Chapter 44 Joey was practically bouncing off the walls. As much as he loved spending time with Rick, he really wanted Charlie to come home. "They're here! They're here!" Joey shouted as he saw Will's car pull into the driveway. Rick laughed and said, "Alright! Calm down!" But it was too late. Joey was running out the door, barefoot. Within a few minutes, Billy walked through the door. He and Rick stole a quick, careful kiss. "I've missed you so much," Billy said, hugging his lover. "You have no idea," Rick said, kissing his son on the cheek. "Is he always that hyper?" Ry said, making his way into the house. "Joey nearly knocked me over to get to Charlie." Rick kissed his eldest child on the cheek and hugged him. "What's this for?" "Can't a father miss his sons?" Rick said. "I wasn't complaining," Ry clarified. "I just wasn't expecting it, is all." "Daddy!" Charlie shouted as he ran into the house. Rick scooped up his little boy and held him tight. "Joey said you missed us." "He isn't lying." Rick then applied copious amounts of kisses to his baby boy's face, making Charlie giggle. "So, where's mine?" Will said, helping Joey with the rest of the bags. Charlie reached out, hugged his uncle, and kissed Will on the cheek. "There you go, Uncle Will. Thank you for taking us to see Mom." "You're very welcome," Will said, ruffling Charlie's red hair. "I hope they weren't a problem," Rick said, hugging Charlie again. "Not at all. In fact, they were very well behaved." "Look what Uncle Will got me," Charlie said, opening his coat, showing off his new shirt. "It says, 'World's Best Nephew'." "It should say, 'World's Best Son'." "Hey!" Billy blurted as if wounded. "Rude!" Ry called out from the kitchen. Charlie laughed and hugged his dad. "I love you, Charlie," Rick whispered in Charlie's ear, as he nuzzled his face against his son's. "I love you, too, Daddy," Charlie said, then kissed his father on the lips. "Can you put me down, please? I really need to pee." "You really have to pee?" Rick asked. Charlie nodded his head as if very serious. Rick gave Charlie a very serious look that made Charlie think he was going to be in trouble again. "I guess I shouldn't tickle you then, huh?" "NO!" Charlie said, trying to wiggle himself free, but it was too late. Rick tickled his youngest child, till Charlie cried with laughter and begged for his dad to stop. "STOP! I'm going to pee my pants!!" Rick set the giggling boy down and laughed as Charlie ran to the downstairs bathroom. "Do you want to be next?" Rick asked Joey, who was looking a little put out from not getting the attention he was growing used to. Joey shrugged and said, "I'm not ticklish." "Really?" Rick said, as he approached the boy with a menacing playfulness. He grabbed Joey, who started to laugh. Joey was right for the most part, as Rick found it difficult to find a spot that made the boy laugh; however, having been a very experienced father, Rick knew of several places that most didn't, and it caused a very shocked Joey to shriek with laughter. "You're in a very chipper mood," Will said, as he entered the living room. "I am," Rick stated, going for round two on Joey's foot. "I owe Joey a lot for finally opening my eyes to what kind of bitch Brenda is." "Jerk," Joey said, giggling, as Rick stopped the joyful torture. "You want another go?" Rick asked, and Joey ran from the room. "So," Will said, taking a seat across from Rick, "you're really done with her, then?" "Yeah, I am," Rick said, sitting back on the couch. "It was hard to accept her bullshit after hearing her own words when I left the room, then the unapologetic look on her face, as she heard her own words...it not only justified everything Charlie, you and the other boys said, but I was finally able to see her true colors for myself. "And now, I have so much to make up for with Charlie. I don't know where to start, but I know I have to make up for everything I put him through. I ruined a lot of the trust he had in me, and it disgusts me to look back on it. I started to come around the other night, when I took Joey to see his dad. His girlfriend was there and she was just horrible to Joey, while his dad just let it happen right in front of him." "Really?" Will asked, sounding shocked by the behavior himself. "Yeah," Rick said, shaking his head. "He only told her to leave after I called him out on the bullshit and said, I'd talk to you about getting custody of Joey. I got the impression he's scared of you for some reason." "I can't imagine why," Will said. "All I've done is take Joey to see him, and during their visits, I just sit in the corner and work on my open cases." Will shrugged and sighed. "I guess all lawyers have the reputation of being a snake in the proverbial grass." "Well, he ended up begging me not to take Joey away from him, and he's been really nice ever since." "Are you serious about adopting Joey?" "I mean, I like him. He can be a handful at times, but he is ten. I would try if I had to, like I did with Ry, but I would want to make sure that Joey and his dad had every opportunity to work things out before adoption was ever an option. Until then, I told Joey that he's welcome here whenever he wanted or needs, and that he can tell us if his dad is ever mean or abusive to him again." "That's good to hear," Will said with a smile. "I suppose I can take him to see his father tonight, so you can spend time with the boys." "There's no need," Rick said. "I took him to the hospital a few hours ago. Since Billy has to work tonight, I thought I'd see if Ry could watch Joey, so I can have a night out with Charlie." "A father-son date night of sorts," Will said. "If you want to call it that," Rick said, rolling his eyes at his co-parent. "I'm sure you also have a lot of work to take care of, as well." "I have a bit." Will looked at his watch and said, "In fact, I need to see a client, so I think I'll take my leave now." Both father's stood, and Will, uncharacteristically, gave Rick a hug. Rick returned the hug awkwardly. Will ended the embrace and said goodbye to the boys. Billy complained about having to work. He was enjoying his time off, and didn't see why he couldn't have the entire winter break off from his job, as well. "Welcome to being an adult," Rick ribbed. "But, I don't want to be an adult! I'm only sixteen!" Ry agreed to watch Joey, so Rick and Charlie could have a night to themselves. "Charlie come here, please," Rick called out to his son, who was in his room, supposedly, cleaning it. "Coming!" The boy called out. He put his dick away and kissed Joey, who got up from the bed. Charlie thundered down the stairs and walked up to his father. "Get your shoes and jacket," Rick said. "We're going out to dinner." "Okay," Charlie said. "I'll let Joey know." As Charlie turned to head upstairs, Rick grabbed Charlie's hand to stop his boy. "No, Charlie. Joey isn't going." Confused, Charlie asked, "Is he grounded?" Rick chuckled and said, "No, Little Man. It's just me and you tonight...if that's okay with you." Charlie became instantly overwhelmed. The last time he thought he was getting alone time with his dad, Brenda walked in on him naked. He wanted to be excited, but his father's track record wasn't that good as of late. "So," Charlie asked, with great reluctance, "is it just me and you...and nobody else?" Rick understood his son's hesitation. He pulled Charlie into him and tried to convey how much he loved his only biological child. "Yes. Just you and me," Rick whispered in Charlie's ear. "Nobody else, no surprises. I promise." Charlie cried in his father's arms. All he ever wanted was for his dad to love him like his brothers. He wanted this moment to happen so often, it hurt his heart, and now, it looked very much like he was about to get his wish; however, something in him said not to trust it, that his dad couldn't be trusted, and that he couldn't take another broken heart, especially with Justin no longer in his life. What made the moment real was that his dad didn't let go of him. Rick let Charlie cry and cry, refusing to let his boy go. He even shed a few tears himself, coming to terms with the depth of pain he caused the innocent child in his arms. "Are you having fun?" Rick asked, as he and Charlie left the mini-golf course. "Yeah," Charlie said, holding his dad's hand. "Good," Rick said, squeezing Charlie's cold hand. "And you're full?" "Definitely. Are we going home now?" Charlie couldn't keep the sadness from his voice. He didn't want the night to end. "Not yet," His dad said, helping him into the truck, as the ground was very slick with ice. Rick drove toward the city limits. Charlie's heart began to race, as he grew uncomfortable. He recognized the area his father was headed. Charlie breathed a sigh of relief as Rick drove past the place where Charlie and Justin had sex for the first time. Rick came to a stop at a viewpoint that overlooked the city. He kept the engine running, as it was still very cold out. "What a night, huh?" Rick asked his son. "Yeah," Charlie said, "it's been really fun." "I had fun, too. I miss hanging out with you, and I'm so, so sorry I let Brenda get in the way." "It's okay," Charlie mumbled, while looking at his feet. Rick reached over and lifted Charlie's chin. "No, it's not okay. I was being selfish, when I should've been listening to my sons, who are among the smartest people I've ever met." He cupped Charlie's face and used his thumb to wipe away a few of the tears that began to fall. Father unbuckled their seat belts and pulled his youngest boy onto his lap and held him close, as the boy wept unabashedly. "I love you so much, Charlie," Rick said. "Can you ever forgive me?" "Yeah," Charlie cried. He was so tired of crying, having done it countless times over the last year or so, but these were happy tears. He had his daddy back, and that's all he ever wanted. Charlie kissed his dad on the cheek and nuzzled into him. "Can I tell you something I've never told anyone else?" Rick asked. Charlie nodded his head. "I'm always scared of losing you and your brothers." "Really?" Charlie asked in a hushed voice. "Really," Rick affirmed. "Some days, that's all I think about. It scares me to death. I don't know what I would do without you guys, especially you. Ever since I was about your age, I wanted to be a better father than mine was to me." "What was he like?" "I don't really member a lot about him. I know he was distant. He wasn't mean, but he wasn't kind either. I guess you could say he was indifferent. After he was gone, I made a promise to never be like that if I had kids, and I really wanted to have kids. "Your mom and I tried so hard to have a baby. I loved being a dad to Billy, but at the time, it just wasn't the same, since he was someone else's son. I wanted a boy of my own, and then--one day--your mom told me she was pregnant. I tried not to be excited, because we had been down that road before, so for the next nine months, I took really good care of her. When I heard you cry for the first time, I started to cry, too, and when the nurse handed you to me, I never wanted to put you down, but then your mom demanded to hold you, and you know what she's like!" The last remark made Charlie laugh, remembering how bossy his mom was. "And then we brought you home. Billy was so excited to have a little brother. I know things between you two aren't easy, but he loves you a lot. In fact, he got to name you." "Billy named me?" Charlie said, questioningly. "Yeah, he did. He named you after his best-friend in pre-school. Knowing what I know now about Billy, I'd probably guess that Charlie Abbot was Billy's first crush." "Eww!" Charlie cried out, then giggled. "I'm named after a boy my brother was in love with!" Rick chuckled and said, "It's a lot different when you're four, so I wouldn't put a lot of stock into it." He kissed his son on the forehead and continued, "I honestly don't know what I would do if something ever happened to you. The night you were found at Ry's old place scared the hell out of me. It still does. I know everyone else believed that you had to sleep with me after you came home from the hospital, but truth be told, I needed you to sleep next to me, because I didn't want to wake up without you there." "I'm not going anywhere, Dad." Charlie said and kissed his father back before giving him another hug. "Can I ask a favor?" Rick asked. "Yeah." "Will you sleep with me tonight? I don't want to be alone." "I would really like that." "Me too, Little Man." ***Coming Soon, Chapter 45***
