The Geeks II
The Year Begins
The Washington High Computer club had grown to over one hundred students from all grades. Josh Keller, had been elected the president of the club in his junior year and would probably be re-elected in his senior year.
Everyone in the school knew who Josh Keller and Mark Hathaway were. And although they had never publicly announced their relationship everyone knew they were boyfriends. A few didn't like it but were not about to voice or show their objections.
Today Josh would be speaking to the student body a few days before summer break
"People who knew me -- my mom and dad knew me to be a real chatter box until I started having these feelings. I knew I was different from other kids. I began to feel like a stranger in a strange land at first but I found I was out of control. I was becoming what I had feared most. I always knew my parents would accept me, but kids my age. HA!"
"Life went on. I would get to school and immediately want to hide. Know what I mean. You know just become invisible." Many in the audience nodded their head.
"It was the hardest thing I had to accept about myself ever. My conclusion after long, long deliberation was I was born this way. I finally had to accept that I was just the way I was because it was the real me. Nobody made me this way. I was just this way and I knew there was no denying it." Josh dramatically paused, looked away for a moment. The audience drew quite.
Then with his patent smile Josh said proudly, "Yep! I admit it. I am -- hmm I am 100% geek!" Josh laughed and so did the audience.
"Ha-ha, I bet you thought I was going to say gay. No I accepted that pretty easily. But I hated being considered a geek."
"My aunt made me join the Geek Club (that's what I called it but it's really the Washington High Computer Club)."
"The good part of joining the Geek Club was meeting Mark and making some great friends, Malcolm Jones, Delsine Jones and Mandy Cordell. It was through them that I finally accepted the fact that was a geek."
"And now that I have publicly announced that I am a geek, I know there are a few of you out there that wonder am I one too?"
"Well, here are some questions you can ask yourself that might help you decide."
"After telling a joke to your friends do you say LOL? If so you might be a geek."
"LOL means laugh out loud. ROTFL means rolling on the floor laughing. BRB means be right back. Oh there's a bunch of them. Well, if you find yourself explaining what they mean -- you might be a geek."
"The preceding is geek humor and if you laughed and snorted through your nose you might be a geek." <laughter>
"If your computer is in your bedroom you might be a geek."
"If you argue with your friends over which is better Linux or Windows you might be a geek."
"If you even know what Linux is you might be a geek."
"And finally if you try to think up clever and what you think are funny `you might be a geek' jokes then you might be a geek!"
"Thank you! Have a great summer!" exclaimed Josh as he started to leave the stage, "See you in September!"
Josh got another standing ovation as he took his seat in the audience next to Mark.
After that Mandy Cordell one of Mark's best friends called him, "Mr. Super Geek." To which Josh responded, "I can't help it that I love bits and bytes more than boys or girls with the exception of Mark. Luckily Mark is a geek too so we spend hours beating our ..."
"Don't go there," said Delsine.
"Go where? I was only going to say computer keyboards," smiled Josh.
"Yeah right," laughed Delsine.
The two boys have their driver's license and a car they call `Thelma Ann Louise'.
"Why did you name your car that?" asked Mandy.
"Ugh! Idiot! It was just one of best movies EVER. Gosh!" replied Josh in his best Napoleon Dynamite voice.
"We call her `Thelma Ann Louise' because the car is such a bitch to get started and we both liked the movie Thelma and Louise. We name our computers too," says Mark.
"I have a wii I call `Jules' and playstation I call `Nuts'. I like telling people that Mark's got my Nuts and he really likes playing with my Jules too!" laughed Josh.
"Mark's laptop is called `Dick'. I use his Dick a lot!" laughed Josh snorting through his nose on purpose.
Mandy rolled her eyes. "I hate it when you do that."
"Acting like Napoleon Dynamite. It is so not you." They both laughed.
School being out meant their group would be split up as Malcolm and Delsine would be off to South Carolina to spend the summer with their grandparents, Josh and Mark got summer jobs working for at a high tech company called Uptech. They sell network testing equipment and such.
It was the first day of school. Mark and Josh arrived at school by bus as Thelma decided to be a bitch this morning or Mark forgot to put gas in her. Either way, it was the yellow limo service.
As they stepped off the bus Josh looked around and finally spotted Mandy in the crowd of students. She was with a boy who looked like he wanted to stand behind her and hide. Malcolm and Delsine were there also. Josh continued to look around as that made there way over to the others.
Sure enough Josh spotted Jefferies, the Bruski brothers surrounded by half the football team.
"YO! JOHN!" shouted Mark barely getting their friend John's attention.
Josh spotted Mandy a little ahead of him with a young looking boy, "Hey! Girl! Sup?" he hollered.
"Josh! Mark! Hey, we just got back home yesterday. Oh, this is Preston, he's my cousin, he's going to be a freshman this year. He's got Becker for homeroom and math."
"Glad to meetcha, Preston. I'm Josh Keller and this is my boyfriend and partner in crime, Mark Hathaway."
"You're, you're gay?" Preston said timidly.
"Yep, we are a very happy couple. Not problem for you, is it?" Mark asked.
He shook his head `no' and blushed.
"Well?" Mandy said to Preston. Preston blushed and looked at the ground and shook his head `no'. "Well, you know they won't care and besides if you ever want to get that laptop to work they are the only two people I know that could probably fix it for you."
He shook his head `no' again.
"So, are you gay too," stated more than asked Mark.
Preston shook his head no but then gave an affirmative nod.
"You don't have to worry about it," said Mark.
"Worry about what?" boomed John Jefferies voice.
Preston blushed and then turned pale at the sight of Big John.
"He's gay," said Mark matter-of-factly.
I rolled my eyes, "Mark!" Josh said testily. Preston looked like he was about to cry.
Big John grabbed Preston threw him over his shoulder and ran to a quiet place away from all the other kids then set Preston down. Preston closed his eyes tight and waited for the pounding which never came.
"You okay?" asked John, "I'm sorry if I scared you. I swear if I didn't love Mark so much I'd pound his ass into the ground for outing you like that. Sometimes the geek just doesn't think."
Preston said nothing.
"Look if it helps, I'm gay too. I'm sorry I just thought you looked like you were about to cry and I know I hate crying in front of people. I just felt like I had to get you out of there. Are you ok?"
Mark, Mandy and Josh approached.
Mark immediately walked over to Preston. "Dude, I'm sorry."
"I didn't want to be outed, now everybody will know," mumbled Preston, "It's all gonna start again."
"What's going to start again?"
"Getting beat up."
"Uh-uh, nope, no way, if anyone so much as looks at you cross ways I'll pound their ass into the ground so far they'll be speaking Chinese!" roared John, "I've got your back covered."
"And then some," snickered Josh.
"Shut up Keller," said John.
"Dude, not only have you got Big John on your side, but the whole football team -- nobody messes with the Washington High Marauders."
"He's right, John is co-captain," said Mandy.
"Yeah, so you got the whole team on your side," commented Mark.
"Not that the whole team is gay, they just like John's fat ass," laughed Josh.
In one swift movement Josh found himself precariously above John's head. "I take it back! Please John, Josh is not a football." He half laughed and half yelled.
"My ass is not fat," said John, "It's -- big and muscular!"
"You're right! You have a beautiful muscular ass!" Josh laughed and John put him down. They were laughing and Preston was at least smiling.
"So, you cool, little dude?" asked John.
"Yeah, I'm cool. Thanks," replied Preston shyly.
"If anybody gives you shit including this asshole."
"Hey!" said Josh indignantly.
John laughed, "Really, anybody gives you shit let me know and I will handle it. See ya around."
"Now let's get down to the important stuff, Preston," Josh said, "What this about a laptop?"
Mandy rolled her eyes.
"Bitch!" Josh said to her, "Okay, okay, I'm a geek! I am a happy geek so deal with it Mandy!"
Preston laughed. He had a cute laugh.
"Well, I bought it at a swap meet just before we came here. It looked like a real bargain. But the guy who sold it to me was gone when I went back to the booth cuz I had second thoughts -- why would a guy sell me a $5000 laptop for $300. God! I am so stupid! It's got some sort of security system and it won't boot up without the right password."
"Did you try removing the cmos battery?" asked Mark.
"Yeah, for a whole day. It still does the same thing."
"Well, bring it over after school okay?"
"Cool, what's Becker like?"
"He's cool. We were mortal enemies for a while but he's a good guy and we're friends now. Half my blood is his. I needed blood and he had the same blood type so -- I sort of owe him my life."
"Oops! There's the bell. We'll walk you to class," volunteered Mark.
