Just took me by surprise." "Yeah, no problem," David answered, standing up. "Catch ya later." As he walked outside, he was no closer to an answer than before. It was going to be a long few weeks. LIFE GOES ON - DAVID AND CHAD #37 - Games David sat at his desk, head in his hands. He was alone in the room. The text book he was reading was spread in front of him, but he hadn't turned a page in almost ten minutes. His discussion with Greg at breakfast wasn't much help for his mind. He sighed and closed the book. His next class was in, looking at the clock, in two hours. He leaned back in the chair, hands locked behind his neck. Voices and activity from next door stirred him out of his reverie. A small grin formed as he listened to the muffled voices of Mark and Vic arguing good-naturedly. The voices got louder then there was a knock at the door. Still smiling, David got up and opened the door. Mark immediately pushed his way into the room, gently punching David in the shoulder. "Well, c'mon in," David laughed. "Don't mind if I do," Mark answered, slipping into David's desk chair. Vic shook his head and followed his roommate inside. "So what are you guys up to?" "Well, Vic seems to think you have something on your mind. And I said that you had to have a mind first." David chuckled. "What's your excuse?" "So what's going on?" Vic asked, closing the door behind him. "Not much, gettin' in some book time. You know same old grind." "Yeah, but that's not what I'm talking about." "Yeah, you dweeb," Mark said from the chair. "Oh, so you've resorted to calling me names, now?" David grinned. "You should hear what we call you when you're not around," Mark answered. "Just got some weirdness going on at home," David replied. "What else is new?" Mark laughed. "Well, my sister is dating a 15-year-old. Has the family kind of weirded out." "Oh, is that all?" Mark answered. "Why is it bugging you this much?" "Don't you think it's weird for an older person to date a younger one?" "Why? It's only a couple of years. Look at it this way, when he's 18, she'll be 21." "Well, I'm glad you're paying attention in math class," David answered with a smile. "Seriously man, you shouldn't be freaked about it. Happens all the time." "My brother," Vic added, "is 23 and dating a 17-year-old." "Really?" "Yeah, he gets teased a lot, but they like each other, so it's not a big deal to them. As long as they're happy, what does it matter?" David shrugged. "Dunno, why do people make such a big deal out of things?" "Keeps 'em from admitting their screw-ups to themselves," Mark answered. Then he grinned. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you were in the same boat." David jerked slightly. "What makes you think that?" he asked warily. Mark shrugged, "Are you?" "Uh, maybe," David answered, flushing slightly. Mark looked at Vic, licked the tip of his finger and swiped it in the air. "Told ya," he directed at his roommate. "So, that's what has you all bummed?" asked Vic. David sat heavily on his bed, "A little, yeah." "Hey man, ya gotta do what ya gotta do," Mark said seriously. "Yeah, but it's sorta selfish, expecting them to 'wait' while I'm down here." "Well, she wouldn't if she didn't want to," Mark answered. "So when did you get so smart?" David grinned. "I've always been smart," Mark replied. Vic snorted. "Well, you hide it well then," David replied. Mark shook his head. "Boy, some appreciation. We come over here to help a friend out and then get slammed," he laughed. David shook his head. "Am I that readable?" "Like a book," Mark grinned. "You come back from a weekend at home, and you're Mr. Gloom and Doom. Wasn't too hard to figure out something was bugging you." "And we had some help," Vic grinned. "Oh? And who might that have been? As if I didn't know." "He shall remain nameless," Mark answered. "Uh huh, betcha it begins with 'G' and ends with 'reg'." Mark shook his head, eyebrows raised in an innocent expression. "So, ya wanna go to lunch?" "The master of changing subjects strikes again," David grinned. "Dave, you need to loosen up, man. You get wound up tight then mope around and worry yourself to death." "Me?" Mark nodded seriously. "Yeah, you. Need to chill out, man. These are the best years of our life," he ended with a snicker. "Damn, you guys are so smart," David laughed. "I'm surrounded by greatness." "Absolutely," Mark replied, rising from the chair and puffing out his chest. David laughed and poked him in the stomach. "Well, if that head will fit out of the door, let's get something to eat." Mark rested his hand on David's shoulder and looked at him seriously. "Look, Dave, I'm serious. You need to quit worrying. You've already had a bad year last year, why make this one the same?" David swallowed and smiled slightly. "Guess you're right, thanks." Mark squeezed his shoulder and dropped his hand. "Of course I'm right," he laughed. Vic rolled his eyes. "Don't get him started. He's already a pain to live with." "Let's eat," David laughed as they exited the room. On the way to the dining hall, David discovered that Greg had caught up with Vic between classes and had 'briefed' him on their earlier conversation. Lunch, and the rest of the day, passed quickly for David. Some things had become clearer in his mind. It still bothered him a little. After all, it wasn't a girl he was involved with - wouldn't his three friends freak if they knew the whole story? The afternoon also gave him a chance to plot his 'revenge' for Greg. It was dark by the time Greg got back to the room. David was studying, highlighting text in his Forestry text. He didn't raise his head as Greg greeted him and placed his books on his desk. Still focused on the book, he said, "So, I understand you had a little talk with Vic?" "Uh, yeah." Holding back his smile, he turned his head to look at his roomie. "Thought I could trust you with a private conversation." Greg's face clouded over slightly. David realized he couldn't push it too far. "Told ya I'd think about it," Greg said evenly. David stood up from his desk and walked toward his roommate. He gestured to his bunk. "Sit, we need to have a little conversation." Greg sat, his body language showing he was ready to fight if necessary. David stood in front of him for a minute, then broke into a grin and pushed Greg back on the bunk straddling him and digging his fingers into Greg's sides. Greg broke into laughter and managed to push David off onto the floor. He sat up and held out a hand. "Okay, stop, no need for that," he chuckled. "Man, I thought you were pissed." David pushed himself up onto his elbows. "Nah, Mark and Vic were by earlier. Just wanted to say thanks." "Some way of showing appreciation," Greg snorted. "Well, I sure wasn't going to kiss you," David laughed. David thought he saw a strange look flicker across Greg's face, but figured he was mistaken as Greg grinned. "Good thing, you probably have bad breath." "Yeah, right," David scoffed, then stood up and held open his arms. "C'mere, baby," he laughed. Greg snickered and slid himself further away. "No way, not til ya brush your teeth," he laughed. "You sure know how to ruin a moment," David complained, dropping his arms and laughing. "You're definitely weird," Greg responded. "Yep, so I've been told," David grinned, moving back to his desk chair and sitting down. "Seriously though, thanks." "Well, you're welcome, I guess," Greg answered, leaning back against the wall behind David's bunk and crossing his legs indian style. A knock on the door interrupted what David was about to say. "It's open. You here again?" he asked with mock exasperation as Mark entered the room. "Sounded like a war going on over here," Mark laughed. "Thought I'd check to see if there were any casualties." "Nah," Greg laughed. "David just wanted to make out with me, that's all." David broke into laughter himself at the shocked look on Mark's face. Mark recovered quickly, and David's laughter increased when Mark replied, "Shoulda taken him up on it, he's good." Then he clasped his hands over his heart and batted his eyes before dissolving into laughter himself. Wiping the tears from his eyes, David said, "If people didn't know better...." "Yeah, yeah," Mark answered. "So you guys cool?" "Yep," Greg replied. "Well, I don't want to ruin a Kodak moment," Mark laughed, then made his exit, closing the door behind him. "He's such a goof," David chuckled. "That makes two of you," Greg replied. "Oh, so now I'm a goof?" David replied, standing up again. "You just stay where you are," Greg laughed. "I don't kiss on the first date." "Whatever you say," he answered, sitting back down and turning his attention back to the textbook. Greg remained silent for a few minutes, then slid off of David's bunk. He put a hand on David's neck. "You okay?" Without thinking, David tilted his head back onto Greg's hand. Then realizing what he was doing he snapped back. "Uh yeah, sorry, had to stretch." Greg chuckled and squeezed his neck briefly. "S'okay, no big deal." His hand stayed in place another second, then dropped away, but he remained behind David. "Dunno how you can read all that about trees." David smiled. "Well, this summer I worked for a forester. It was pretty cool. Always liked the woods and all." "Whatever spices your pickle," Greg snorted. He patted David on the shoulder, then sat back in his previous position on David's bunk. "You might be surprised," David snickered. He sat there a few more minutes before he felt Greg's eyes boring into him. Keeping his head still, he slid his eyes over to catch a glimpse. Greg was staring at him, a thoughtful expression on his face. He sighed, and turned his head toward his roomie. "What?" "What, what?" "Sheeesh, you sit there staring at me with a weird expression and you have to ask?" "A weird expression?" "Yeah, like you were trying to bore into my head." "Oh, sorry, I was just thinking about something." "Care to share?" "Umm, not really," then Greg slid off his bunk and walked to his closet. "Gonna hit the showers, comin'?" "Nah, not this time," David answered, flicking his eyes over Greg's now shirtless torso. "Well, suit yourself," Greg grinned, then stepped out of his jeans and underwear. David turned his attention back to his studying as Greg slipped on his bathrobe and grabbed his shower stuff. "Sure?" "Yeah, sure, go ahead. I'll take one in the morning, I guess." "Okay, later," Greg replied, then was out the door. David glanced at the clock. Nine-thirty. He could get a couple more minutes in then hit the sack. But his concentration wasn't there. His thoughts kept coming back to Chad and, somewhat surprisingly, Greg. He figured he'd need to talk with Chad sometime soon about what he was feeling. Get it out in the open and see what happened. He smiled a bit, thinking of the teen's reaction to his worrying. One thing down, one to go...Greg. He sighed quietly. Greg was certainly good-looking. He could definitely be fun to mess around with, but that wasn't exactly fair. And, David thought, way too dangerous. Greg acted like he was playing a game - one that David both appreciated and didn't. If he knew for sure Greg was 'different,' maybe. Chad's concerned voice came back to him from the weekend, "You gonna do this with him?" Well, the answer was still no, but if Greg wanted to play his games, then David was going to play along. He chuckled to himself, and closed his textbook and turned off his desk lamp. He stripped and slid on his shorts, grabbed one of the books he got over the weekend and slid into his bunk. He pulled the sheet up to his thighs and propped his head on a pillow and began to read. A few minutes later, he heard Greg walking back up the hallway. Greg entered the room and noticing David was reading, turned off the overhead light. "Decide you had enough?" Greg asked. David laughed. "Yeah, couldn't concentrate." "Oh, well, if I disturbed you, I'm sorry," Greg replied. David heard him take off the bathrobe and slide his bureau drawer open, slipping on his pyjama bottoms. "Nah, no big deal," David answered, then reached down to scratch his crotch through the shorts as Greg turned toward the beds. He grinned as Greg did a small double-take at his actions. "Sorry man, when ya got an itch ya gotta scratch." "Uh yeah, I guess so," Greg answered, his eyes darting back to David's face. David finished scratching, shrugged and turned back to his book. "Told ya you should have taken a shower," Greg chuckled. "Yeah well, thought I might take advantage of your naked body if I did," David answered nonchalantly. "Ummm, yeah, right." "Well, you know, didn't get any over the weekend and a hole is a hole, ya know?" David kept his eyes locked on the pages in front of him. He knew if he looked at Greg, he'd break out into laughter. "Uh, not really," Greg answered quietly, still standing in his original position. "Sure it is, don't tell me you've never messed around with another guy before," David teased. "None of your business, Dave," Greg answered angrily. "Oh, so you have then?" David's attention was still locked on his book. "I said, none of your business." "Awww, c'mon, you can tell me. I really don't care." "What the hell has gotten into you?" Greg asked. "Are you turning queer?" Finally David could stand it no longer. He turned to see Greg standing next to his desk, poised as if to jump on him and start swinging. He chuckled at his roommate. "Chill out, man. I was only givin' you a hard time." "Huh?" "Just messin' with ya," David admitted, grinning. "That's all." Greg's expression was comical. He didn't know whether to be upset or take David at his word. "Messin' with me?" "Yeah, that's all it was. Didn't think I was serious, did ya?" "For a minute I did," Greg admitted, now smiling. "Well, you're always tellin' me to lighten up. So what's good for the goose is good for the gander," David laughed. "You're a dick," Greg observed, still smiling. David laughed and groped himself. "Yep, right here waiting for ya." "You wish." David shrugged. "Nah, wishes don't come true anyway." Greg exhaled loudly. "Man, you had me worried." David watched as Greg walked to the foot of the beds and climbed into the upper bunk. He slid the sheet up to his stomach, the game was over. Greg's movements in the upper bunk settled as he got comfortable. "Sorry to freak ya out," David offered, turning off his reading light. Greg leaned over the edge of the top bunk and grinned. "No, you're not." David chuckled. "Well, ya gotta admit, it was pretty good, huh?" Greg shook his head, then pulled it back up, settling into his bunk again. "And no, I never have." "Huh?" "Messed around with another guy, it's queer." "Whatever you say," David answered, surprised at the revelation. "You don't think so?" David realized the tables had turned yet again. Now he was on the defensive. "Like you said earlier, none of your business." "Well, we all know what that means," Greg replied from above. "Do we now?" "Sure, you have done it." "None of your business." "Who with? Mark? Or Vic? Or someone else at home?" "Shut up, Greg. You don't know what you're talking about," David hissed. Then Greg's head was back over the edge of his bunk. He chuckled. "Just messin' with ya." "Bite me," David replied, upset that he had fallen for it again. "You wish," Greg laughed again. "Whatever," David answered and rolled onto his side. "I've got an eight-thirty tomorrow, gonna get some sleep." "Okay, man. Night." David didn't answer, he was still angry at the turnabout Greg had accomplished. "That was real dumb," he thought to himself. "Dave?" "What?" "You okay?" "I'm fine, just TRYING to go to sleep." "Oh, sorry." "S'okay Greg, no big deal. Still got a lot of stuff on my mind." "Okay, well, didn't mean to make ya mad." "Me either, man." There was a pause from Greg, then he softly asked, "Ummm, have you?" "What?" David sighed, exasperated. "Never mind," Greg answered. David heard him roll around for a few seconds trying to get comfortable. "Night, man," David said. "Uh huh." David thought about the conversation fro a few more minutes. After Greg's reaction, there was no way he was going to admit to anything. It would definitely freak out his roommate and then it would be all over the dorm. No sense in starting anything like that, David thought, then slowly drifted off into a slightly restless sleep. Well, I definitely apologize for taking so long to answer some of y'all's mail. Lots of stuff going on in Fuppie's world right now. Hopefully soon, things will settle out a little. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback.
