Chapter 53 Rick was exhausted. Charlie woke up about three times screaming. His son, in a panic induced rage, demanded to talk to Ry each time, but Rick refused. He knew that it wouldn't do any good, and would only stress Ry. In the end, Rick gave Charlie an over-the-counter sleep aid, which knocked the small child out. Rick called a woman named Tamera, who was a child psychologist recommended by Paul. Unfortunately, she was out of the office till just after the first of the year, which seemed like forever, despite only being a few days off. Will left Ry the following morning after breakfast and promised to return that night. His first stop was the courthouse to talk to Ms. Marshall about his plan. She didn't much care for it, but after explaining Ry's medical conditions, she agreed to bring it up in court. Kyle mostly kept to himself. Without Ry, he decided to hold off on running any games. Cody was out of town for the holidays, visiting family in Oregon, which only left Charlie as someone to hangout with; however, the sleeping pills made his brother very grumpy. He had taken to going for long walks around the neighborhood. He often found himself in front of Ry's old house. Crime scene tape still cordoned off the area. He had once been caught looking in the windows and was run off by a patrol car. Will said that, once the police were done with the house, he was going to sell it to pay off Ry's medical expenses and try to save as much as he could for Ry's future. The Doernbeckers were not rich by any means, but Will was certain he could get enough for the hospital bills and therapies. Kyle wandered aimlessly. He was due to testify on Monday. He hadn't seen Dan since Labor Day, almost five months prior. He tried erasing all memories of his former lover. He no longer got hard thinking back to all the times they had sex, and he cringed remembering Dan ripping his pants off before Ry came to his rescue. "Kyle?" A woman's voice brought Kyle out of his thoughts. He looked up and saw the face of Ms. Dempsy, the mother of Dan's youngest victim, Billy Dempsy, who was 6-years-old now. She was very young. Kyle guessed she was about 20. "Hi, Ms. Dempsy," Kyle replied. She laughed and said, "You don't need to be so formal, Kyle. I'm only ten years older than you. Call me Debbie." "Okay, Debbie." They stood on the sidewalk looking at each other awkwardly. Then Kyle said, "How's Billy?" Debbie tried to hide her sadness behind a forced smile. "He's--he's okay." "I'm sorry he was hurt." "Thank you," Debbie said, choking up a little. "Would you like to come in? I'm sure Billy would like to see you." Kyle's pause seemed to have been taken the wrong way, and Debbie began to backtrack her invitation. "Yeah, I can do that," Kyle said. Debbie gave another weak smile and escorted Kyle into her house. "Billy!" Debbie called out. "We have a guest!" The telltale slapping of small, bare feet on wood came from the kitchen, as Billy ran into the living room. "Hi," Billy said. "Hi, Billy," Kyle said. "Is Charlie with you?" "No, he's home." "Do you want to play cars with me?" Billy asked, holding up both fists full of small, metal, toy cars. Kyle looked at Debbie, who nodded, and said, "Sure. I'd love to." Billy put a car in his mouth, took Kyle by the hand and led him back to the kitchen. They played for a few hours. Kyle knew he was Dan's last victim, he also knew that Dan was also abusing Cody around that time, but he didn't know when Billy was abused. Billy was very small for a 6-year-old. He was shorter than Charlie and very thin. His mousy blonde hair was a bit overgrown. His brown eyes were busy watching Kyle's movements. Even through Billy and Charlie were in the same class, they weren't friends, and Kyle could understand why. They were opposites in personality. Billy was shy, soft spoken and mellow. Charlie was a hurricane by comparison. Charlie was damaged, but Kyle got the impression that Billy was broken. "Can I tell you a secret?" Kyle asked. "Sure," Billy said, pushing his car into Kyle's and making crashing sounds. "My name is Billy, too." "Nah uh," Billy said, "You're Kyle." "No, really. My real name is Billy. My mom changed it a long time ago." "Why did she do that? Didn't you like your name?" Kyle considered his words and then said, "I was named after my dad, and my mom said he hurt me...like Dan hurt you and me." Billy dropped his head and said, "I don't want to talk about that." "Okay," Kyle said. "Can we still play car?" "Yeah," Billy said, though his heart didn't seem to be in it as much. "How's everything in here?" Debbie asked, poking her head around a corner. "I'm tired," Billy said, standing and dropping his cars. He walked out of the kitchen, down the hall and closed his bedroom door. "I'm sorry," Kyle said. "I think I upset him." "What did you talk about?" Kyle told her what he said to Billy and a bit more for context. "Billy is still too young to know how to process what happened. It isn't your fault." "I shouldn't have brought it up, though." "It's okay, Kyle...or are you going by Billy, too?" "No, I'm still Kyle. My real father is fine with me keeping my name. Can I ask you a question?" "Sure," Debbie said. "How old was Billy when Dan...hurt him?" "He was about two," Debbie replied. A single tear fell down her cheek. "I was that age when my grandpa abused me. My real dad walked in and saw what happened, but he was the one who went to prison for it." "Oh my God! I'm so, so sorry." "I was Billy then, too. I want you to know that your Billy is going to be okay." Debbie broke down and pulled Kyle into a long hug. Kyle left and promised he'd be back to hangout with Billy again. It was after dark when he walked into the house. His dads were at the table, going over paperwork, and Charlie was playing a video game. Kyle sat next to his brother and hugged him. "Get off! You're gonna make me crash!" Charlie snapped. "Where have you been?" Rick asked, as Kyle took a seat across from him and Will. "I went for a walk and ended up at Billy Dempsy's house." "Why were you there?" "I dunno," Kyle said with a shrug. "Dads, can I ask you a question?" "Sure," Will replied, "And you can even ask another." Rick groaned then laughed at Kyle's confusion. He tried explaining the joke, but it went over Kyle's head. "Anyway," Kyle said pointedly. "Would it be okay if I change my name back to Billy?" Both dads looked at each other with mixed emotions. Rick was the first to speak. "Are you sure?" "Yeah, I think so. I've been thinking about it for a while now. Mom was the one who named me Kyle, because of what she thought Dad had done to me. I wasn't given the choice. And now that we know the truth, I want my name back." "I'm fine with it," Rick said. He looked over at Will and asked, "What do you think, Will?" Will stared ahead. Kyle tried making eye contact, but his dad seemed to be looking right through him. Kyle waved a hand, but Will didn't stop looking. Rick noticed a sadness in Will's eyes. "Will," Rick asked softly, "are you okay?" Rick reached over and squeezed Will's hand. Will snapped out of his thoughts and shook the memories from his head. "Wha'? I'm sorry," he said, choking up a little. "I--I--I don't know what to say." "'Yes' would be cool," Kyle said, his hopeful tone faltering a bit. "Of course," Will said, with a smile. "It would be great." Kyle and Rick looked at each other, both uncertain of Will's convictions. Rick asked, "What's really going on, Will? I thought you'd be excited for this." "Me too," Kyle added. "It's just unexpected is all. I mourned the loss of my Billy for a very long time, so this brought those feelings up again." "I'm not going anywhere, Dad. I promise." Kyle walked around the table and hugged his father. "You're not going to lose me again." "I know," Will said, hugging Kyle tightly. "If you want to change your name, you have my full support." "Good, but" Kyle said. "I want to have Rick's last name, too." "Really?" Rick asked, shocked and flattered. "Yeah," his son replied. "I want to change my name to William Kyle Parker-Barton. Is that okay?" "I'm okay with it," Will said. "I'm not," Rick said. Kyle looked crestfallen. "It has to be Barton-Parker." "Jerk," Kyle said, playfully slapping his dad. "Do I have to change my name, too?" Charlie yelled from the living room. "Absolutely not!" Rick yelled his reply. "Good," Charlie yelled. "What about Ry? Is he a Barton now?" "That'll be up to him, Little Man." "I'll ask him tomorrow." "Tomorrow?" Rick asked. "Yeah, it's his birthday." Rick, Will and Kyle looked at each other with great shame. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 54***
