Aaron said as he fitfully tried to put on his shoe "I just remembered that Tobey wanted me to go golfing with him and his dad." I said, feeling torn about what I really wanted to do. "Well" Aaron said, still fighting with his shoe "Let's go, we'll make it a foursome." "Honey, try untying them first, it might help". I said Aaron looked up at me and his hair fell into his face. He blew it out of his eyes and smiled at me. He untied his shoe and slipped it on his foot. "Look, how simple things work when you do them the right way." I said with mock sarcasm. "yeah, yeah yeah" Aaron mumbled as he put his other shoe on without untying it. "Aaron, you can't come golfing with us." "Jimmy is going also and that makes four already." "They won't let us go with five." "Oh." Aaron said obviously disappointed. "I'm sorry honey, I can cancel...." I said "No, no go hang out with your friends, really I'm alright." "I should spend some time at home anyway, I'm never there." He said "Ok, I'll go then." "But I promise to miss you every second until I get back and be miserable without you there." I said feeling really bad that he couldn't come. Aaron walked over to me, grabbed me by the ears and pulled me into a quick kiss. "Call me when you get home k" he said and he trotted out the door. "Aaron, wait!" I yelled at him as he went through the door. Aaron spun around on his heel and came back in the door with both eyebrows raised and eyes open wide. "What?" he said, sounding somewhat irritated. "I just wondered if you were going to stay here tonight, considering tomorrow is the first day of school and all, this is kind of our last night of freedom." "hmmmm..." Aaron squinted his eyes and brought his hand to his chin as though he were channeling Rodin's statue "The Thinker". "come on..." I whined impatiently. Aaron smiled and his eyes darted my way. "I couldn't think of anywhere I would rather be or anyone I would rather be with on our, as you said, last night of freedom." "Good" I said and broke out into a full grin myself. "Now, call your friends and then call me the moment you get back. I am leaving now." Aaron said as he walked out the door. "I'll miss you..." I yelled out the door after him. "You too" I heard him yell back from the distance. I laughed and smiled to myself. Then I grabbed the phone and called Tobey. I don't know what it is about golfing that I find so exciting and yet peaceful at the very same time. There's something about getting together with the just the guys and rolling around the beautiful landscaping in a little cart and hitting balls with sticks that I just completely love. It also helps out that Tobey's dad is pretty cool and he always lets us have one of his beers, well I guess it's more of a don't ask don't tell policy with the alcohol, but he's pretty cool none the less. He always wants us to call him Mitch, but we can't bring ourselves to call him anything other than Mr. D. I'm not exactly a scratch golfer, but I'm pretty decent. Tobey got me hooked on golfing about a year ago and we go as often as we can afford to, usually I don't have the money, but Tobey pays. We decided to split off and play team skins. It was Jimmy and I against Tobey and his dad. We tend to get a little bit competitive when we play skins, and coming up to the last hole we were tied. My game had been off all day as I was daydreaming and thinking about the events of the last few days and anticipating the evening, but I had hit on the green in one on the last hole par three. Tobey and his dad had both hit, and their best shot was a shank that Tobey hit off into the right edge of the rough surrounding the green. We had it in the bag. I putted and ended up about 3 feet from the cup, much closer than the shot that Jimmy had hit which flew off the end of the green (Jimmy sucks at putting), I knew that if we were going to win this thing it was going to be in my hands. Tobey's dad had chipped up an amazing shot that put him about 4 feet from the cup and shooting for par, although the angle they had was much harder than mine. Jimmy once again shot the ball off the course so it was up to me to finish off the game. I had the entire group circling me waiting for me to make the shot. I surveyed the green, lined up my shot and.....it lipped out! I dropped to my knees in mock devastation and buried my face in my hands decrying my shit luck. I don't mind losing really, I actually do enjoy the game, but losing to Tobey is just painful. He goes out of his way to make it extremely painful and this was no exception to that rule. Tobey surveyed his shot, lined up his putt and then turned his head the other way and sunk the shot. He had made it without looking and made sure that I knew it. "Ooooh Tuck, that has to suck!" Tobey said laughing and high fiving Mr. D. "Fuck!" I grumbled barely audibly. "Finished him off with the Tom Cruise look away dad!" Tobey was bragging to his dad. The Tom Cruise look away, for those who don't know, is from the movie the color of money, where he is a pool shark and finishes off someone by shooting and looking away. It's a horribly painful way to lose at anything. "Whatever" "You're an ass." "Are we going now?" I said with mock irritation. We all laughed and headed out for home. I was getting excited and nervous about what was in store for me for the evening. "Hi Momma!" I nearly yelled as I came crashing through the front door. My mom was washing dishes and listening to music in the kitchen. She turned and smiled at me. "Hello son, how was golf?" "Did you score a lot of goals?" she said as she walked over to me and attacked me wiping her soapy hands all over my shirt and face. "God mom, you are such a nerd, you don't score goals!!" I said through my laughter. "Leave me alone!" My mom just laughed and went back to her dishwashing "Tuck, what are your plans for the evening?" My mom said, her back turned to me I had started flipping through one of the million mail order catalogs that had found a way to stack up on the table. "Oh I don't know, probably just hang out with Aaron, is it ok if he stays the night?" I said trying to sound completely natural. "You're asking if he can stay now?" "What's that all about, usually it's an assumed reality" My mom seemed inquisitive so I quickly changed the subject to deflect any further questions on the matter, I was good at this. "Oh look mom; it's that mop I saw on TV the other day. It sucks up everything, you can order it from here only $29.99!" "Oh please Tucker." My mom said, rolling her eyes "you believe everything you see in those infomercials...we aren't buying it." "Anyway Tucker, I am going to stay at Tom's tonight." "You going to be ok here by yourself?" My mom was so funny. She'd been dating this guy for a while, I was a bit guarded when it came to him, but my mom really liked him, so tried to get along with him as best as I could. My mom was worried that I was going to get upset that she's dating I think. She pretends it's about leaving me home, but she really wanted me to say I'm ok with her moving on from dad. I know this, but it's the little game we play with each other. "Yes mother, I think I can handle it." I said "Have a good night, tell Tom I said hello." My mother beamed with a huge smile and I smiled back at her. "Make yourself dinner and I will see you tomorrow after school" She said as dried off her hands and put on her coat. "Bye mom" I said and gave her a little peck on the cheek as she walked out the door. I grabbed the phone and dialed Aaron's number "Hello" Aaron's little brother answered. "Hey Mikey, where's Aaron?" I asked "Hold on a sec......" I could hear him yelling in the background "Hey Aaron, it's your fuckin' shadow" "Hey!" a breathless Aaron answered. "Jesus Aaron, your brother acts more and more like a bastard every time I talk to him." I said annoyed. "Yeah, I know, I think he's spending too much time with Ma, you know how she is" Aaron said sadly. I felt really bad. I knew that Aaron loved his family and I think he felt guilty about not spending more time with Mikey and leaving him to deal with his mother all alone. "I'm sorry Aaron, I didn't mean that." I said apologetically "Don't sweat it Tuck" Aaron said and then he started to whisper "I miss you". I broke out into a grin. "I miss you too, come over!" "Ok, I will, give me about an hour or so, there are some things I want to get, ok" he said. "What are you going to get?" I asked. "It's a surprise!" he said "Aaron, you know how much I hate to be surprised!" I said This was actually true, I hated surprises, I was a complete and utter planner and surprises don't allow for planning on the part of the surprised. I know, I know, I'm no fun. "Well..." Aaron said "I am really hoping that you'll like this one." "Fine" I said, defeated. It was obvious that he was excited about doing whatever it was he was doing for me. "Just hurry ok, I want to kiss you right now!" "Me too" he said "bye" "Bye" I said. I laid the phone back on the rest, leaned back against the wall and started chewing on my lip. I was nervous and excited again. A night alone with him was all I could think about.
