Fup ****************************************************************************** FROM CHAPTER 2 "Yeah," Chad replied, then started to lean further inside the car. As if realizing what he was about to do, he jerked back, and stood up. "I'll see ya about nine." David bent his head to look up at Chad, who appeared to be blushing. He smiled, "Cool, looking forward to it." "Yeah me too, see ya." Then Chad gave a small wave and headed back toward the house. LIFE GOES ON - DAVID AND CHAD #3 - Ouija Knows "Here, David, take these," his mom smiled. David returned the smile and handed the offered towels to Chad. They had been here almost an hour already. Anticipating the worst, he was pleasantly surprised to find his mother and sister in particularly jovial moods. It was almost as if the previous evening hadn't happened. There was still an undercurrent of tension, but so far it had been a relatively pleasant experience. "Thanks, I didn't think about towels until after I took my shower this morning." "After?" Lynn laughed. "What did you do, air dry?" David blushed a little, "Sorta used some shirts and stuff." The three others broke out into gales of laughter at David's admission. "Shirts?" Lynn laughed. "Well, you know, jeeez. Thanks for the towels, they'll come in handy, mom." "You're welcome, David. If you wouldn't....," his mom started, only to be poked roughly by Lynn. "Never mind," she finished lamely. His visit had been quite productive. Towels were just the latest 'donation' from his mother. The backseat of the Ford was stuffed with sheets, their old vacuum, some pots and pans, and anything else his mom and sister had determined was necessary. During the time he was there, he had managed to pull his mother aside and follow Lynn's advice. "Look mom, I'm not going to apologize for last night. I meant what I said. I just need to get out of here before I explode. That's all." "I guess we should be the ones apologizing, David. But you were a little mean." "Yeah, maybe," David admitted. "But I still meant what I said, even though it might not have come out right." "Well, okay, David. I don't like it, but like you said, you're 20. You're old enough to make your own decisions." "Thanks, mom." His mother nodded her response, and then things returned to as normal as they could get, considering the circumstances. Now, as he closed the trunk for the last time, he gave a brief hug to his mother and sister. "Thanks, I appreciate all this." "Let us know if you need anything else, okay?" his mother asked. "Will do, see ya all later." He got behind the wheel, and waited until he and Chad were out of the driveway before starting to laugh. "What's so funny?" asked Chad. "That whole thing, jeeez, just when ya think ya have it all figured out. Women," he finished with a snort. "It was sort of weird," Chad admitted. "Well, Lynn probably talked to mom last night when she got home. Maybe that helped. But it was still strange. It's like the whole Kel thing - if we don't talk about it, it never happened, know what I mean?" "I guess," Chad shrugged. Then he grinned, "So how was your camping trip?" "Huh? Oh, the sleeping bag thing? It was okay." Then he put on a long face. "But it was awful lonely. Didn't have my normal 'tentmate.'" Chad laughed, "Next time, call me. Oh, that's right," he finished with a snicker. "Hey now, I warned you about that last night. Better be careful." "Whatever," Chad scoffed. "I ain't scared of you." "We'll see about that." They pulled into the parking lot, and started unloading the car. Soon there was a pile of stuff in the living room to be put away. David rubbed his hands together and said, "Well, guess I'll run you home. I can get all this stuff put away." "You sure?" "Yeah, you have some stuff you gotta do anyway, and it's almost lunch." "Okay, if you're sure. Maybe you can pick me up later?" "If it's okay with your parents, that'd be cool." Chad started laughing, "I already asked, you can come get me about six." "Great. Let's get you home." When David got back, he started putting the pile of stuff in order. Soon the only thing he had left was the footlocker. He dragged it back into the bedroom and opened the lid. He took out the picture, and set it on the bureau. He had to get a new frame sometime. Then he went through the other stuff inside. Not much really to put away, some odds and ends, some board games went on the upper shelf of the closet. He didn't have a bookcase so the text books from college and some new paperbacks he had purchased would have to stay in there. He made the bed, then jumped on top, his hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling. He looked at the clock, still some hours before he picked up Chad. Maybe a nap would do the trick. Sleep wouldn't come though. So, he did what he did best, thought. For some reason, he kept coming back to Chad basically yanking his face back from the car last night. What the heck was the scoop with that? He smiled humorously at the idea that the teen was going to lean into the car and kiss him. No way. Chad was affectionate, yes. But David doubted if a kiss had been on Chad's mind. And even if it was, he was more like a little brother than boyfriend material. Sure, he loved the guy, but...but...but... From now on, David thought, he'd have to watch himself. No sense in giving Chad the wrong impression. David valued that friendship, no sense in screwing it up. After all, in another couple of months, he was going back to college. His conscience started bugging him then. He felt bad about leaving the way he had, but...but...but.... Argh. He had to do something. He'd go bonkers sitting here thinking. Sliding his sneaker-clad feet of the bed (wouldn't his mother DIE about that?), he got up and snagged his car keys off the kitchen table, and headed out the door. He drove around town for a few minutes, then made a snap decision, pulling to the curb and feeding the parking meter. He walked up the sidewalk a few feet, sucked in a breath, then entered the barber shop. His dad had brought him here regularly when he was younger, but his hair hadn't seen a barber's scissors in years, except for the occasional trim by his mom when he was home from college. Ignoring the look from the old man already in the chair, he grinned at the look of recognition from Mr. Thomas, the barber. "Boy, it must be going to snow," Mr. Thomas laughed. "David Barker coming in for a haircut. I haven't seen you in years, son. How are you?" "Hey, not too bad, Mr. Thomas," David smiled back. Then he gestured to his shoulder length hair, "Figured it was about time, it's getting to be a pain." "Your dad was in here last week, said you're doing good in school. And sorry to hear about your friend." "Thanks, and yeah, I'm not doing too bad." "Well good, get yourself educated, and get a good-paying job." "Working on it," David replied. "I start work Monday, so thought I'd better maybe get my hair cut." Mr. Thomas nodded, finishing up the man in the chair. When the man got up, Mr. Thomas motioned to the chair with a grin. "Gonna have to get some overtime today." The other man laughed, paid his bill, and left. David settled into the vinyl chair and Mr. Thomas fastened the apron around his neck. "How far you want to go, David?" With his instructions, Mr. Thomas started cutting, chatting amiably with David as the hair fell to the floor. Twenty minutes later, he used the razor to trim David's neck, then laughed and spun David to face the mirror. "There ya go. Short enough?" David felt pounds lighter. His now collar length hair and shorter bangs were a definite change from the 'mop' he had been used to. He smiled a little and Mr. Thomas laughed. "You clean up pretty good, David." "Well, it's.....different. Gonna take some getting used to." "Mom and Dad'll be happy, huh?" "I guess. They've been after me for years." "And your girlfriend will think she's dating a whole new guy." "Yeah, she sure will," David agreed. "Well, David, it was nice to see you again," Mr. Thomas said. Then he shook his head and laughed, "It's like a whole different person standing here now." "I guess," David admitted both to Mr. Thomas and himself. "And it was good to see you too." He gestured to the hair on the floor as he paid the bill, "Now you can give your wife a fur coat for Christmas." Mr. Thomas laughed and shook David's hand. "You take care of yourself now." David nodded, then walked back down the street to the library. He was pleasantly surprised to see Mrs. Bruchey still behind the desk, and for the next hour or two, he sat and caught up on the local happenings. Looking at the clock, he saw it was just about time to pick up his houseguest. He said his farewell to the librarian, and started driving toward Chad's. Driving past his house, he noticed his dad's truck in the driveway and kept going. The look of surprise on Mrs. Murray's face when she opened the door was memorable. She paused in mid-greeting, then recovered, complimenting him on his 'new look' as they walked into the living room. David grinned at her as Chad walked by the doorway, shooting a glance into the room, at first not recognizing the young man talking to his mom. Chad did a quick double take then came back into the room, laughing. David shrugged, "Lost a fight with a lawnmower." "Looks like it," Chad laughed. "You look different." "And I weight ten pounds less," David chuckled. "Let me get changed, and I'll be right back down, okay?" "Sure, kiddo, no sweat." When Chad had run up the steps, Mrs. Murray turned to David and said, "I don't mean to pry, but why did you really move out of your house?" "Umm, well, it was just a bad scene," David said. "And I'm 20, time to get out of the nest and all." "Well, I'm sorry you felt you had to move, David. You've always been a nice boy." David blushed a little and mumbled his thanks. He was saved from further embarrassment by Chad re-entering the room, all smiles. "Ya ready?" "Sure am," David replied, standing up. Then he looked at Mrs. Murray, "What time you want him home?" "Whenever you're tired of him," she replied, grinning. "Well, I don't have a whole lot to do around the apartment, so it might be sorta early." "As long as it's before 11, that's fine." "Cool." Then he turned to Chad, "Let's roll, kiddo." "You be good, Chad," Mrs. Murray admonished. "Oh, he will be, or I'll take him over my knee," David joked. Chad grimaced at David, then his mom, "Yeah, yeah." They made their exit, waving goodbye to Chad's mother, who was standing on the front porch. Then David said, "I was serious about not having a whole lot to do, no TV or anything." "S'ok, we'll have fun." Then he chuckled, "You look so different." David ran his fingers through his hair, "Yeah, I guess." "Betcha Kel would have laughed." Then realizing what he said, he mumbled, "Sorry." "Hey, it's okay, Chad. And you're right, he would have," David chuckled. Then he turned serious, "Don't be like my parents, okay? It's cool to talk about him." "Okay, I just don't want to make you mad or anything." "Just say what you want to say, kiddo. Anytime you feel like it. Deal?" "Deal, okay," Chad replied with a smile. They entered David's apartment, and he showed the teen around. "Wow, you got all that stuff put away. It looks like a regular place now." "I guess, so ya want something to drink?" "Pepsi's cool," Chad replied. Then as David went to the kitchen, Chad walked into the living room and turned on the stereo, sitting on the sofa. David returned, handed Chad his soda, then sat in the recliner, remembering his earlier decision. He caught a flash of disappointment on Chad's face. "What's wrong?" "Nothing," Chad replied, then got up and started running through radio stations on the stereo. Finding one he liked, he stood in front of David and asked, "So what are we gonna do now?" "Well, I've got some games in the bedroom closet, ya wanna play something?" "Yeah, I'll go look." David chuckled as Chad went into the bedroom, then returned with a stack of board games. They spent the next couple of hours playing Monopoly on the kitchen table, Chad completely dominating the real estate market, leaving David penniless. "Man, you wiped me out," David complained. "That's cos I'm the man," Chad laughed. Then he held up another box. "Let's do this." Chad was holding the Ouija board box. David had only done it a couple of times and was convinced that it was a load of rubbish, but if Chad wanted to play, then fine. He cleaned the Monopoly game up, and gestured toward the table. "Okay, man." "No, you can't play Ouija in the kitchen," Chad scoffed. "We gotta go in the living room and sit on the floor with it on our knees. Don't you know anything?" "I guess not," David chuckled, following Chad into the living room and sitting on the floor. Chad pulled the board and platen out of the box, then turned off the overhead light, leaving the kitchen light burning. "You gotta have the right mood and all," Chad explained. David raised his eyebrows and nodded, "Whatever you say, Madame Chad," receiving a punch on the shoulder. "You gotta be serious," Chad advised. "Otherwise it won't work." "Okay, I'll be serious." Chad sat cross-legged in front of him, laying the board across their knees. Placing their fingers on the platen, Chad began. "Ouija, are you there?" After a few seconds, the pointer moved to 'YES.' Chad grinned, then started asking questions, the pointer moving to spell out the answers. "You know, I heard that the people playing this actually are the ones moving the pointer subconsciously," David informed. "Like when you ask a question out loud about the other person, that person hears the question and actually answers the question." "Well, let's ask questions in our heads," responded Chad. "Give it a try, you first." "Okay," Chad then closed his eyes for a few seconds. He opened them, and watched the pointer start to move. It slid to 'YES', then to 'NO' and stopped. "What did you ask? Whatever it was, it's confused," David laughed. "I asked if you were still sad," Chad replied. "Oh, well, I guess it's right, then. Yes and no." "Told ya!" Chad stated. "Your turn." David closed his eyes and mentally asked a question. The pointer moved to spell out Michael. "Hey, that's my middle name," he said. "Yeah, that's what I asked." "See? It does work," Chad said. David nodded, still not convinced. After all he DID know what Chad's middle name was, so it wasn't that impressive. He nodded at Chad, who once again closed his eyes. The pointer was still for a few seconds, then began to move. It spelled out 'David,' then stopped. David chuckled, then looked at Chad, whose face was beet red. "Well, what did you ask?" "Nothin', really," Chad replied, lowering his eyes. "C'mon, kiddo, tell me," David teased gently. "No, you'll think I'm weird or something." "I already think you're weird, that's why I like you," David laughed. "Haha," Chad replied. "Go ahead, your turn." "Nope, not til you tell me what you asked." "Never mind, this game's stupid," Chad responded, getting to his feet and sitting on the sofa, leaving David somewhat dumbfounded on the floor. "Hey," David said softly. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." David got up and sat beside the teenager who turned his face away. "Hey Chad, it's just a stupid game, man. It's no big deal, okay?" He heard Chad mumble something. "What was that?" "I said I asked it who I would go with next." "Huh? 'Go with'?" "Yeah, like go out with." "And it spelled out me?" David chuckled. "Should I give you my ring now?" "Shut up." "Hey, hey, sorry, man," David apologized, putting his arm around Chad's shoulders. "S'ok. Told ya you'd think I was weird." "Nah, it's just a game, man." "I guess," Chad admitted, relaxing under David's arm. "Tell ya what. Let's just sit here and talk or listen to music, okay?" "Yeah, no more games for me tonight." David chuckled, "I can see why." Chad gave David a wry smile, then got up to turn the stereo up a little. He came back and sat close to David, who once again put his arm over the younger boy's shoulders. Chad relaxed against David and they started chatting about whatever came to their minds. A little while later, David grinned and teased, "So you wanna go out with me?" He felt Chad stiffen, then relax once more. Obviously Chad wasn't comfortable with that line of teasing, so David redirected the conversation back to everyday matters. As they talked, Chad's head slowly came to rest on David's shoulder. David tightened his grip on Chad for a second, then resumed talking. Once he reached across Chad to get his soda, his arm resting briefly on Chad's crotch. He was surprised to feel the hard lump under the boy's jeans and drew his arm back slowly. Wordlessly, he hugged the boy again. Their conversation died off at one point and after a few seconds, Chad turned to David, still blushing, and said, "Ummmm, I like this." Then he leaned up and gave David a kiss on the cheek. "Well, I do too, kiddo," was the only response David could think of. "I'm glad, you remember holding my dick that time? When you woke me up to pee?" Chad asked, not looking at him. "Yeah." David wasn't quite sure if he wanted to go down this road. Jeeez, the kid was 15. And he had told himself earlier that Chad wasn't boyfriend material. What the heck was he going to do now? How could he get out of this situation gracefully? While he was thinking, Chad had grabbed his other arm and placed it across his lap again. David's mind stopped. Chad was still hard. He could feel his erection under his forearm. Wordlessly, he pushed slightly down on the erection, letting Chad know he knew it was there. Chad's response was to lean more heavily against David, head resting on the older boy's shoulder. They were silent for a few minutes, David gently pressing on the boy's shorts-clad hardon every so often. Reality came crashing down on him then. What the hell was he doing? He started removing his arm, only to feel Chad grab his wrist, holding it in place. He whispered, "Don't," then was silent once more. David was almost in a panic, how could he take advantage of Chad's friendship like this? "Umm, Chad, are you okay?" "Yeah, it's okay, Dave." "Yeah, but, I mean, ummm." Chad chuckled, letting go of David's arm which quickly slid off his lap, back to David's leg. He looked down at David's crotch, noticing the bulge, and pointed with a grin. It was David's turn to blush. "Well, ummmm," he started. "Told ya it was okay," Chad said, turning slightly, smiling at David. Then he surprised David again by pressing his palm quickly against David's own erection and chuckling. "Ummm, you sure this is okay with you?" David asked. "Told ya it was," Chad assured him. David looked at the clock, almost ten-thirty. Chad followed his glance and sighed. "Almost time to go home." "Yeah," David replied softly. "Can I come over again sometime?" "Umm, anytime, Chad. I care for you a lot, man. I just don't wanna ruin anything." "Me either, that's why I wouldn't tell you what I asked. It's embarrassing." David squeezed Chad's shoulders again. "Remember when you got a boner at the swimmin' hole when we were having chicken fights?" Chad laughed, and they started re-hashing the good times they had. At ten-forty, David pulled Chad up from the sofa. "Time to go, I guess." Chad stood in front of him, not letting go of his hand. He stood there a few seconds, just looking slightly up at David, who smiled back into Chad's face. "So, I have to ask," David began, "last night at the car, were you going to kiss me?" Chad flushed almost crimson and nodded. "But I didn't think you'd like it. Or I'd make you mad." David raised his arms, placing his forearms on Chad's shoulders, lacing his fingers together. "You know better now, right?" "Yeah," Chad whispered. By what seemed mutual agreement, their lips touched briefly, then parted. David grinned, "Gotta work on that." "I guess," Chad replied. "I've only kissed girls." "No difference really," David responded. Then he realized his mistake. "Did you and Kel do this?" Chad asked, wide-eyed. "Ummm, we tried, I guess," David replied in a noncommital tone. Chad pressed his advantage. "You were messing around with each other, weren't you?" David remained silent, stunned. Chad continued, "And you WERE holding hands in the movies that time, weren't you? I KNEW it!" David was mentally reeling at Chad's observations. He was speechless. Chad knew all along? "When did you figure it out?" he asked softly. Chad shrugged, then extricated himself from David's arms. He started for the kitchen door, then turned around. He grinned, "I didn't. Until now. Were you like boyfriends or something?" Then he saw the look on David's face. His grin dropped as he walked back toward David. "Dave, you okay?" "Not really, Chad. Sorta feel sick." "Dave, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." David waved him off. "It's okay Chad, just wondering how many other people think that way." "I don't think anyone. I know my parents don't, and Cindy still looooves you," Chad responded with a small smile. David responded with a wan smile. Chad stood once again in front of him. David looked down at Chad, "Does it matter to you?" "What do you think?" Chad scoffed. "I think it's pretty cool you and Kel were real good friends. I sorta always wanted to be as close as you were. I guess I was jealous. I'm sorry. I mean I know you told me that I didn't have to be like Kel, but maybe I wanna be." "I dunno, Chad, I mean I love you like a little brother, man. I don't want to ruin that. Dammit, I don't know what to think right now." "Well, why don't you take me home? We can talk more in the car." David shook his head, then was wrapped in Chad's hug. He had to admit that it felt great. He returned the hug, resting his chin on Chad's head. "I dunno, man," he whispered. "Me neither," Chad said, then pulled out of the hug, still smiling. "Let's go." "Yeah don't want to get you in trouble," David agreed, opening the door for Chad. They slipped into the car, Chad remaining next to the window until they were out of town. Then he slid over next to David again, pulling his arm across his shoulders and resting his left arm on David's leg. They didn't say a word on the way back to Chad's house, and with a slight squeeze to David's knee, Chad slid back over to his side as they turned into his driveway. David pulled to a stop, then turned to a grinning Chad. "I had a blast. Even though it was a little weird." "When can I come over again?" "Anytime," David replied, a smile on his face. "I think we have a lot of talking to do, huh?" "Yeah. Maybe tomorrow?" "Maybe, want me to come over?" "Maybe you better hadn't," Chad said. "If I can come over, I'll have mom or dad bring me." "Okay with me. Seriously, whenever you want, come on over." "I will, thanks," Chad replied, then opened the door and slid out of the car. Just before he slammed the door closed, he grinned and said, "Love you, man." Then he was running toward the house, leaving David stunned in the driveway. ****************************************************************************** Another specific chain of events I can remember vividly. Wonder why? :-) So much happened in those first few days home from college, it was almost a relief to go to work that following Monday. Chad didn't come back to David's that weekend, however. So it was almost an 'interruptus' type of deal. lol Stay tuned though, it's a long coaster ride - and David has some questions answered. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback.
