Chad grinned and nodded, then walked out to the car. David hugged her and repeated, "Thanks." "Wheat and chaff," she responded. David smiled and walked down the steps to his car. LIFE GOES ON - DAVID AND CHAD #36 - Quandary "Well, that wasn't so bad, was it?" "No, but she's still scary," Chad replied. David chuckled. "She can be, that's for sure. But looks like you made a good impression." Chad nodded, sliding his hand across the seat. Noticing the movement, David dropped a hand from the steering wheel and intertwined his fingers with Chad's. Content with the touch, the two of them remained silent on the way back to the Murray's. As they turned into Chad's driveway, David gave the hand in his a slight squeeze and returned his to the wheel. Turning off the ignition, David looked at his watch. "Comin' in for a little?" Chad asked. "Yeah, a couple minutes. Then I gotta get down the road." "Cool," Chad replied, then was out of the car and running toward the house. David grinned, shook his head, then followed the teen inside. "....you were good," David heard as he entered the house and walked toward the living room. "Well, he survived the inquisition," David laughed. "She's nice." Chad said, flopping down into an empty chair in the living room. David leaned against the door jamb and grinned as Chad related their afternoon. Karen looked over to him and asked, "He was a gentleman?" "You have to be around Nanny," David laughed. "He did good." "Well, from what I remember from earlier in the summer, if he wasn't, she'd probably rake him over the coals," Matt chuckled. David smiled and nodded. "Well, I guess I should head out." He became serious then. "Guys, thanks so much for a cool weekend." "Well, as you kids say, no sweat," Matt smiled in return. Chad rose from the chair and walked over to him. David tousled the blond hair and smiled. "And thanks for the party. You're about the only one with the guts to try and surprise me." "Glad you liked it," Chad smiled wanly. "You drive safely," Karen said. "When will you be back?" David thought quickly. Chad's birthday was toward the middle of October. "Guess not until November," he stated, winking over Chad's head. "But...," Chad started, then saw the grin spreading over David's face. "You're pulling my chain." David wrapped his arm around Chad's neck. "Think I'd miss your sweet 16?" "Wondered there for a while," Chad answered seriously. "Wouldn't miss it for the world, kiddo." He let go of Chad and glanced at his watch. "Well, I'm gonna bolt. Thanks again, guys, really." "You're welcome, David. We'll see you next month." David nodded, then looked at Chad. "Comin' out?" Chad nodded and followed David out to the car. Before opening the door, David turned and wrapped the teen in a hug. "Thanks a lot, kiddo. Birthday to remember." "Love you, Dave." David tightened his embrace briefly, noticing the elder Murrays standing on the front porch, smiling. "Love you too, man," he whispered, releasing the younger boy and opening the car door. He slid inside and started the car. "Smiling up at Chad, he said, "See ya for your birthday." Chad nodded. He reached in the open window and squeezed David's shoulder. "Be careful, okay?" David grinned. "You betcha. Be good, if that's possible." The teen grinned. "Maybe." "Well, knowing you....," David chuckled. "Yep." David slipped the shifter into reverse. "Love ya, kiddo. See ya next month." Chad smiled and nodded, stepping back from the car as David turned around. He put his arm out the window and waved at the three Murrays on the way down the driveway. A quick stop at his parents' - his father wasn't home - to say goodbye, and he was heading toward the highway. Southbound on the interstate an hour later, he thought back over the weekend. Well, it was definitely one to remember, he thought with a smile. He was smiling as he thought over the stuff Chad had to do to get his family together. And the camping was definitely a highlight. He adjusted his crotch, which had become slightly uncomfortable at the thought of their overnight experience. Then this morning...damn. He passed a car, and glanced over almost automatically. He grinned as he noticed the couple inside looked like Siamese twins joined at the hips. Slipping back into the right lane, his smile faded. "What the hell are you doing?" he asked out loud. He didn't want to go there. But it was too late. His mind tuned out the music from the tape player as it slipped into 'you should know better' mode. He looked in the rearview mirror at the couple in the car behind him. Seeing the woman give a brief kiss to the guy's cheek, he shook his head. What the heck was he thinking? He thought back over his high school years with Kel, remembering some of the talks they had about not being able to show their affection like normal couples. They were probably the most sobering chats they had. Was he being selfish pulling Chad into the same kind of thing? He thought back to this morning. What would have happened if Matt and Karen had come home early? He almost groaned out loud at the thought. Another snippet of conversation came into his head. "...like it's just us, no one else around." Well, there WERE other people around. The Murrays trusted him enough to allow him to stay in their home, and what did he do? "Shit," he exclaimed quietly. "Some freaking example you are," he chastised himself. So, what to do? They way he saw it, there were two choices. One, stop anything but platonic intimacy with his boyfriend. Two, continue and take the risk of blowing everything. He shuddered at both choices. He did know one thing, Chad deserved to have a 'normal' life. He glanced in the rearview again, he had either outdistanced the other car, or it had exited the highway. It was getting dark as he crossed the state line, his mind had been churning for almost two hours. It was completely dark by the time he pulled into the student parking lot. He retrieved his bag off the back seat and started walking toward the dorm. "Why the hell is the damn parking lot so far away?" he griped to himself, the darkness matching his mood. He was aware, almost too aware, of the 'normal' couples he saw walking around the campus. He paused at the door to the dorm. "Home again, home again, ring a ding ding," he snorted quietly and pulled open the door, digging in his pocket for his keys. As he approached his room, he heard laughing from behind the door. Recognizing Mark's and Greg's voices, he turned the knob and walked into the room. "Well, there's the long lost wanderer," Mark grinned. "Hey roomie," Greg greeted him. "What's happening, guys?" David asked, subdued. "We just got back from your place of employment," Mark laughed, wiggling his eyebrows. "Ol' Greg here is quite the stud." David began pulling his dirty clothes out of his bag and tossing them into his clothes basket. "Oh yeah?" he asked disinterestedly. "Yeah," Mark continued, "we managed to hook up with some hot chickies for the social next week." "That's cool," David replied, slipping his now empty bag onto the closet shelf. "Guess you wouldn't be interested, seeing as you just spent the weekend with the squeeze back home," Greg chuckled. "Yeah, guess not," David answered. "I'm kinda hungry, gonna hit the machines," he added, walking out of the room. A few minutes later, he was sitting on one of the sofas in the lounge, munching on crackers and soda and glancing at the TV playing in the corner. "So how was your trip?" Greg asked, sitting beside him. A little startled, his mind had been elsewhere, he answered, "Not bad. Sounds like you had a good one." "Yeah, sorta weird not having you around," Greg laughed. "But you probably had a lot more fun than I did," he grinned. "Dunno, had a surprise party and just hung out." "Oh yeah," Greg enthused, "happy birthday." "Thanks, all legal now," David smiled. "Well, when's the party?" "Ugh, no parties for this boy." "Not a party animal, huh?" "Not really. Can't afford to let my grades drop, I guess," David shrugged. Finished his snack, he rose from the sofa. "Well, kinda tired, think I'll head back." "I'll go with," Greg responded. Entering their room, David pulled out the books he needed for classes the next day, noticing his mail on the desk. "Got your mail," Greg offered. "No sense in leaving it in the box." "Thanks, I'll get to it tomorrow, maybe." "No sweat," Greg answered and began stripping off his clothes. David was surprised to see that his roomie's previous shyness had almost vanished, as he walked naked to his closet to get his PJ bottoms. Greg shot him a questioning grin. "What?" David turned his attention back to his own tasks. "Nothing." "Sure?" Greg asked, still standing in the same place, his PJ's loosely grasped in one hand. "Yeah, sure," David replied, slipping out of his clothes and into his gym shorts. "Well, okay," his roomie replied. As he slipped on his sleepwear, he added, "Thought you might have seen something wrong, like a big ol' pimple or something." "Nope, nothing like that." "Okay, well, night," Greg said, climbing into the upper bunk and turning on his reading lamp. "Night," David answered, locking the door and turning off the room light. He walked to his bunk and Greg rolled onto his side to face him. "You okay?" David's eyes wandered from Greg's face to the smooth chest, then returned. "Yeah, I think." "Well, you've been kinda off since you've been back. Even Mark noticed it." "Just got a lot on my mind, and I'm tired, that's all." Greg scratched his stomach, drawing David's eyes away as they followed the hand. "Well, if that's all it is," he replied, then rolled onto his back. "That's it. Night." "Night," Greg replied and opened his book. David slipped into his bunk, rolling onto his side facing the wall. Slowly his eyes closed and he slipped into a restless sleep. His dreams were disjointed and he woke the next morning feeling as if he got no sleep at all. He fumbled around in his closet for a towel and his toiletries then shuffled down the hall to the showers. The hot water made him feel a little better, at least physically. Morning ablutions complete, he went back to his room, and sat in his desk chair, turning it away from the window so he had light to read his mail. Greg was softly snoring, and he looked at the clock. "Seven in the morning?" David grumbled quietly as he turned his attention back to the mail. Tossing the junk into the trash can, he was left with two letters. One was from Dale, asking how things were going and filling him in on his latest girlfriend and life in general. Slipping the letter back into the envelope, he'd answer it later, he opened the second. "Dave, Just a quick note to let you know I'm still alive. School is pretty decent, and unlike you, I'm not getting my brain sucked out. Happy birthday, too. Let's get together over Thanksgiving break sometime. Talk to you later. Steve PS - Rhonda says hi." "Goofball," David smiled. His thoughts were interrupted by a stirring on the top bunk. He raised his head to see Greg had rolled onto his side, the blankets pushed down to his feet. Still snoring, he settled back down, giving David a perfect view of his roomie's body. Without thinking, David's eyes roamed over Greg's semi-nudeness. He gasped quietly when his eyes reached the PJ bottoms. Greg's dick had slipped through the fly of his pyjamas, and his morning erection was in full view. Quickly snapping his eyes to Greg's face to see if he was still asleep, he was relieved to see the eyes still closed in slumber. Once again his eyes locked on his roomie's erection. "Nice," he whispered to himself, then jerked his mind back into reality. Almost angrily, he turned his chair back to face the desk and sat in the window sill, staring out onto the quad. The curtains on the window fell back into place behind him. For the first time in a while, he was angry at himself. What the heck was going on? He heard Greg stir again, a whispered, "Ooops," and then louder, "Morning." "Yeah, morning," David replied from behind the curtains, his eyes still focused on the scenery outside. "How long you been up?" Greg asked, his voice tightening as he stretched. "About 45 minutes," David replied. He heard Greg climb down from his bunk, then a hand was on his shoulder. "Had a rough night?" The concern in Greg's voice was noticeable. The hand on his shoulder gave a brief squeeze and was gone. "You tossed and turned all night, man." David shrugged, eyes locked on one of the light poles outside. "Well, I'm gonna take a shower," Greg sighed. He pulled his stuff together and David heard the door close behind him. "You need to get a grip," David mumbled to himself. A brief thought flickered through his head. He had the perfect chance to grip something this morning. Almost immediately, he was disgusted with himself. His mind blank, he was still in the same place when Greg came back into the room. Greg busied himself getting dressed, then walked back over to the window. David remained silent, then Greg murmured, "You know, it can't be that bad." He sighed almost angrily and swung his legs off the sill. "You don't know anything about it," he said quietly, pushing himself upright and brushing by Greg. "I'm going for breakfast, catch ya later." "Hold up, I'll go too." "You know, you really need to quit following me around like a puppy," David spat. Greg's face fell, then clouded over. "You know what? You need to quit being an asshole. I'm trying to help you out here, and...well, just screw it." David turned around, one hand on the doorknob. He wondered for a moment if his face matched Greg's angry glare. "What do you care?" "You know, if you weren't so damn stubborn, you'd see you have a friend here," Greg answered quietly. David was about to spout off again until he noticed the genuine concern on his roomie's face. His anger slipped away. His shoulders slumped slightly, and he met Greg's eyes. "Look, I'm sorry, man. Seriously. Asshole runs in the family." Greg gave him a small grin. "Obviously." "Just got somethin' heavy here," David said, tapping his head. "Look, all I'm sayin' is that if ya wanna talk, I'll listen." "Thanks, but don't think you can help me out on this one," David replied. "Well, whatever," Greg answered. "But don't let it eat ya alive, man." "Wanna eat?" David offered, changing the subject. "Dunno, you gonna stab me with a butter knife or something?" "Nah, a fork, let's go." On their way to the dining hall, Greg offered, "Look, I'm serious. I know you have a lot on your mind and all, and the offer's open anytime." "Thanks, Greg. Like I said, ya can't help me out on this one though." Greg nodded as they entered the queue for their breakfast. Over the meal, they were mainly silent, only chatting briefly about 'normal' subjects pertaining to classes. David's mind continued to mull over his dilemma as he absentmindedly engaged in the brief exchanges with his roommate. "So do you think I'm a selfish person?" he asked Greg out of the blue. Greg choked slightly and swallowed, taking a drink of orange juice before he answered. "Uh, I dunno Dave. Maybe sometimes, but we all are sometimes." "Okay, I've got a hypothetical question for you." "Okay," Greg replied. "Let's say you were a parent." Greg grinned and nodded. Ignoring the grin, David continued, "And you had a son who was like 15 or 16. Now, let's say he was interested in a girl who was older than he was. How would you feel?" "You're dating a 16 year old?" Greg asked. "No, my sister is almost 18 and dating a 15 year old," David steered the question away from himself. "Oh, thought you were robbing the cradle there," Greg chuckled. "I'm serious," David said. "Well, I dunno. What do you think?" "I think it can be okay if they like each other. My parents have a problem with it though." "Mine probably would too," Greg admitted. "But, like if they care for each other, wouldn't it be worth it?" Greg shrugged, "I dunno, man. I'd have to think about it." "Well, time for me to head to class anyway," David admitted, looking at his watch. "Thanks, anyway." "Dave, I'll seriously think about it a little, okay? Just took me by surprise." "Yeah, no problem," David answered, standing up. "Catch ya later." As he walked outside, he was no closer to an answer than before. It was going to be a long few weeks. ****************************************************************************** Well, folks, there ya have it.
