Chapter 75 That night, Rick asked Charlie a couple of times if he wanted to sleep with him. As much as his dad offered, Charlie wasn't ready to sleep anywhere but with Ry. He was glad that his dad wasn't offended, though he could tell that he was still hurt by Charlie's decision; however, Rick didn't push the issue too much. Charlie still remembered the nights he sneaked into Rick's room and sucked his cock. At one time, it would've turned Charlie on, but after Justin, sex was something that scared him. "Are you still mad at me?" Charlie asked Ry, as they got into bed. "I'm disappointed," Ry said, pulling the blanket up to his bare chest, "but I'm not mad. Why did you take that prescription pad?" "I don't know," Charlie sheepishly lied. Ry suspected it wasn't the truth, but he didn't want to press things, at least not yet. "Well, at the very least, you owe Billy an apology." "Yeah, I know." "I know it doesn't seem like it, but he loves you just as much as the rest of us. Like Dad, he was worried sick about you and never stopped looking. I think he was hit the hardest with guilt, having brought Justin into your life." A single tear fell down Charlie's cheek. He didn't know why he was so full of anger, especially at his family. Yes, they were mostly horrible to him before the kidnapping, but he did acknowledge that they were at least trying to make up for it since his return. He hadn't meant to throw the plate at his half-brother. Charlie was so worked up that it slipped out of his hand and flew at Billy's head. "Good night, Charlie," Ry said, reaching for the lamp between their beds. "Ry?" "Yeah?" Charlie paused. He wanted to make sure he worded his question correctly. "Do you love me?" Ry also paused. "Yes, Charlie. I love you very much. Do you love me?" "Yes," Charlie uttered. His throat went instantly dry. "You understand that you're still way too young to be with me--you know--like that, right?" "I know." Charlie felt dejected but he understood. Ry wasn't Justin. Ry would never put Charlie in harm's way. Ry would never be with Charlie unless they both were ready...and neither would get into trouble. Ry reached over and took his baby brother by the hand. He rubbed his thumb over the back of the boy's semi-closed fist. A year prior it was chubby and soft. The hand he held now was bony and a little rough. Though Charlie was eating properly, he hadn't gained back most of the weight he had before Justin took and abused him. "Good night, Charlie," Ry said once more. "Good night, Ry." As predicted, Kelly was furious and ended Charlie's sessions with her. It took everything Rick had to stop her from reporting Charlie. Needless to say, Rick left the office with a sizable headache. Charlie was very apologetic. He even apologized to Billy, who was still rather pissed. Billy had to get a couple stitches, and as much as Trevor told him that scars were sexy, Billy was not in the mood to accept what he considered lip service. When it came to his apology to Trevor, the teen was his usual, casual self. "Don't do it again, and we're good," he told Charlie. The end of October brought on a whole new set of issues at the Barton house. With Halloween only a few days away, it was clear that things were still far from normal. Charlie had had several nervous breakdowns, worried that Justin was going to dress up and kidnap him again. Everyone did their best to assure him that Justin wouldn't dare come anywhere near Charlie again, but the nightmares and memories of the things Justin said, especially when Justin said they'd always be together, resonated heavily in his mind and anxiety. Billy offered having a horror movie marathon until Ry and Trevor pointed out that the last thing Charlie needed was to watch a bunch of scary movies centered around murders. In the end, Rick declared that Halloween was canceled for the year, and when Charlie was ready, they'd do something huge next time. Since Charlie's return, Will had been working a lot, mostly trying to track down Justin. Billy had reached out to his biological father to see if Will wanted to come over on Halloween for a "non-traumatic" Halloween party, but Will declined saying that he had a lot of work to do that night. "What kind of work do you need to do on Halloween?" Billy asked, a little annoyed. "You know I can't discuss my clients with you, Billy," Will said, almost as annoyed as his son. "I promise to make up for it at Thanksgiving." Billy paused before asking, unable to hide the desperation in his voice, "I won't see you for a month?" Will chuckled and said, "No. I'll be back in town before you know it. What I meant was that I will be there at the next holiday gathering." "Oh, okay," Billy said, relieved. "I love you, Dad." "I love you, too, Billy," Will said before hanging up. Rick took the day off and kept Charlie home, knowing kids at the school were going to be dressing up. It was a rare moment in which father and son had been alone together for an entire day. Both Ry and Billy offered to stay home, but Rick insisted that they go to school. Not a lot was said between them. Though tensions were not as high as they once were, Charlie still wasn't comfortable being without Ry. Rick ordered take out for lunch and gave the instructions that the delivery person could not come to the door in a costume that hid their face. The person on the phone seemed confused, so Rick lied and claimed their dog would lose it and might attack the driver. This seemed to alarm the restaurant, so Rick ended up asking them to leave the food outside the door, where the tip would be waiting. "That was harder than it needed to be," Rick said after hanging up. "You didn't need to ask them to do that," Charlie offered. "I don't think Justin would be listening in on all the pizza places in town." "No, I suppose not." Rick sat down next to Charlie on the couch and put an arm around his boy, which was about as physical as Charlie had allowed. "But, I'd do anything for you, Charlie." "Dad," Charlie whined, turning red with embarrassment. "What? I have the right to love my sons." "Dad! Stop!" "I will never stop loving you, Charlie." "Dad, please!" Charlie said, burying his face into his father's side to hide his smile and blushing. Rick hugged Charlie out of instinct. He quickly let go and apologized the second he realized what he had done. Charlie reached over and pulled his dad's arm back around him. The two sat like that until the lunch delivery arrived. Rick and Ry went grocery shopping, while Trevor sat with Charlie. Billy had to work for a few hours, despite his boss's attempts to make him work all night. The little kids started trick-or-treating early, and the constant doorbell rings, was working Charlie up. Trevor made a sign asking people to be honest and set out a bowl of candy, knowing "honest" was a pipe dream. Once it got dark enough, Trevor and Rick closed all the curtains and turned off as many lights as they could, without triggering Charlie. Billy came home not long after, complaining about his boss, who threatened to fire him. "I told that fat fuck weeks ago that I wanted the night off," Billy bitched. "It's not my fault he can't do his job." "Maybe he likes looking at your sweet ass," Trevor said, pulling his boyfriend into his arms. "Who wouldn't?" Billy replied. "Dad wouldn't," Charlie said, passively. Rick and Billy did their best to change the subject without making eye contact, each remembering the night before in the garage. Ry picked out several comedies to watch. He made sure to avoid anything with too much violence just in case. With the exception of the occasional ring of the doorbell, things were relatively quiet. Trevor and Billy sat on the floor; Billy with his head in Trevor's lap, while the latter stroked his boyfriend's hair. Ry and Charlie were curled up on the couch, with Charlie in Ry's arms. This left Rick feeling both blessed yet alone. He got up and went into the kitchen to get another beer when he felt his phone vibrate. Rick contemplated ignoring it, but thought it might have been work; the mill had been known to get vandalized on Halloween. He reluctantly pulled the device from his pocket and saw it was a message from Will: DON'T SAY A WORD. LEAVE THE HOUSE THROUGH THE GARAGE AND GET INTO THE CAR OUT FRONT. I'LL EXPLAIN ONCE YOU'RE IN THE CAR. Rick stared at his phone. Will was known for being dramatic, but this seemed to be a rather inappropriate time. In the end, Rick sighed and did as instructed. Luckily, the boys were too business to notice their father leaving. He went through the back door of the garage and out the side gate. Out front was a nondescript, black car, silently idling. He rolled his eyes and went to the passenger side. Rick knocked on the window and said, "Alright, Will. I'm here." A well dressed driver got out and opened the back passenger door. "I'm not getting in," he said to the driver. Will sent another message: GET IN THE CAR. DON'T ARGUE. I FOUND JUSTIN. As if reading Rick's mind, another message was sent: DON'T CALL. JUST GET IN. Rick looked back at his house before getting in the car. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 76***
