been on edge for a week. So, what’s really bothering you?”

“Nothing,” he said as he tried to break free from Keith’s arms, “Please, let me go.”

“No! Not until you tell me what’s going on. I know it’s not because I don’t understand your designs, because that’s never bothered you before. So, my boy, you’re stuck right here, until you tell me what’s wrong.”

“Let me go!” he struggled to break free. Keith knew better than to give up. It was sort of a game Colt played. He’d pretend that nothing was wrong, and if you believed him and stopped insisting he communicate about his problem, the situation would just get worse.

“Colt! Knock it off! I’m getting pissed off with this nonsense. Now, just tell me what’s going on!” he said shaking the boy firmly.

Colt looked at Keith with his tear filled eyes. “I don’t want to be smart any more-I want to be normal.”

Keith smiled slightly, but just listened.

“Kids, my age, don’t like me. First, they think I’m cute, but then they ask me where I go to school, and when they find out that I’m working on a Ph.D., they think I’m weird. Arbor’s got tons friends, and is so popular…Why can’t I be like him? I never know what to say. Nobody around my age, wants to know about sorting algorithms, or shortest path algorithms or temporal spatial equations. The U students won’t touch me because I’m only thirteen.” Colt paused and looked at Keith, then sighed, giving Keith his ‘I’m about to get something big off my chest, that I’ve been withholding from you’ look. Keith just sat there waiting.

“Last week, I snuck out and went to another Frat party. I got plastered.” Colt watched to see Keith’s reaction, but Keith showed none, and he continued, “I thought maybe I’d wipe out a few billion brain cells. It didn’t work. I puked all over the place. Bob Owens, was so pissed; he said I couldn’t go again until I could hold my liquor better. And the next day, after I got over the hangover, I came up with a super new improvement to Mother. Am I grounded again?”

Keith nodded his head. “Absolutely, But I’m glad you were honest with me. Hmm, Is it girls or guys?”

Colt had a look of total fear. What would Keith say if told him he was into guys? Would he want him out of the house? How would Arbor feel about him being gay? He had thought about it before, but until now, it hadn’t been a real problem. Since he was eleven, he had had an attraction to boys. One boy was his main fantasy – Arbor Maine.

“Well?”

“Well, w-what?” replied Colt knowing full well that Keith was waiting for his previous question. “Oh, yeah I’ve been reading some research articles on nanotechnology. It’s really fascinating stuff. Scientists claim to have repaired brain damage, and restored the eyesight of blind animals, using a revolutionary treatment, based on nanotechnology. I could really get into that.”

“Colt, are you gay, straight or bi?” asked Keith.

“Gay,” mumbled Colt, as he cast his eyes to the floor.

Keith showed no reaction. He continued, “First of all, I want your solemn promise; no more alcohol. No more parties where you can get into drugs or alcohol. I mean it, I love you dearly, and it would kill me, to see you any less smart than you are.” Keith said quietly, and with the firmness of a father.

“I promise.”

Keith smiled slightly “Okay, luckily you’re extremely good looking, so there’s no problem there.” Colt beamed. “What we have to work on, then, is your communication skills and let’s see…First of all, you have to lead the conversation, and you have to find out, the things, ‘he’ is interested in. What are his likes and dislikes, what are his hobbies, interests, what does he like to do? That way you get to find out about him. He’ll like it, because, you’re showing interest in him. Then, out of those things that interest him, find something that you can be interested in too, and let him know it. Let him know that, that is something you’re interested in too.”

“But, what if he asks me about me? Do I say well, I’m a geek?”

“No. Change the subject or tell him about yourself, the parts that he would find interesting, according to what you’ve found out about him. And another thing, be polite and kind, and don’t use the word ‘Fuck’ as your favorite expletive!” Keith smiled.

“You really think this will work? No cussing and be interested in them?”

“Yep! I’m totally positive! It’s guaranteed.”

“Well, then, I’m going to do it! You’ve got the plans. I’ll see you later, Dude!” Colt turned and ran to the door.
