Chapter 36 The rest of the weekend went by a little too quickly but much calmer. Rick and Will came back and talked to Ry, who didn't want to discuss his love life and only gave enough information to calm the men down. He then got on them about treating him like a child, since he was going to be seventeen in about a month. He hugged them and made them promise to start treating him like an adult, which he knew they'd never honor. Secretly, his heart felt a lot better knowing that he had two fathers who loved him more than his own ever could. Billy and Justin still weren't talking as much as they used to. They went from texting or talking several times a day to maybe sending a quick text once every day or two. Billy knew it was over between them, and he was fine with that. The thing that bugged him was not knowing why Justin was being so distant. At least Ry yelled at him when they broke up. Justin, on the other hand, kept acting like everything was fine in his messages, but when they were together, Justin rarely ever said a word and hardly made eye contact. They hadn't even kissed in almost a week. Rick was still texting Brenda, but they hadn't seen each other since the night he got drunk. He was still upset that she was trying to fuck him without a condom, but he was more upset with himself for getting that intoxicated. Alcohol really wasn't his thing, and he especially didn't like getting drunk. He apologized for his behavior and wasn't all that surprised that Brenda didn't apologize for hers. She asked to meet over the weekend, but Rick made an excuse about having to watch Charlie and Joey, even though he knew his other sons could've done it. He just wasn't quite ready to go on another date with her. Charlie and Joey had the best time for obvious reasons. They agreed to be kinder to Ry and let him run his game without trying to rush the older boy out the door. When they did have alone time, however, the 4th graders were naked and touching each other. Joey had gotten better at kissing, and Charlie gave sucking dick a chance. He didn't like it but he also didn't hate it either. Like with everything else he had done so far with boys, he couldn't sort out how he really felt. He mostly sucked Joey's dick because Joey asked and didn't push him to do it. Charlie did like how it made Joey react. Joey squirmed a lot and moaned, while running his hand through Charlie's hair. It only encouraged Charlie to continue. It surprised him the first time Joey held his head still, so Joey could fuck his mouth. Joey took control and slowly pulled his small, prepubescent dick in and out of Charlie's lips. He picked up his pace, when Charlie started to use his tongue. Joey began to pant heavily and his body began to convulse. Unaware of why he did it, Joey pressed his hairless groin into Charlie's face as his dick twitched uncontrollably. Charlie continued to lick Joey's shaking penis until the naked boy begged him to stop. Neither realized that Joey had had his first dry orgasm. All Joey knew was he wanted more...when his dick was no longer sensitive, that was. For the most part, however, they just kissed and cuddled each other. As the Bartons enjoyed their holiday, Will was busy working. He kept up appearances but he was feeling annoyed with a particular client. Rollo kept calling and leaving not-so-covert messages. If he didn't need the gang-banger wanna-be, Rollo wouldn't be in any position to be making calls; however, the thug was the only means of contact with those who wielded the real power. "That's the tenth call today, Boss," Mark said, giving Will another piece of paper. Will took the slip and read it. "I'm surprised he hasn't landed in the hole," Will said, using the prison slang for the Disciplinary Segregation Wing of the prison they all once occupied. "Are you sure we can't get someone else?" "Unfortunately, we're stuck with him." "Then he can wait till Monday. I'm not at his beck-and-call." Will grabbed a file and thumbed through it. "I don't know why he's that concerned. The money has been transferred." "Maybe he's just lonely," Mark offered, pouring them both cups of coffee. "You know it goes in there around this time of year." "I won't ever forget it," Will said, remembering the stress that separation anxiety creates in the non-adjusted convicts. "I had a cellie try fighting a skinhead over the phones. It didn't go so well for either of them." Mark just nodded. "Anyway, you're right about waiting till Monday. With the banks closed, it's not like we can do much till then." "Got any plans for the weekend?" Will asked, signing a few documents before grabbing another file. "Not really. My son is either at work or with his girlfriend, and the bitch I've been seeing is seeing someone else." Will looked up at his employee and asked, "Are you planning to do something about it?" Mark shrugged and said, "I haven't decided yet. My kid is old enough to take care of himself, so if I got caught, he'd be okay. But, I'm not sure the female is worth it. Besides, it's not like she had good pussy anyway, but that's what you get when you're fucking a bag bitch, you know?" "I'll take your word for it," Will said, returning to his documents. "I usually don't slum it with 'bag bitches'." Mark laughed and finished his cup. "That's fair, I guess. Saves on a lot of STD checks." "It most certainly does," Will said. He watched Mark grab his jacket, but stopped the muscled man before he got to the door. "Not yet," Will said. "Two things: 1, here's your bonus with a little extra for your efforts." Mark took the check and his eyes got a little bigger. "And 2," Will continued, "if you do decide to do something about the girl and her new toy, make sure you hide the bodies somewhere else. We can't afford to have the scrap yard used too much." Mark nodded once more and said, "I think I've found a better way of doing it, anyway." "Really?" Will asked. "How's that?" "I'll spare you the details, but it involved a large drum and lye." Will looked perplexed, then said, "Doesn't that take a while though? Not to mention you need a lot of lye to dissolve a body." Mark shrugged and said, "True, unless you use a wood chipper first. It's a great way to get people to talk, too." Will got a disgusted look on his face, which made Mark laugh again. "I told you I'd spare you the details." "Whatever floats your boat. Have a good weekend." With that, Mark left the office, leaving Will by himself. He thumbed through a few more folders and documents waiting for the call he actually wanted to receive. Sure enough, it was a collect call from a different prison. He waited for the prerecorded prompts and accepted the charge. "Hello," he said. He waited for the annoyed voice on the other side to stop. "Well, it's nice hearing from you," Will continued unbothered by his co-conspirator's rudeness. "Is everything ready on your end?" He nearly had to pull the receiver away from his ear, as the caller exclaimed Will's "pompous tone." Again, he ignored the remarks. He was doing them the favor, after all, but given their history, he was willing to let it pass for now. "Good to know. Everything is arranged. The only hang up is that their father knows nothing about it." He rolled his eyes as the caller "mansplained" the importance of the meeting, as if Will was an idiot. "I don't need anything explained to me," his temper finally getting the better of him. "I know what I'm doing and the consequences of our actions. By this time next week, I'll have the boys in my custody and there will be nothing that Rick can do to stop me, without starting a fight he doesn't want to have. I'd ask you to trust me, but we both know it won't happen." Halfway through the newest rant, Will hung up. He finished his paperwork and went home. Everyone hated going back to their normal routines. Joey especially didn't want to go home. He asked Charlie if he thought Rick might adopted him like Ry. Charlie, who was starting to miss having someone to cuddle with, said he doubted it. Ry's situation was very different, but Joey was welcome to stay again, so long as Charlie's dad was okay with it. Joey accepted the deal, though he still wanted to live with Charlie. They secreted away one more kiss before heading to the kitchen for breakfast. Charlie saw that the table was more crowded than normal. Justin had come by to see Billy. He smiled at Charlie and tried starting up a conversation with him; however, Charlie turned his attention to the other guests. Amanda was sitting next to Ry. Apparently, whatever happened between them, they got over it, as they were laughing to themselves and seemed to be having a good time. However, it was the third figure that drew Charlie's full attention. "Hey Uncle Will," Charlie said, hugging his uncle. "Why are you here?" "I came to see you and your brothers, actually." Will said, accepting a plate of pancakes from his son. "Really? Why?" Charlie said, pouring syrup over his own stack. "Do I need an excuse to see my family?" "I guess not," Charlie said. "Billy," Will said, "When was the last time you saw your mother?" "Summer, I think," his son replied. "Dad said he's been too busy to take us again." Will saw the small eye roll and nod towards Charlie. Both father and son knew that Charlie was very sensitive when it came to not seeing their mother. "If it's alright with you and Charlie, I think I'll talk to Rick about him taking you guys this weekend." Charlie got excited instantly; however, Billy found the statement odd. He asked, "Isn't it our weekend, though?" "If it means seeing your mother, I'm willing to reschedule." Billy didn't buy it, but Charlie was all for it. Ry passively caught the exchange, and he also suspected that something was up with Will. He decided to talk to Billy about it later. School was its usual tedium. All the boys wished that the break lasted longer, even though the Winter Break was about three weeks away. Recess was held indoors, as the snow was only getting worse. David hadn't returned yet, so Charlie and Joey kept to themselves and talked about where they wanted to take their characters. They purposefully avoided talking about their private time, as neither wanted eavesdroppers listening in. Jack Trapper hadn't been a problem since Halloween, and the pair wanted to keep it that way. After school, Joey hugged Charlie before getting on his bus. Charlie was a little taken aback but returned the hug. He caught a few of the looks the other kids were giving them. He got on his bus and waited for the insults to come, but nobody said a word. Not even Jack said anything. Charlie got off the bus and was pleasantly surprised to see Will waiting for him. Charlie hugged Will and asked if Will ever left. "I ran some errands," Will said, "but I've mostly been hanging around. I need to talk to your dad and want to be here when he gets off work." "That won't be for a while yet," Charlie said. "Then I guess we can go check out the video game store...unless you're not interested," Will said. Charlie grabbed Will's hand and playfully pulled his uncle towards the car. They went to the mall and saw the place getting crowded. Will took Charlie to the game store and let the boy pick up a couple games. Then they made their way to the arcade to watch Billy work. Will pretended to be an annoying customer to get on his son's nerves, which worked perfectly. At one point, Will demanded to speak to the manager. When the younger man came over, Will went on about how helpful Billy had been and how he thought his son deserved a raise. Billy was very humiliated, and Charlie loved every second of it. Will had Charlie text Ry about the dinner plans, so the eldest Barton boy didn't start making food. They stopped and grabbed a couple pizzas and headed back to Charlie's. On the way, Will asked, "Do you miss your mom, Charlie?" "All the time," Charlie said, resisting the urge to eat the pizza. "What if I told you that you might not need your dad to see her?" Charlie looked at his uncle and saw the honesty in the older man's eyes. "Really? How?" "I've been thinking of ways for that to happen, but it does require your dad to sign some papers." Charlie instantly felt dejected. "Then it'll never happen." "O' ye of little faith," Will said. He reached over and squeezed Charlie's hand. "Have I ever let you down?" "No," Charlie said, feeling a little better. "But I can't do it without you." "What do you mean?" Will measured his words carefully and said, "You'll know what to do when the time comes." Confused, Charlie tried figuring out what Will meant, but gave up as they pulled into the driveway. Ry was at the table doing his homework when he smelled the pizza. Shortly after, Rick pulled in next to Will's car. "Hey Will," Rick said, a little suspicious. "What are you doing here?" "Having dinner with my family. I hope you don't mind." "Not at all," Rick said, kicking off his boots. "Ry, save me a few slices. I'm going to take a shower and be right back. I've got some news to share." Rick returned about fifteen minutes later, clean and dressed in sweatpants and a t-shirt. He took the plate Ry made him and sat on the couch, as the others had already finished and were in the living room. "So," Will said, "what's your news?" Rick swallowed his bite and said, "Ry's doctor called today and said the insurance agreed to cover the surgery." Will and Charlie shared perplexed looks. "I wasn't aware Ry needed anymore," Will said. "I saw the specialist a few weeks ago," Ry said. "He thinks he can make it to where my leg won't mess with me anymore." "Wow," Will said. "Is that even possible?" Rick replied, "The surgeon said that it was risky, but he seemed certain he could do it." "Thanks great," Charlie said to his brother. "So, you won't need your crutch anymore?" "If it works, I won't," Ry replied. "I'm not getting my hopes up, though. He also said there was a chance it might make things worse." "A small chance," Rick clarified, "but I get your concern." "That's fantastic news," Will said, smiling. "I also have news to report. I've been in communication with Ronda." Rick choked on his pizza. Ry slapped his dad on the back and Rick began to breathe once more. "When did this happen and why?" Rick demanded. "She reached out after your last visit wanting to know what I knew about Brenda," Will said, ignoring the incredulous look his co-parent was giving him. "I told her what I knew, which isn't a lot. Ronda wanted to know what it would take to get custody when she got out, and I told her that I couldn't answer that being a party in the custody order and not being her lawyer. We continued to talk and agreed that it might be a good idea if I start bringing the boys to see her." "Absolutely not," Rick snapped. "I don't see why," Will said. "She is Billy's and Charlie's mother and she has rights, even in prison. You even signed an agreement in the divorce and adoption settlement that required you to bring Charlie to see her, which you've been neglecting." Will paused to let his words sink in. He continued, "Honestly, I think it's for the best. If something were to happen to you, I can't adopt the boys with my conviction. Billy would be put into my custody, as I'm his next living relative, but Ry and Charlie would be put into foster care, at least until Ry turns 18 or when Ronda gets out of prison and is capable of taking care of Charlie." "But nothing is going to happen to me," Rick said adamantly. "You can't promise that, Rick. We both know that you work in a dangerous business. If an accident happened at the mill, the boys would be left without a home or each other." "And you think, somehow, Ronda is the one to rescue them?" Rick spat. "She's not my first choice, I admit, but she is the most logical. I might be able to get my brother, Kenny, to adopt them, but that's a huge if. The rest of my siblings live in other countries or won't return my calls. Hell, most have grandkids or great-grandkids. Remember that I'm the youngest. "The upside is that you won't have to go see Ronda if you don't want to. I can take the boys every other weekend, they can have their visit and I can return them the next day." "What about Ry?" Rick asked. "He would need to go," Will said. "What if I don't want to?" Ry interjected. "I don't know Ronda, and we barely talked before she was arrested." "It's important that you establish a relationship with her. You're not old enough to avoid the foster care system, but you're too old to be looked at for adoption. You'd instantly fall through the cracks. What's more, since you don't have a job or a means to support yourself, you can't be emancipated. You're stuck between many rocks and several hard places." Ry knew Will was right. He also knew he wouldn't do well in the foster system again, though he was too young to remember his times in the system. He had vague memories of his sister Beth having to go through them because of her misbehavior due to drugs and the constant sexual assaults she suffered before her death. Ry didn't want to go through any of that now or ever. "Fine," he said, "I'll give it a shot." "That's all I'm asking," Will said. "I'm not asking for you to consider Ronda your mother, but some kind of relationship might be enough to convince the judge to award custody until you turned eighteen." "I still don't know about this," Rick said. "Please Dad!" Charlie pleaded. "Please! I want to see Mom!" Right on cue, Will thought, smiling to himself. "You owe your sons an opportunity to see their mother," Will added to Charlie's begging. Unable to say no, Rick gave in. The look on his face made it clear that he wasn't happy with the arrangement, but he also thought it might give him time with Brenda. Charlie threw himself at Billy, as his elder brother came through the door. Poorly, Charlie explained the arrangement between Rick and Will, who were signing the visitation paperwork, allowing Will to bring the boys into the prison to visit their mother. Billy wasn't as excited as Charlie hoped, but Charlie let it go, since he was excited for the both of them. At bedtime, Billy knocked on Ry's door. Ry called out for the visitor to enter and was surprised to see his ex. "What's up?" Ry asked, sitting up in his bed. Billy looked around for a place to sit and moved to Ry's desk chair. "How do you feel about visiting my mom?" "It makes sense," Ry shrugged. "Your dad made several good points, and I don't want to end up in the foster care system anymore than I want to see Charlie in it." "I more meant how do you feel about going to a prison," Billy said gently. "I think the reason you haven't gone with us before is because of your brother and what happened to him." Ry was flooded with all kinds of thoughts and emotions. Billy very rarely showed concern for others, and it was even rarer when it came to him. Ry was torn between feeling thankful that Billy was looking out for him or yelling at Billy for being a manipulative prick. Ry chose the former. "Thanks, but I think I can manage. Besides, I'll have my other brothers with me, so I should be in good hands." They both looked at each other awkwardly and became silent. Billy broke the tension and said, "I do care about you, Ry, even if I don't always say it or show it. We may not be together anymore, but I don't want you to suffer anymore than you already have." Ry didn't know why he said it, but he could stop what was said next: "If you really didn't want to hurt me, then you shouldn't have cheated on me, don't you think?" Billy's anger flared and he clapped back. "For the last fucking time, I never cheated on you. I cheated on Cody WITH you, but I never once cheated ON you." "You keep telling yourself that, and maybe one day, you'll start believing it," Ry said. Not wanting to fight anymore, Billy stormed from Ry's room, slamming the door behind him. Billy slammed his own door open then closed before throwing himself face down on his bed. He cried his anger and frustration into his pillow. Billy thought they were finally moving on, and he hoped his concern would somehow melt Ry's frozen heart; however, Ry only threw Billy's mistakes in his face. Ry beat himself up for saying what he was thinking. He knew Billy was reaching out an olive branch, but Ry still hurt. He cried into the bear Charlie gave him. He wanted to go run into Billy's room, pull his ex-boyfriend into his arms and beg for forgiveness while offering to forgive Billy for cheating on him...but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Ry felt that if he forgave Billy for cheating, he would always be cheated on, and as much as he loved and adored Billy, he didn't want to be betrayed ever again. Rick checked on Billy, as Charlie did the same for Ry. Rick held Billy and let his lover cry until they fell asleep in Billy's bed. Charlie climbed up next to Ry and let Ry hold him. They didn't have their cuddle time, as neither felt like talking. When Ry stopped crying, Charlie kissed Ry on the cheek, said he loved him, and did his best to hold and comfort his brother. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 37***
