Fup ****************************************************************************** FROM CHAPTER 39 Mark laughed and punched Greg lightly on the shoulder, "Whatever floats your boat. C'mon, Dave." "See ya later, Greg. Just take it easy, I'll be back in a little." "Okay, thanks," Greg replied, grimacing as he lifted his mattress back onto the bed. "Think I'm gonna take a nap." "Good idea," David agreed. He patted Greg's shoulder, and followed Mark out the door. LIFE GOES ON - DAVID AND CHAD #40 - Sweet Sixteen The steering wheel was taking a beating. The magnets on the car speakers were suffering the same fate. It was Friday afternoon, and David was northbound on the interstate. Aerosmith was followed by Kiss as the miles melted away. He had skipped his last class today so he could get home in time to do some things before Chad's party. Chad's gift was in the backseat. David had added a thing or two in the last couple of days, leaving enough extra for the 'other' gift he had planned. His grin was reflected in the rearview as he thought about the surprise. He hoped that the Murrays would go along with the idea. "It pays to have connections," he laughed to himself. Although, it could all come crumbling down if Chad's parents didn't agree. The smile faded slightly. It was a definite possibility, but he'd cross that bridge when he came to it. Foreigner replaced Kiss in the tape deck as David entered the outskirts of DC. Within an hour, he was exiting the highway and pulling into the motel parking lot. Entering the lobby, he asked for the owner, who was the father of another friend he met in Scouts. "Well, David, hello. Jerry said you'd be stopping by," Mr. Frost greeted him. "Hi Mr. Frost, yeah, Jer said to ask for you, and well, here I am," David finished a little lamely. "Well, it's no problem, since it's kind of out of season." Mr. Frost was filling out the paperwork, then looked up. "Twin beds?" David laughed. "Yeah, it's not a girl. Just a friend of mine who's turning 16 today. We normally go camping, but it's a little chilly out." "Ahhh, someone from Scouts?" "No, we live just down the road from each other, met a couple years ago, been a real good friend. So I thought I'd treat him to a fancy smancy night." Mr. Frost chuckled. "Well, I appreciate the thought of fancy smancy." He slid the paper across the counter to David, who signed it. "Okay, then David, we'll see you tomorrow night. Tell your dad and mom hello from us." "No sweat, Mr. Frost. Thanks." David slid the money across the desk. "Thanks for the break, never would have been able to do this without it." "Well, like I said, we've only got a few cottages rented. So it's no problem. Some money is better than no money." "Yeah, guess you're right. I'll get the key tomorrow when we get here." "Okay David, if you have any problems, let me know." "Cool, thanks," David replied, then was heading back to the car. He sighed, well, one thing out of the way. He said a quick prayer as he started the car and started toward the Murray's. He ended up behind the school bus as soon as he turned onto his road. Following the start and stop progress of the bus until it got to Chad's driveway, David grinned as he saw Chad exit the bus and without a glance back, started walking down his driveway. David waited until the bus was gone before turning into the driveway and gunning the car toward Chad's retreating back. Chad never turned as David hit the brakes a few feet away. He raised his eyebrows as Chad continued walking, not looking back. David eased the car up closer, then Chad turned, yelled and leapt on the hood. David laughed and brought the car to a stop. "Get off the merchandise," he said through the windshield. "Make me." "If I have to come out there, you're in deep trouble, mister." Chad stuck out his tongue. "So that's the way it is, huh?" Chad nodded, grinning. "Well, then," David replied, then reversed slowly back down the driveway. When he reached the road, he stopped and put the car in Park. "Now you have to walk all that way again," David laughed. Chad slid off the hood and walked to the driver's window. "No, I don't. I've got a ride." David looked around. "Where?" Chad snorted and walked around to the passenger's side, reaching for the door handle. David quickly put the car in gear and moved forward a few feet. Chad grimaced and walked to the door again. David repeated the performance. The third time, David allowed Chad to open the door and slip into the passenger's seat. "You're a dweeb, know that?" Chad complained. "No, I'm the driver." "Is that what you call it?" "Sure is." Then David smiled warmly. "Happy birthday, kiddo." "Well, I hope that wasn't my present." "Nope, this is your present," David answered, then backed down the driveway again. Chad rolled his eyes, and punched David in the shoulder. "Owww, that's a heckuva way to treat your chauffeur." "See? I knew you'd take me up to the house," Chad crowed, laughing. "The things you trick me into," David mock-complained. "I'm the best," Chad laughed. "Yeah, ya are," David replied seriously. "So let's go." "Okay, jeeez, patience kiddo. We have all weekend." "Yeah, and you're wasting it." David shook his head and drove to the house. "So when's the party?" "Ummm, mom said like seven." "Cool, that'll give me a chance to slip by and see mom and Lynn," David teased. "Owww." "That'll learn ya," Chad laughed. "Durn ya," David finished. "Whatever you say. You're the old wise man," Chad laughed and bolted out of the car, running toward the house. David sighed, retrieved his bag and Chad's present - the original one - then walked to the house. He rang the bell and was answered with Mrs. Murray's voice telling him to come in. He tried the knob, but the door was locked. He rang the bell again and got the same response. "It's locked," he yelled through the closed door. He heard Mrs. Murray's footsteps as she came to the door and almost screamed as Chad jumped on his back. He stumbled into the door as it opened and ended up face down in the foyer with Chad on his back, laughing uproariously. "Chad Murray, you'd better settle down and let poor David up, before we take back your presents," Karen warned the still laughing teen. "S'okay," David grunted, "pay backs will be required." Then he grinned and added, "Hope he didn't break his present." Chad immediately stood up, apologizing profusely. Karen shook her head and walked back to the kitchen. "Nice to see you again, David," she smiled over her shoulder. "Same here," David answered, pushing himself upright. Chad was standing against the wall with a worried expression. When David rose to his feet, he pushed the door closed and turned to grin at the teenager. "Did it?" Chad asked. "What?" "Break." David shrugged and shook the wrapped package. "Dunno, kiddo. Maybe. Guess ya won't know til ya open it." "Oh man, I'm sorry." David chuckled. "For what? Breaking your gift, or scaring the bejesus out of me?" "Ummm, both." David started laughing. "Yeah right." "Well, it sounded good," Chad answered with a small grin. "C'mere," David smiled. He hugged the teen briefly. "Happy 16th, kiddo." "Thanks," Chad replied. "C'mon up." Then he was racing up the steps. "Pay backs," David mumbled and walked into the kitchen. "Karen, I have a question." "Yes, David?" "Umm, well, it was kinda cool that Chad and I went camping on my birthday. I thought I'd repay the favor." "Well, David, that would be fine, but it's supposed to get a little chilly. It IS October," she finished with a smile. "Yeah, well, I didn't mean tonight or anything, but tomorrow night. And well, I thought we stay at Frost's in one of the cabins. They have fireplaces and all." David trailed off in expectation of her denial. Mrs. Murray remained silent for a few seconds. "That's awful expensive, isn't it?" "Not really, I got a deal through the owner's son. He's a member of Scouts." "Oh, so you've already made the reservations?" David flushed. "Uh, well, yeah, sorry if it's not okay. I can cancel them if it's not." "That's a nice thought, David. Let me run it past Matt, and we'll see." "Umm, okay. I'm really sorry if I overstepped my bounds." "No, that's not it, David," Karen smiled. "I just don't want you spending all this money on Chad. You do it a lot." "Well, it's sort of a birthday present." "Well, I don't see a problem, David. But we'll wait and see what Matt says. Have you said anything to Chad?" "No, didn't think it'd be a good idea. Kinda wanted it to be a surprise too." "Well...," Karen started, then they were interrupted by Chad. "What surprise?" "None of your business, young man," Karen advised. "David and I were just discussing some things, that's all." Chad looked at both of them, trying to read their expressions, then shrugged. He grabbed David's arm. "C'mon." Karen made shooing motions with her hands. "Go David. The kid has been in rare form all week waiting for today." David laughed and followed Chad upstairs to his room. "You're a goof, you know that?" David asked. "Yeah, your goof," Chad answered semi-seriously. "Stuck with ya huh?" "If you wanna be." "Well, I could think of a lot worse things to be stuck to," David smiled. Chad snorted. "Thanks." "You're welcome." Chad moved toward the closet, then turned and crooked his finger at David. The older boy raised his eyebrows and walked to his boyfriend who immediately hugged him tightly. "Missed you," the teen mumbled into David's shoulder. "Yeah, missed you too, kiddo," David answered. He took a quick glance out the door, then pushed Chad away slightly and looked into his face. "Love you too, ya know." Chad nodded and kissed David briefly on the lips. "Me too." Chad then released his arms and sat on his bed. David pulled out the desk chair and straddled it, his arms propped on the backrest. "So whatcha been up to, kiddo?" They spent the next few minutes catching up to the events over the last month. Then David dropped his voice. "Chad, listen, we can't do anything here at your house, man. At least inside." "Why not? We did last time." "Yeah, I know. I loved it," David grinned and continued. "Did you ever think of what would have happened if your parents came home early? There's no way we would have heard them." David watched a look of horror cross the teen's face. "Oh man, I never thought of that." David chuckled softly. "S'okay man, really. But I don't think we can take the chance any more." "But, it's getting cold out," Chad complained. "Well, we'll think of something," David offered. "I hope so." "We will," David assured. "I mean we can still like hug and stuff, your parents are used to that by now, but anything else is out." "Oh man," Chad responded softly, obviously still turning the mental picture of them getting caught over in his mind. David reached over and ran a finger down Chad's cheek. "Don't sweat it, kiddo. We'll figure something out. And anyway, it's your birthday." "Yeah. Sixteen today," Chad answered. "Sweet 16," David laughed softly. It took a few seconds for Chad to figure out the comment, then he grinned. "Sweet, huh?" "Certainly." "If you say so." "Sure do. Trust me." "Do I have a choice?" Chad laughed. "You always do," David replied seriously. "I know," Chad nodded. "It's cool." "Good." David continued filling Chad in on the events over the last few weeks. He noticed the look on his boyfriend's face as he described the happenings with Greg. "Look, man, nothing is ever gonna happen, Chad." "You sure?" "Yeah, he just confuses me too much." "And I don't?" Chad chuckled, his worry fading. "All the time. But I know how to solve that." "Oh really?" Chad challenged. During their conversation, David had shifted position on the chair, sitting sideways. Now he used his position to jump on Chad and dig his fingers into the teen's ribs. "Told ya," David growled as Chad erupted into peals of laughter, writhing on the bed trying to get away. "Stop it," he gasped. David expanded his attack to Chad's armpits and knees until Chad was breathless. He relented slightly, letting the boy catch his breath. "Now, who's the old wise man?" "You....are," Chad gasped. "Old?" David asked, curling his fingers into Chad's ribs again. "Okay, okay, okay," Chad gasped. "You're not old." "Say it like you mean it," David teased. "You're...not...old," Chad replied through his laughter. "Well, now that we have that settled, guess I can let ya up." Chad nodded forcefully. David gave him one last poke, then rolled off the teen and sat on the edge of the bed. Chad joined him a few seconds later, red-faced and still panting for breath. "Not fair that you're not ticklish." David chuckled. "I used to be, big time. Guess I outgrew it." "Maybe I will." "Hope not," David grinned. "Have to come up with some sort of other torture when you get out of line." "Yeah, right," Chad scoffed, sliding further away from David. They spent the next few minutes silently enjoying each other's company, then Karen was calling them for supper. They washed up and joined Matt and Karen at the table. "Welcome back home," Matt offered with a smile. "Thanks, wouldn't have missed this birthday for anything," David smiled back. "Can Dave and I go hiking tomorrow?" "As long as you dress warm. It's supposed to be cold," Karen answered. "And as long as you get your chores done." "But it's my birthday," Chad griped. "I shouldn't have any chores." "Tough luck," Matt laughed. "Can't get out of it that easily." Chad rolled his eyes and sighed, digging into the food on his plate. The rest of the meal passed in easy and good-natured conversation, David filling the elder Murrays in on the past weeks of school. "You know," he offered, "they're having some sort of family day next month. Maybe you all could come down, give the kid an idea of what college is like. It's during the week though, so that the families can go to classes with their kids." "Well, maybe Karen can bring him down," Matt said. "Might be a good idea." "We'll see," Karen replied, shooting a 'settle down' glare at her youngest, who was nodding vigorously. "Just let us know when, David, and we'll see what we can work out." "Cool. Definitely." "Awww, c'mon, mom," Chad finally managed. "Please?" "I said we'll think about it, Chad." David nudged Chad's leg under the table. The teen looked at David, then turned to his mother. "Okay, I hope we can though, it would be cool." "We'll see what we can work out." "Cool." After supper, the four retired to the living room. David was anticipating a rush of teenagers for Chad's party, but was surprised when seven rolled around and no one else showed up. His eyebrows furrowed at Matt and Karen, who replied that Chad didn't want a big party. They added that some friends and family would be there the next afternoon for lunch and gifts. David looked at Chad, who shrugged and grinned. The elder Murrays left for a few minutes and returned with wrapped packages, setting them in front of Chad. The teen grinned and did what kids do best - open presents. After the shirts, pants, underwear (which brought a flush to Chad's face) and various other gifts were opened, they brought in one more larger one. Chad's questioning look was soon replaced by excitement as he opened it to find a cassette deck to add to his stereo. "Wow, cool!" Chad enthused. "Can I set it up now?" David laughed. "Whatcha gonna play?" "Oh yeah," Chad answered. David laughed and retrieved his own present. Chad opened it to find Styx's 'Grand Illusion' and the double 'Yessongs' cassettes. "COOL!" Chad yelled, then settled down a little with a sheepish expression. Matt and Karen laughed, then passed him another present. "This is from Cindy." Chad opened Cindy's gift to find two more cassettes. For once, the teen was speechless. Then he turned to David, "How did you know what I was getting?" David laughed and gestured toward his parents. Chad shook his head and rose to hug Matt and Karen, then settled into David's lap, surprising the older boy. "Chad, you're crushing the poor guy," Matt laughed. Chad hugged David tightly, then stood up. "Thanks, really, this is so cool." "Well, kiddo, wanna set it up?" "Yeah! Let's go." Then Chad was up the steps with his cassettes, leaving the deck in the living room. David and the Murrays laughed together. David picked up the deck and was heading toward the steps when Matt stopped him. "David, I understand you want to take Chad 'camping' tomorrow." "Uh yeah, sorta." "Well, it's fine with us. Are you gonna tell him?" David breathed a mental sigh of relief. "Nah, thought it'd be a surprise." "Well, I'm glad everyone is coming early tomorrow then," Matt laughed. "Or we would have had to say no." "No sweat," David replied, relieved. "Well, go get the kid set up," Matt laughed. "Or he'll be down here hounding us for keeping you." David laughed. "Thanks, guys, a lot." "Just get up there," Matt replied. David nodded and made his way to Chad's room. He laughed as Chad almost ran into him on his way out to track him down. "It's about time," Chad griped. "Poor guy," David grinned. "C'mon, let's get this thing hooked up." They spent the next few minutes hooking the tape deck into the stereo. When all the wires were connected, David moved to sit with his back against the bed as Chad slipped a cassette into the deck. As the 'Grand Illusion' started, Chad moved to sit beside him. David grinned and closed his eyes, listening to the music. A while later, he felt Chad get up and flip the tape, then resume his former position, this time pressed against David's side. As the tape ended, they were startled by a voice from the doorway. "Turn it down to a low roar, Chad, and close your door. Your mother and I are going to bed. David, the sofa is ready for you. So whenever you get tired of Chad's new toy, you're set." David chuckled. "Thanks, Matt. I'll see ya tomorrow." "Night guys." "Night, dad." Chad got up and closed the door after his father had left. He slipped another cassette into the deck and turned the volume down. As 'Firebird Suite' began, Chad snuggled against David, who draped his arm over the teen's shoulders, pulling him even closer. "I like this," Chad murmured. David tightened his arm in response, remaining silent. Chad shifted slightly and David opened his eyes to see Chad's brown eyes staring at him. "What?" David whispered. "Nothing." David twisted his head to make sure the door was closed, then pressed his lips against Chad's. The teen relaxed into the kiss, their tongues leisurely exploring. David pulled slightly away first. "Love you kiddo." Chad nodded and moved to lean his head against David's shoulder. The music continued as David held Chad against him. He smiled as he felt Chad's breathing deepen. He let the teen sleep until the last song on the side was finished. He gently shook Chad's shoulder. "Hey kiddo." "Huh?" "Get some sleep man." "Mmmkay, you gonna stay?" Chad asked sleepily. "Not tonight, kiddo. Wouldn't get much sleep, ya know?" "Mmmmkay," Chad agreed, then slowly stood and began to strip. David watched his boyfriend shed his shirt and pants, then climb into bed. David stood up and knelt down next to the head of Chad's bed. He ran his fingers through Chad's hair, eliciting a small smile. "Night, kiddo. Love you a lot." "Me too," Chad replied. David leaned over and planted a kiss on Chad's forehead, but the teen had slipped back into slumber. David smiled, ran the back of his hand down Chad's cheek and left for his own bed. ****************************************************************************** Being back home was kind of great, ya know? :-) Please feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback.
