His eyes drooped and his mouth was in a slight frown. Upset, he just tried to find a snow flake he could watch float to the ground. "You're going to enjoy your new home, Aidan." His father said from the front seat. He turned to look in the rear view mirror where he had a perfect view of his father's face. "I doubt it, Dad. I don't understand why we have to move anyway, I mean, couldn't we have just stayed in Florida?" He asked his father. "New York will be better for us, Aid." His brother turned around to look at him from the passenger seat. "And who knows, maybe you'll finally get a boyfriend." Aidan mocked laughing in his brother's direction and waited for him to start bickering again with their father before looking out the window once more. New York, where snow fell in winter and the only warm days were in late spring through mid-summer. Aidan didn't understand why New York was the chosen place. He wanted California, Texas, Alabama for God's sake, but his father had to choose. His eyes closed slightly and he drifted off to sleep, remembering better days. His mother stood before him in his dream, talking to him about love and life. The dream Aidan wasn't paying much attention to her but the real Aidan was, watching his mother only a few hours before her death had come. His mother died when he was twelve, only a few short years ago. Now Aidan was sixteen and still had vivid dreams about his mother. He depended on them, almost, for how he lived his life, open and free, yet keeping some things carefully hidden. His light blue eyes watered behing their shields and a few tears slipped out beneath them. His older brother, Matthew, noticed and climbed into the back seat with his brother. He ruffled his brown hair, slowly bringing Aidan to consciousness. "You okay, baby bro?" Matthew asked in concern. "Hmm?" Aidan asked, eyes partially open. "Never mind, just go back to sleep." Matthew unbuckled his brother's seat belt and let Aidan cuddle up to him, falling back asleep with his head resting in the crook of Matthew's arm. Aidan was small compared to Matt, there was a six inch height difference Matt being 6'3". Matt was the tall, jock in their family, and Aidan was the small, music major. Aidan's brown hair and blue eyes contrasted greatly with his brother's blonde hair and brown eyes. Matt was 18 and buff, playing hockey all his life was labeled the stronger brother, and Aidan was considered fragile. The car pulled to a stop and Matt looked up from his brother's face to his father's. "We're here." His father said and Matt lightly nudged his brother awake. "Come on, Aidan, we're in New York." He said. Aidan's eyes opened and he sat up, his brother's arm falling from his shoulder. "We are?" He asked. "Yeah, let's go pick out our rooms." Matt opened the door on his side of the car and slowly stepped out. Cold air surrounded his body, making him shiver. "If you get in the house quickly you won't be as cold." His father commented and Matt quickly ran to the door. His father came up behind him holding the key, with it he unlocked the door and the three stepped into their new home. "Big." Aidan said walking into the unfurnished living room. He spun in circles looking up at the cathedral ceiling and to the hall up above on the right. "The bedrooms up there?" Matt questioned his father and barely waited for the nod before flying up the stairs. Aidan followed him but with much less enthusiasm. "Welcome home." He whispered to himself opening the door to a bedroom at the end of the hall. It was spacious and also had a cathedral ceiling. There were windows on each of the walls excluding the one with the door. He walked in and carefully crossed to one of the windows. He looked to his new back yard, noticing the pool and diving board he wouldn't be able to use until summer. "I found my room!" He called from his bedroom down to his father. "Alright, just come get some of your stuff to mark it so Matt won't take it." His father called back. "And afterwards we have to go to the school and register you guys." Aidan heard his brother's groan echo throughout the house and laughed lightly to himself. It was just like Matt to hate school. He walked to the door and saw his brother standing in the hall holding a suitcase of clothes in his hand. "You found your room?" He asked. "Yeah, this one." Aidan followed his brother into the bright room. The light streamed in from the big window, making the blue carpet even brighter. The grey walls gave the room an eerie but homey feel. Aidan understood why his brother chose this room. "It's nice." Aidan said. "Yeah, isn't it?" His brother walked to the corner of the room and dropped his suitcase there. "You need any help with your stuff, little bro?" He asked teasingly. "I think I can handle it." Aidan said walking out the door and down the steps to his new living room. He noticed some of his boxes sitting near the door and moved to get them. Bending, he curled his fingers beneath the cardboard and lifted it, he fell a couple of steps backwards and dropped the box. "I need your help, Matt." He called up jokingly. He heard his brother's loud footsteps and soon saw the smiling face. "Which do you need help with?" Matthew asked. "All of 'em." A smile came to Aidan's face and he laughed with his brother. Soon, all the boxes that traveled in the car with Aidan's family were put in the places they needed to be and they were waiting for the moving truck to arrive. "Come on, boys!" Matt and Aidan stopped their blackjack game when their father called. "Let's go get you in school." Their father sang joyfully. Matt groaned and stood, reaching out a hand to his brother. Aidan grabbed it and pulled himself upwards off Matt's floor. The box they had been playing on dented where their elbows had been. They walked from Matt's room and hung over the banister, looking down at their father. "Do we have to go to school?" Aidan groaned laughing at his father's perkiness. "We just got out of it." "Let's go." Matt and Aidan drudged down the steps and met their father at the bottom, pulling their shoes back on they walked out of their new home and to the car. "Dad, we definitely need to go get winter jackets." Matt said getting into the passenger seat. "Is school still going on?" Aidan called up to the front seat at the end of the drive. "I believe it is." Their father pulled into the parking lot where the high school kids were pilling out of a building. "Come on." Aidan slowly opened the car door and stood, watching all the kids run about happily. He felt a weight pulling his heart down, telling him where he should be, back in Florida with his friends laughing and playing around. He walked a few steps behind his brother and father, wanting to be alone at that moment. Aidan stopped, standing in the middle of the road looking at the sidewalk. Standing there was a boy that looked about his about his age staring back. The blond hair was eye length hanging partially in his eyes but the silvery grey color was still visible. Aidan was captivated by the boy. He heard a shout and saw the boy jerk his head away and start to walk towards the sound. A car drove by and Aidan came to his senses. He ran to catch up to his family. Maybe New York wasn't going to be as bad as Aidan first thought it would be. Maybe he could survive outside of Florida.
