He listened than said: "Good. I'll wait for you, then. You'll find the little boy ready. But tell Kim Shin to remain outside, only let him take the trunk inside... No, I agree, we'll dope the boy only after you've talked to him... Sure we need to do it - I told you he is a rebel, didn't I? You can't take him away awake, that would give you lots of problems... Just think, if you ran a red light with the police there and the boy yells for help... Diplomatic car or not, they'll stop you. Yes, sure. I'll wait for you, Chem." He turned toward Jacques and smiled at him: "So, then, everything is as we planned. You'll take care of Jeff and Naoki, won't you?" "Sure." "Do you feel like it?" "No problem. They will have no suspicions about an invalid immobilized in bed." "I'd rather you had a gun, for your safety." "No... everything will be fine." "About Shin... are you sure he..." "He is eager to take the place of Chem. And General Kim agrees, so..." Dan nodded. He caressed his lover's arm. They remained silence for a while. Then they heard a car pull up and shortly after someone rang the bell. It was Shin with another Korean in a Wolksvagen pickup. "We brought the trunk. Are you sure Chem suspects nothing?" "Absolutely. He is thrilled, he thinks about nothing but the boy. Come now, we have little time. Will you come to pick up the other two later?" "Yes, tonight I'll send our... transportation agency." Shin said while with his henchman they moved the trunk to the basement. Dan make them enter the small room where his man was on guard. The man looked at the two Koreans with a suspicious glance but said nothing. Dan told him to hide in the other cellar and to keep absolutely silent. The man already knew what would happen there in a few minutes. Shin and his henchman went upstairs again with Dan and went back to their pickup. Dan went to Jacques' bedside. "Put the cocaine in sight on the night table..." said Jacques. Dan obeyed then said: "The nurse has to remain in the kitchen. Will she do so? Wouldn't it better to send her away?" "No, she will be a useful witness if something goes wrong. But don't worry. Everything will go smoothly, you'll see." Jacques said with a tired smile, trying to encourage his lover. It wasn't that Dan really needed courage, he had a lot of that. But the change they were about to give to their business was not small thing, and the man was feeling somewhat tense. Rain continued to fall incessantly, irksome, and outside it was already dark. Only the floral composition Dan put on the windowsill gave a note of freshness and color to the gray and dark rectangle of the window. Jacques emitted a light sigh then said: "Tonight, when you are back from the auction, will you make love to me?" "I'm afraid to hurt you..." "You don't want me any more? I need you..." "I do too, my love, you know it. I desire you." "So, then..." "All right. I promise you." "Thank you. We should do it more often. I feel better afterwards. Really, do you know that?" Dan nodded wistful. Sure he desired him, but he was really afraid he would hurt him - his lover had become so fragile! But he could not deny him his relief. He was moved that Jacques, even in his painful condition, desired him, wanted to make love with him. If he only could give his lover half his life span, half his health! What would not he do for his lover! The door bell rang again. This time it was Chem, followed by Jeff and Naoki. The Korean absolutely beamed as he entered. As soon as they entered and took off their raincoats, Chem asked to greet Jacques. All the four men went to the room of the ill man. "Jacques, my dear friend! How are you?" "Well, as you can see, more dead than alive. But I can't complain. I'm not suffering too much and, in case, a little cocaine helps me to get over the worst moments. But I seldom have to use it. "You, on the other hand, seem to be in good shape." "Yes, I'm all right. But... and Terry?" the man asked, his eyes shining. Jacques had a faint smile and brushed Chem's hand, who answered that gesture by gently taking the man's hand between his hands and caressing it. "Terry? Terry is in good health, but he will be a difficult boy to convert to what you want. I asked Dan to tell you so, didn't I?" "And this excites me even more." "Yes, Chem, I understand that. But if I can give you some advice..." "Your advice is always precious." "Terry hates Dan, who kidnapped him. You should both go downstairs together and you, in front of the boy, have to treat Dan badly, telling him he kept the poor boy in a dirty hovel, that you are very displeased, that Terry for you is the most precious thing in the world... You understand, don't you? You see the scene..." Chem smiled: "Yes, I see, he is the bad one and I'm the good one. Sure. It should work." "Don't try to take the boy violently, by force, coming to blows - you will tame him easier with sweetness, believe me." "Yeah, sure..." answered the Korean visibly aroused. "And I believe it would be better if Jeff and Naoki wait for you here with me, I don't think their sight would soothe the little boy, you see..." Jacques added with a little smile. Chem giggled and nodded in amusement. "So, then, are you coming to take your little Terry?" Dan said to the Korean, taking from the night table a syringe full of colorless liquid. "Yeah, sure! Is that the narcotic for Terry?" "Yes, it has an immediate effect, he will not quite feel the jab." "But I want first to talk with the boy, understood?" "He will not even see it, be sure." Dan answered hiding the syringe behind his back with a shrewd smile. They went downstairs. When they were in the little room former occupied by the guard, Dan whispered to Chem: "He is inside there. If you want to look at him through the peep-hole before going in..." "Yeah... God, isn't he beautiful! Yeah, he'll be a perfect lover, he'll be my marterp..." he never ended his sentence - Dan quickly inserted the syringe needle into the Korean's neck forcing the piston down as far as it would go. Chem jumped, tried to turn and collapsed into Dan's ready arms - that charge of powerful poison would have killed a herd of elephants. He called out softly to his man and, together, they opened the trunk and dumped in the corpse of the Korean. Then Dan looked through the peep-hole - the little boy was standing in front of the bed and was looking towards the door - he possibly had heard some noise. Meanwhile, upstairs, Jeff and Naoki were seated on two chairs near Jacques bed. The ill man, pointing to the cocaine packet, said to the two men: "I presume Chem will be busy downstairs for a while..." Jeff sniggered, "Yes, I think so too. I never saw him so excited and aroused for a new purchase. He lost his head for that Terry-boy. He even forgot about the money problem..." Naoki threw him a glance that didn't escape Jacques. "Yes, he told us, but he knows he has nothing to worry about. We will lend him what he needs to give back to general Kim. Sorry, Naoki, as Dan is downstairs with your boss, would you please prepare some cocaine for me? The pain is starting to grow stronger..." "Sure." The Japanese said standing up. "Take the top packet of these five - there is still a quarter of a dose. For the moment it will be enough, I hope. At its side you will see a small dish, the blade and the small pipe..." Naoki opened the top packet, poured its content onto the gilded dish and with the razor-blade he leveled the thin white powder and divided it in two long stripes. Then drew the little pipe near Jacques' nostril and put the small dish under the pipe. "Here you are, you can sniff..." he said gently. Jacques inhaled, while the Japanese made the dish skillfully slide until, after three sniffs, all the powder disappeared. While Naoki was putting at its place the tools, Jacques smiled in bliss. He shut his eyes, keeping silent for a short while, then said: "Boys, if you two want to sniff some, with our compliments... there is plenty. You can help yourselves." Naoki seemed uncertain but Jeff accepted at once - they were at a friend's house There were no dangers, and they could relax a little. Not a full dose, just some only to relax, only to feel a little less the bored of the weather. He asked Naoki to divide a dose in two. Finally Naoki nodded. This time it was Jeff to prepare the powder. He prepared four stripes, two for himself and two for his colleague. Then, under the encouraging smile of Jacques, first Jeff, then Naoki, sniffed all the powder. Jeff put down the dish and pipe, and sat down. The first to open wide his eyes, to bring the hands to his head and collapse, was Naoki. Jeff had just time to realize that something wrong when it was his turn. Jeff emitted a kind of choked moan, stretched out his hand towards his little machine-gun he had put under his chair when he too collapsed. Dan entered the room, the Smith & Wesson in his hand, tense. "Everything done, isn't it?" Jacques quietly asked. Dan put back his gun in his pocket and bent over the two corpses. "Yes. How's the powdered sugar?" "It made me feel like I needed to sneeze. Anyway a lot better than one hundred per cent pure cocaine. Really fast!" "To tell the truth, it was not hundred per cent pure, I mixed it with some strychnine, for safety sake. Just to guarantee things if they sniffed less than a whole dose." "Good. I can say that you can now go and call Shin to move these two until they will take them away. Well, my love. A new era is starting now." Jacques said to his man with a smile. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Kevin, before the F.B.I. car turned left on the block where Jaques Roux lived; stopped in front of a shop selling occultism books, incense, New Age records and aphrodisiacs, quickly recalling the house. He walked down the humid and deserted sidewalk, but saw the other F.B.I. cars already lying in wait, apparently empty, on the side streets. Anyway he was connected by radio with Silvan who would intervene with backup forces in case of danger. Kevin was surely running a great risk, but they feared that with a mass raid the men inside would have the time to eliminate Terry or use him as a hostage. He put his hat on and opened the cheap umbrella he had just bought from a Senegalese peddler near the hospital where Ellen was admitted. When he was sure nobody was looking at him, he slipped his .38 out from the holster and slid it into the pocket of his coat. On the stairway going to the house were two men - Kin Shin and his body guard. Shin had a big plaster on his nose, that Kevin broke in their recent clash. The Korean was on the top of the stairs, his shoulders turned towards the open door of the cottage. Sheltered under a big black umbrella, he was watching his henchman transporting a trunk on castors toward a pickup parked nearby. Kevin had surprise on his side, but it would be a meager advantage if other men came on the scene. And possibly Terry would suffer the consequences. But at that point he could only hope and proceed. Reaching the lower part of the stairs he hid his face under the umbrella and let the henchman with the trunk pass him. Kevin felt ready, fear preceding the moment of action gave way to coolness. He felt, growing inside himself, determination to put an end to this. He lowered his umbrella and gave a violent heave with his shoulder to the henchman hurling him against the pickup. The man hit his head against the pickup, a stroke that would knock out most men. But not that one. He was stunned but still conscious. He saw him slide on his knees with his hands clenching his head and, before taking care of Shin, let the man clearly see his .38 which he was now holding in his hand. A thin man wearing a hooded jacket and taking his schnauzer for a walk, arrived a few yards from the cottage. He saw he scene and was petrified. Then, without hesitation, picked up the schnauzer and started running in the opposite direction. He was evidently another righteous citizen not wanting to be involved. When Kim Shin raised his umbrella to better see what was happening, Kevin said in a low, but clearly audible voice, "Try doing some silly thing and I'll smash your brains on the stairs. Come down with your hands on the back of your neck. Hurry up." He felt tempted to kill Shin doing justice once and for all. There is no policeman who, at one time or another, hasn't felt such temptation in front of a criminal. Some really do so and have the luck not to be found out. Kevin's instinct was pushing him to revenge. Shin decidedly deserved death. That hog, fifteen years earlier in Saigon, had attacked Kevin first. He couldn't kill him just because he had the chance. Slaughtering him would not be a big loss for mankind. But Kevin would also have to kill the henchman, the sole witness. It was not prudent killing two people protected by diplomatic immunity. It was not convenient. He watched Shin drop the umbrella. The Korean was half hidden by the darkness but the dark could not hid the hate that was making his voice vibrate, "You have to be mad. I'll make you pay. I'll have you thrown out of the police immediately, kicking your ass, and then..." "Put your hands back of you neck, before I'll provide your ass with one more hole!" Kevin interrupted him, gesturing him nearer the pickup. The diplomat threw a glance to his half dizzy henchman struggling to stand up. Shin tried to say something but Kevin hissed at him, pushed him against the pickup and kicking his legs, made him spread wide. Always keeping an eye on the bodyguard, he searched the diplomat - he had no weapons. Anyway the henchman must have some weapon on him. Kevin ordered him to pull off his yellow raincoat and his jacket expecting some reaction, but the man seemed too dazed. He possibly remembered the blows he got the last time they met. Once he freed himself from raincoat and jacket, he revealed a .45 he had in an armpit holster. "Face down on the sidewalk!" Kevin ordained. The Korean, lying down slowly, kept his eyes turned to the detective. He was looking for a chance to react. Kevin pushed the snout of his .38 on his neck, to make him feel the weapon's presence and make him understand how easy was to be killed on the streets of the Big Apple. He took the man's .45 then ordered both Koreans to get into the pickup. "Handcuff yourselves to the steering wheel spokes." he said to Shin, pulled the keys from the dashboard and threw them towards the park. His heart-beat started to slow down. Fear was under control. Kevin made for the trunk and opened it - he immediately recognized the rigid body of Chem. He felt that it was still warm but had no pulse. He left the trunk open. "Well," he thought, "they will be charged with his murder. I would have liked best to kill him myself, but let's be content with it." He went back to the passenger compartment. It was the moment to follow the official procedures. He drew out his badge, "Sergeant Kevin Black. You are under arrest for murder, corpse concealment, complicity in Terence Dos Santos kidnapping and the murder of his parents..." Under the rain he recited to the two Koreans the articles of law, reminding them they had the right not to speak and that anything they said could be used against them. A couple of times he threw a glance toward the house - the thought that Firestone could be waiting for him in the shadow make his heart-beat accelerate. "Is Firestone inside?" The two Koreans were sitting in silence, like petrified. "Is Terry Dos Santos shut up inside the house?" Shin limited himself to pointing the plaster on his nose and kept silent. "Not easy making conversation with you guys." Kevin said. Passing the .38 to his left hand, he slipped his right arm into the pickup. Using his thumb and forefinger, he wrung Kin Shin lower lip. The Korean's eyes widened and the man tried to escape the hold. "Where is Terry?" Shin relaxed. Thinking the Korean was about talking, Kevin let the hold go. "Take it up your ass!" Shin said and spit on his face. Kevin didn't feel any hate inside himself. He understood they were at the end. It was a moment to keep cool. A policeman knows when he has power of life or death power over a criminal. "I have to take it up my ass? For sure not from you. We have still to settle accounts for Juan Lafonte and Maxey Twentyman, then for Grace and Max Dos Santos. If we have to settle accounts once for all, I'm game. For the last time, where is Terry Dos Santos?" "Fuck yourself! And be sure, somebody will fuck your little boy!" Shin yelled. Kevin felt cooler than ever. "All right, but not you for sure." he said and grasping a hand full of his genitals through his trousers, he squeezed them violently. The Korean threw out a choked moan while curling himself trying to escape him. The henchman stretched himself over Shin's body and with his free hand hit Kevin. Shin raised his hand. A surrender? Kevin had no time to waste. "I'll tell you where he keeps the boy..." Kevin at once was on guard - in Vietnam he learned how tough Koreans could be. And Kim Shin for sure was no little girl. "Firestone keeps him prisoner in the cellar." ----------------------------- CONTINUES IN CHAPTER SIXTEENTH ----------------------------- In my home page I've put some of my stories.
