Trigger warning: there's a short section at the beginning that depicts domestic violence between a father and his sons. It's not very long and it's there to set the background to the brothers' story. ABANDONED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN ***EIGHT YEARS PREVIOUSLY*** The nine-year-old cowered in the corner with his hands cradling his head. Tears stained his face and blood dried around his nose. He begged for his drunk father to stop the assault. "Please, dad! I'm sorry." In the next room, his teenage brother tried to block his ears. With his eyes shut tightly he hummed to himself, trying to block out the noise coming from the next room. He knew what was going on in there but tried to ignore it. He rocked himself back and forth, his own tears spilled as he heard another loud slap followed by a young cry. His breathing was ragged with fear. He wiped his tears and glanced at his wardrobe. He spotted his blue duffel bag and in that moment he decided that he'd had enough. Hands shaking, he grabbed the bag and started filling it for both himself and a backpack for his brother. The sobbing could still be heard from the next room. Done with the packing, he cautiously walked into the next room to find his father still beating his brother. The sixteen-year-old ran over and tried to pull the man away from the small boy. "Stop! Stop hurting him!" the teenager begged. The man turned and threw a fist out connecting to the older boy's face. "YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP, ISAAC," bellowed the drunk man. Isaac stumbled back and his own nose started to bleed. "Josh, go to your room," Isaac ordered. The little boy scampered off and made a dash for the sanctuary of his room. "You get back here," the man yelled. Isaac pushed him away before he could grab hold of the running boy. Isaac threw a punch of his own and the drunk man staggered and fell on his back, groaning and dazed. Isaac ran into their bedroom and ordered Josh to grab the backpack. "Josh, we're leaving." Isaac ignored the uncertain look on Josh's still-bleeding face. With great haste, Isaac picked up his duffel bag and pushed Josh out of the bedroom and towards the front door. "When we get outside, I want you to run as fast as you can to the park, okay? Just run." His voice was thick with fear and apprehension, but anything was better than here. The boys heard a grunt and watched as their father got back on his feet. Isaac yanked open the front door and made a dash for the street. "Run, Josh, run!" screamed Isaac as his feet hit the pavement. He can hear his father yell after them in rage, commanding him to get back into the house. Adrenaline flooded the teen's system as he made his final break away. His senses were overloaded – bright lights flashed behind his eyes, his heart beat furiously. He heard a distant scream from the young boy. "Isaac! Help" Isaac turned around and saw that his father had caught Josh by the back of his shirt, holding him back. The blood drained out of Isaac's face and a jagged shards of fear ripped through his heart. Taking the biggest breath of his life, he knew that he had to make a quick decision. His father started stumbling out of the house after him, dragging his small boy behind him. Looking into the terror in his brother's eyes, Isaac choked back a sob. Making the resolve to never turn back, he made a dash for the park, running as fast as he could. He could hear his brother yelling for him, pleading for him to rescue him. His father slapped the boy into silence. Isaac didn't look back. He just kept running until he could no longer run. He didn't stop at the park. He didn't stop running until it was dark and he was on the edge of town. He collapsed and vomited on the concrete foot path. Rolling onto his back, he let out a immense sob; the picture of his broken brother etched in his mind forever. ***PRESENT DAY*** Six AM – the bedside clock started beeping. A young man rolled over with a groan and silenced the alarm. He dragged himself out of bed and left his apartment for his morning run. After an invigorating 40-minute track in the early morning air, he returned home and finished off his morning routine. Dressed in a tidy stripped dress shirt and fine tie, he made his way to work navigating through the morning traffic. Arriving at his destination, he walked into a building with the words `GENERAL HAYALL BANKING' embedded in giant gold letters on the front. He greeted the receptionist with a sincere smile. "Good morning, Jeanette." "We're still on for lunch today, Isaac?" Jeanette asked. He nodded in confirmation before walking into the adjacent elevator and taking it up to the sixth floor. Isaac sat down at his cubicle and took his time organising his desk for the day. He looked at the framed diploma that hanged on the wall of his cubicle and smiled at it. Now 24 years old, Isaac had been with the company for just under two years after finishing his commerce diploma. He began working at the company's customer service department for the first year before being promoted to the insurance department, which meant handling paperwork in a cubicle but for more pay. He felt extremely fortunate to have this well-paying job. Not only did the company believe in paying their employees well, Isaac's boss was friendly and approachable. His days were fairly consistent. He finished work at five PM and spends another half hour getting home. He spends his evenings doing the odd chore here and there within his apartment and watches TV when he gets bored. At 10 PM he begins to prepare for bed and is asleep before he even knows it. Isaac awoke with a gasp and a sob. He touched his face and fresh tears coated his fingers. The room was faintly illuminated with the red numbers of his clock – it read '02.00'. He wiped the wetness from his face and closed his eyes, trying to slow his breathing. Nightmares had been waking him for most nights for the past few weeks. It was starting to wear him down during the day. He got tired earlier in the evening and it was becoming more of a chore to get out of bed in the morning. However, that was nothing compared to the hole that the nightmares bore into his heart. He flipped onto his stomach and buried his face into his pillow, muffling another sob. The cries and pleas of his brother to save him rang fresh in his ears. Unconscious of him doing so, Isaac whispers his long, lost brother's name. "I'm so sorry, Josh," he cried to himself. He repeated these unrealised apologies. Eventually, his sobs slowed and he grew tired. It was 3.30 AM before he fell back to sleep. The next day, Isaac and Jeanette were having lunch together in the staff lunch room. Jeanette started digging into her salad before she noticed that Isaac wasn't responding to her usual bantering. She watched him as he absently played with his food. "Hey... you okay?" Isaac rubbed his face and sighed into his hands. His response was interrupted when their boss, Mr Johnston, entered the lunch room. He greeted his employees as he began to made his coffee. He paused and studied Isaac. "You okay, Isaac? You look tired." Isaac didn't answer and instead buried his face again. Mr Johnston took a seat next to him and leaned in with a concerned look. "Everything alright at home?". Jeanette and Mr Johnston glanced at each other with a worried look. Isaac struggled with his words at first but was finally able to reply. "I had another dream about Josh again," he whispered. He resumed playing with his food. "Oh Isaac," Jeanette murmured. She patted Isaac's free hand with hers as she remembered the first time that Isaac had shared with her about his past. It came after he had a breakdown at work one day. It took both the persuasion of both Jeanette and Mr Johnston for Isaac to seek counselling. "What happened all those years ago, you were in a difficult situation and you did what you had to do," Mr Johnston consoled. Isaac noticed a tear fall down his face. "I know," he sniffled. "It's still difficult to think about." It was clear that Isaac had a lot more he wanted to say, but it would be too painful to re-live the memories. Both Jeanette and Mr Johnston knew that Isaac longed for forgiveness. Mr Johnston hummed a bit before he spoke. "Have you given any more thought about looking for him?" he asked cautiously. Isaac shook his quickly as if rejecting an absurd idea. "I wouldn't even know where to start." "It might give you closure," Jeanette said. "Isn't that what the counsellor suggested?" The trio fell into a pregnant pause as they each considered the possibility of Isaac finding his brother. "It would do your soul some good," Mr Johnston finally said as Jeanette nodded along. "Take some time off work. This is important to you." The room was silent once more until it was broken by a shaky breath taken by Isaac. "Okay," he accepted. The possibilities began to run through his mind. "I'll do it. I'll try." "I want you to apply for some leave then come by my office before you finish work today," ordered the boss. He left the staff room and the two finished their lunch in quiet. Before Isaac is due to leave work, he visited his boss as requested. "Remember, Isaac, no matter what comes out of all of this, what happened in the past was not your fault. You were just a boy and your father was an evil man. You had no choice." Mr Johnston pulled Isaac into a hug and Isaac clung to the older man. When he pulled back he wiped the wetness from his cheeks. Isaac left work that day with a heavy heart – full of hope, anxiety, and doubt. When he got home, he went straight to bed without dinner. He was quickly losing the will to live life with the colossal emotional baggage that weighed on him. He was restless all night. Isaac slowly chewed on his breakfast, deep in thought. Even though he didn't have to go into work that morning, he still woke up and went for a run as his usual time. A familiar fatigue nudge at his mind after another night of disturbed sleep. He really had no idea where to start in looking for his brother. A few generic Google searches didn't yield much particularly helpful information. Anxious conflict chewed at his insides as he reminded himself that he had promised never to return, never to look back. "But what if...," he thought to himself. What if this could bring peace to his life, or would it ruin the rest of his life? If he ever saw the same look his brother gave him when he made the choice to abandon him some eight years ago he would surely die. If only he could take the hurt away. Isaac contemplated with the idea of returning to Carrington, the town three hours away where he used to live. He struggled with the idea, but deep down he knew it was the only way to find closure. With some new found determination, he commenced his plan by packing his travelling bag. While he moved about his room gathering clothing he repeated the former address over and over in his mind. '44 Ormond Street, 44 Ormond Street, 44 Ormond Street' Over and over he repeated the address, breaking into a nervous sweat. He'd decided that he would stay a few days in Carrington if he needed to. After loading his luggage into the car, he got into the driver's seat and deflated. He let out a breath that he hadn't realised that he had been holding onto. He knew he had to commit to this and getting into his car felt like the first step. Despite his hands trembling on the wheel, he felt some stress leave his body for the first time that morning. He muttered his former address one more time before turning the engine on. He looked up at the sky through the windscreen. It was completely blue – a beautiful summer's day. The sun was high, just like Isaac's hope, but burned intensely, much like his anxiety. He turned the radio on and hoped that he could drown out his thoughts even if just for the next hour. **** He arrived in Carrington just after one PM and he was ready for some lunch. Walking down the town centre, he took in as much as he could. So much had changed in eight years. The shop fronts were all so much more modern and attractive. Where there used to be a large patch of grass right in the town centre, now was a large water fountain. Large structures of artwork decorated the public space. After he finished eating, he returned to his car and drove to the house that he grew up in. As he turned into Ormond Street, he counted the letterboxes on the one side that would lead to the house he was looking for. 36. 38. 40. 42. 44. He slowed the vehicle and parked on the street just out in front. From his seat, he examined the house at number 44 Ormond Street. What he saw wasn't the house that he grew up in. Not the house at all. Luscious plants grew from the well-kept garden on the front lawn and the sun bounced off the clean pastel-coloured paintwork on the exterior walls. Isaac recalled the mess of a house he lived in – peeling paint and mouldy walls were the ubiquitous decorations. But not here. Isaac exited the car and walked up the driveway. He spotted a `For Sale' sign lying in the grass. A smiling woman's face, he assumed the real estate agent, was printed on the sign. Isaac's heart sunk. He ran up to the front window and peered in. Empty. The house was void of any furniture. Beautiful on the outside, empty on the inside. `I've got the wrong house,' he kept thinking to himself. He walked to the rear of the house and into the backyard. In the middle of the yard was a large lemon tree. Large, golden fruits hung from the branches like bells. He walked along the backside of the house, peering into each window as he walked past. He couldn't deny it anymore – this was the house of his childhood. There was the laundry room, there was the rear bedroom. He glanced at a frosted window – there was the bathroom. All in the same arrangement as he remembered. This was the house, yet it wasn't. He couldn't help but feel so lost. He wiped a tear from his face as he made his way back to his car. He hadn't noticed the other car that had pulled up the driveway. "Can I help you?" a woman spoke. Isaac startled and turned around to find a middle-aged woman dressed in a navy suit. Her face matched the one printed on the `For Sale' sign. Isaac opened his mouth but nothing came out. "Are you interested in the house?" Isaac shook his head. "I was just having a look," he said. "I used to live here." The lady smiled at him. "Oh did you? How long ago?" Isaac swallowed. "About eight years ago." The lady smiled again. "Ah, a bit of nostalgia? Want to have a look inside?" Isaac shook his head again. "Actually, a man and his son used to live here. Would you happen to know what happened to them?" The real estate agent's smile faltered. She walked over the fallen sign and pitched it back into the ground. She faced Isaac and regarded him for a moment. "The man was evicted by his landlord years ago after Child Services took his child away." Isaac's throat closed up. His hands clamped into a fist. "What?" he heard himself whisper. "I don't know the details, but from what I heard the man was trouble. After that, the landlord sold the house to us after it had been on the market for years with a few tenants in between. Nobody would live in it for ages. It was a total mess when we first got it. We did it up and put it back on the market just a few weeks ago." She nodded at the `For Sale' sign. Isaac was completely still. He felt every muscle in his body lock up at the news of his brother having long been gone from this place. He forced himself to breathe. "Do you know where the boy is? Where do I find the Child Services?" he asked, hoping for any sort of answer. The lady gave him a sympathetic look. Her lips formed a sad smile. "I'm sorry, sweety. I don't know." Isaac looked back at his childhood house. The new pastel-coloured walls were a stark contrast from the stained and stripping white paint that he remembered. It was almost like the new paint had completely painted over all tracks of his brother. Isaac thanked the woman for her help and got back into his car. **** There's a dial tone. "Hello, Carrington Children and Fostering Services. Julie speaking." "Umm, hi. My name's Isaac. I'm looking for my brother. I've been told he's been under your services." Silence. "Okay, sir. There's a process for these sort of things. You'll need to submit an MR203 application, which you can find on our website. Make sure you fill in every details such as who you want to get in touch with and how you're related to them. Once your application is received, it will get reviewed by his keyworker. If it's accepted, your application will be forwarded to the family and it's up to them to contact you. Do you understand that?" Isaac sighed. He couldn't argue with that. "Yeah, sure." After he hung up, he visited the local library to use a computer. He filled out the required `paperwork' online and after checking it for the sixth time he submitted it. The fate of it was up to the gods now. Now all he could do was wait. He had nothing else to do in this town, but it was getting dark so he spent the night at a motel and began his journey home the next morning. Jeanette and Mr Johnston was surprised to see him back at work so soon. Isaac explained what had happened and that he was waiting to hear from the foster services. Jeanette gave him a hug and wished him luck. Four weeks had passed since he submitted his application, but it seemed like an eternity to Isaac. As each day went by he became more disappointed by the lack of response. It was in the fifth week when he got a letter. He ripped open the envelope while standing by his letterbox in the apartment block's atrium. As he read the letter, he fell back against the wall and slid down to the ground. "Your application to contact your brother, Josh Tucker, has been accepted. The contact details you supplied have been forwarded to the family involved in Josh's care. It is now up to the family to contact you directly. Please note that they may choose to reject your bid to contact them. We wish you the best in your endeavours." He folded up the letter with trembling hands and leaned his head against the wall. He took a few deep breaths. Opening up the letter he read it for a second, third, fourth time. A smile slowly crept up on his face. The realisation that he might actually be able to see his brother slowly dawned on him. He jumped off the ground and rushed to his apartment. He flopped down on the sofa and sighed happily, his heart rate slowly returning to normal. This might just work. He closed his eyes. "Oh, Josh," he whispered. Sadness began working its way into his heart again. Guilt, a feeling so familiar showed its ugly head again. He swallowed loudly. "I'm sorry." He longed for the moment where he could finally say those very words, in person, to his abandoned brother. "I'm so sorry." It was two weeks after he received the letter that he got a phone call while he was preparing dinner. "Hello?" "Hi. Is this Isaac Sommers?" It was a man's voice. Deep and smooth. "Yes, this is Isaac." "My name is Ian Tucker. I'm the foster father of Josh." Isaac put down the knife he was using and sat down at the dining table. His hands became shaky. He didn't say anything while he processed what he was hearing. "Hello?" "Hi, hello. Sorry, I'm here." Isaac's legs start trembling. "Wow. Thank you for calling me, Ian." His heart rate flies up. He's really nervous. "I must admit, Isaac, my wife and I were quite surprised to receive this letter. We never imagined that Josh's brother would want to get in contact with him." Isaac nodded even though he knew Ian couldn't see him. "He doesn't ever talk about you." Isaac exhaled. "I-I can't blame him," was all he said. "We gave him the letter. He knows you're trying to contact him." Ian pauses for a few seconds. Isaac was screaming on the inside wanting to know more. Ian's voice becomes more gentle. "I'm very sorry, Isaac. He doesn't wish to see you." Isaac's heart shattered and a sob escaped his throat. He clutched at his shirt and started hyperventilating. He starts crying. "I'm really sorry, Isaac. I really am." They spent a few moments in silence as Isaac quietly continues to fall apart. He sniffed a bit before responding. "C-Could you please pass on a message for m-me?" Isaac stuttered through his tears. "Sure thing, Isaac." "Tell him I'm sorry. Tell him I'm so sorry." He took in a ragged breath. "Every day I say it. Every day I hope that one day I will get to tell him myself. I did the worst thing anyone could've ever done and I'm punished by a guilt that haunts me every night and day." Isaac's voice strained as he struggled to express himself so emotionally without breaking apart. Silence again plagued their exchange. "Isaac, it must be really hard for you. I'm very sorry you had to go through what you did. Your father was a terrible man." Isaac held back another sob. Ian continued, "I'll tell you what. I'll pass on your message and have another talk to Josh. Maybe we can work something out." The hope in Isaac bloomed. "Really? You'll do that for me?" "I'll try. I really want this to work out for the both of you." Isaac thanked Ian for contacting him and the call ended. Isaac placed the phone down and looked at his half-prepared dinner. He had lost his appetite completely. A week later, he got another call. It was Ian. He said Josh was willing to meet him. **** Isaac spent the morning taking his time driving to Carrington. With how much he was trembling, his entire head was about to fall right off his shoulders. His stomach was in knots during the entire drive. Josh had agreed to see him. Isaac imagined every scenario that could play out, ranging from the best to the very worst. He really had no idea what would happen. The Tucker family had asked him to meet them at Willowbank park, a local park located on the other side of Carrington from where he used to live. It was early afternoon by the time he got there. He got out of the car and slow walked the perimeter of the pond. He found a park bench and took a seat, waiting for the family to arrive. He heard a car pull up behind him and he jumped up from his seat. A woman, man and teenage boy got out of the car. They spotted Isaac and their eyes didn't leave him. He walked up towards the trio as he watched the couple talk to their son as they made their way towards Isaac. As the trio got closer, Isaac was able to make out the features of the teen. The last time he saw Josh was over 8 years ago. He would be 17 years old by now – a young adult. But the teen he saw looked smaller than that. It seems like Josh had always been small his entire life. Isaac almost didn't recognise him. But when he saw those eyes he knew that boy was his brother. Such sad eyes. The teen stopped walking. He left four metres between them. Isaac watched him nervously. There was his brother. There was Josh. He decided to let Josh make the next move. Josh just stood there looking at Isaac. At first, any significant emotion failed to show on the boy's face. Suddenly, Josh was shaking in anger. He held his fists by his side, but his face clearly expressed his feelings. No words were exchanged, but Josh felt it all. Isaac opened his mouth to say something, but Josh spun on his feet and started running back to the car. "Josh!" the mother called after him. She ran after him as the father walked up to Isaac. His eyes were sympathetic. "Hello, Isaac." He held his hand out for a shake. "Thanks for coming out." "Hi, Ian." Isaac swallowed the lump in his throat and shook the man's hand. His gaze wandered over to where Josh and his mother was. They were having a deep conversation. Josh would occasionally peer over at Isaac. He says something to his mother and nod to her. They started to make their way back to the men. "I must warn you, Isaac. He holds a lot of resentment." Isaac stared at the ground and nodded. "But once he sees you're genuine and loving, he will forgive you. It's just the type of person he is." Isaac looked up to Ian's serious face. As Josh got closer, Isaac could see that he had been crying. Josh walked up to Isaac and his parents moved back to give the two some space. Isaac stared at Josh. What stood in front of him was a grown teenager. But the longer he stared, the more he could see his little brother. That nose, those eyes, those lips – they were so much like what he remembered. He just wanted to reach out and touch Josh's face. Suddenly, Josh's eyes turned from sad to angry. His lips pursed, he stuffed his hands into his pockets and looked straight at Isaac. "Why did you leave me?" he spat out. Isaac was rooted on the spot. Such a loaded question. Ian and his wife had taken a seat on the park bench a few metres away from Josh. They watched the two boys carefully. A billion words filtered through his head. So many words. He lost all ability to articulate. He just wanted to throw his arms around his brother and hug him to death. "Why?!" Josh asked again, this time more defeated. "I-," Isaac started. All the things he wanted to say were trying to come out all at once. All eight years of guilt and sorrow. He opened and closed his mouth as he struggled to speak. He became frustrated and stomped his feet, rubbing his eyes with the heel of his palms. Tears threatened to fall. "I don't know, Josh. I don't know." Tears finally fell with his first admission. "I was so scared. I didn't know what to do." He couldn't look at Josh. His eyes were glued to his shoes. "And then I did the worst thing ever. I left you with him and I'm so sorry. I'm so incredibly sorry, Josh." He was outright sobbing by that point. He rubbed his eyes some more and looked up at Josh who had the saddest look on his face. The younger boy didn't say a word. Isaac continued, "I never forgot about you. Every single day I thought about you and how I left you behind. I cried every night. I cried for you, I cried because I was a coward, and I cried because I couldn't protect you." Isaac shook his head and he remembered all the times he couldn't stop his father from assaulting Josh. "Abandoning you has shredded my entire life and every day I beg for your forgiveness." His face was back in his hands. His whole body trembled as he the emotional flood began to taper. He was so upset that it physically pained him. Josh and Isaac stood there for a long minute. Josh looked at Isaac with eyes filled with pity and sorrow. "I thought about you every day too," Josh said quietly. The share another minute of sad silence. "I'm glad you didn't forget about me," he also admitted. Before Isaac would respond the younger boy flung himself towards his brother. The two boys embraced with such a ferocious need to begin the healing process that could now begin. A relationship separated at the hands of violence and conflict, kept apart for eight years, and now re-joined beside a calm pond in a tranquil park. Both boys openly wept as they felt the contact that they had longed for. With his face buried in Isaac's shoulder, Josh blubbered out his own sorrows, "I missed you so much. I was so angry at first, but I still missed you so much." Isaac held him even tighter. As the sobbing died down, the boys continued with their embrace, too afraid to let go in case it was all a dream. "I don't want this to end," begged Josh. Isaac buried his face into Josh's neck and inhaled. Such a sweet smell. "It won't, Josh. I promise. From now on, I will be here for you. I will be everything you need." He planted a kiss on the younger boy's head. After another minute of the boy's cradling each other, Ian walked up to the boys and placed a hand on Josh's back. "How are we going on here?" Ian gently asked. The boys looked up and let go of each other. Their faces were excessively wet and eyes bloodshot. "I'm good, dad," replied Josh. They looked at Isaac who smiled for the first time. "I'm good too, thanks." Ian placed his other hand on Isaac's shoulder. "I'm sure you two would like to catch up. How about you come back to our house and have some lunch with us." Isaac searched Josh's face for any sign of objection and when he found none, he nodded his acceptance. Isaac followed the Tucker family in his car back to their house, which wasn't far from the park. "I don't think I've introduced myself," Josh's mother said as they entered the house. "My name's Helaine." He followed the family to the kitchen. "I've got some home-made pizzas in the freezer that I'll chuck into the oven." The boys ate their lunch quietly with Ian and Helaine making small talk between them. After coming down from their emotional high, the boys were drained and weary. They offered Isaac to stay in the guest room for a few days so that he could spend some time with Josh. Isaac graciously accepted after checking with Josh that it was okay. Josh had become withdrawn again. A new beginning was possible, but a lot of hard memories would have to be worked through between the two boys. Isaac spent the day calling work and organising a few more day's leave from work. He made several attempts to start a conversation with Josh who responded as appropriate, but their dialogue remained strained and would stagnate. Josh went to bed early that night. The next morning Isaac woken from a sound sleep and made his way to the kitchen to find Helaine making breakfast. "Good morning, dear. How did you sleep?" Isaac smiled at her. "Just fine, thanks. Breakfast sure smells good." Helaine began plating the bacon, mushrooms, and eggs. "It's just about done. How about you go wake up Josh. You up for that?" Isaac started feeling anxious, but decided to shrug the feeling off. He's got to start feeling comfortable with his brother if he was to mend their relationship. "Sure." "Don't bother knocking. Just walk in. He sleeps like a log so he won't hear you. He keeps his door unlocked," Helaine advised. Isaac made his way up to Josh's room and gave it a knock anyway. It seemed like the appropriate thing to do. "Josh, you awake?" he asked through the door. He was still unsure to where he stood with his little brother. After knocking a second time with no response, he turned the door knob and gingerly walked in. He found Josh deeply asleep. Isaac walked over to the curtains and pulled them apart, letting in the morning sun. He walked over to the bed and stood over Josh. Josh slept shirtless and Isaac inspected his exposed torso. Despite being a little guy, Josh still had a respectable degree of leanness and muscle definition on his body, something Isaac couldn't help but notice. His skin was so smooth, so flawless now, a huge contrast from the perpetual bruises that he wore during his childhood. Isaac was so glad that his father's violence had not permanently marked Josh physically. Isaac quietly called out to him, "Hey Josh." He paused waiting for an answer from the sleeping ball. "Josh, your mom made breakfast." Josh didn't stir. "Josh," Isaac gently called out again. He gave Josh's shoulder a nudge. Josh began to stir. "Five more minutes," he mumbled and rolled himself onto his other side. Isaac studied Josh's boyish profile before continuing with his task of awaking his brother. "Helaine told me to wake you. Breakfast is ready." Isaac didn't know what to do with himself. Josh's eyes flicked open when he realised who it was in his room. He pulled his blankets over his chest and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "Umm, hi," Josh greeted shyly. Isaac began making his way back to the door. "Sorry for waking you. Helaine told me I could come in because you wouldn't hear me knocking," he blurted out. He kept his eyes to the ground. "I'll let her know you're awake." Isaac slipped out of the room. After breakfast, Josh's parents left for work. Ian was a pharmacist in one of the local community pharmacies in town and Helaine worked part time at the local florist. They left the two boys together to spend the day. Josh invited Isaac to the park where there was a model boat race in the pond that day. On their day out, Isaac and Josh slowly but surely filled each other in on their lives. Conversation was crawling initially, but as the day went on both boys took a fair interest in how each other's lives developed without one another. Although they both suffered a harrowing beginning, their lives unfolded to become surprisingly pleasant, if not taking into account the emotional turmoil that both boys endured within each of their hearts. Isaac continued to apologised repetitively to his little brother, tearing up on more than one occasion. As Josh became more comfortable with Isaac's presence, he became more concerned about the monumental guilt and shame that his big brother held within himself. Towards the end of the day, Josh would pat Isaac's should and told him that time would heal, and would reiterate that he was glad that Isaac had come to find him. By the third day, the boys had spent a considerable amount of time with each other. The relationship between them was at an all-time high since they reunited. The boys were jovial towards each other and communication flowed more freely. Ian and Helaine noticed the positive change between the boys and encouraged them to spend as much time together as possible. Everything was looking up. **** It was Saturday morning and Isaac's fourth day at the Tucker house. He woke up early and again found Helaine cooking up a storm for breakfast. Again, she asked Isaac to wake Josh up. Opening the unlocked door, he walked straight in and towards the curtains, pulling them apart to brighten the room. He glanced over to Josh who remained asleep. Tip-toeing over to the bed, he gently sat himself down on the edge and shook Josh's shoulder. "Hey, Josh. Time to get up," he softly spoke. Josh began to rouse. He yawned and stretched, arms high above his head. Isaac spied the tuffs of hair growing on his pits. He wanted to reach out and tickle his little brother. Josh's blanket dragged down his abdomen and rested below his belly button. Isaac's eyes drifted down to Josh's nipples and he licked his lips. His little brother was a beautiful male. "What?" Josh asked as he noticed Isaac's stare. Isaac's eyes snapped away from Josh's body and up to his face. "Uhh...," Isaac shook his head and smiled tenderly at Josh. "Ah, nothing. It's just that you've grown up a lot." Joshed smiled back at him. "You've grown up to be a real good looking guy." Josh could feel the tips of his ears reddening and he couldn't get his hands to stop fidgeting. "Thanks," he replied shyly. He looked up to his big brother's face, noticing the stubble that framed Isaac's jaw. It made him look so rugged and sexy. He wanted to reach up and run his hand over his brother's cheeks. He noticed that Josh was teetering on the edge of his bed so he scooted over, allowing Isaac to shuffle over closer to him, leaning against the headboard. Isaac studied Josh's room. Certificates of achievement decorated his wall. Josh excelled in so many areas: sports, science, mathematics, music and French. Photos of Josh with his foster parents and friends were framed and displayed above his set of drawers. Josh watched Isaac scan his room. Isaac looked down at his little brother. "I'm really glad you got away from him in the end." He didn't need to state who he was referring to. "You didn't deserve that hell hole." He reached over and began stroking Josh's hand. "You didn't deserve any of it," he muttered. Josh looked up at Isaac's dejected expression and sat up beside his brother against the headboard before taking Isaac's hand in his own, lacing their fingers together. His blanket fell to his lap, exposing his naked chest. "You tried everything you could," Josh consoled. "You protected me from him as much as you could." He could tell his brother's mood was plummeting south, fast. He wrapped his arms around Isaac's torso. "You protected me," he mumbled into Isaac's shoulder. Isaac wrapped an arm around Josh's shoulder and pulled him closer. "And from now on, I always will," and planned a kiss on Josh's forehead. Josh felt the stubble rub against his skin. The two brothers sat in Josh's bed for a few more minutes. Josh pointed out all his certificates and explained the events behind each one. Isaac praised Josh constantly on his many accomplishments and talents, earning him a bigger and bigger smile from Josh each time. As Josh had scrambled around the bed pointing to each of his certificates, the blanket had dragged down further, and when Isaac looked down he saw Josh's tended boxer briefs. A very red-faced Isaac pulled himself away from his older brother and dragged his blanket back up to cover himself, apologising to his older brother. Isaac gave a laugh and pulled his brother back into him. He ran his hand through Josh's soft hair and swept it to the side. "Don't worry about it," he grinned. Before Josh could pull away again, Isaac let him go and stood up. "Breakfast has been ready for a while now. I'll see you downstairs." Isaac adjusted his cock in his pants as he walked out of Josh's room. Later that day, Ian took Josh out grocery shopping while Isaac stayed home with Helaine to help her prepare their traditional Saturday roast dinner. "It's all about the herbs," Helaine kept repeating as she moved around the kitchen. Isaac was slicing up the carrots when the phone rang. Helaine answered it. When he was about to start on the potatoes he heard Helaine gasp in the next room. "Is he okay?!" he heard her frantically ask. He set his knife down and walked into the next room. Helaine was pacing the living room and tugging at her hair. "What's wrong?" Isaac asked. Helaine looked at him, but didn't answer him. She continued speaking on the phone. "We'll be right over." She hung up and put down the phone. Walking over to Isaac, she took his hands into her own and tried to control her breathing. "Isaac, there's been an accident." She watched as Isaac's eyes went big. "Josh has been taken to hospital," she said as a few tears spilled down her face. Her voice began to tremble and she gave him a hug. Isaac was speechless. "Come on, dear. We need to get to the hospital." Helaine walked into the kitchen and turned the oven off. Isaac just stood in the living room, rooted on the spot in a fear that he hadn't felt for so long. His distant mind re-joined his body when he felt someone tugging his arm. Helaine had gathered her handbag and was leading him towards her car. When they both got in, she took his hand and gave it a squeeze. "Don't worry, honey. He's going to be alright." The drive to the hospital felt abnormally long. Josh watched the world whizz past as he stared out the window. His heart would not stop racing and his thoughts would not stop giving him every unhappy ending that could occur to Josh. They arrived at the hospital and were directed to the Emergency Department where they found Ian talking to a nurse. Ian looked relieved. When he spotted Helaine and Isaac, he pulled his wife into a hug. "Where is he? What's happened?!" Helaine asked as she sobbed. Ian consoled her and reassured her that Josh was okay. "It's just a fractured arm. A car hit him. He's a bit scratched up, but the worst part is just a fracture," he explained calmly. While Helaine was being comforted by her husband, Isaac stood close by. His heart continued racing and he couldn't force himself to believe that Josh was alright without having seen Josh in person himself. "Ca-Can we see him?" Isaac asked. Ian walked over to him and rubbed his back. "Yeah, sure. He's just in here." Ian led the two into a room down the hall. When they stepped in, Jack was sitting up watching TV. His right arm was in a cast and his face was bruised with a few superficial cuts. When he saw his family enter, he smiled and waved to them with his uninjured hand. Helaine ran over and hugged her boy, thankful to the gods that he had managed to escape with just a fracture. When she finished fussing over him, she stepped back to let Isaac talk to him. Josh looked up at Isaac to find his other brother looking despondent. Tears brimmed with tears, Isaac stared back at Josh, unable to move. His heart didn't slow. Josh held his free arm out and made grabby hands at Isaac. "I'm okay," Josh said softly. His words unlocked Isaac from his nightmares and pulled him back into reality – Josh was scratched up, but Josh was fine. He survived. Isaac let out a sob that he had been holding onto and rushed to Josh's side, throwing himself into Josh's arms. "I thought I lost you again," Isaac confessed. He wrapped his arms tightly around his little brother, holding on as if Josh was the only thing that mattered. He buried his face into Josh's neck and let out another sob. Josh rubbed Isaac's back. "I'm okay," Josh repeated. "Really." He continued to whisper reassurance into Isaac's ear. Josh was discharged later that day with strict instructions on how to take care of his arm and cast. The day had darkened and a Saturday evening roast was no longer than option for dinner. On their way home, they picked up some take-out. When dinner commenced, Helaine gave a quick word of thanks to the gods above and acknowledged their fortunes and privileges. For the entire duration of dinner, Isaac sat right by Josh and kept a hand on his knee, never wanting to let go. The next morning Isaac went to wake Josh up as he had been doing for the past week. He entered Josh's room to find him sprawled out on his stomach. His blanket had fallen to the ground, revealing his underwear-clad butt. He had a really cute butt. Isaac gently settled himself on Josh's bed and lightly ran his hand down his back. "Hey, sleepy head. Time to get up." He heard Josh groan into his pillow. "Five more minutes, big bro," he mumbled. Isaac continued to stroke Josh's back. Josh sighed at the pleasant touch. He rolled himself around onto his back and let Isaac's fingers drift to his flat stomach, continuing to stroke Josh's skin. Josh laid there with his eyes closed, a content smile on his face. "How's the cast?" Josh opened one eye to peek at Isaac. "Fine. Kind of itchy though sometimes." Isaac continued caressing Josh's belly. "You're lucky, you know. Doctor said it was only a shallow fracture. He said it should be all healed up in about three weeks, right?" His hand drifted over to stroke Josh's affected arm. Josh nodded, then pouted. "I'm crippled, Isaac! I'm not going to be able to do anything." Grinning at his little brother, Isaac slinked down towards him, wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled Josh towards him. "That's okay, Joshy. I'll look after you." He placed a kiss on his forehead. Josh snuggled into his older brother. "Just let me know if you need anything. Okay?" Josh nodded against his brother's chest, "yeah, sure." He rubbed his nose against Isaac's shirt and inhaled deeply. Isaac smelt so good to him. He reached up and rubbed his hand over Isaac's stubble. He had wanted to do that for a while now. Isaac kissed the palm of Josh's free hand. Isaac dragged himself away from Josh and began tugging at his good hand. "Come on, little bro. Time to get out of bed." Josh shuffled out of bed and walked over to his drawers to find some pants and a shirt that would be easy to slip on with only one hand. Isaac watched his little brother move, his sweet body clad only in a pair of blue boxer briefs and a green cast. Josh had bent over and was rummaging through the bottom draw for a pair of old sweat pants. Hot damn, he was a hot piece of ass. With his butt high up in the air, Isaac could just see the outline of Josh's balls between his legs. Josh managed to find a pair of grey sweat pants and tried putting them on without the help of his disabled right arm. On this third attempt to get his other leg into the leg hole, he nearly tripped over the elastic waistband, hopping on one leg to regain balance. Isaac jumped off the bed and walked towards Josh. "Okay, you're going to hurt yourself. Let me help." Isaac knelt down and held Josh's pants out for him to step into. His face was level with Josh's crotch and Isaac couldn't help but give it a good ogle. After helping Josh put his pants on, he helped Josh slip his t-shirt on. Josh giggled and pulled away when Isaac took the opportunity to pinch a nipple. The stimulation caused Josh's nipples to become erect, which showed through the shirt. Isaac gawked at his little brother's chest. "Damn," Isaac muttered. Isaac stayed by Josh's side all day and was extra attentive to his needs. "Here, let me get that for you," Isaac said as he picked up Josh's knife and fork to cut up his steak for him during dinner. Josh whined. "Isaac, I got it. I'm not a baby." Using his good hand, he snatched his cutlery out of Isaac's hands and began butchering his steak with his knife. Isaac chortled at his brother's failed attempt at independence. "Shut up," Josh shot at Isaac with a grin. When Josh was getting ready for bed that night, Isaac barged into his room. "You need help getting out of your clothes?" Before Josh could answer him, Isaac began tugging at Josh's shirt. "Come on, arms up. Watch your cast." He lifted Josh's shirt off and dumped it on the ground. He knelt down and pulled down the sweat pants. He accidentally dragged Josh's boxer briefs down a bit, exposing the top of his pubic hair. "Isaac," Josh whined. He used his free hand to yank the front of his boxer briefs up, causing the material to stretch tightly over his balls and cock. Isaac smirked. "Sorry, buddy." He stood up and patted his little brother on the butt. "Into bed now." "Yeah, yeah," Josh grumbled. He slipped into bed and made himself comfortable. He smiled at Isaac when he was settled. "You going to be okay?" Isaac asked. Josh rolled his eyes. "Honestly, Isaac. Get a grip," Josh bantered, grinning at him. He reached out with his good hand. Isaac took it in his own and was pulled down next to Josh. The younger boy huddled against his older brother and rested his head on his shoulder. "Thanks for everything," he whispered. Isaac curled an arm around his brother's back. His other hand held onto Josh's free hand, stroking it. Isaac nuzzled Josh's hair. "No problem, Josh." He remained silent for a bit before he spoke again. "I'd do anything for you." He tightened his embrace on his little brother and planted a kiss on his forehead again. He stayed like that until Josh was on the edge of sleep. Then he climbed out of the bed and tucked Josh in. "Sleep tight, baby," he whispered. About a week after Josh's accident, Isaac received a call from his boss, while he was having lunch at the dining table. "That's no problem, Mr Johnston." He paused as his boss apologised for calling him into work early. "Yeah, I can make it to work tomorrow. Don't worry about it." When he hung up, the turned to Josh who was frowning at him. "What's wrong?" Josh asked. Isaac walked over to his brother and ran a hand through the younger boy's hair then rubbed his shoulders. "Nothing's wrong." He looked up to Ian and Helaine who were also at the table. "I'm helping to oversee a merger between an overseas insurance company and our own. It's actually happening earlier than expected and there's a lot of paperwork and data entry that needs to get done. My boss wants me back so I can start working on it." Ian and Helaine nodded in understanding, but Josh was still frowning. "But Isaac," he started, before stopping himself. He fell silent and pouted, poking at his lunch with his fork. Isaac took a seat next to him. "Hey, buddy. What's wrong?" Isaac asked. Josh looked up at him, still pouting. "I don't want you to go." He turned to his parents. "Mom, dad, I don't want him to go." They looked sympathetically at Josh. "Honey, Isaac has to get back to his work – you heard him. They need him," said his mother. "I'm really sorry, baby bro. My boss really does need me back," Isaac tried to explain. Josh's pout returned into a frown. "Don't make that face." Josh's frown deepened. Isaac let out an exasperated sigh. Josh turned to his parents and looked thoughtful for a bit. "Can I stay at Isaac's for a bit?" Ian and Helaine didn't look surprised. "Please?" After a detailed discussion between the boys and the parents, Ian and Helaine made sure that Josh would look after his arm. "For now, you can stay with Isaac for two weeks," explained Ian. "And try your best not to get in the way of Isaac," he warned Josh. Josh nodded enthusiastically. When the parents tried to offer Isaac money for taking Josh in Isaac strongly refused. "It's the least I can do for both you two and Josh. You've accommodated me so well for the past few weeks. I've appreciated it so much." "It's been no trouble at all, honey. You're welcome here any time." Helaine said. Details of Josh's stay at Isaac's place were confirmed and packing for Josh started as soon as they got to his room. The next morning, Ian and Helaine were saying their goodbyes to Josh. This would be the first time that Josh would be away from them since they first adopted him. They would miss him sorely, but they understood that this was important for both Josh and Isaac. The boys took off in Isaac's car – the beginning of a beautiful bond between two brothers. **** Isaac opened the front door to his apartment and moved them inside. He placed an arm around Josh's shoulder. "Here's my place. Sorry, it's not very fancy." Josh raised his hand to play with Isaac's hand that were draped over his shoulder and smiled up at him. "Nah, it's nice. Very homey still." They spent the day out in town with Isaac showing Josh the sights of this new city. For dinner, Isaac took Josh out to an amazing steak house. They arrived home that night satiated and tired. As they got ready for bed, Isaac offered Josh his sleeping arrangement options. "If you want, we can share my king bed. If you're not comfortable with that, you take the bed and I'll take the couch. Let me know what you want. I don't mind either of those options. Whatever you want." Josh looked at the couch and shook his head. "Don't be crazy. I'm not going to make you sleep on the couch; don't mind sharing with you," Josh said as he smiled at his older brother. "Come on then," Isaac replied as he scooted the teen towards his bed. The two boys undressed down to their underwear and settled into Isaac's bed. The moon was full that night and illuminated the room with a gentle tone. They reminisced all night, bringing up whatever great stories from their eight years apart they hadn't yet covered in the last week. They talked late into the early hours of the morning. Josh was the first one to drift off with Isaac not far behind him. An unfamiliar warmth woke Isaac to find his brother snuggled up against his side. His solid fibreglass cast rubbed up against his arm. Isaac smiled at Josh resting against his shoulder. He moved his head to Josh's hair and inhaled. He smelt of a sweet, innocent boy. Isaac sighed contently at the new addition in his life. Not wanting to disturb the boy, he closed his eyes and went back to sleep. Not long after Isaac fell back asleep, Josh woke, momentarily confused with the foreign environment before realising where he was. He had wrapped himself around his older brother's arm and was still rested against Isaac's bare shoulder. He spied Isaac's bare torso and took a moment to perv at his brother's muscled chest and stomach. This entire time that he spent re-acquainting with his brother had brought about some new feelings for Josh. The resentment and betrayal that he initially felt was long gone and had been replaced with awe and a special type of attraction. Eight years ago, Isaac left his life as a young adolescent, but had returned as a man – a man who was eager to make amends. Since returning to him, Isaac had provided a warm, cherishing male love that Josh had desired for so long. He couldn't doubt the way Isaac felt about him in return too. He didn't miss the way Isaac stared at him when he undressed. He also didn't miss the subsequent thickening within Isaac's pants. Isaac's chest moved up and down slowly as he slept. Josh reached out and gingerly caressed the soft, smooth skin of his older brother's taut abdomen. Feeling the muscled body excited him and he felt his dick begin to tent his boxer briefs. Engrossed in stroking his brother's soft skin, he didn't notice when Isaac roused and silently watched his little brother explore his body. Isaac tried hard to control his breathing as not to disturb Josh's not-so-secret intimate play. When Isaac's breath hitched, Josh quickly looked up to see his brother awake and watching him. His cheeks burned red at being caught and he moved his hand away. Isaac caught Josh's hand and placed it back on his exposed body. "It's okay," Isaac whispered. He encouraged Josh to continue stroking his chest and abdomen. He placed a gentle kiss on Josh's temple, which made the younger boy snuggle up closer to the larger man. "You've got a great body," Josh whispered back. Isaac smiled and gave him another kiss on the head. Isaac felt a hard bulge bumped into his thigh and he couldn't resist pushing his leg back against his brother's bulge, which earned a soft moan from the boy. Josh tore his hand from Isaac's body and shuffled back, disturbed by his lewd reaction to his own brother. Their interaction was getting dangerously close to crossing a thin line that would change their dynamic forever. The last thing he wanted to do was ruin their relationship that they had restarted on. Noticing his brother's reaction, Isaac reached for Josh's hand again and took it into his own to reassure him. "It's okay," he repeated quietly. He needed Josh to know that he was willing to let happen whatever Josh wanted. He brought Josh's hand up to his mouth and gave it a calm kiss. Josh closed his eyes and tilted his head back. He so desperately wanted that kiss to be on his own lips. He felt the bed shift as Isaac shifted closer to him. A warm hand came into contact with his belly and slowly made its way up his bare chest. His breathing became shallow as he became frighteningly aware of the way his brother was returning the touches. He kept his eyes closed as the hand slowly drifted up his neck and gently caressed his jaw. His mouth parted slightly to let out a slight moan. He suddenly felt a warmth near his ear and opened his eyes to find his brother's face near his. The older boy placed a kiss just beneath Josh's ear, then another and another as he moved down his jaw. Meanwhile, Isaac continued to caress Josh's shoulder and neck. He made deliberate movements with his fingers, moving up behind the boy's ear and traced the delicate curve of Josh's neck. Propping his himself up with his elbow, Isaac planted more kisses along his little brother's cheek and jaw. He was painfully aware of his erect cock straining in his underwear, pressed up against Josh's side. He couldn't help but push his hips forward as he kissed the corner of his younger brother's lips, earning a sweet whimper from the boy. He removed his hand and lips away and carefully regarded Josh. When Josh realised that Isaac wasn't making a move, he opened his eyes and looked back. "You okay?" asked Isaac. Josh smiled, his eyes half-closed in a sexually-charged haze. Isaac placed a hand back on Josh's stomach and drew circles on the skin. "This okay?" he asked again. Josh just nodded. Isaac leaned in and repeated the cascade of kisses down Josh's jaw and to the corner of his lips. "How about this?" "Yeah," breathed out the younger brother. Encouraged by Josh's answers and lack of resistance, Isaac got up from his side and positioned himself on top of his brother, resting his weight on his elbow and knees. He nuzzled the side of Josh's face and planted more gentle kisses to the corners of Josh's lips. "And how about this?" Josh responded by reaching up and caressing Isaac's strong chest above him. He lifted his head and returned a kiss on Isaac's cheek, purring with satisfaction as he felt his older brother's whiskers scratch his lips. Finally, not being able to resist, Isaac joined his lips with his brother's, at the same time pushing his crotch down against Josh's. The younger boy arched his back, pressing his naked torso against his brother's as Isaac continued to rub their underwear-clad groins together. He moaned as he felt Isaac's thick meat rub up against own stiffness. When their lips separated, Isaac buried his face into Josh's neck and inhaled deeply, breathing in his scent as he humped his brother. So many sensations coursed through the younger boy. He'd never been so affectionate with another male before and it blew his mind that it was his own long, lost brother that was playing so sexually with. Isaac's whiskered cheek scraped the smooth skin of Josh's face as he continued to thrust against him. Isaac continued to grind his hot crotch against the untouched virgin sex of his little brother. Isaac's lips left Josh's and they travelled down the young man's slender chest. There he took a nipple into his mouth and roughly suckled and nibbled on it. Sexual groans radiated from the boy underneath. "God damn, baby, you make me so hot," muttered Isaac as he moved between each nipple. The surrounding skin grew red from the coarse treatment of Isaac's stubble. Josh pulled his brother back up to him and joined their lips again. Their tongues danced against each other, earning delicious whimpers from the little brother. Moaning Isaac's name, Josh squirmed as the friction against his groin quickly brought him to orgasm. Josh clawed at Isaac's back with his uninjured hand as he unloaded his warm load into his underwear, pushed up against his brother's thick cock. His first orgasm brought on by the force of his big brother rattled his soul. Feeling Josh's pulsing cock beneath him and hearing his whimpers as he orgasmed, Isaac's own climax manifested. He growled out as he pushed his crotch down one more time before soaking both Josh's underwear and his own with his copious seed. The sound of wet fabric rubbing against each other permeated the air. He kissed Josh one more time before rolling back onto his back next to his brother. The large wet spots in their underwear already began to cool. Isaac turned to look at Josh and waited a few seconds to catch his breath before speaking. "And how about that?" he asked. Josh pouted for a second, mulling over the answer in his head before speaking. He turned to Isaac and grinned. "Really glad I came back here with you," and gave his big brother another passionate kiss. ***************************************************************************** Thanks for reading this short story of mine!
