THE SILENT VIOLIN CHAPTER 12 Arkady watched Bastian and Aiden get up from their table and leave out the side door of the cafeteria. He tapped his chin thoughtfully and calmly threw the remainder of his lunch in the trash. He trailed after them, stepping into the cool winter air just in time to see Bastian disappear around a corner. He quickened his steps and cautiously approached the corner. Harmony sighed with relief as Ms. Coolidge banged the gavel to close this session of Student Council. As sophomore class president she didn't have a lot of weight on the council and she didn't feel strongly about any of the measures brought up today but attending was a learning experience nonetheless. She stretched in her chair and slid her notebook into her knapsack. If she was lucky, she could cut across the grounds and catch Dean before he left the cafeteria. She managed to avoid Heather Marks, the chatty treasurer who inevitably would talk her ear off if Harmony let her and slipped out the door. Aiden turned the corner and pulled Bastian with him against the wall, smiling and breathing heavy. He drew Bastian closer and kissed him passionately on the mouth. Bastian leaned into him, opening his mouth unconsciously allowing Aiden to slip his tongue inside. Their tongues slid across one another like warm wet velvet touching teeth and lips and tongue. Bastian pushed Aiden hard against the wall, willing their bodies to become one through passion. Aiden closed his eyes. His pale lashes cast a soft shadow across his freckled cheeks. For an instant, Bastian felt a moment of panic; that Aiden's eyes would open and be a brilliant blue. The panic caused him to hesitate in the kiss and Aiden pulled back opening his eyes. Bright green met silvery-gray. "What's wrong?" Aiden asked, a concerned look on his face. Bastian shook his head. "Something is wrong, Bastian. You stopped kissing me. Let me know what's wrong and maybe I can help." Bastian took out his notepad and wrote: "Just a dream. I'm okay now." Aiden read the note and then looked quizzically at Bastian. "Okay." He didn't sound very convinced but let the matter drop when Bastian leaned forward to kiss him sweetly on the lips. Bastian pulled back with a smile on his lips. Harmony delicately cleared her throat, causing the two lovers to fly out of each other's arms. Bastian had a scared, shocked look on his face. Aiden, on the other hand, looked ready to battle: his hands curled into fists and his muscles rigid with rage. A random thought passed through Harmony's head that Aiden expected to get into a fight and with his broad shoulders and long limbs probably had a good advantage to start with. The anger radiated from him in waves and she held up her hands to ward him off and show him she meant no harm. Bastian turned slightly to place his hands on Aiden's arms. Aiden seemed to deflate. The anger disappeared to reveal the hurt, insecure young man he was. At first she hadn't recognized Aiden McKennough without his trademark Goth makeup and clothing but as sophomore class president she tried hard to know all her classmates. Tall and broad shouldered but slender, Aiden's freckled complexion was a surprise after the constancy of white base and black eyeliner. "I didn't mean to intrude, Aiden, Bastian, but I thought it best to stop you before you continued. This isn't the best place to do that, considering the school's rule on public displays of affection." She let the hint of a grin quirk her dark red lips. "Fuck the school," Aiden spat angrily. Harmony recoiled from his anger. Bastian's hands tightened on Aiden's arms and he turned his penetrating gaze to her. Bastian leaned back against Aiden and brought his hands up to talk to her. His fingers flashed in familiar patterns. "I'm not going to say anything. I wouldn't want to hurt you, Bastian, and that means I'm not going to do anything to hurt you either, Aiden. Hurting you would hurt Bastian, that much is obvious." Aiden glared at her balefully. Bastian's fingers flashed again. Harmony watched and then looked up at Aiden. She hesitated a moment, and Bastian gestured impatiently. "He wants me to tell you to trust me. That you have to let other people in too," she said hesitantly. Aiden looked down in surprise at Bastian who nodded affirmatively. He looked at Harmony with renewed insight. Another piece of his plan clicked into place. He sighed. "I'm sorry, Harmony. I hope I didn't frighten you. It's just, well, you know," he finished lamely. Harmony nodded and smiled. "No worries." The bell signaling the end of 4th period sounded, cutting off what she was going to say next. "Well, just a word to the wise. I have to get to class. I'll see you in Orchestra, Bastian. I have to get to Chemistry." Harmony waved and headed off towards the Larian Building. "Harmony, wait up, I have class there too," Aiden called after her. She paused and turned around. Aiden quickly pecked Bastian on the mouth. "Love you, I'll see you in 8th period, maybe." With that, Aiden gathered his backpack and ran to join up with Harmony. Bastian shook his head bemusedly, picked up his messenger back, and rounded the corner, running smack into a solidly built chest. "Thanks for waiting, Harmony," Aiden said slightly breathlessly from his short sprint. He fell into step next to her. "No problem." They walked in awkward silence for a short time before Harmony idly asked, "So you really love him?" "What's it to - um, sorry, yeah. I do," Aiden swallowed his anger. "I didn't know you knew him. Where did you meet him? You're a sophomore, he's a freshman." "Well we were friends ten years ago, before his accident. But we became reacquainted in Mr. Simmons's US History." At Harmony's incredulous look he blushed and mumbled, "I failed it last year. Lucky me got him again." "Oh, I didn't know, sorry. So you knew Bastian before he lost his voice?" Aiden nodded. "He's a nice guy. Everyone who's met him seems to like him." Aiden turned slightly green. "What? Oh, not like that. Well, some like that. But if you two are an item, I can dissuade the others. Are you an item?" "Umm, I guess so. I mean I don't think either of us is ready to face the outside world yet but we haven't really talked about it." He paused a few moments. "This is bizarre talking to you about this. About me and Bastian." Harmony shrugged. "I'm your class president," she offered by way of explanation. Aiden barked a laugh. "I can hardly picture Jeff White doing the same." Harmony laughed as well picturing the husky super-macho wrestler talking easily with anyone outside of his traditional masculine world. "Actually, Harmony, I wanted to ask you something." He lapsed into silence. "Yes?" she prompted. She couldn't imagine what he wanted her to do, other than keep quiet about what she'd witnessed. "Hey there, Bastian," Arkady said in a subdued voice. His cheeks were flushed from the cold and he had his hands stuffed in his jeans pockets. Bastian smiled and waved hello and moved to step around him. Arkady sidestepped to block his path. Nervously, Bastian took a step backwards. "Can I ask you something?" Arkady looked up now; his blue eyes bright with unshed tears. Aiden sat down in the desk-chair with a sigh of relief. He had been somewhat surprised that Harmony had agreed to his request so readily but was incredibly happy. He tucked the slip of paper containing her phone number into his pocket and sat back as Mr. Diamato defined a slew of unusual vocabulary words. Aiden actually enjoyed Mr. Diamato's class. He was considering becoming a Literature major and becoming a teacher once he decided on where to go to college. It was a secret ambition of his and one which Mr. Diamato's constant encouragement made him strive to achieve. He wasn't sure how his parents would accept him becoming a Literature major. His father wasn't that big on the more liberal arts-y side of learning, but perhaps with the accident he would accept Aiden's decisions. Aiden could only hope. Class continued uneventfully; most of the words Aiden had encountered before in his voracious reading. During study hall he would ask Mrs. Witt if he could go to the library. Harmony had recommended several books to help him in his plan. Mr. Diamato then challenged them to find two synonyms for each word for their homework, and then use all the words in a short story. Aiden had the assignment half completed before the bell rang. As he stood up to leave, Mr. Diamato waved him over. Mr. Diamato was a short balding man with a thick black beard and dancing green eyes. "I'm very glad you have stopped with the Gothic stuff, Aiden. Not that I disapprove of being different, but I could tell that you weren't happy with who you are. I don't know why the sudden change and I won't ask but I wanted to say, I approve." Aiden was speechless for a moment but quickly recovered his aplomb. "Things are better. I've found some constants in my life. At least I hope they're constants." Aiden smiled brightly. Mr. Diamato grasped his shirt in mock surprise. "You - you smiled! I think that's the first time I've ever seen anything else but a glower on that face of yours," he kidded. Aiden grinned and stuck out his tongue. "I have to get going to my next class. Thanks for telling me that though. You're the first person who looked like I was possessed because I looked like everyone else." "I don't see why. Don't let them get to you, Aiden. You know who you are inside and they'll know soon enough." With those words of wisdom, Mr. Diamato ushered Aiden out of the classroom. Vincent Diamato sat back in his chair with a sigh. Aiden was one handsome kid. Smart to boot. Glad he's got his self-confidence back. Cindy Turring came into the room and interrupted his ruminations with her cheerful chatter. "Good afternoon, Cindy." Arkady's full lips pressed insistently against his and Bastian froze in shock. What kind of question is this? The messenger back slipped out of nerveless fingers and his knees began to shake. Bastian couldn't help but wonder at the differences between Arkady's and Aiden's kisses. Arkady's lips were warm, soft, and smooth and his breath smelled of mint. Arkady pushed gently against him and Bastian found himself pushing back. Frightened of the possibilities Bastian jerked backwards, breaking the kiss. "Oh God, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Bastian. I didn't mean -" Arkady began. Tears fell freely down his cheeks. "I guess I know the answer then. I -" Arkady turned and ran from Bastian. Confused, Bastian picked up his messenger bag and made his way to class. _______________ To Be Continued. Again. I'm SOOO sorry for the delay and the brevity of this chapter. But at least it's here now!!
