Tommy had to move all his clothes and other items he'd taken with him to Springfield for which Danny was great help. Then he was debriefed about his day by the Smiths. When Tommy told Mr. Smith about his conversation with Sergeant Miller he spoke up. "Tommy I've had several discussions with Don Miller over the last few weeks. He really is more interested in your education, mental state, and physical well being, than how many arrests you make. He's not going to allow you to be out there with someone who doesn't know what they are doing. I really feel that if it's meant for you to do this, everything will work itself out. I feel if you apply yourself as you always have, Tommy, that you can do anything you put your mind to. I'm honored to have you as my son!" "I believe that's the nicest thing anyone had ever said to me, Dad!" Tommy said with his face showing the biggest smile he could manage with his blue eyes sparkling. "In the grown-up world, Tommy, you'll find that your employer will try to take advantage of you as much as he can get away with. Both Don and I work a bunch of hours each week to support our families. We would like to shelter you from that just as long as possible. That's why there are child labor laws. You were emancipated, so those laws can be ignored. At some point down the road, things are going to get rough. I just want you to know that we are all here for you." Tommy knew he was home. They discussed many other things, including Tommy enrolling in school. Tommy decided he'd enroll himself seeing as both the Smith's had to work in the morning. He also decided that he'd drive his car into school in case, for some reason, he needed to leave. Also, he didn't feel it was right that he take the bus when he wasn't even enrolled in school yet. Danny was also happy to hear that Tommy would be driving him into school in the morning. When Tommy and Danny headed to bed that night Tommy kissed and hugged both the Smiths and received big hugs and kisses in return. Although he'd always been close to the Smiths, their relationship seemed to be moving to the next level. That night Danny also wanted to move their relationship to the next level. After some kissing and fondling Danny announced, "Tommy, I want to suck you off big time until you're dry. Don't tell me you don't want it." "Yes, I want it and I need to do it to you too. But not until we've talked to Dad about having oral sex. Remember, we promised we would?" "Yes, I remember, Tommy, but he's not going to know unless we tell him." "Listen Danny, I don't want to spoil the mood, but did you notice how your parents were calling me son and I was calling them Mom and Dad tonight?" "Yeah, tell you the truth Tommy I didn't think much about it. It just seemed... seemed... natural." "I'm not going to break their trust, Danny; not now. Your parents are under no obligation to keep me here and treat me like a son. And I'm under no obligation to do what they tell me to do. We have to trust each other to do the right thing. If you like, we can talk with Dad tomorrow." "It will be embarrassing, Tommy, but that sounds fine to me." Tommy and Danny did manage to give each other a helping hand. Tommy woke up around 5:30 AM and decided to go jogging. He was up before anyone else so he pissed, shit, and dressed as quietly as possible. He took his badge, identification, and weapon in a fanny pack strapped on his waist. The weather was perfect for running and after some stretching Tommy started his run. Even though it was still dark and he didn't know the neighborhood that well, no one else seemed to be about. Tommy jogged about two and a half miles away from home and started back. About half way back to the house he started getting really thirsty cursing himself for not drinking anything before leaving that morning. Tommy stopped jogging and walked up to someone's house to get some water out of the faucet. Seeing as how it was still dark he didn't feel it would be a problem. He found the water faucet quickly and just as he was getting on his knees to get a drink he heard someone clearing his throat. Tommy looked up to see the silhouette of a man standing before him as all the light was behind the man. "Here son, I have a glass of ice water for you. I'm sure it's going to quench your thirst better then drinking out of my faucet." Tommy was first startled and then embarrassed over getting caught trespassing on this man's property. Tommy hadn't seen any lights on in the house so he just assumed that everyone in the house was asleep. Now he was wondering how the guy knew to bring him some water. "Thanks," said Tommy as he took the ice water from the man and downed it in several gulps. Then Tommy filled the glass from the faucet again and stepped back so he could see the man in the light. He looked like he was about 50 something. He was about the same height as Tommy, who had grown about three inches over the summer to 5'7" tall, and Tommy guessed he weighed about 30 pounds more then he did, at about 165, mostly in his legs and shoulders. The guy showed no signs of a potbelly. His hair was salt and pepper and shined in the light given off by the streetlight. Tommy decided that the guy looked like Charles Bronson in his first Death Wish movie. Although he didn't feel threatened by the man Tommy, had an uneasy feeling about him. "My name is Tommy Tucker." Tommy said extending his hand. "Nice to meet you, Tommy, I'm Roy Dixon; Roy Arthur Dixon. You can call me Roy." He extended his hand, which for the first time Tommy noticed had gloves on. 'This is strange? It's not cold enough for gloves. And what-up with him giving me his full name. And how does he know I'm thirsty and need something to drink?' considered Tommy. "Thanks for the ice water, - Roy, but how did you know I was thirsty?" "Simple deduction my dear Watson," Roy said in a perfect English accent. "I saw you jogging this morning on your way out. I've seen you running on my street in the morning before, but it's been a few weeks. Before you always had someone else running with you. When I saw you stop in front of my house you looked thirsty. Then I could tell you were conflicted about something and I deduced that you were considering whether or not to trespass in order to quench your apparent thirst. So I grabbed some ice water and proceeded outside." "I understand now. You must spend lots of time looking out your windows." "Old habits are hard to break Tommy. I tell you what, I'm up early every morning and if you are looking for a partner to run with I'm your man." Tommy had this funny feeling like an electrical shock running through his spine when Roy said 'a partner to run with'. "Thanks for the offer and I'll think about it." "Okay Tommy ask your dad and have him call me. I wouldn't even consider it without his knowing. Then just stop by if you want to run with me or if you need more water." "Thanks," and Tommy gulped down the rest of the water and handed the glass back to Roy, "I better get going now." "Okay Tommy, have a good day in school." 'I don't know who this guy is, but I'm going to find out today,' Tommy considered. Roy just smiled and waved goodbye as Tommy started jogging off. The rest of his jog was uneventful, but Tommy couldn't seem to get Roy off his mind. He had made a mental note of his address and planned on doing a background check on him after school. By the time Tommy got home, showered and got dressed everyone else was up and ready for work and school. Tommy and Danny had cold cereal along with orange juice. Then they said good-bye to the Smiths and got in Tommy's unmarked police car. The drive to the High School took about 20 minutes. It was only about 2 miles but the traffic was really heavy. Both boys were quiet Danny still waking up and Tommy still thinking about his early morning encounter with Roy. Tommy has written down his full name and address before he forgot it. Tommy parked the car in the visitors' parking lot, as he didn't have a sticker for the student parking lot. He wouldn't like to explain to Sergeant Miller that his car was towed because he parked it in the wrong place. The school looks fairly modern, like it was built in the 60's or 70's, and looked large and intimidating. Danny and Tommy got many looks as they exited the vehicle. Danny showed Tommy where the office was and went to his first class. Tommy walked up to the reception desk and was greeted by a petite woman who looked to be 30 something. "What can we do for you, honey?" she greeted him; she wore a big smile and was looking at him from head to toe. 'I do believe she's checking me out.' "I'm transferring from Springfield. I'm a freshman and I need to do whatever I have to do to get registered." "Well getting your records from Springfield should be no problem, however you need a parent or guardian to enroll you. I have the form here, but it must be filled out by a parent, sugar." 'She's definitely hitting on me?' "My situation is unique, so I'm probably going to have to talk to the principle. Just for giggles can I fill out as much of the form as I can before I see him or her?" "The principle is a she, and I guess it wouldn't hurt for you to fill in your name and address. Here you go, sweetie, and I'll let the principle know you're here. I'm sure you won't have to wait long to see her. 'Honey? Sugar? Sweetie? She thinks I'm a piece of candy.' Tommy started filling out the form while the receptionist dialed the principal's extension. After a few words she hung up the phone and told Tommy he could go right in to the principle's office. The principal, another petite lady who looked to be 40 something, greeted Tommy. She stood, smiled, and shook Tommy's hand, "you must be Tommy Tucker, and I'm Mrs. Blake. Police Sergeant Miller called me this morning to inform me of your arrival." "To tell you the truth Tommy, I'm glad you are here. The students in recnt years have been getting more and more out of control. I know that there are schools in the area with much worse conditions than our school, but I still welcome your help. I have a friend in Chicago Public Schools and have been following closely the program introduced a few weeks ago. Officer Miller has explained that he's not ready to start operations yet, and he wants you to take a low profile. Once operations get started, as I explained to Officer Miller, I would expect you to work closely with my office. In the meantime, please inform me of any observations that you might have. Also, please try to inform me before you take any action. I do have one security officer working at the school. He has a walkie-talkie. Both myself and the vice principal, Mr. Gamble, have receivers in our office which we monitor. I'm going to give you a radio that you can use anytime you need to get hold of one of us. I will also introduce you to Mr. Gamble, and Mr. Lopez, our security officer." If Mrs. Blake is anything, it's thorough. She brought in Mr. Gamble and we talked. Then she called in Mr. Lopez and said very much the same thing. Then she called one of the other office workers and arranged for Tommy's classes to be scheduled. Tommy was able to arrange many of the same classes that Danny had. Finally, after what seemed like forever, Mrs. Blake had Mr. Lopez take Tommy on a tour of the school, showing him where all his classes were, as well; as the gym and cafeteria. He also pointed out some kids he said were troublemakers. "That jerk over there is Kevin Mathers. That guy has been getting away with murder for 3 years in this school. Keep your eye on him and don't turn your back on him for a second, Tommy." "Thanks, Mr. Lopez." "Don't call me Mr. Lopez, Tommy, call me Tony, okay? Mr. Lopez makes me sound so old. If we're going to work with each other, at least we can use each other's first name, don't you think?" "Yes Tony, it's just hard for me not to address you as mister. Promise you won't get mad if I slip once in a while?" Tommy winked. "Yes, that's fine Tommy, I've already decided that I like you." Finally Tommy was allowed to go to class. Danny seemed generally happy to see him. The teachers all told him that starting three weeks into the school year was going to be a bitch getting caught up. Tommy ran into Rick and Bill which helped some, but for the most part Tommy felt like an outsider. The principal did issue him a student parking sticker, so at lunch he moved his car to the student parking lot. He had lunch with Danny and Bill, as Rick was in a different lunch period. "So what are your plans for after school, Tommy?" asks Danny. "I'm going in to the office and get set-up on the computer system. I have someone I need to look up." "Getting started kind of quickly, aren't you, Tommy?" "Actually I ran into someone this morning I want to look up; some old guy that offered me some water. He was being too nice to me and I thought I better check him out with the sex offender data base." "You think he has the hots for you, Tommy?" "Actually, I think I should also check out the receptionist from this morning too. She was the one who seemed to have the hots for me. To tell you the truth guys, I just got this funny feeling about the man. Like there was something I needed to know about him and he wasn't about to tell me. He even gave me his full name as if to say; 'HEY, look me up! He even offered to run with me." "What's his name, and where does he live?" inquired Bill. Tommy told them his name and address. Bill had never heard of him and couldn't place the house. It was just too far away from the neighborhood the boys live in. Danny's house was in the opposite direction from the state police station, so it was decided that Danny would take the bus home and Tommy would drive right from school to the station. By the end of the day Tommy realized that he had about 15 chapter to read by tomorrow. None of his classes worked with the same textbooks as did his first two weeks in Springfield. He felt confident that he could get caught up. He got a few more strange looks as he got in his car. When Tommy got to the police station, he took a few minutes to tell Sergeant Miller all about his day. Sergeant Miller set him up with a PC and log-in password to be able to reach all the different data bases available to the state police. Tommy first searched the sex offender database for Roy Arthur Dixon, which came up negative. Then he checked with the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and also found no license record for a Roy Dixon. So he searched the DMV for the address and found a license for a Charles E. Brown. Tommy had to laugh 'Charlie Brown'. He then searched the state tax records for Roy Dixon and again nothing. The address check again showed Charles E. Brown at this address. Finally getting frustrated Tommy went to the FBI Data base. Tommy typed in Roy Arthur Dixon and the address and hit the search button. A large red warning screen flashed on the screen and read, 'warning do not log off under penalty of imprisonment. Immediately fill out the below form and hit send. "Sergeant Miller I need your help now!" Danny shouted like he had just crashed the entire system. Sergeant Miller came immediately over and looked at the screen. "I was doing a search of the FBI data base for this person and this screen came up?" "I've done thousands of FBI searches Tommy, and I've never seen a screen like this one come up. You better fill out the form and send it fast." Tommy filled out his name, title, address at work and home, nearest phone number, supervisor's name and title, city, state, and department. Tommy filled it out quickly and hit the send button. Fifteen seconds later the phone rang. "Sergeant Miller speaking, may I help you?" "Are you the supervisor of Tommy Tucker?" "Yes I am." "What kind of a State Police officer goes by the name Tommy?" "A 14 year-old police officer." "Fourteen years-old; hmmmm? - Interesting. Anyway I'm area director Johnson NSA. Put the boy on the phone!" Sergeant Miller shrugged his shoulders and handed Tommy the phone, "Hello?" "What was the nature of your inquiry? Don't say the name this is not a secure line." "I was out jogging this morning and I got thirsty. So I was going to get a drink from a faucet at a house I passed. Just before I was able to get a drink I was approached by a man who introduced himself by the name I reported. He had a glass of ice water for me. He even said, and I quote, "if you are looking for a partner to run with, I'm your man." "Are you looking for a partner in what ever police work you are doing master Tucker?" "As a matter of fact we are." "Okay it's 4:30 EST where I'm at right now and 3:00 CST where you are. Do you have a heliport at your station?" "Can helicopters land here?" Tommy asked Sergeant Miller. "Yes there is, Tommy." "Yes there is," Tommy repeated on the phone." "Okay I'll be there by 6:30 your time at the latest. Don't leave and don't talk to anyone else about this until I get there. Understood?" "Yes Sir." "Okay Tommy hand the phone back to officer Miller." Director Johnson repeated to Officer Miller the same thing that he had said to Tommy. Then he hung up. "I don't know who it was that you ran into Tommy, but from the response I'd think you just found the Unabomber. Anyway, now we wait. I have plenty to do. Try to do something that doesn't bring in the FBI and the CIA to join the NSA." Tommy got a shocked look on his face and Sergeant Miller smiled and ruffled his hair. "Don't worry kiddo, you did nothing wrong. As a matter of fact I think Director Johnson was impressed with the fact that a 14 year-old had the sense to do a back-ground check on who ever this is." Sergeant Miller went back to his desk and did some work. Tommy started doing his homework and was soon engrossed in getting caught up. In the three hours he read 2 chapters of every textbook and had a good start on his assignment. Tommy called home about 6:00 to let his family know he'd be home late. They were happy to hear he was doing his homework. He got back into his homework and was interrupted by the sound of a helicopter landing. Shortly after that two tall men in suits were escorted over to Sergeant Miller. "Sergeant Miller, I'm Area Director Johnson and this is special agent Jones, nice to meet you." They all shook hands with each other and then Sergeant Miller pointed out Tommy. The came over and shook Tommy's hand too. "Look it's dinner time and we're hungry, so lets get something to eat. We can talk while we're having dinner. Anyway, it's my experience that most national security issues are worked out in a restaurant somewhere." Stated Director Johnson. "Sure, that's great," replied Sergeant Miller. "By the way, what area are you director of, Mr. Johnson?" "North America, Mr. Miller." Officer Miller turned white realizing he's in way over his head. "Tommy, you're driving, how's steaks sound gentlemen? I know a great steak house." "That will be fine. We'll arrange for someone to pick us up from the restaurant once we get there. We're going to spend the night here in the area." "So tell me, Sergeant Miller, Officer Tucker, how a 14 year old became a state police officer?" Director Johnson asked once they got in Tommy's police cruiser. So on the way to the restaurant and half way through drinks and appetizers Tommy and Don explained Tommy's training adventure and his experience with his Dad. Then Tommy explained his encounter with Roy Dixon that morning. "Tommy, I must say that I'm impressed with you and I'm not an easy man to impress. One comment I will make is to keep an open mind. You say you are gay, but I can tell you that through the years I've met 100's of guys that had sex with other guys at your age and ended up being straight. And on the other hand, I've also met many men who never were attracted to other guys at your age and even got married, then ended up in a gay relationship later in life. It's just that a kid as neat as you ought to have kids of his own someday. Now on to other things." "This information is not to be repeated. Roy Dixon is a retired company man. What that means is he's worked for the NSA, FBI, DEA, ATF, CIA, treasury department, US marshals office, and all the military intelligence departments. The bottom line is he's the best. He was drafted out of college. He never wanted to be a government agent. He wanted to be a schoolteacher. We didn't give him any choice. He was exploited and abused. After 25 years of invaluable work he made us an ultimatum." "Over the years he learned enough about our government to get 1000's of government employees fired and knows about 100's of scandals. He threatened to expose everything unless we stopped exploiting him and let him retire. He said at some point he wanted to work again, but it would be under his own terms and conditions. If anyone else had tried to make an ultimatum like this one, they would have been made to disappear. However, like I said, he's the best. He has us by the balls and he knows it." "So we set him up under the witness protection program under the name Charles E. Brown." Tommy Snickers. "Yeah, funny name. That was two years ago. We set up flags under either his real name or his address. I can't tell you why Roy is the best. Roy can't tell you either. It's classified. However, should you figure it out, we'll need to know." "Based on what Roy said this morning, he wants to be your partner, Tommy." "How is that possible Director Johnson? He doesn't even know I'm a police officer." "I already told you, Tommy, I can't tell you that; if I did I'd have to shoot you." He said smiling. "Another thing he was wearing gloves, yet it wasn't cold. Why is that?" "Once again Tommy, it's classified. I didn't bring Special Agent Jones here for nothing. He was Roy's partner on an antiterrorism team for two years. Why don't you tell us a little about your former partner, Brent?" "Roy's natural abilities and talents are so good they are classified. But that's not enough for him. He knows enough about the law to pass the bar in any state or sit on any judge's seat. He'd been using computers in crime fighting when Bill Gates was still in grade school. He's the best shot I've ever seen. He's in incredibly good shape and is one of the best street fighters I've ever seen in action. The bottom line is, if you're working in a large school with 2000 students, you are going to need a full time person to take those under arrest to county juvenile or jail, and fill out paperwork. I would gladly give up half my pay in order to have him back." "I would suggest you meet with Roy tomorrow morning and tell him you would love to run with him, Tommy" To Be Continued...
