W.A.R. Part Three: Self-Destructive Tendencies Chapter Five: New Neighbor by Jeff Wilson I awoke that morning with a terrible headache. I had forgotten to take my allergy medicine last night, and the little that had lasted through the day it had worn off. My nose was stuffy, my ears were clogged and my belly was wet. OH MY GOD!!!! It all came back to me real quick. The dream I had. The results hadn't just been in my head... I had ejaculated all over myself. There was no easy way out of this one... I had come in my friend's bed with both of us laying in it buck naked. I looked over at Dustin. He was on his side facing away from me. I shook him. "Dustin... Dustin, wake up!" I whispered. Dustin grumbled a little bit and slowly began to stir. "Dustin, I came in your bed." "That's nice, Lefty... You WHAT!?!?" I had his full attention now. And he turned himself around and pulled back the covers. "Holy shit Billy! What did you do, jack off in my bed?" "No, it was a dream! I couldn't help it!" I cried. "Jeez! What are we going to do? I can't let my mom see this mess! She'll think we were banging or something!" I thought. Why did my body always do stupid stuff like this to humiliate me? Then I got an idea. "Why don't you hide your sheets? Then, when everyone's out, take them to my house and I'll wash them for you." Dustin thought about my plan. Then he agreed. As we started to get things in order, we realized it would be easier if I just took the sheets home with me in my bag. Then he wouldn't have to sneak around. We gathered everything up and hid it in my backpack. Then I washed up a bit before heading down to the kitchen. Amanda was still asleep, but Mrs. Smith was up and had things ready for breakfast. Mr. Smith had gone to work. It was a beautiful April morning. We talked a bit with Mrs. Smith then decided to go for a walk in the woods. As we left Dustin's backdoor and headed toward the woods, I noticed some activity in the little trailer next door to Dustin's house. "Hey Dusty?" "Yeah Lefty?" "Isn't that trailer supposed to be empty?" I asked. "Oh... I saw some people looking around there last week. Maybe somebody bought it." He said. "Let's go meet them." I suggested. We walked to the front of the trailer. Sure enough there was a car there loaded with lots of boxes. The door to the house was open and the For Rent sign was gone. We walked closer. Out of the house came a woman who looked about sixty. Darn. So much for having someone new to hang out with. Behind her came a guy who looked to be about twenty or so. He had brown hair that was spiky. He had sunglasses on, and a goatee that was neatly trimmed. He was wearing a dark red shirt that revealed a pretty slender frame. He was also wearing jean shorts and Nike shoes on his feet. "Don't worry about the heavy boxes, ma! I don't want you to hurt yourself." He said to the old lady. "Now Michael... Don't worry about your mom. I want you to be happy in your new home." Said the old lady to her son, I assumed. "Hi!" Dustin spoke up. Both people looked at him and smiled. "I'm Dustin, your new neighbor, I guess. This is Billy." He said pointing to me. "I live right over there. Are you moving in here?" "Well, I am," said the guy. "I'm Mike Evans, and this is my mom. She's just helping me get moved in." "Well hey, do you want some help?" Dustin offered. Mike smiled and said, "Sure. Heck at this point I need all the help I can get." So we began moving boxes out of Mike's car and into his new house. During the morning we found out that he was 23 and had just finished college and was looking to start out on his own. He was planning to start a computer repair business, and wanted to get out of his mom's house and start out on his own. Eventually, Dustin's mom came over and found out all about Mike. I guess she had seen us working and decided to find out who the new neighbor was. She was surprised to find out that it was just Mike who was moving in. She went back to the house and later came back with some iced tea for everyone. "Well, that takes care of the first load. I'm going to head back and get the next load, ma." Mike said. "Well why don't we come help you?" Dustin asked. "I think you better ask your mother before you go offering to hop into a car with someone who you just met." Mike said. Wow, he was a pretty smart guy. Dustin asked his mom and I could see that she wasn't quite sure. As if this new man were going to drive off with her boy and never come back. But with his mother standing right there, she must have figured it would be alright. So we hopped into the car and Mike drove us about fifteen miles to his old house. It was an older place that looked like somebody's grandmother owned it. Then I remembered that it was Mike's mom's house, and it made sense. We started moving box after box out of the hot, un-air-conditioned house and into the car, which we found out was also his mother's. Mike owned the Ford Mustang in the driveway. But his mom's car could hold more stuff. Dustin eventually had sweat right through his shirt and took it off. Even though I had just seen him naked the night before, I was still impressed with his half-naked body. Before long, I had my shirt off too. After we had loaded the car, we took a break before heading back. "So, Dustin... What do your parents do?" Mike asked, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "Well, my dad's a coal miner. My mom's a bus driver, but she's going to school to become a lawyer's secretary or something like that." "What about you Billy?" Mike asked, smiling. "Oh... My dad's an electrician and my mom's a nurse." I said. "Well, I guess you don't have much to worry about, huh? If you get sick , she can patch you up, and if something breaks, your dad can fix it." "Yep." I said, laughing. "That's usually how it goes." "My mom's a retired elementary teacher. She had me when she was almost forty. My dad was a dentist. He died about ten years ago. In fact, I was just about your age when he died. He was a diabetic and was never very healthy. He smoked all the time and ate nothing but donuts and sugar." Suddenly my stomach felt like it dropped through my shoes, and I asked to go to the bathroom. Mike told me where it was, and I sat there for a while. I didn't go... I just gathered my thoughts. Mike might as well have hit me. His words chilled me through. When I felt ready, I walked back to meet them. I stopped in the house to look at some pictures of Mike on the wall. He had been a good-looking kid. There were some pictures of his in a baseball uniform, some of him in a band uniform, and one of him and his dad with a gigantic fish hooked on a fishing pole. I have a picture like that on my dresser at home from when my dad and I went to Bedford last summer. As I was looking at the pictures, I happened to catch a bit of the conversation between Mike and Dustin. "Well I don't think he has to worry. My dad just didn't take care of himself." "Yeah, well he really hasn't been the same since his grandma died. He never used to worry about his dad dying or anything. But I can tell that it bothers him now." "Is he your best friend?" "Yeah, but I'm not his..." "What do you mean? He seems to like you a lot." "Yeah, but he likes someone else even more. He'd never come right out and say it, but I know it's true." "You're a smart kid, you know that?" "Yeah, but every one just thinks I'm a goof." "Well, do you act like a goof?" "Sometimes... I can't help it. It's bad enough that my parents hate each other. I don't want to... Well... I don't want people to think I'm smart. So I act dumb." "Why would you want people to think you're dumb?" "Because it's easier. If people are going to hate me, at least they won't hate the real me." At that time, I walked toward them and my footsteps gave me away. They completely changed subjects, to baseball. But I had heard more than I let on. The big question in my mind was: Why was Dustin telling this stuff to a guy he had just met this morning instead of to me? We eventually got everything packed into the car with space to spare for all of us to sit. Dustin sat up front while I had to ride in the back. My allergies were killing me, and I had a splitting headache. I stared out the window at the world going by. Dustin and Mike talked about all kinds of things, but never got back to what they were talking about before I came back. We stopped at McDonalds along the way and Mike paid for us. Then we continued back to Mike's new place. We unloaded the car and then relaxed in the new house for a while. Mike's mom had started getting some things unpacked for him. The place was full of boxes and there were still more to get, but I had to get going. It was already 4:00 and I still had to take care of Brett's fish. Before I left, Mike gave me ten dollars. I didn't want to take it, but he insisted. Dustin offered to walk back with me. So we gathered up my things at the house and walked back to the junction in the woods. Dustin seemed a little bit more... Well... He seemed distracted. "Hey, I'll take care of your sheets and get them back as soon as I can." I said. "Mmm hmmm..." He replied. "I had a good time with you, even though your family had a bad day." "Mmm hmmm..." He replied. "I stole twenty bucks from your piggy bank when you weren't looking." "Mmm hmmm..." He replied. "You're not listening to a word I'm saying are you?" "Mmm hmmm..." He replied. "I fucked your sister last night." "Mmm hmmm... WHAT?" He said, snapping back to reality. "What's with you? You're acting weird." I told him. "Oh... It's nothing... I'm just... tired. From last night. I'm tired. Aren't you tired?" He said. "Uh, sure... Well, thanks for having me come over Dust. It was a lot of fun." "Yeah, thanks for being there for me last night, too. I really appreciate it. Sometimes you just need someone to listen to you." "No problem, dude. You know I'm there for you. Even if you don't believe it sometimes." "I know. Well, I'm going to go help Mike some more. See you later!" Then he started heading back to his house. I turned around and went to Brett's. There, I fed the fish and did a few other tasks before heading home to go to bed at around 7:00. I had learned a lot during my time at Dustin's. Things were really falling apart over there. I hoped things would work out, but I had a feeling that they'd only get worse for Dustin. Thus ends Chapter Five. It also ends Billy's little excursion to Dustin's house. Things didn't quite go the way Billy thought they would. We'll hear more from the Smiths in later parts of the story. But now it's getting close to the time for Brett to return, and he'll be back in a big way in chapter seven. But before that, Billy has one more adventure to go on, this time with his dad. That will be in our next chapter, A Day with Dad. Until then, why don't you let me know what you thought of this chapter, or any other chapter in the story.
