CHAPTER 6 (Revisiting Chapter 5) The second day's trip (from Binghamton to Harrisburg) was more of the same - other than for the fact that much of the tension had disappeared from the relationship between the three travelers. As Cy stood at the wash basin that morning, for instance, Jack came up behind him and pressed his naked body against the teen. When Cy grinned into the mirror and wiggled his ass against Jack, the man actually giggled and swatted the youngster's butt. After Cali had run for the john at a rest stop, Jack did introduce one problem. "Normally, Cy," he said, "I would drive as far as I could today, but we've got to stop the night. It's my boy's birthday, his thirteenth. Becky and I don't live together any more. Given my life, Johnny lives with her. But he still knows I'm his dad," he added fiercely. "I'd be obliged for your help, Cy." (Continuing Our Story - Birthday Boy) As they drove into the capital city of the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the mood of the city seemed as dark as the lowering sky and the waters of the Susquehanna River that flowed just to the west. Every block disclosed men - old men, young men, men of every age - selling apples or pencils or begging for a few coins from the well-dressed businessmen and politicians on the streets. A dank wind swirling between the impressive old buildings seemed to chill even a group of "Silver Shirts" who were noisily demonstrating against the Jews in the Central Business District. (Author's Note: The Silver Legion of America, commonly known as the Silver Shirts, was one of several relatively small American Nazi groups that sprang up in the 1930s.) Jack had braved the downtown in order to reach a small, but pleasant hotel where the group would stay that night. Once in a simple but comfortable room, Jack sat the boys down and told them that family obligations would keep him away until mid evening. He gave them a nickle each for a movie and enough money for a nice dinner. Cautioning them to be on their best behavior, he left the hotel. Naturally, the boys were on high. Here they were in a "big city" and they had money! Immediately, they found the part of town where the big movie houses were located. (Cy had been to a few movies in Gloucester; this would be a first for Cali.) Several were closed and boarded up, but the marquee of one immediately drew their attention: Wow! King Kong! (Their search ended conclusively once they saw the advertising posters!) "What a place!" Cali moaned as they walked through the lobby of a building decorated to resemble a great palace. "I think it's in Arabia...or, maybe, India," Cy offered, pointing to the palm trees outlined against the sun that was setting over one wall. Finding seats in the darkened, sparsely occupied auditorium, they sat down to enjoy the short vaudeville program that was on stage before the showing of the major film. (Actually, the singers and musicians were all recipients of a Pennsylvania cultural arts relief grant.) The two boys were absolutely spellbound. Months later as they worked in the fields they found themselves humming tunes heard that afternoon, including: "Once I built a railroad, I made it run, make it race against time. Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime? Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime; Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?" Gorney/Harburg - "Brother (Buddy), Can You Spare a Dime?" 1932 - Next Decade Music - ASCAP/ The Songwriters Guild - ASCAP "We're in the money, we're in the money; We've got a lot of what it takes to get along! We're in the money, that sky is sunny, Old Man Depression you are through, you done us wrong. We never see a headline about breadlines today. And when we see the landlord we can look that guy right in the eye We're in the money, come on, my honey, Let's lend it, spend it, send it rolling along!" Dubin/Warren - "We're in the Money" (from the film Gold Diggers of 1933, 1933) As the young lady finished singing "We're in the Money," Cali leaned over to Cy and hoarsely whispered, "She ain't been where I've been, bro!" "I think that they're just trying to make us feel better," responded the Gloucester teen. "Still, I'll sure take the do re mi' if she sends any rolling my way!" King Kong? Well, every time Fay Wray screamed, Cali jumped off his seat about two feet! And both boys were playing Kong for weeks! Dinner at the Horn & Hardart Automat was simple, but tasty and filling. (Author's Note: The automat was an early form of fast food restaurant where food and drink were served by coin-operated vending machines. The kitchen constantly restocked the machines with fresh food from behind.) The only thing that bothered the boys were the bos who kept pacing back and forth in front of the dining area, watching them eat through the glass, and staring hungrily at their plates that emptied fast! Needless to say, they were almost clean by the time the boys were finished. No leftovers there... At least half in regret, Cy grinned as they got up and headed back to the nearby hotel. They were lying together on the couch, arms around the other's shoulders, listening to the radio when Jack returned. He was not alone. "I want you boys to meet my son, Johnny," Dragon Jack growled. "It's his birthday today...thirteen...a teenager!" With that, Jack threw his arm around the tall drink of water's shoulders and pushed him forward. Initially rather shy, he set the box he was carrying down on the table and shook hands with Cy and Cali. "Brought something for you guys," he squeaked as he insisted on serving each of them an enormous chunk of birthday cake and a Coke. As he passed the food and drink, the boys crowded around, pounding him on the back and wishing him a really happy day. Blushing a bit, he mumbled, "Dad's here. That's all I need to make me happy!" Both Cy and Cali knew exactly what he was talking about and envied the hell out of him. However raucous, their rendition of the "Happy Birthday" song was clearly heartfelt! "I got to see my kid play baseball this afternoon," bragged Jack. "I just about busted my vocal cords when he hit a homer. Believe me, he's quite the athlete." Johnny blushed again and popped his dad on the shoulder. Feigning fear, Jack snickered, "Cali, you and I have got to go out for a little bit and pick up something I forgot." When the blond looked as if he might object, Jack continued smoothly, "There's a little place a couple of blocks over - I lived near here as a boy - where they have the best pie and ice cream ever. I need your critical opinion, Cali." Cali grinned and shrugged his shoulders in mock resignation as the two of them left. The older teen looked Johnny over as he scraped up the last smudges of frosting on his plate. His dad had talked about how much he loved him at the rest stop on the way into Harrisburg. He also knew that his mother and father were aware that he was quite upset. Evidently, seventh grade had not been at all easy. The piece de resistance involved telling his priest in Confession that he thought he might be gay, and having the priest inform his mother. The dust still hadn't settled in the home after that blowup. He had sports to fall back on - and the youngster looked the part of an athlete. Black hair like his dad's spilled down from underneath a baseball cap onto a handsome brow; he already showed some shoulder development and his thighs were visibly thickening. He was one good-looking kid - and he seemed to be a nice one. "Dad said you gave him permission to tell me that you were queer," he mumbled with studied nonchalance as he vigorously licked his fork. "I don't especially like the word queer,' Johnny," Cy said softly. "I'm me and that's kinda the end of it. But, yeah, guys excite me like girls excite most men. Does that mean that you'd be happier if I'd just shut up and wait for your dad and Cali to return?" "NO, CY! I'M SORRY! That just came out all wrong. Matter of fact, I've been hoping I could talk with a guy closer to my own age...a guy who wouldn't ruin my life...or someone who wouldn't just say that it was a sin, tell me to say three Hail, Marys' and two Our Fathers' and stop drooling over the pictures of those guys in the family Bible." (Pause.) "How do you know...if you're that way?" he asked softly, though there was a lot of emotion behind those simple words. The Gloucester teen went over to the couch and sat down a foot or so from Johnny. "You spank the monkey just like most guys do, don't you?" The thirteen year-old looked confused. "Oh, you mean jerk off'?" he said, blushing but grinning. "Yeah, sure..." "Tell me, Harrisburg, when you jerk off, do you think of girls or guys?" Johnny thought for a minute and then said haltingly, "Well, Cy, this last year, I've thought mostly of guys." As moisture began to cloud his eyes, he added, "Is that my answer?" "Nope!" Cy answered emphatically. "You may not know for a couple of years, or even longer, at least for sure. Sexual development is kinda like the development of your body. One part grows for a while, stops, and another part starts growing. Like legs and feet..." he grinned. "Don't get too hung up on either-ors. Just try to be yourself, enjoy your life, and stay out of trouble with others when it's possible. Enjoy your sports and let some other things take their own sweet time to sort themselves out." "What does it feel like to love a guy?" Johnny asked with some embarrassment. "Hard to tell, Slugger. In the first place, my guess is that Cali and your dad are going to be back pretty soon, and I don't want to get into something that I can't finish. In the second, my guess is that it's not all that different from the way that guys feel about girls...when they like them that way. And, believe me, it's not all bad! Show you what I mean..." With that, Cy bent over the young teen whose eyes were closed and whose head was resting back against the top edge of the couch. He didn't use any tongue, but he still gave the boy a passionate kiss square on the lips. Sitting up, he couldn't miss the quiet smile that was flickering on Johnny's lips. "Oh, yeah!" each breathed to himself. "Damn! I wish you lived around here," the young jock growled. At that moment, the two youngsters heard someone clumsily trying to insert and turn a key in the lock. Grabbing a hard bicep, Cy said seriously, "Stay in close touch with your dad, John. He loves you like crazy, he's a regular guy, and he'll help you through all this." Cali finally had his way with the lock, and he and Dragon Jack struggled into the room. Cy looked questioningly at his little buddy who grinned and allowed that the ice cream and pie were everything that Jack had said they were. "Besides," he added, "he had to buy stuff." The three smiling boys were each given a birthday-wrapped present and told to open it forthwith. Inside they found Gruen watches. (Not exactly Rollexes, but the hands weren't falling off either!) The lads were ecstatic. "Something to remember this birthday by," Jack murmured happily. (On the Road Again) Due to torrential rains associated with a heavy late spring storm, they stopped overnight once more on their way to Charleston. After Cali had been shipped off to the second movie of his life with the motel owner's son, Cy and Jack lay naked on Jack's bed. Closer to the Atlantic coast, it was a hot and sticky night. Toying with the youngster's nips, Jack grunted, "Gonna miss you...gonna miss you bad! Thanks for talking with my boy. You did him a world of good!" Giggling and jerking around as Jack began getting to him, Cy managed to gasp, "Love him, Jack, and stay close. He needs you." "God, you are a sexy animal," Jack growled and he buried his head in the teen's groin. Going hard erect, Cy squealed like a stuck pig as his sexual mentor (gently) worked a well- moistened finger into his anus. "Hurt?" inquired Jack. "Nah...just surprised me," the boy replied. "Why didn't you ever fuck me?" he continued. "Well, that was really due to Cali," Jack responded. "How's that?" the curly-haired one giggled, his breathing settling down again and his stomach returning to where it belonged. "Cali told me about what happened in the jungle. I'm so glad you're ok, Big Guy." Stroking the very erect, dripping club that pulsed before him as if it were the father of all cobras...maybe, the GOD of the Cobras...Dragon Jack whispered that Life would be poorer if this...monument had been cut down. Reaching out, he touched just the tip of his tongue to the boy's frenulum before his entire tongue swirled over the heavy glans to lap up the delicious sap dripping down the tree. "Yeah, if anything, he loves you more than I do...worships you, in fact," he grunted as he savored Cy's precum. "Not many men have that kind of sidekick watching their backs. Take care of him," Jack concluded. Shaking his head, the man sat up straight in bed. He spoke clearly and forcefully. "That's why I never fucked you. I still think it's time for you to learn about fucking," Jack added. Shaking his head again as if he doubted his own sanity, the man gazed at the monumental fuck pole in front of him. "You game?" "Yeah, if you'll help," Cy mumbled cautiously. "You're gonna have to take it REAL easy, youngster - or I'll be the one that has to be carted off to the morgue." "Really?" the teen whispered nervously. "Yeah... really," grunted his mentor. Dragon Jack conducted the first performance of the symphony with noteworthy skill and sensitivity. Had a reporter been present, he would surely have written that the young lad from Cape Ann, north of Boston, performed his part with a youthful energy and success that gave great promise for his future artistry. The muscled conductor actually coaxed all of that monster inside him and claimed ever after that it was the consummating moment of his professional career. The young lad just smirked and hoped that it wouldn't be long before it happened again! Dragon Jack's "Express" rolled into Charleston at around 11:00 o'clock the next morning. Jack dropped the boys off near a small hobo jungle not all that far from the railroad, a jungle whose population was swollen because the strawberry harvest in the area was well underway. The long trip from Albany had been fun - and, God knows, they had made good friends. Even though Jack shared a few bucks with them, they were, however, nearly broke and more than ready to assume their role as "harvest tramps." To Be Continued
