Chapter 54 It was very difficult to find gifts for Ry. "What do you get a boy who can't move?" In the end, Rick got him a new smartphone. Kyle picked out music and movies Ry would like, and Will paid for those. Charlie, on the other hand, got his new brother a teddy bear and some candy. "Happy Birthday!" Everyone said, as they entered Ry's hospital room. Ry was sitting up and gave a weak smile. "Hey, Kiddo," Rick said, setting down the gifts and kissing Ry on the head. "Gad to see you're finally sitting up." "Yeah," Ry said, "I go' tire' of loo'ing a' da cee'ling." "What's it like being 13?" Kyle asked. "No' a'nee diffewen' dan twe've." "Come on now," Will said, taking a seat by the window. "In five more years, you can vote and will be close to graduating." "I got you a bear!" Charlie said, putting it on Ry's lap. "T'an' you, Char'ee." "You're welcome," Charlie said. He grabbed Ry's left into his. "Dad!" Charlie cried out. "His hand moved!" "Charlie," Rick said, unable to hide his pity and disappointment. "The doctor said it was normal and nothing to get excited about." "Wha' abou' dis?" Ry asked, with a slight smirk, as he loosely closed his fist about his new, baby brother's hand. "DAD!" Charlie bellowed. Ry chuckled at his little surprise. "I 'tarded moo'ving i' las' nigh'." Everyone erupted in cheers and congratulations, so much so, the charge nurse came in to quiet them down. Only after saying she'd have the doctor come in, did they promise to keep things more civil. "That's great," Kyle said, as he took Ry's other hand, however, Ry didn't move his fingers at all. "Must only be your other hand that works," Kyle said, disappointedly. "How about we open Ry's gifts?" Will suggested, hoping to break up the tension. Ry was happy with the phone, though he wasn't sure how he was going to work it, especially the voice-activated commands. In the end, the phone was put on his lap, and Rick moved his arm to his lap, since Ry wasn't able to lift it more than an inch off the bed. "I heard it was someone's birthday, today," Dr. Bower said, cheerfully as she entered the room. "I see Ry told you his good news." "It was more like he showed us," Rick said, matching the doctor's good mood. "His a fighter, for sure." "He certainly is," She replied. "I'm very impressed with how fast he's recovering. In fact, we were able to get some more tests taken earlier and should have the results later today." "That's great," Rick said. "Any idea when or if Ry might be able to use his right arm?" "I'm sorry?" Dr. Bower asked; her confusion was quite clear. "I think what Rick means," Will quickly interjected. "Given Ry's progression, how soon do you think he'll regain full mobility?" "Oh," she replied, with a hint of skepticism. "We really won't know until we get the results. We've concluded, so far, that due to the swelling, there was pressure on Ry's spine that was causing the paralysis and nothing neurological, which is extremely positive; however, it means that Ry will still need a lot of care and physical therapy, but we are very hopeful." "When can he come home?" Charlie asked. "I can't answer that right now," Dr. Bower said. "At this moment, we're focusing on the areas we can, and the tests will tell us a lot more about the damage done and any damage that still might exist. Once we get that figured out, we'll work on the next phase of Ry's treatment." "Can he have cake and ice cream?" Dr. Bower paused for a second and said that he could have a little of both but not a lot. Charlie looked rather disappointed. After the doctor left, Rick removed a small cake they had picked up from the store, while Will went to a nearby convenience story for some ice cream, once Ry told him his favorite (chocolate). Rick talked about plans for the coming year, as he fed Ry his cake and ice cream. Ry felt self-conscious about it, while Rick was brought back to when Charlie was a baby and starting to eat solid food. Rick mentioned doing a room swap. "Since Charlie has been sleeping with me, we could move Kyle into Charlie's room, and put Ry in Kyle's room." "Why can't Ry and I share my room?" Kyle asked. He was irritated by the whole conversation, and he wasn't doing anything to hide it. "My room is bigger, and we're already in there." "Ry might need a special bed, and there isn't enough room with your bed and belongings, and I'm not going to put him in the garage." Rick said, confused by Kyle's growing tone. "It would only be temporary, until Ry is able to sleep in a normal bed, anyway. Plus, if he's in a wheelchair, you're going to need room for that, as well." "Ry and I can share my room," Charlie suggested. "Little man, your room is way too small for everything Ry needs and your stuff." "Have you thought about moving into a bigger house?" Will asked. "Yes," Rick sighed. "I have, but I can't afford it. I have to prepare for Ry's medical bills, which I'm sure are more than I can afford." "I so'ry," Ry said, around a mouthful of cake, some of which fell out of his mouth. His face turned red with frustration and embarrassment. Rick wiped Ry's face clean. "You don't ever need to apologize. This isn't your fault." Will added, "And you don't need to worry about the bills, as least not yet. Things are being taken care of to handle most if not all of them." "Called in more favors?" Rick asked, a little bitter. "No," Will said, as if he hadn't caught Rick's tone. "As his lawyer, I'm handling his financial situation." The sun started to set, as everyone gathered their things, except for Will, who told Ry that he'd be right back. Once Rick got the boys in the truck, he pulled Will to the side and asked what Will meant by Ry's financial situation. "I can't say a lot about it," Will said. "Some things were discovered during the investigation, and the police are still trying to sort out the legality of it all; however, if things turn out to be legitimate, most--if not all--of Ry's financial needs will be taken care of. At the very least, I'll sell his house, and you can use the proceeds to start paying the bills." "I totally forgot the house," Rick said. "Have you found anything on his siblings?" "Nothing yet. My investigator keeps running into dead ends, so as far as I'm concerned, he's an only child, and the entire estate is his." "Have you talked to him about any of this?" "I haven't. I want to get him through his testimony first, since that's the most pressing matter. Speaking of the trial," Will said, "we need to take tomorrow to prep Kyle." "Why?" "Because he's testifying the day after." "Fuck, I forgot. Yeah, text me later and we can arrange a time." "Fair enough," Will said. We gave the boys each a hug before leaving. "Will!" Charlie yelled. "Yes?" "I didn't ask Ry if he wants to be a Barton. Could you ask him for me?" "I'll do what I can." "Thanks!" Will entered Ry's room to see the birthday boy holding his phone with both hands on his lap. Ry looked scared at the sight of Will and tried to cover his deception. "I already figured it out, Ry," Will said, dismissively. "How?" Ry asked. "When you've been in prison for a long as I was, you learn a trick or two, but you also learn how to tell when someone is lying or not." Ry opened his mouth, but Will held up a silencing hand. "I don't need to know why you did it, but I think they do." "Ah you go'n' to te'w?" Ry asked. "No...I'm not going to tell, at least not yet, but Rick will find out. Dr. Bower almost let it slip, and she won't lie for you." "I 'now." "Are you mad at Kyle?" "No." "So, why wouldn't you hold his hand?" "'Cuz. He sai' he wuvs me." "And you don't love him back?" "No' wike da'." "I see," Will said, as he took his seat. "You're going to have to tell him. It's not fair to make him hate you, because you're too scared to admit that you don't love him." "I don' wan' to hur' 'im," Ry said. "Then you need to be honest with him. He might be hurt for a while, but it will only hurt more with every lie you tell. Trust me." "'kay." ***Coming Soon, Chapter 55***
