Chapter 45 The last two weeks of school before winter break was extremely restless. Nobody wanted to be at school, including most of the teachers, and the weather only made things worse. The snow was replaced with freezing rain and chill winds, so breaks and lunch forced everyone to cram together in the halls, library and cafeteria. Principle Morris opened the gym during lunch in an effort to relieve pent up energy. Ry decided to run his game in the gym. It was noisy, but they managed to find a corner near the bleachers. Kyle was often distracted, since Cody played basketball during lunch, and he was able to see his ex-boyfriend moving about. Even though Kyle had sworn off sex, he couldn't help his attraction to Cody. "Here," Jamie said to Kyle, holding a napkin out to him. "What? Why?" Kyle said, looking confused as he was pulled from his daydream. "You've got some drool hanging on your chin," She replied, slapping him with the napkin. The boys laughed, and Kyle turned red with embarrassment. "Why did you break up anyway?" Steve asked. "It's not like there's another guy here interested in you, right Ry?" "Can we get back to killing those orcs, please?" Ry asked. Kyle noticed his ears turned a little pink. Rick was able to get caught up on work. Will offered to represent the family in court, which gave Rick plenty of alone time. Will had come by the house every night for dinner and updated Rick on the proceedings. ADA Marshall had called a few experts to handle the video evidence, and she was calling in forensic experts for the rest of the week. At dinner the Monday before the break, Will said, "I believe it's Ms. Marshall's plan to call the boys in after the winter break. Normally, things would be moving a lot faster, but given the physical evidence is so varied, I think she's trying to give the jury time to take it all in." "I wish it was over today," Kyle said. "Me too, Buddy," Rick said, squeezing Kyle's hand. "I think we can take a break from practicing your testimonies," Will said to Ry and Kyle, who looked very relieved. "However, we should go over it again, when we know when you'll be summoned. You have no idea how important the practice is. Dan's lawyer will do whatever he can to trick you into saying anything that will help Dan." "I'm sure they'll be fine," Rick said, his tone indicating that Will should change the subject. "Dad," Charlie said from the living room. "What is it, Little Man?" "There's people in Dan's yard with a sign." Rick got up and went to the dining room window. Fighting the blustering wind, a pair of men were hammering a for sale sign into the law. "I'll be damned. The fucker is selling his house," Rick said. "Really?" Will said, getting up to see for himself. "That's great news." "Yeah it is." "So Dan can't come back if he wins?" Kyle asked, a hint of desperation in his voice. "If it sells before the trial is over, I don't see how he could," Will said. "That's great!" Ry said. "I think this calls for a celebration," Will said jovially. He made a few calls and had cake and ice cream delivered. It was Kyle's favorite: Triple chocolate cake with raspberry filling, and rocky road ice cream. "You definitely take after me," Will said. "You can't go wrong with chocolate." "Excuse me," Rick said, putting a bottle of chocolate syrup on the table, "but this is definitely a case of nurture over nature." "Get a room," Charlie said, grabbing a mixing bowl from a cupboard; everyone but Rick laughed. Come Friday, the teachers gave up trying. There were small parties in each class, with games and snacks. When the boys got out of school, they were hyped up on sugar and eager to start their vacation. Rick had to tell the boys off several times for being too loud as they pulled into the driveway. "Dad!" Ry called from the back. "For the last time, Ry, I'm not going to pull your finger." "No," He said with a giggle. "It looks like someone bought Dan's house." Everyone looked. Rick pointed out that there was a pending sign, meaning that it wasn't quite sold yet. They spent the next few hours speculating who their new neighbor might be and whether not they knew about Dan's crimes. When Will came over, the conversation started up again. "They probably don't know," Will said. "The Realtor isn't obligated to tell perspective buyers, unless there was a murder." He looked at Kyle and said, "You didn't help him bury any bodies did you?" "No," Kyle said, "But I wish I had buried him." "He'll get what's coming to him in prison," Will said. "Trust me." "What was prison like?" Ry asked, timidly. "You don't have to answer that," Rick hastily offered, giving Ry a look of warning. The boy shrunk away under Rick's gaze. "Hell," Will said, frankly. "Imagine being locked in your room, with just your bed, maybe a couple books, and only being allowed out for a few hours a day. The food is worse than what you get in school--" "So, Rick's cooking," Kyle interjected. "It's not that bad...I think," Rick said. Will gave a cocked grin. "I don't know about that, but it's horrible. You're surrounded by guys who've robbed, raped and killed people, and if you're a sex offender, those same guys are looking to rob, rape and kill you. If you're lucky, like I was, you can make arrangements or get associates to make sure you're taken care of. If you're unlucky, well...you won't last very long." "I'm sorry," Kyle said. Will looked taken aback. "You have nothing to be sorry for, Kyle. You're even more of a victim in this than I am. Like I said, I was lucky. I fell in with the right people, made the right contacts, and made myself valuable to those who otherwise would have hurt me. I saw what happened to those who weren't lucky, and trust me, they'll never victimize anyone again." "Can we change the subject, please?" Rick asked. "Sorry," Will offered. "I don't mind you telling the older boys," Rick explained, "but Charlie is still too young." "No, I get it. My apologies." "What are you doing this weekend?" Kyle asked Will, hoping to lighten the mood. "I have no plans that I'm aware of, why do you ask?" "Do you want to help us set up the Christmas decorations?" Will's face brightened and said, "I suppose I could if Rick doesn't have a problem with it." "I don't care," Rick said. "You're part of the family now, so you might as well." "Thank you, Rick. That means a lot." "Oh my God! Get a room!" Charlie bellowed. "Isn't it passed your bedtime?" Rick said. "Nope," Charlie said, putting his feet in his dad's lap. "I'm on vacation." The next day, Will came early with cinnamon rolls, hot chocolate for the kids and coffee for him and Rick. "Do you have any idea what you've done?" Rick said, taking a sip of his coffee. "I do," Will said, "because I can always go home." "Bastard," Rick chuckled, as he walked away. "So we're doing pet names now?" "Uh, get a room!" The boys spent more time running around the house having tinsel wars than actually helping. Rick brought the tree home just before lunch. Normally, Rhonda dictated the decorations and micromanaged everyone till she was satisfied. Rick, on the other hand, wasn't at all particular. He let the boys decorate the tree however they wanted, while he and Will hung the lights in and around the house. Will was rather bad at decorating. "I think that goes on top of the tree," Kyle said, pointing to the star in Will's hand. "Well, I was raised Jewish, and never did anything for Christmas until I met your mother." "So, I'm Jewish?" Kyle asked. "Not technically," Will explained how it passed from mother to child. Will's mother was Jewish but his dad was agnostic. They decided to not raise their children in religion, but his mother managed to sneak in a few things. Kyle was confused but accepted what he was told. "Either way," Kyle said, "that still goes on top." "I'll keep that in mind," Will chuckled, setting the ornament back in the box. Rick came in with dinner. "Pizza," He declared. The boys grabbed the boxes and ran into the kitchen. "It also looks like Dan's house is sold, after all. They must have put up the wrong sign yesterday." "Yeah, they must have," Will said, grabbing a slice off of Kyle's plate to much protest from his son. Once it was dark enough, the boys turned off all the lights and Rick turned on the Christmas lights. Everyone was impressed with their work. Rick picked up Charlie, who once again, became upset that his mother wasn't there. Will bent down and hugged Kyle, thankful for the opportunity. He looked over and saw deep sorrow on Ry's face. He reached over and pulled Ry into his and Kyle's hug. Kyle knew they weren't normal, but he couldn't have been happier to have the family he did at that moment. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 46***
