Tessellations(A Byzantine Story) Chapter 26 By-Zane Hunter-Green Ron was drifting off into a stupor. The haze of the walls of Tib's room lashed by lights from lanterns carried in the street. Before he surrendered to sleep he felt the warmth of hot breath. Tib moved closer. Without a word Tib closed in on him, pulling him up on top of the aggressive boy's chest, waking Ron up as he found himself lying astride the boy below him. His penis rubbed against Tib's, Ron naturally took the spike digging into his belly and cradled it in his hand, starting to rub it carelessly until Tib stuck his tongue in his mouth taking further possession. Ron twisted and turned away from the hot mouth. "No Tib..." "Why not?" Ron turned away not answering him. Tib tried again by starting to massage Ron's scrotum, but thought he didn't protest, Ron didn't respond. "Don't act like you want me to piss-off. I'm in the mood to try a male now. You could at least let me touch you, and feel what you're like. Actually you're prettier than any girl I know." "Then what, I'm the whore you wanted to rent for the night? Maybe I should sleep on the floor." "Maybe you should sleep...I'll go out and find a boy who wants to have some fun." "Ron was too tired to argue, "You do that...night." He rolled off of Tib and drifted off, the next thing he knew he heard a loud squealing like a puppy being hurt. Tib was there and he had a very little dark-haired boy with him. "What the hell are you doing with that child?" "They gave him to me to take home for the night and break in. They said cause I had a small penis I wouldn't hurt him for his first time." "You're not doing it with him! He's too young" "I'm not taking him back to the house until the morning. I thought you would like him Ron, he's sort of a surprise for you. I thought we could share him. He's not much younger than us." "Your parents let you bring him here? Don't they care what you do? And how can you even imagine he would be a surprise for me? I thought you liked girls, and I told you I had a lover of my own... an older lover!" The two older boys started to argue as the younger boy listened wide-eyed. "I like men! And I'm not going to let you hurt this boy!'" The little boy started to cry. "What was he doing at a whore house? He should still be with his mamma." "His mother sold him. It was that or he would starve to death." Tib retorted. "Dominic was right, he said that there was nothing good about places that sold humans for sex." Ron pulled the boy towards him, but unlike the way Tib had handled him, he did it to sooth him." "The boy stopped crying and told them that he would rather they do it as he called it." "Perhaps we better oblige him. The reason they let me take him with me was one of the regulars wanted to have this boy, and would have insisted if he was still in the house. He really is better off with us for the first few times." "What if you don't bring him back?" "They'll come and get him." "What if he disappears with me?" "You can't Ron, I'm responsible to get him back there." "What is a boy like him worth?" "Not much, perhaps a hundred drachmas. They can get 20 boys like him from the markets, especially after a battle. Maybe it would be more civil to slay the little bastards. I mean their parents are dead, who is left to take care of them?" Ron's fist was ready to target Tib's face. "You are the bastard if you think like that." "Well you said you wanted to be a soldier, that's what soldiers do, they kill people, and they don't worry if some snot-nosed brat has no one to take care of them." "They defend people, and I'm defending this little boy. He's going with me, and if you try to stop me I'll...I'll...bash your head in." "Lovely...you'll bash my head to protect this brat. Who will protect him from ...you?" Ron didn't know what to say. He wanted to call Tib a fucking barbaric Byzantine, but he knew that the Franks were just as brutal. It didn't really seem to make sense, but he was going with his feelings. Ron counted his money, after he saw he had just enough he handed a hundred drachmas's to Tib. "I can't stay here any more. That you would hurt this boy means we could never be friends. I am taking him and leaving. Pay your whoremongers for me!" Ron took his sack and the little boy by the hand. "Where are his clothes?" he demanded of Tib. Tib reached on the floor by his and picked up a skimpy cotton tunic. It had some gaudy flowers embroidered on it, certainly nothing a boy should wear but it was all he had. He took the boy with him, not sure where he was going next. "Are you my new Master?" Ron never owned a slave, and didn't want to. "No. You're not my slave, so don't call me Master, how old are you?" "Eight. Are you going to have sex with me?" "No, I am not, I bought you so you don't have to have sex with anyone." "You mean until I am as old as you." "Right, until you are ancient like me. I'm almost a half a decade older than you." "Are you rich?" "No." "Then how come you bought me?" "I don't know, just follow me and stop asking so many questions or I'll regret buying your freedom." The morning foot traffic was getting heavier as Ron started to wonder where he should go. He couldn't wander aimlessly, especially now that he had this child with him. He wondered why he had been so impulsive as to weigh himself down with the little boy, then the tiny face looked up at him and gave him a shy smile." "What is your name?" "Yanioprtyuoitric Cen Aramintial." "I can't remember all that, sorry, I'm going to call you Yan, alright?" "And I can't call you Master, cause you said not to, so who are you?" "My name is Saffron, but everyone calls me Ron." "Saffron...Ron...where are we going?" "I'm not sure" he caught his words as the street started to look familiar. For a moment he figured they would have no choice but to return to his father's palace, at least he could find it before they starved to death in the streets. The only problem was his father kept banishing him, first to sea, then to school. He knew if he showed up with this child his father would punish him for disobeying, and perhaps never let him see Dominic again. As he looked up the street he recognized the outer solarium of the Doctor's house, the man who had helped him when he escaped from Leo. "I know people who live here, and they might be able to help us. Now you have to promise to be very well behaved." "Yes Ron." Ron knocked lightly on the door and waited until the heavy door creaked open. "Saffron!" the Doctor greeted him warmly. "Come in, come in." Saffron sat in the anteroom and was given some wine. Yan wandered off with his daughter play with a small discus. "Your father gave me instructions to send for him if I saw you. I believe he left a message at the school as well with one of the monks he trusted. He has bad news I'm afraid." "Not Dominic..." Ron prayed. "Dominic never made it to the port where he was scheduled to embark from. They found his horse, and it was slaughtered." "Was...was...he there too?" "No...they didn't find his body...but it doesn't look good. It happened a few days after he left you at the school, and there has been no other word of him. Your father knew how much he meant to you and hopes that you won't suffer alone. Your father wishes that you return home. "I won't...I can't." "Then will you let him come here and speak to you?" "Yes, but I have nothing to say to him." "Then the two of you can sit in silence together. I know that your father loved Dominic as well. He was your father's trusted friend which means more than it sounds like in the Byzantine courts." "He didn't trust him enough to let me stay with him!" "Maybe the idea of your going to school was Dominic's he didn't want you to suffer." "I could have saved him!" "And what if he couldn't save you. At least he died knowing you were safe." Ron didn't hear him. All he heard was the blackness as the walls of all his hopes crashed around him. ... Leo came back from a pointless journey into Constantinople. After forcing the information from a spotty youth that had befriended the very alive Saffron he was enraged that Father Benedict never alerted him to the fact that Saffron was a student at the school that he endowed. He was ready to make eunuchs of the lot of them. Of course it was his fault that he never informed them about his cousin. He found the home where Saffron had stayed easily enough and learned that he had left with a small boy. The only thing that seemed to be going right was the artist (who made the sketches which resulting in his discovering that not only was Saffron alive, but he was no longer with the insipid Dominic) working on a sculpture of the divine boy. He ordered the artist to work on it day and night, and deliver it to him as soon as it was done. He didn't care that some Italian had commissioned it. Leo went back to his palace to order all his men to search Constantinople and the surrounding areas for Saffron. Then he went to alert his cousin, Aregund that the boy was alive and he had better stay that way.
