I have tried to answer all of them. ************* Friday was uneventful. I did homework most of the day. When Dad got home, he said that Mark had gone home to pack his things and see his mom. He will be back on Sunday night. He is going to stay in our guest room. I wish he could stay with me in my room. Saturday I got up at 7:00 and showered. I work on weekends at Dad's store from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. I am a bag boy until about 6:00 and then I restock shelves. This morning Dad and I are going to clean out the basement. He said that Mark needed some place to do weight lifting and beat up his punching bag. We worked quietly. When Dad sat down. I joined him. "Mike, you know that you are going to need to talk to your sister. She will be home for Thanksgiving in a month," he remarked. "I know that I need to talk to her, but why can't I just wait a little bit, say 100 years? By then she might be more open to the idea," I explained. "I understand your concern, she does have a temper like your mom, and you and she are not that close, but she is going to find out anyway. It is better for her to hear it from you than from someone else. Also, we need to explain to her the fact that Mark is here. I was thinking of inviting his mother up here for Thanksgiving. Sam says that she usually goes to his house with Mark on Thanksgiving. I thought that this year we could invite Sam's family over here too." "That would be great, Dad." "There are several other things that we need to talk about. First of all, I don't want you to feel jealous but I bought Mark a new truck yesterday. He needs to drive back and forth to his mom's house and we wanted him to be safe. You know that someday what is mine will be yours and your sister's. I have raised you to take care of yourself but Mark has had a really tough time of it. I wanted to do this for him." "I think that is great, Dad, and as long as I have your love, I could never be jealous of things you give someone else." "Also, Mike, this will be your last weekend working at the store for a while. I want you to spend your time with Mark, being a friend to him. I want you to go with him when he visits his mother. You know that after you finish college I would love for you to manage the store. I will continue to pay you the 100 dollars a week that you are making now. This will also give you time to concentrate on school. SAT's are coming up for you soon. I want to see you get into a good school." "To tell you the truth, I am going to miss working at the store. But if given the choice of working at the store or spending time with Mark, I would choose spending time with Mark." "If you want, you don't need to go into work today. It is up to you, Mike." "I would prefer to go in to work today. I have a lot on my mind and I think keeping busy is the best thing for me." "That is fine, Mike. Why don't we get back to work, and finish up the basement." We finished up the basement and I got ready and went to work. It was a busy day and before I knew it, it was 9:00 o'clock. That night I thought about what Dad said earlier, and was so happy I had the dad that I had. I could see that we were as much help for Mark as Mark was for me. I really hoped that he would become a complete part of our family, and I could become a part of his. Little Mikey needed some attention because he was at attention. I imagined Mark holding me in his big arms and went off in no time. I cleaned up my mess and drifted off to sleep. On Sundays I sleep-in and get up about 9:00 o'clock. Today was no exception. Then we had a good breakfast and went to church. We sat in the middle of the church and the service started. We sang hymns and went through the announcements. My dad had been going to this church ever since he was a little boy. The Pastor got up to make his sermon. His name is Pastor Simpson and he has a wife and two children, a daughter several years older than me and a son one year older than me. He started out reading from the Bible about the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. He read other Old Testament verses about homosexuality. He looked at me the whole time. I was sinking lower and lower. He said that, just as God hated homosexuality then, he hated it now. He said that God created AIDS to kill the homosexuals in the world today. At that point Dad grabbed my hand and my mother's hand and he stood up. The pastor stopped preaching and everyone looked at us. Dad led us out of the church. Someone sitting in the church, with a heart of stone from years of hate, was pleased. He thought to himself, 'We got that faggot out of our school and now we got him out of church too. Next we need to get him and his queer-loving family out of this town next.' We rode home in silence. When we got home, Dad wanted to talk. "Although I have been going to that church more than 40 years and am a member of the board, I am not going back. I believe in what Jesus said, 'That he who is without sin can cast the first stone.' 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 'Treat others as you want to be treated.' And 'Judge others and you will be judged.' I will not go to a church where they preach hate. I bought the property next to the church and was going to give it to them for their building project. Lord only knows that old church needs to be bulldozed down and rebuilt. Tomorrow I am going to resign as board member, and a member of that church." "Honey, I was ready to leave the minute he started preaching, but I was waiting for you," my mom replied. "How do you feel, Son?" my dad asked. "I don't want to think about it right now. I just want to eat something and go to work and keep myself busy," I answered. And I did keep myself busy. The only thing I could think about was that Mark was coming tonight. I was so excited. My knight in shining armor. I got home a little after 9:00 o'clock and Mark was not there yet. I had a quick dinner of leftover spaghetti and was just finishing when Mark arrived. "I'm sorry that I am in so late, but I stopped by my uncle's house and Uncle Sam gave me a lecture on standard Police procedures for the fourth time. He also showed me how to use the wire he wants me to wear. Mike, could you help me unload the truck?" he asked. "Sure," I replied. "I will help too", my dad stated. We went out and I saw his truck. It was so cool. He opened the tailgate and I tried to pick up a box and I could not move it. "I will get that one," he grinned. "It is weights for my bar-bell." We moved everything into the living room and then moved it either into the basement or the guest room. When we finished, it was almost 11:00 o'clock. Mark said that he needed to talk to us for a few minutes. Apparently my Dad had also offered to buy his mom a new car. "Mr. Stevens, I talked to my mom and, although she was floored with your generous offer, she said that you have done enough already. She also said that her car is working just fine and, perhaps once she gets to know you and her car stops working, she might take you up on your offer. She said that she is also looking forward to meeting you next weekend, Mike." "Please don't call me Mr. Stevens, Mark. It makes me feel so old; call me Greg. While I need to do something for her as she will be looking after my son a couple of days a week, how about every Friday you stop at the grocery store before you leave town and I will load you up with some groceries. It is the least I can do and I insist." "That sounds fair but I don't think that I can call you Greg. It just does not feel right. Perhaps I call you Mr. S and Mrs. S to be less formal, but I have been taught to treat adults with respect." "That's fine, Mark. It is late and you have a long day tomorrow and I have one more surprise for you." "I am not sure how many more surprises I can take. You remember what happened the last time, Mr. S.," Mark replied. "Well, this is kind of a surprise for both you and Mike." Dad walked into his study and came out with a laptop computer. "This is to help you with your school work, Mark, and to keep in touch with us on weekends. I am sure that Mike can show you how to use it." "Gee, that is great. Our school district is too poor to afford computers and I really need to develop some computer skills." "Great, well, I think it is time to head for bed. See you tomorrow, guys." We exchanged goodnights and I went up to my room and stripped down to my shorts and crawled into bed. I had a stressful day and as soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep. I woke up the next morning and needed to pee really bad. I had a piss hard-on that could pound nails making a tent in my shorts. I walked into the bathroom and forgot that we had company. Mark was standing there with a towel around his waist, combing his hair. I stopped and stared; he looked like a Greek god! He turned and saw me and smiled. Then he looked down at my shorts and I remembered that I was sporting morning wood or you could say steel! I turned red and covered myself with my hands. "No need to be embarrassed, Mike, I have the same problem in the morning too. If we are going to be practically brothers, we are going to see each other like this all the time. I just got done running three miles and got my shower, so I will let you do your thing. See you tonight, Mike." He ruffled my hair and left me to do my business. By the time I finished and got dressed, he had gone to school. I spent the day doing schoolwork. I also went outside to rake leaves. Mark came home and did his homework. At dinner that night he talked about his day. "Classes were not that different from my old high school. Some of the jocks from the football team approached and wanted to know what sports I was into. When I told them reading, writing, and arithmetic, they did not look happy and left me alone. Some of the girls made goo goo eyes at me but I just ignored them. There was an assembly and the principal announced that the school board had adopted a zero-tolerance policy regarding bullying, intimidation, or violence in an attempt to force someone out of school. He said that this has happened a number of times and if you try to deny someone's right to get an education, you will be denied your right to go to school." Later that night I showed him how to use his computer. He learned really fast. I showed him how to get online. Then I showed him how to do e-mail. Then I showed him the Internet and some cool sites. I went to Nifty stories and showed him a true story called 'Outted in High School.' I told him it was about a guy our age who was outted by his father to the whole school. I told him it would help him understand what I am going through. And then I left him to read. He told me later that he really liked the story. The next day went about the same as the day before except I did not have a morning encounter with Mark. At dinner that night we talked about my return to school the next day. Mark was not to let me out of his sight but not to get too close either. Needless to say, I did not sleep well that night. The next day I got up and showered. I looked in the mirror and my eye was much better but it was still black. After getting dressed, I went downstairs and found Mark already eating breakfast. He said that he was going to follow me to school. I pulled into the parking lot and Mark pulled in right behind me. I walked in, looking at the ground. I did not want to make eye contact with anyone. I put my books in my locker and made my way to my first class. I passed by Doug and looked at him with a caring look and he just looked away. My morning went without incident. For lunch I sat alone and so did Mark. That afternoon I got called a few names and a senior bumped into me and told me to watch where I was going. Yeah, right! When I left for the day, Mark was following about 10 feet behind me. I walked around a corner and ran into 6 football jocks. One of them grabbed me and said that I was warned and now I was going to get my ass kicked but good. Mark walked around the corner and asked, "What is happening?" Ed, the captain of the football team and obviously the leader of this gang, told him, "Mind your business." Mark said, "I am making it my business." Ed said, "Ok, we are going to beat up this faggot until he is half dead. We don't want faggots in our school. Do you want to help?" "Let him go!" Mark instructed. "Who is going to make us? What are you, some kind of faggot lover or maybe a faggot yourself? Leave now or we will beat the shit out of you too," Ed hissed. "Okay, that is it." Mark pulled out a badge. "I am a deputy sheriff and you are under arrest for assault, and extortion." "What cereal box did you get that out of? Kick his ass, guys," Ed shouted. One of the jocks threw a punch at Mark and Mark grabbed his wrist with his right arm and hit the back of his elbow with his left arm. I heard a snap like a broom handle snapping and his arm was bent the wrong way. The next guy tried to tackle him and Mark picked him up and threw him about 5 feet and he landed hard on his back. Then Mark swung his leg around and caught another guy across the face with his boot, shattering his jaw. Mark punched the next guy in the collarbone and I heard another snap. The next guy tried to kick him and he grabbed his leg and kicked him in the kneecap breaking his leg. The only one left was Ed. He pulled out a hunting knife and said, "Now you're going to die." Mark calmly reached into his backpack and pulled out a 45 automatic, took the safety off, cocked the hammer, and said, "You are under arrest for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon. DROP THE KNIFE NOW!" Ed complied. I could hear police sirens. "ON THE GROUND, FACE DOWN, HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK." Ed complied and Mark put his knee behind Ed's neck and cuffed him. Then he cuffed the others except the ones with broken bones. He then pulled a radio out of his backpack and said, "Officer needs assistance, six in custody, also need a ambulance." Then he came over to me and asked, "Are you all right, Mike?" At a time like this actions speak louder than words. Without even thinking I hugged him and he hugged me back. I did not care who was looking. Actually quite a few were looking, including someone with a heart hard as a rock from years of hate. He thought to himself, 'It did not work and half are gone. We will need to finish this somewhere else. We need to find out everything there is to know about these two.'
