Fup ****************************************************************************** FROM CHAPTER 5 "S'ok." David tightened his arm again, silent. Then he whispered, "Don't go anywhere." Chad answered by tightening his arm across David's stomach. Slowly, with Chad's warmth next to him, David drifted back off into a dreamless sleep. LIFE GOES ON - DAVID AND CHAD #6 - Visits His eyeballs were floating. David slid slowly out from under the teenager draped across him, and grinned as Chad mumbled, fluttered his eyelids, and drifted back off to sleep. Grabbing last night's towel off the floor, he quietly walked to the bathroom, wiping the drool off his chest and throwing the towel in one corner of the bathroom. He stood in front of the toilet, relieving himself, then moved to the sink to brush his teeth. Catching a glimpse of himself in the mirror, David had to admit that he looked terrible. He finished brushing his teeth, and turned on the shower. Letting the hot water wash over him, he started feeling a lot better. As the water began to turn colder, he shut off the shower, dried himself off, and looked in the mirror again. Yep, definitely better. He sprayed deodorant, combed his now shorter hair (wow, what a difference!), and walked back to the bedroom where Chad was still asleep. David glanced at the clock as he was quietly pulling on a pair of shorts, it was almost nine-thirty. Chad mumbled in his sleep, drawing David's attention to the bed. He grinned again as Chad shifted and rolled onto his stomach, the blanket sliding down to reveal a glimpse of his butt. He quietly moved to sit on the side of the bed, just content to watch the teen sleep. Dammit, why did he have to go back to school in September? He was lucky again, Chad was definitely someone special. He might be 15, but as David's grandmother said, he had an 'old mind.' He felt kind of strange feeling this way so soon after...well, after. But Chad didn't seem to mind and it felt sort of right. He did love the teenager now sleeping in his bed and was pretty sure Chad felt the same. But was it the same? He moved to rest his back against the headboard, stretching his legs out onto the bed. His gaze once again focused on Chad. He was still worried that he'd do something to mess this up. He'd just have to be careful, that's all. Chad mumbled again and slid his arm to David's side of the bed. When it touched his leg, Chad settled back down. During the next half-hour, David did a lot of thinking. This was obviously going to be another secret. He hated that thought. Why couldn't people just mind their own business? How could he make sure that Chad was happy? Was he just doing this to fill the hole Kel left? He thought a little deeper about that. No, he wasn't using Chad as a replacement. As he told the teen earlier, Chad was Chad and Kel was Kel. But they seemed to be so much alike sometimes. It WAS scary. He knew one thing for sure, though. He'd never compare the two. It wouldn't be fair for either one of them. He fingered the necklace absentmindedly while he was sitting there. Then he reached behind him, unfastening the chain and pulling the necklace from around his neck. He got up and went to the footlocker slipping the necklace into its box. He smiled at the words written on top once more, then closed the locker and went back to sit on the bed. Chad stirred and turned his head in David's direction. David smiled as the teen slitted one eye open, gave a small grin and whispered, "Hey." "Hey yourself," David whispered back, resting his palm on Chad's warm back and rubbing it gently. "Mmmm, that feels good," Chad mumbled, closing his eye again as David continued rubbing. A few seconds later, Chad moved his hand to rest on David's lower leg and gave it a brief squeeze. Eyes still closed, he asked, "You okay?" "Yeah, much, sorry for that." "It's cool," Chad murmured. "Scared me a little though." "Yeah, I bet," David admitted. "It was a weird dream." "Have 'em often?" "A couple times like right after the funeral. Then once or twice since then." Chad sighed a little, then rested his head on David's thigh. "Nice pillow." David laughed softly, "Glad ya think so." Chad smiled and shifted again, rolling onto his side to look up at David. He stared at David's face for a few seconds, smiling. David rubbed Chad's side, then rested his palm on the teen's hip. Chad closed his eyes and then frowned a little. "I gotta go to the bathroom." He slid out of bed, and David chuckled as the naked teen trotted off to the bathroom, his morning erection leading the way. David heard the toilet flush and Chad walked back into the room, all traces of self-consciousness gone. "Like to show-off now, huh?" David teased as Chad slid back under the blankets, his head once again pillowed on David's thigh. Chad grinned and shrugged as his eyes slipped shut again. David rubbed his back a few seconds, then said, "If we're gonna have breakfast, we should think about heading out." "Not really hungry," Chad answered. "Rub my back some more." "Okay, it's your stomach," David laughed, rubbing his palm lightly over Chad's back. "I sorta like this better anyway." "Mmmhmmm," Chad replied, enjoying the massage. "Not going to sleep again, are you?" "Nope, and miss out on a backrub? No way." David continued the backrub for a few minutes, then was interrupted by a knock on the door. Chad jerked away, sliding back under the blankets. "Who the hell?" David wondered out loud. Then he rubbed Chad's back, "Just stay here, and be quiet. I'll close the door." "Okay." David got off the bed, closed the bedroom door, and walked to the kitchen. His father was standing outside, hand poised to knock a second time. What the hell? He cracked open the kitchen door. "Hi dad." "David," his father nodded. "Can I come in?" "It's a bad time, dad. I've got company, maybe this afternoon?" His dad grinned, "Now I know why you moved out, is she good-looking?" David was slowly boiling. "Dad, it's not a good time," he repeated. "Now, could you please leave?" "I knew you'd be a chip off the block," his dad gloated. "Dad, I need to get back to my company. I'll talk to you later." "Okay, David, just remember, we don't want any grandkids yet." "Don't worry about that, dad. I'll see you later," David replied, closing the door on his father. He watched as his dad walked back to his truck, and seeing David watching, flashed a wink and a thumbs-up at him. David calmly watched the truck pull out of the parking lot, then walked back to the bedroom, finding Chad now completely dressed, sitting on the bed. "Who was it?" "My father," David snorted. "Thinks I'm making babies." Chad burst into laughter. "He what?" "He thinks I'm screwing some girl here. Warned me about not having kids." "Are you serious?" "As a heart attack," David grinned wryly. Chad shook his head, still grinning. Then he looked across at David and crooked his finger. David slid onto the bed and Chad wrapped him in a hug. David hugged back, then Chad surprised him again by kissing him, sliding his tongue into David's mouth. It only lasted a few seconds before Chad pulled away laughing. "You should have seen the look on your face," he chortled. "What?" "When I kissed you. I thought your eyeballs were gonna fall out." "Took me by surprise, that's all," David said. "Damn. Now, come here." Chad laughed and slid further away. "Remember, we can't have babies yet." Then he was rolling on the bed in gales of laughter. David grinned and pounced on the laughing teen. He tickled him for a few seconds, then Chad rolled onto his back, and grinned up at David. "So now whatcha gonna do?" he panted. "This," David answered, and lowered his face to kiss Chad, whose grin faded as he closed his eyes. David tried to put all his feelings into the kiss, and after a minute or so, pulled back to look into Chad's face. Chad opened his eyes, wiped his mouth, and said, "Wow, that was real nice." "I had a lot of practice," David informed with a smile. Then he laughed, "And what the heck happened to poor, shy Chad?" The teenager just shrugged. "Dunno. Which one you like better?" "I like 'em both." "Oh." Then Chad's stomach rumbled. It was David's turn to break out into laughter. "Thought you weren't hungry?" "Well, I really wasn't. And I can always eat when I get home. No sense in spending your money on breakfast." "Why not?" David asked. "You don't have to spend money on me, I have my own." "I know I don't, but what about if I want to?" "Well, I'm sorta hungry then," Chad grinned. "Okay then, let's go to Flanigan's for breakfast. They still have the buffet?" "Yeah, but it's not Flanigan's any more. It's Carbaugh's" "Guess I've been gone too long," David admitted, sliding off of Chad and offering a hand up. As Chad took his hand, David pulled hard, causing the teen to end up face to face with him. He grinned and hugged Chad tightly. "Thanks for last night," he mumbled. "Anytime," Chad replied, returning David's hug. His stomach rumbled again. "Umm, we'd better go, huh?" "Guess so," David grinned. The breakfast buffet was as good as David remembered. Both of them ate their fill, sighing contentedly as they pushed their plates away. David grinned at Chad, "I cook a mean breakfast, huh?" "Sure do," Chad responded. "You could almost open a restaurant." David snickered and paid the bill, then started the drive to Chad's. They were almost at the house before Chad moaned, "Oh no, I forgot my stuff." "And you call ME absentminded," David laughed. They pulled to a stop, and got out, walking over to where Mr. and Mrs. Murray were pulling weeds. Noticing the semi-forlorn look on Chad's face, Mrs. Murray asked, "What's got you down?" "I forgot my stuff." "You forget your head if it wasn't attached," joked his dad. "No matter, you'll be going back over again, I assume?" "I don't know, Mr....err, Matt, he snores," David laughed. "I do NOT! You're the one who snores." The Murrays laughed at the exchange, then Mrs. Murray asked, "Was he good company, David? He wasn't a pain in the butt?" "Nah, he can come over anytime, we had a good time," David replied risking a quick sideways hug. He turned toward the house when he heard the front door slam. Cindy blushed as she walked toward them, "Hi David." "Umm, hey Cindy. Wow, you've grown up," then he laughed a little in embarrassment, "I mean, well..." Cindy laughed, the ice broken. "Thanks. Lynn says you have your own place now." "Yeah, moved out last week. It's pretty nice. Your brother actually picked it out," he smiled. "That's neat," she replied. Then she turned to her parents, "I'm heading to work, need anything from the store when I come home?" Getting a negative reply, she smiled at David, "See ya later." "Yep, later. Good to see you again." After she had gone, Chad poked him in the side, "She looooves you." His observation made his parents chuckle and shake their heads. "I dunno," David replied. "Hope not, cos I'm sorta going out with someone else right now." Chad started coughing, and Mrs. Murray shot her youngest a concerned glance and said, "Well, she's a lucky girl, David. Treat her right." "Yeah, definitely a pretty special person. And no need to worry about me treating them right, it won't be a problem," David answered, playing the game. Chad quit coughing and was looking at David strangely. David shot a small grin at him, then said his farewells. Chad was still staring after the car when he looked in the mirror, making him chuckle as he headed toward his parents'. He pulled in the driveway behind his father's truck. At breakfast, David had decided to pay them a visit so he wouldn't have to deal with it later that afternoon. He noticed the absence of his mother's car, then his dad was coming from around the corner of the house with the push mower. "Hey dad, what's up?" "Gettin' ready to mow. So did you get your girl home okay?" "Yeah, I got 'em home okay. So what did you want this morning?" "Well, just wanted you to know that I think you're making a mistake by moving out. You hurt your mom pretty bad, David." "So I've been told," David answered. THIS had been a mistake. "I want you to come back and live here. We forgive you for what you said." "Excuse me?" David asked incredulously. "I said that we forgive you for those nasty things you said." "I heard you the first time. Just couldn't believe my ears, that's all. I'd better go." "You know David, you could show us a little appreciation. Even just a little would be nice." This was surreal. He gaped at his father, who was still going on about how David didn't give a shit about them, didn't care that he upset them by moving out within two days of his arrival back home, and so on. As his father wound down from his spiel, David shook his head. "You know dad, I guess you're right. I don't give a shit. But you know what else, I had a damn good teacher." With those parting words, he turned to go back to his car. He heard his father walk up behind him and swung around to see one pissed off man. David's father stuck his finger into his face, "Don't you EVER talk like that to me again." David was a little scared. He had probably crossed a line here. But he met his dad's angry glare and replied calmly, "Don't worry, I won't." Then he sidled toward his car, keeping one eye on his still seething father. He started the car and began backing out of the driveway. He stopped and stuck his head out the window, "Dad, I would really appreciate you all calling before you come over." He pulled his head back in and finished backing out, then drove back toward his apartment. He flopped into the living room chair, and said to the empty air, "Well, THAT went real well." Then he started laughing, releasing the tension he had felt since he decided to stop by his parents' house. He shook his head, wiped his eyes, then thought he'd call his grandmother. He dialed and the phone rang six or seven times before his grandmother answered. "Hi, Nanny, thought I'd come to see you later this afternoon." "Well, hello there," came her raspy voice. "I've got company right now, so later would probably be fine." David noticed two things, the emphasis on 'company,' and the failure to use his name. "Is mom there?" "Yes, but they'll be leaving in a little while." "Oh, okay, ummm, how about six?" "I think that would be fine." "Okay, see you then, Nanny. Love you." "Me too," she replied, and he could hear the smile. Then he was listening to the dial tone. He hung up the phone and looked at the clock. It was only two. He looked around the apartment, what to do? He wandered into the bedroom, noticing he and Chad's discarded clothes. Laundry, that's it. He dug through his closet and grabbed his rucksack, stuffing the dirty clothes and used towels into it. He was almost out the door when he remembered the detergent. Sheeesh. He had done enough laundry at college to know what he was doing. Making sure he had all he needed this time, he closed and locked the door, threw the bag and detergent into the backseat and set out for the laundromat. He discovered in the two hours he was there, he'd definitely have to bring his own reading material. Obviously not too many guys used the place. Looking around, he found himself being watched humourously by the female patrons as they did their own washing and drying. After everything was dry, he folded the clothes to what seemed to be surprise from the others, shot them a wry grin and left. "They must have thought I was just gonna stuff everything back in the bag," he thought. When he arrived back home, he cleared out a bureau drawer and used it to store Chad's clothes he had left. Then grinning, he removed the briefs from the drawer, stuffed them back in Chad's bag, and put the bag on the top shelf of the closet. "Pay backs, Chad, pay backs," he chuckled to himself. His stomach rumbled, four-thirty, he turned on the oven, and slipped a TV dinner into it, turning on the stereo and grabbing a book to read until it was ready. Finally it was time to go see his grandmother. As he pulled into her driveway, he was relieved to see his mother's car gone. He wasn't halfway up the porch steps before the door was pulled open and his grandmother was standing there with her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face. "Uh, Hi Nanny." His grandmother humphed and looked him up and down. "I see you got your hair cut." "Yeah, it was getting to be a pain." She nodded. Boy, she could sure be intimidating when she wanted to be. "Well, I suppose you want to come in and eat me out of house and home?" "That's what grandsons are for," David answered with a smile. Her face broke into a smile and she held out her arms. "It's about time you came to see this old lady." David hugged her tightly and kissed her cheek. "Yeah, I missed you too." "Well, come in, come in, I made chocolate chip cookies. And while you're inhaling them, you can tell me what has this family in an uproar. But don't talk with your mouth full, you hear?" "Yes, ma'am," David agreed laughing. His grandmother led him out to the kitchen which was filled with the aroma of her afternoon of baking. She placed a plate of still-warm cookies in front of him with a glass of milk, then sat across from him with hot tea and a cigarette, smiling as he tore into the cookies. David polished off a half-dozen, then took a swig of milk, and sat back in the chair. "Well, what have you heard?" "Oh no you don't, young man. I want to hear it from the horse's mouth." It took him almost half an hour to relate his story to her. When he was finished, he grabbed another cookie as she thought about what he had told her. A few minutes later, she grabbed his glass and poured another glass of milk. She placed in within reach and took a sip of her tea. She stared at him for a bit, then obviously seeing what she wanted, smiled. "That's what I thought. So you actually moved out two days after you got home?" she chuckled. "Bet that got their panties in a bunch." David almost choked on the swallow of milk he had in his mouth. He quickly swallowed as best he could and started coughing. When he had recovered, he asked, "So I'm right?" "I don't know if it's right or not, David. Some things can't be called either right or wrong, they just are. You did what you had to do is the only answer I can give you." "Okay." "Your mother has a hard time letting go of anything, David. But I think she's trying to understand. She was here for almost four hours today." "Wow," David replied, surprised. "Yes, wow, as you so eloquently put it. So tell me, how are you really doing? I've been worried." "Well, it's hard losing your best friend, I guess. We were pretty tight. It hurts and makes me laugh at the same time, sometimes." At her nod, he continued, "I dunno, it's just like when I got home, everything came crashing down. I miss him a lot, but I'm doing okay." "Good. You've got your grandfather's hard-headedness," she grinned. "And maybe some of mine too." David laughed, and she went on. "Just don't shut people out, especially those that mean a lot to you. You'll rot." David nodded, "I'm not, really. I have a pretty good bunch of friends. Both here and at school. Makes it better." "Give your mom and dad some time to get used to the fact that their little David has grown up. They'll come around. Your mom is starting already. So are you staying for supper?" David chuckled, "I thought you'd never ask." "Well, you can stay on one condition. You have to help. TV dinners are fine once in a while, but you'll waste away to nothing if you don't eat right." "Well, bachelorhood is pretty cool, but leaves a lot to be desired sometimes," David answered. "You'll do okay, David. I have no doubt about that. Now, let's get going." David got his first of many cooking lessons that day. He was sure he'd never be a gourmet chef, but he took instruction well and soon felt confident enough to try his hand at cooking something for a visitor or two sometime in the future. As always, the meal was filling and, as his grandmother put it, 'up to his high standards.' The serious discussion finished, he talked with his grandparents about everyday matters, school, housekeeping, and the like. By the time the meal was over and he was helping wash up, he felt better than he had all day. As he dried the last plate, he gave a small belch, and grinned at his grandmother, "'Scuse me, but it was excellent." "Well, it's not magic," his grandmother laughed. "Guess not." Then he asked a final question. "What do you think I should do?" She turned to him, and smiled, "Live your life, no one else's. That's about it." He hugged her and kissed her forehead. "Thanks." "Well, how about some ice cream?" She frowned in confusion at David's laughter, then joined him when he explained about the melted ice cream. "Well, I do keep mine in the freezer, David. It should be okay. You men always need someone to take care of you. You know that?" she joked. "Guess we do," David agreed. "That's why I have you." She smiled at David's comment, then they walked into the living room where his grandfather was watching TV. When the phone rang about eight that evening, David was getting ready to leave. He waited until she came back before saying goodbye, but she stopped him. "Sounds like you had some more excitement this afternoon. That was your mother again." He briefly explained the incident with his father that afternoon. He was a little surprised at her synopsis of the whole thing. "What an ass." He laughed and kissed her goodbye, promising to give her a call to come visit. "You can make supper, then," she joked. "Guess we'll be eating out, you like McDonald's?" "Aren't you gone yet?" she laughed. "Love you too, Nanny, thanks." "Be careful driving, young man. Don't want to read about you in the newspaper." "I will, night." "Night, David." She stood on the porch as he drove up the road, and he waved out the window before she turned around to go back inside. ****************************************************************************** Just another day in paradise.
