Chapter 42 Monday morning brought the standard hustle and bustle of domestic life at Kyle's house. Kyle woke to the smell of burnt toast as Rick made an attempt at cooking breakfast. Ry came to his rescue, however. Given his parents' general neglect, Ry taught himself how to cook. Within a few minutes, Ry was teaching Charlie how to scramble eggs, while he made bacon and started a new batch of toast. The only thing Rick was allowed to make was coffee, which Ry pointed out was incorrect. Kyle skipped breakfast, got dressed and left for school while everyone was still eating. He didn't want to deal with Ry asking more questions or telling him how he should feel. He had more important things to do. Cody walked into the cafeteria and saw Kyle sitting by himself. After he got his breakfast, he took a seat across from Kyle. "Hey," He said. "Hey," Kyle replied. "So, where's Ry?" "At home or maybe getting a ride from my dad. I don't really care, to be honest." "Wow, he must have really fucked up," Cody said, with raised eyebrows. "Yeah, I guess he did." "Wanna talk about it?" "Not really," Kyle replied, opening his science book. "I'm sorry I haven't been around," Cody said. "You've been busy," Kyle offered. "Not really." Cody told Kyle about being kicked off the team for being too slow. "Apparently, Coach Duncan thinks I'm a bad swimmer and there's no hope that I'll get better, even with practice." "Sorry to hear that," Kyle said. "So, why have you been avoiding me, then?" "I haven't really been avoiding you. I've been avoiding Ry. He hates me, and you've been spending all your time with him. I figured it was just easier," Cody said. Kyle could hear the shame in Cody's voice. He knew that Cody meant what he said. They'd known each other long enough to know when the other was lying or being disingenuous. However, it was too little, too late. "I think we should break up," Kyle blurted without looking up from his textbook. "I had a feeling this was going to happen," Cody said, unable to hide his disappointment. "A lot has happened, and I've decided that things need to change. I still want to be friends, but I don't think we should be boyfriends." "I get it. I'd like to be friends, too. Does that mean I have to be friends with Ry?" "Not as far as I'm concerned." "Great," Cody said cheerfully. "I really don't like him." "Yeah, I don't either right now." About 20 minutes later, Ry entered the cafeteria. Cody saw Kyle tense up. Ry looked over, saw the pair and sat at another table. Cody said, "What was that all about?" "It's nothing," Kyle said, keeping a wary eye on his roommate. "Really? Because it doesn't look like nothing," Cody said. Kyle thought about telling Cody everything, but he didn't want to open himself up like that. He made the choice to shut certain people out, and Cody was on that list. "I need a favor," Kyle said. "Okay? What is it?" "I need to see someone after school, and I know Rick won't let me. Can I tell him that I'm going to your house?" "Who are you seeing?" "My father," Kyle said. Cody looked confused. "Your father?" It dawned on Kyle that he hadn't seen Cody since he found out about Will Parker. He did the best he could to fill Cody in before Homeroom started. "So, can you cover for me?" "Yeah, I guess, but if he talks to my mom or dad, they'll give you up." "Fair enough," Kyle said. Kyle avoided Ry the entire day. He got his lunch and found a corner away from the gaming group. He sent Rick a text telling of his plan to hangout with Cody after school and claimed it was part of a homework assignment. Once school was out, Kyle waited near the bus bay to watch Ry get on. Once he was sure Ry wasn't going to be a problem, Kyle walked off campus and took the city bus downtown. He had never taken public transit before, and Kyle could see why he wasn't allowed. There were a handful of "normal" people out of a couple dozen. The rest looked like they were either on drugs or just coming off of them. There was also a strong smell of body odor, stale beer and cigarettes. Kyle stood near the driver, hoping it was safer; however, it only forced him to rub against people coming on and off. He took the first available seat near the back. Despite not knowing the bus route, Kyle had his GPS set for his destination. It took a half-hour to get to Will's business. It was a small, nondescript, store front. Kyle saw Will's car parked out front, so he walked in. "We don't have a public toilet," the receptionist said from behind the latest tabloid, the second he opened the door. "I'm not here to use the bathroom," Kyle said, closing the door behind him. "Then what are you here for, sweetie?" Pangs of loss hit Kyle like a brick. He hadn't been called "sweetie" since before his mom was arrested. "I'm here to see Will Parker," Kyle muttered. 'Really?" The receptionist said, skeptically. "You do know that Mr. Parker doesn't fix video games, right?" "I don't know," Will said, walking out of a nearby hallway. "I've been known to toy with the occasional system every now and then." He had a smile on his face. The receptionist rolled her eyes and went back to her magazine. Will looked out the front window and asked, "I didn't know our appointment was today. Is Rick parking his truck?" "No," Kyle said, "I'm on my own." "I see," Will said, a hint of apprehension in his voice. "You know you can't be here with him, right?" "No," Kyle said. He honestly didn't know it. He recovered from the news quickly and said, matching Will's grin, "But is there a problem with a son wanting to spend time with his father?" Will laughed rather loudly at the attempted manipulation. The receptionist lowered her magazine and got a proper look at Kyle. "Yes, Brenda, this is my son, Kyle." "I didn't know you had a kid," Brenda said. "I talk about him all the time," Will said, incredulously. Brenda only shrugged and went back to reading. "So, does that mean I can stay?" Kyle said. Will took a second to think and said, "Well, you're hear now, so there's no point in turning you away. Does Rick know you're here?" "Yeah. He said it was okay," Kyle said. "Alright, so I guess you wouldn't mind if I give him a call," Will said, taking out his phone. "Wait!" Kyle barked. "I didn't think so," Will said, still chuckling. "It's his job to catch liars," Brenda said, as she turned a page. "You're gonna have to do better than one next time." "True," Will said, still smiling. "But there isn't going to be a next time, is there, Kyle?" "No, Sir." Kyle resigned himself to the fact that Will could see through his bullshit. The zoo should've been evidence enough. "I guess I should go then," Kyle said, unable to hide his disappointment. "I don't see why? I couldn't in good conscience send you away without talking to Rick first." Kyle looked scared, which was Will's goal. "Unfortunately, I have some calls to make first, so you might as well stay until I can call your other dad." Kyle brightened up instantly. Will had Brenda order some food, as he gave Kyle a small tour of his business. It didn't take very long. Aside from the reception area, There were only three other rooms. One was filled with various computers. Will said that was where he and his staff worked their magic. The second room was a small, unkempt break room. They ended the tour in Will's office. It was well furnished with a wall lined with filing cabinets. Kyle made to close the door behind him, but Will insisted that it remain open. Kyle shrugged and took a seat in front of the desk, while Will sat behind it. True to his word, Will did have a couple phone calls to make, but he spaced them out, which gave him and Kyle time to talk. "What's the real reason you're here?" Will asked. "Can't a son see his dad?" Kyle regretted the statement the second he finished it. Will's pleasant facade dropped the moment Kyle called him "dad." It was replaced with one of sadness and bitterness. "I don't appreciate being manipulated like that, Kyle," Will said, with great restraint. "I'm sorry," Kyle mumbled, tears falling down his cheeks. "I didn't mean to make you hate me." "I don't hate you," Will said. "I could never hate you. I'm not upset like that. I'm upset because I've waited ten years to hear you call me 'Dad' again, and you only did it, not because you meant it, but because you wanted something in exchange. You have no idea how much that hurts." "I'm sorry," Kyle said, trying desperately to wipe his face dry. "I didn't mean to hurt you." "I know you didn't," Will said. He handed Kyle a box of tissues. "You have to promise me that you won't call that again or anything like it unless you absolutely mean it." "I promise," Kyle said. "Okay," Will said, his tone softening. "Brenda, when will dinner be here? My son looks like he could use something to eat." After father and son ate, Will asked again, "So, what is the real reason you came?" "I didn't want to be home, and I honestly wanted to be around someone I could trust." "Did something happen after I left yesterday?" "Not really. I apologized like you said, but I can't get passed Rick hitting me. Ry basically said I was overreacting and pouting about it." "Do you think you're overreacting?" Will asked. "I don't know. Maybe," Kyle said and shrugged. "I wouldn't have left you with Rick if I felt, even for a second, that he was abusing you. I didn't give him custody lightly or foolishly." Will looked Kyle in the eyes and said, "I'm going to tell you something, and it might freak you out, so I need you to understand that I only did it because of how much I love you and only want what's best for you." "What is it?" Kyle asked, unable to hide his mounting fears and suspicions. Will cleared his throat and said, "I've been in town for a lot longer than you think." "How long?" Kyle asked, with a hint of demand to his tone. "Almost four years," Will replied. Kyle was floored. His father had been in town for four years and nobody knew it. His mind flooded with questions and resentment. "I don't understand," Kyle said. "I'm sure you were under the impression that I arrived shortly after your mother was arrested; however, there's a lot more that you should know. I've been here since I got out of prison, close to four years now, and I used what resources I had to find out where you lived. I looked into Rick's background to be sure he wasn't an abuser of any kind or related to anyone who was. After that, I hired someone to look in on you occasionally. I even watched you myself every so often, when I was sure your mother wouldn't see me." "So, you were stalking us?" Kyle asked incredulously. "I guess you could see it that way," Will said. "I'm a father who was separated from his only child, a boy I had raised for the first two years of his life. While in prison, I never thought I'd see my son again, so when I got out, I had plans to get him back; however, I saw how happy he was with his mother, new brother and a dad who appeared to adore him as much as I had. "Knew there was nothing I could do that would be in your best interest, except to stay away until you wanted to find me...IF you wanted to, since I didn't know how much you actually knew about me. So, I kept my distance. I decided to prepare for the day we might meet. I saved the back child support, in case your mother ever tracked me down, and started my business here. "I needed to be sure you were safe, and the only way I could do that was to be nearby, but also staying out of the way. It wasn't until I was at the courthouse on separate business that I saw your mother, in handcuffs, being escorted into a courtroom. I looked up her charges and pulled a couple favors to get the details of her arrest. It was then that I decided to take a huge risk and expose my existence to Rick. I knew that, if I didn't make contact and get the ball rolling for him to get custody, the alternative would be so much worse." Kyle tried following Will's story the best he could. It was a lot and most of it seemed like justification to spy on him and his family, but there was an earnestness to his words, and from everything Will had done since their first visit, Kyle was sure his father didn't mean any harm by his actions. "So," Kyle said, latching on to the last sentence of Will's monologue. "You made sure that Rick got custody of me, because you were afraid I'd go into a foster home or something?" "No," Will said, with a very dark, serious tone. "I was afraid you'd be placed with your grandfather." "You spied on us because you were worried that I'd have to move to Nebraska?" Will sigh heavily. He reluctantly stood up, opened a cupboard and removed a DVD in a jewel case. He turned his laptop around, so the monitor faced Kyle. "I didn't want to show you this until after my appeal, because I didn't want to make things worse for you; however, I think it's time you learned the truth." Will put the DVD in the drive and started the attached video. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 43***
