And now the story. ************* I was still staring out the window when I heard a knock on my door. "Come in," I said. "What are you doing home from school?" my mother said. I turned around my chair and looked at my mom with tears in my eyes. The right side of my face around my eye was swollen and turning black. I could see the concerned look on her face before I stared at the floor. "What on earth happened to you?" she said. "I had some problems at school today," I whispered, still staring at the floor. "Well, I guess you did. Do you want to talk about it or do I have to guess?" I could tell she was upset; she always said, "Fighting is always wrong." And missing school was even worse. She came over and put her finger under my chin and lifted my head to look in my eyes. She could now see the tears running down my face. Her expression softened and she said, "Oh, my God, what happened to you, who did this to you?" I just stood up and wrapped my arms around her. I cried softly on her shoulder for quite some time. She just rocked me back and forth like a small child. After I had recovered somewhat, I said, "I need to talk to you and Dad about this." She just nodded her head, turned, and left my room, closing my door. The next ten minutes were the longest of my young life. I read somewhere that 25 percent of all gay kids that come out to their parents are kicked out. Would they hate me? And what about school? What if they just sent me away to some boarding school? I could not take that. There was a soft knock on my door. Mom and Dad walked in. Dad approached me with a concerned look on his face. "Do you want to see a doctor, Son? You might have a concussion," my dad said with concern. "No, Dad, I think I am OK," I remarked, still dejected. "Well, Son, you really should put something on that eye," Dad replied. "I had an ice pack on it earlier," I explained. "Well, Son, your mom and I are here, and I have taken the rest of the day off. So take your time and tell us what happened," Dad said. My mind was going 100 miles per second. There was no way I was going to take my time. The only way I was going to get through this was just to let it spill out. "Dad, Mom, I'm gay. My best friend Doug found out yesterday and told the whole school. Later in gym some kids I did not see jumped me, hit me, and told me if I came back to school, I will get beat up every day until I quit school," I said as fast as I could. Then I looked back to the floor so I didn't have to see the disappointment in their eyes. The next thing I knew, both of my parents were hugging me. I started crying again and we stayed there in a three-way hug for about five minutes. Finally, Mom and Dad pulled away, with concern written all over their faces. "Mike, I need to talk to your mother for a few minutes. Don't worry, we will sort this out. Know that we love you and always will. Although this is a bit of a surprise, it is nothing we cannot handle together. Your mother and I will discuss the options available and I will come back up to talk with you in a few minutes," my dad said, looking me dead in the eye. I sat in my room for about the next 30 minutes. I really wasn't thinking of anything in particular. For some reason I felt at ease. Then the doorbell rang. I heard some talking downstairs, followed by a knock on my door. "Come in," I said. "Hi, Dr. Stewart," I exclaimed. Dr. Stewart was my doctor when I was a little boy. He had retired a few years ago. "What're you doing here?" I asked. "Well, young man, I am doing something you have probably never heard of. It is called a house call. Doctors today don't know what a house call is. But when your father was a little boy I used to come see him at home too. After a shot, I even kept lollipops in my little black bag just for him. I still make house calls on occasion for my special patients. And I think I might just have one or two lollipops left in my bag. Anyway, let me look at that eye. I heard you slipped and fell and hit your face against the ground or was it hit the ground against her face?" A smile crossed my face. I always liked Dr. Stewart. No matter how sick or bad I felt, he could always make me feel better. He closed the shade on my window and turned out all the lights. He reached in his bag and pulled out this gadget that looked like something he'd use to look in my ear. Instead, he told me to look at my dresser. Then he shined this little light in my right eye and then my left eye. Then he turned on the light. He told me to follow his finger with my eyes. He went left and right and up and down. Then he felt my cheek bone, I guess to see it if felt broken. He asked me if it hurt and I said some. He told me to keep ice on it and that by tomorrow my eye might be swollen shut. He smiled and said that I would be just fine. Should I feel dizzy, though, I should go to the hospital. He then informed me that my dad was waiting for me down in his study. I showed the doctor out and he winked at me and said, "Next time be more careful when you fall," with a knowing look on his face. I thanked him and said goodbye. He patted me on the shoulder and told me to hang in there. I walked into my Dad's study and could smell pizza! With everything that happened to me that day I forgot that I had not eaten since breakfast and it was already 4:00 PM. My dad smiled at me and said, "You hungry, Mike?" "Sure am," I responded. "Mike, I am not going to treat you like a child any more. You proved to me today that you have grown up and I think that we need to have a man-to-man talk. But before we talk, I just want to say that I love you very much more than you can know and I also respect you. Before we talk too much, I thought that we should eat. What did the doctor say?" he asked. "He said that I would be just fine." "Great, because I have a little something to go with the pizza," he replied, pulling a six-pack of BEER out from under the desk. "Your mother went to a friend's house for the evening and I thought that you and I could drink this beer and eat this pizza and have a little talk and sort this stuff out between us," Dad said, with a shit-eating grin on his face. He looked at me and laughed, "You can pick up your chin off the ground. If you're going to act like a man, I am going to treat you like one. I felt that we could talk more openly with just you and me. Your mom is fine with your revelation. We discussed many years ago how we would respond in case one of you kids turned out to be gay." He handed me a beer and said, "Whoever drinks their three beers the quickest does not have to clean out the basement this Saturday." I had never drunk anything before, and at first I did not like the taste. But by the time I got to the third one it did not taste so bad! After three beers and six slices of pizza, I felt real good. I was not really drunk but I sure had a good buzz. Dad decided that it was a tie and we would both clean out the basement, but he beat me by about 5 minutes. We laughed and joked around for about ten minutes and then Dad got serious. "Mike, what do YOU want to do about school? You know that you can go to any private school in the country. Or you could have in-home teaching. Or we could figure out a way for you to go back to school." "Dad, I do not want to leave home to go to school. Nor do I want to hide away here at home. You have always taught me to stand up for myself and to finish what I start. I want to finish school and graduate with my class. I can't run away. If I do, the bullies and bigots have won! But, I also can't defend myself. I am at a loss." "Mike, I have told you this story many times before. But, you're also going to get what Paul Harvey would call 'the rest of the story'. I am going to trust you to keep this between us. If what I am about to tell you gets out, it could ruin someone's life, so I am asking you to keep it between us. "When I was in the 2nd grade, some 4th graders were pushing me around on the playground. All of a sudden, two of the 4th graders were hanging about four inches off the ground. Sam Brown, the biggest kid at school and only in 2nd grade like me, had each 4th grader in one hand by the shirt and had picked them up off the ground." He said If they ever pushed or picked on me again, he would carry them right into the Principal's office. "After that I became best friends with Sam. We did everything together. He continued to grow and I was still the shortest one in the class. He was always there for me when I had a problem with other kids. Sam never ever really had to do anything to protect me because we were always together. Nobody wanted to upset Sam." "By the time we were in the 7th grade, Sam was 6' tall, whereas I was about 5'. His chest and arms had really filled out. He weighed about 200 pounds without an ounce of fat. "Now here is the part of the story that you have not heard before. At this time, we had both discovered masturbation and started doing it together. We went from doing it with each other to doing it to each other. Then we discovered the joys of oral sex and, if it were possible, we became even closer. However, it was not a romantic relationship. It was only release and helping a friend out. By the time Sam and I entered high school, he was 6' 4" tall and I was still just over 5'. His muscles were huge. He was not into sports but he liked to lift weights and run and swim. He said that he was not going to ruin his knees playing high school football. He did not like basketball either. He started dating most of the girls at our school. He did not get serious about any one girl and we continued having a sexual relationship right up until we graduated. "Although Sam had good grades and was smart, his parents could not afford to send him to college so he up and joined the Navy. He became a Navy Seal and served for 4 years. He had signed up for an education assistance program in the Navy and, when he got out, went to a local college. It's the same college where your mom teaches. And he got an Associates Degree in Law Enforcement. There he fell in love with a nice girl and got married. He then got a job as deputy sheriff, which he kept for 10 years until he was elected Sheriff. I think you can see how, if some of Sam's personal life got out, it cause great problems for him. "What if I was to recruit someone who could be for you like Sam was for me?" Dad explained. "You mean like a Bodyguard?" I exclaimed. "No, more than that. Sure, I want someone to protect you but I don't want him to protect you just because he is being paid to do it. I want someone who will also be your best friend, seeing as you just lost yours and are in need of one right now," Dad explained. "That sounds really good, Dad, but how do you plan to recruit that person, Dad?" I exclaimed. "You just let me worry about that. In the meantime, you will not be going to school. I will have your mother go to school and pick up your lessons and homework and do some home-teaching until I have found someone. Trust me, Mike, I will have no problem finding someone. I have made many friends over the years and it is time to call in some favors." "I wanted to make another point by telling you that story from my youth, Mike," Dad explained. "Just because you might fool around with other young men at your age does not necessarily mean that you will turn out a homosexual. Many young boys and young men fool around and turn out being straight. I know that quite some time ago you were fooling around with your cousin. I could tell by the way that you looked at each other. I could also tell by the way you two drifted apart 4 years ago that it had stopped." I was in shock! I must have turned as red as a tomato. "And you thought that you could get one over on your old man! Mike, I would like you to explain to me how you came to the conclusion that you are gay." I was still feeling the effects of the beer and I just started babbling away. I told him about all the books that I had read and all the web sites that I had visited. I told him about some of the love stories I had read and the Bible research I had done. I told him how nude girls did nothing for me, and how nude guys turned me on. I even told him about my fantasies. I then told him my conclusion, that the most important thing for a sexual relationship is love and commitment. I guess Dad knew what he was doing because he had effectively opened me up more than anyone ever did before. I rambled on for about an hour without Dad saying anything, just letting me pour out how I felt, smiling at me the whole time. After that I was suddenly very tired. I guess the effects of the beer had worn off and everything that I had been through the last 24 hours had taken its toll. Finally Dad spoke up, saying, "Mike, I am really impressed with the amount of research you have done to better understand yourself. At your age I was far less informed. They had this book called 'Everything You Want to Know About Sex But Are Afraid to Ask'. That was at the time like the sex Bible and all the kids read it. We did not have the same resources that you have today with the Internet and everything. I do want to continue this conversation at a later time but I can see that you have had enough for one day. Why don't you get an ice pack for your eye and go up to your room and get some rest and I will see you tomorrow. Your mother and I love you very much and together we will work this out. Also, I don't want you drinking unless you are under my supervision." I got an ice pack and went up to my room. I stripped off my clothes and laid down in bed and the next thing I knew it was morning.
